    I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that a wannabe artist thinks about making art but doesn't actually make any. Then there's supply collectors that buy all the bits but never use any of them so everything stays pristine. An actual artist makes art, experiments with supplies, styles and techniques from other artists, which you do, a lot. 😉 Loving the supplies and loving making little travel kits and trying different mediums and papers is just a part of the learning process. A big fun part 😄 Using those things is what makes you an artist Helen and sharing what you learn on here also makes you a teacher. Embrace it 😃
    Lovely gift idea. I did something similar for my Mum for her birthday.

      Thank you!! I think in my mind, subconsciously I've felt that an artist is someone who is putting down emotions or experiences on paper, or trying to communicate deep meaning through their art, while I'm over here thinking something like 'Oooh! It's so creamy and turquoise!!'

    • @zenlife1200

      @@helencryer I understand that. Every time an artist is interviewed it seems they are asked some questions about how they feel about their work and what they are trying to communicate with a piece. I don't think I could answer those questions about my own stuff, because I don't think of it that way. I think everyone that creates anything, puts some of themselves into what they do, mostly subconsciously. It would be impossible not to. I'm sure we all pour our hopes, fears, and grief etc into our creations, I just think most of us don't give it a second thought though, I know I don't. That doesn't mean we aren't professional or don't take our art seriously though, we just have different priorities. I guess some artists are just more attuned to their emotions and are able to harness that energy in ways I can't imagine, and I'm sure some of them love the sensation or feel of their chosen medium while they work, or have a love affair with a special type of pen and paper or color or brush. I couldn't imagine a potter not enjoying the feel of working with clay. We are too hard on ourselves these days. Enjoy your creamy turquoise and have fun. I have a thing for turquoise at the moment too, that and my DIY purple/grey shadow color I'm trying to perfect. Just don't ask me what I'm trying to say with my shadow color 😂

      @@helencryer Thank you for such a lovely comment, Helen.
      May I ask your longer-term opinion of the Mijello pure pigment set? Specifically, if they have a strong odor? I got one of their smaller, cheap sets for my daughter several yrs ago, & many tubes smelled…putrid. (Tbf, I get severe migraines, so sometimes it’s a “me” problem; that said, even *she* found the smell to be “gross.”)
      I love the idea of single-pigment paints, & use them most often over mixes, so this set has been calling me for years. idk if I got a “bad batch,” or if they have something in their makeup that results in a strong odor.
      If you have time to lmk your thoughts on that, & the overall set now that you’ve had them a bit, I’d love your thoughts. If you DON’T have time to spend replying to comments all day, that’s 💯 fine too! Thank you again, for ALL you do for us!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer 19 днів тому +1

      I haven't noticed any particular odour about them stronger than other watercolours (though I'm not particularly smelly sensitive).
      I actually really like the paints and am kind of surprised they're not more popular than they are. I find the colours smooth and clear, and probably the closest comparison would be Senneliers. The Mijellos stay quite moist in the same way, and rewet very easily, and are very pigmented and vibrant.
      I'm slightly less keen on their browns - I just have others I like more.

      @@helencryer yes, our society has taught us to put a price tag on everything to decide its worth. I mean, if it doesn’t make money, don’t do it - kinda. One has to go first some time through life, to find out that worthy can be seen from many different angles. 😊

    You are an artist! This is a fantastic gift for your dad. I did this for a work friend who was starting watercolor and who couldn't afford all good quality paints out of the gate. If you Dad likes these colors, he can buy paints as he runs out so that it's not a huge initial expense. I think including several greens was a great idea. Just a suggestion if you haven't sent this off yet, I think adding the brand (an abbreviation under the colour name) might be helpful if your dad wants to replace paints as he goes (I get not overwhelming him with pigment info).

    Again, this was such a nice video to watch, Helen! I really love your casual "YouTubing style". Your videos always convey such a relaxed and happy atmosphere. I'd love to think that your everyday life is like this all the time. And I must admit that had a good laugh when you said you don't consider yourself to be a "proper" artist, because you love your materials so much. I think that would be like Lewis Hamilton saying he's not a real racing driver because he likes cars almost as much as driving them real fast. Or Eric Clapton saying that he likes guitars just as much as playing them. Honestly, I guess a lot of artists are more or less art supply addicts. That's totally okay, it's part of the game. You're a proper artist still.

      Thank you!!! It's the atmosphere I'm lucky to enjoy a lot of the time, but definitely not all!! (For example, I spent most of Saturday in a hospital Emergency Department helping with a friend having seizures, and a good chunk of yesterday on the beach as a Coastguard responding to a potential explosives device that had washed ashore, and my teenage son came to me a few minutes ago saying he thinks he's dislocated his finger!)

    What a great gift! The only thing I would have done differently, due to my own personal preference, is give a block of cold pressed watercolor paper. However, hot pressed paper does have the benefit that it can double up for usage with watercolor pencils and coloring pencils. BTW my Derwent 0.5mm leads work perfectly and they do not break in my non-Derwent mechanical pencil. My Derwent mechanical pencil is the problem and breaks leads.

      I think he did! He's a very skilled craftsman (woodwork, metalwork, stonework, draughtsmanship etc) and can turn his hand to anything! My two brothers are architects, and my sister and one brother paint. My own kids aren't very interested in arts and crafts very much - they're much more interested in politics, economics, history, cycling and engineeringy type stuff! (None of which I like!)
