Typhoon Mawar (Betty) stalling east of the Batanes - May 30, 2023

The long-running saga of Typhoon Mawar continues as it struggles and stalls to the east of the Philippine Batanes islands. However, the storm is rather large and is likely delivering tropical storm conditions to the islands in the Luzon Strait, and potentially to the southeastern coast of Taiwan. Storm conditions will spread northwards throughout the next couple of days, reaching Ishigaki and Miyakojima overnight, and onto southern Okinawa tomorrow night.
Along with strong winds, heavy rain will be an issue to several locations, including residual storms over the Philippines which could inundate the island of Mindoro. Rainfall of over 100mm is expected across most of the Ryukyu Islands, and flooding rains will become possible in southern Japan regardless of whether the storm makes it there as a tropical entity, or a post-tropical cyclone.
Mawar is gradually weakening, and this trend is set to continue. Typhoon conditions are still possible in the southern Ryukyu islands, but the storm is expected to weaken to below typhoon strength by the time it reaches Okinawa.
