Ghost town …I remember in the 80s, we would go out there on a Friday night and listen to bands and trawl the different trendy bars and go for a great curry afterwards ! What happened ?
I lost my bearings several times but was happy to see the Nat West bank building still standing, The Gamble institute where I did my foundation degree & the Prudential buildings where my dentist was.( Have they moved Queen Vic then? ) Cotham street & a number of the original buildings like Boots clock. I used to live on Green bank, Liverpool Street just in front of Bold Street so I remember the Pheonix Pub on the way to th'Hotties! Thank you for the memories.
@@cteasdale1979 I have a cousin who still lives on Scholes Lane. As a baby, I lived on Blackbrook Road. At the end of the shops there were 2 stone cottages, later demolished. Then we lived with Pop in Liverpool Street until we got a coal board house in Cement City in Parr. I lived there until I did my degree & moved altogether. I haven't been back for over 10 years. The last time for a funeral. It seems that a lot of character has been lost with the many changes. Especially along Liverpool Road & Westfield Street. Shame.
I was Born in St Helens and thankfully no longer live there.......everything is shut down.......no atmosphere.......looks like a forgotten decaying Town like many!!!
I used to go for my nights out in the 80s ,,live bands , great bars …everything ! And look at it now ! They knocked down the iconic buildings (Helena house and the fleece hotel..which were art decor ) And paved it over and turned it into this depressing shit !
They started pulling the decaying terraced houses down in the1960's onwards on a large scale. They moved whole (tight-knit) communities one after another and scattered them everywhere, which led to all sorts of social problems. Pits started to close; Pilkington's began to get rid of workers in favour of machines, Beecham's sold out to the yanks and closed, leading to mass unemployment and declining town centre. The town imploded and this is the result.
My old family town my dad's old Pilkington factory he worked at till may 1969 then Emigrated to Australia. All changed main shopping strip with all the new brick paving of street's only some old landmarks I recognise from odd trips back to the UK.
Somebody didn't get much research done did they? The Rugby League Stadium is the real beating heart of a very moribund town and you didn't get to it. Also the World of Glass museum. A bit mmmmm! if I'm honest pal.
It's just a walk on that day.No planning I am not a tour guide. No two walks will ever be the same.Thera are many edited and scripted views on St Helen's that will give you what you want.My walks are spur of the moment and just how I like them.Check out my next walk in St Helen's when it happens and dont forget to sub..Somebody wants too much dont they. Namaste
Woolybacks is a term used by scousers to refer a lot of places that exist around the outskirts of the city. Widnes, Warrington, Runcorn, etc... So, St Helens isn't home of the woolybacks. No-one refers to themselves as a wool. Jesus.

I used to go to St. Helens college many years ago. Would not recognise the place now. Such a shame to see how it looks now.

Well, that's really weird that you do. But it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, I suppose. Have a good weekend, cocker!
@@rumourhats the Scousers are the ones who carried the wool on their backs so always find it baffling that they call other people woolybacks.
