You should stick a nail through the jet holes and push up to angle the holes upwards, as far as it will go. I believe this concentrates the flames and increases the heat transfer. I do this for all of mine.
My favorite part of this video is watching how you used tape for your measurements, that's something I'll be taking with me to other projects far beyond stoves.
I've found that, since carbon felt's attribute is to absorb heat, it takes longer to warm the inner chamber alcohol to temp to where it blooms, so I don't use "wicks" in my burners or stoves (because it wastes alcohol, with the extended blooming time, making the burner or stove less fuel efficient - MUCH less efficient). I highly recommend using priming fuel around every burner or stove to increase the overall fuel efficiency that is gained from light to bloom, and the earlier bloom to runout. Coupled with a windscreen/cone and lid, my boil times are blazing fast (I have one that is sub 4 min).
Insulation doesn't absorb heat, it buffers it-or cold. It buffers temperature differences by creating pockets of air, which is very thermally conductive...
I bought a similar stove .. A 'White Box Stove'. It's made from a heavier gauge Aluminium with a Roll Seal at the top .. a little Gem. More expensive and a bit heavier .. yes. But as robust, and perhaps more, as anything out there .. can take most any pot weight and fits very nicely into my little Aluminium Kettle.
Nice stove. A lot harder to make than the Fancy Feast so there is that. And the Fancy Feast is sturdier. Be careful with yours. That and Hiram determined a 1 inch height above the jets is optimal. Also notches in the top help keep it from sealing. Just some thoughts. Well done.
Very interesting idea but unfortunately those kind of aluminium bottles are not available in my area In Canada. I made a mod to the fancyfeast alcohol stove, in place of the tomato paste can I use aluminium can from Perrier spark link water or coconut water that the same diameter as the tomato paste can. That way I bring my stove to 14g. The FancyFeast stove is by far my favorite specially in our cold Canadian winter because it ignite easier when te pâture are far below the freezing point.

Yes I saw these, and have made multiple stoves. But I also just left the bottle (and cap) alone. Push in a massively long navy mop dreadlock as a wick. Pour in alcohol. Can pull out dreadlock as a single wick, or unwind for 4-6 wicks outside hanging and down outside of the bottle. If you make some long copper metal "L" wires, put into the wick and bottle. Pull out and thread through dreadlock wicks for greater horizontal flame circumference and heat. Wobbly - no! Just dig a little hole in the dirt, and pack dirt around, and have cook pot above with grill, rocks or whatever! Metal bottle is entire stove and alcohol flask (6 ounces). Can also input citronella essential oil (for skeeter control candle). Melt wax onto outside wick - and push hot wax wick into bottle, pour in remaining volume alcohol) - wick burns both wax (as candle slow and hot) and alcohol (high heat). When done, extinguish wicks, push back inside, and put cap back on. Can use and hang inside tent - as SAFE tent warmer, emergency hand/crotch shelter warmer, .... Total fire carry.
This sounds terribly messy and dangerous. You just have mop straps dipped in both wax and alcohol flopping around outside a bottle filled with (for some stupid reason) both alcohol and wax like a molotov cocktail? I think my ultimate diy stove will have a pipe in the middle or some other way to introduce air to the mixture. Maybe a pipe with holes for ethanol vapor in it creating a chimney effect.
Given the difference the height of the cat can stove makes on efficiency, have you played around with the height of the jet holes to see if you can make it more efficient?
You don't need a bandsaw and drill press, that's definitely overkill. You can cut the bottle with a pair of scissors and make the holes with a small nail or a push pin.
@@a3a14613If cutting with scissors go slow and check for drift. You're cutting a round object and it's easy to get it unlevel. So stop frequently and correct yourself as needed.

Hi, enjoy watching your channel and I've learned a lot. I have a couple of questions about this video: (1)why did you not just cut all the pieces to fit with the bandsaw instead of cutting and then using tin snips? (2) why did you not roll the edges of the tube over the inner tube? I tried to use the roll over edge method and ended up with a mess on my hands.
Possibly finessed the cuts with snips because the bandsaw cuts leave rough edges that wouldn't seal as well? Same with cleaning up the 1/16th" drill holes. I didn't do that and didn't get good flames.

Ok im 2 years late for a comment but I'll comment anywho. I watched a youtuber use a tin can lid he cut off which he used for a base to his stove. He squirted a little alcohol on the lid and after lighting the stove which sat on the flat lid he then lit the lid. He got a tremendously fast bloom! I tried it and wow it works great.
@@AtomicBleach I wish I could but it was a bit ago. He used the newer can opener that doesn't leave a sharp edge, which I happen to have too. Maybe it's called an endless opener? I'm not sure.

Not sure what you were trying to do. But the majority of stoves will burn for 8 minutes. And yes you decreased the fuel consumed but how long it takes to boil a pint of water is the real test. And a super bat stove is a lit easier to make.
Absolutely, positively *_NOT!_* This type of burner/stove is called "alcohol stove" for a good reason. Use alcohol fuel only! The only recommended fuels are: 1) Denatured alcohol. This is often sold in hardware and big box home improvement stores in the paint department. This is a blend of ethanol and methanol alcohols. 2) HEET gas line antifreeze for your car. The yellow bottle only. This is 99.9% methanol. Either will burn with a clean, blue flame that can not be seen in strong sunlight, so be careful! (3) In a pinch, use isopropanol, between 70% and 95%. This can be found in pharmacies and big box stores, sold as rubbing alcohol. The disadvantage of using this for fuel is it will get your gear sooty. Not just a little sooty, but really black with soft, transferable soot. Gobs of it. *NEVER_* use Coleman fuel or white gas, or any other petroleum fuel like diesel, kerosene, naptha, or finger nail polish remover. Not only will these burn with black soot, but are likely to explode.

@@xenaguy01 Technically, yes. The fuel is extremely flammable and the appliances are prone to leaks and flare-ups. I have a generator to replace on my single burner. The Coleman stoves and lanterns used to be our go-to for the cabin, but there are far safer options available today.

The amount of fuel used burns up in about 6-10 mins with most of these. 45 or 55 can be achieved with finesse and technique, but either way only the fuel is being burned. You're not lighting the can itself on fire.
I just made one similar to this one but with a 12oz uptime energy drink bottle. It's very sturdy after I rolled the edge. Measures out 2"X2" and fits inside my Toaks Small Woodstove with plenty space to spare. I got a boil with 2 cups of water in 6mins and a burn time of 11.5mins. Really wish I'd kept some of the metal bottles I got in the US to make one of these, not seen metal bottles in my own country.

To have 1 ounce of alcohol burning for 14 minutes is VERY FUEL EFFICIENT

The main point is that is not only unsuitable for use in an alcohol stove, it is _extremely dangerous_ to do so.
