Kingston Upon Hull is usually abbreviated to just Hull and is a port city in East Yorkshire, close to the Humber Bridge, Bridlington, Goole and Grimsby.
We take a walk from the Premier Inn hotel building near The Deep along through Hull Old Town, down Scale Lane and Silver Street. We then continue our Hull tour down Friargate and Whitefriargate until we reach the Beverley Gate and Princes Quay.
From here we head across to Queen Victoria Square and the new Hull Maritime Museum and then down Jameson Street until we reach Hull Railway Station.
In 2017 Hull was given the prestigious 'City Of Culture' award by the department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
I really enjoyed filming this one. I feel Hull has so much to offer but didn't really have enough time to spend there to discover it so I will definitely be back!
Hull is a popular University city and you will often hear how great life is here as a student, So if you're looking to come to the Uni here in Hull take a watch and check out the city centre streets, shops, bars and restaurants as well as the culture, the museums and the marina.

I was born and lived in Hull for 26 years until I left to go to the US in 2016. I haven't been back and I didn't think I missed it until I watched this. I miss walking around old town hearing your feet hit the cobbles. I miss getting chippy, I miss sitting in the pub with the lads and having a few after work beers. I miss the sound of seagulls, buskers in the streets, indoor market during a busy weekend. Hearing the bells coming from Hull Minster. The audio alone made me emotional.. I never thought I missed home this much.
You left UK for better life in USA?
There has been a murder u know??

Hello
Can you tell me about this city
The wonderfull city of Hull and its people has been my adoptive city for 50 plus years. Thanks for the video
The architecture is just amazing, even though i'm from England myself (Manchester specifically) i'd be such a tourist in awe of some of these buildings, I really like the statues too!
I love Hull, I was born there, my grandparents and great grandparents ran a jewellery business. So much character, amazing history, but most of all the people are wonderful. Strong, generous, honest,
Hello
Please tell me about the city hull more
I am going in this city for study
I grew up in Hull from 1951 to about 1968, enormous changes have happened to its commercial hub so great I am astounded. Beautiful architecture, wide safe streets, fountains and best of all clean air!
I lived here some 20 odd years ago. Loved it then and it seems to be nicer today. Greetings from Iceland
@@erniemix1835 Hull is amazing! 🤩
Hull fair ..chip spice .. and pattie and chips .. I love Hull xxx
My girlfriend lives there. I live in California USA. She has came out here 3 times to see me. I’m planning on going there next year.
My 11th Great Grandfather, William Cheney, was born in this area, in 1538. His son John, came to the USA in 1635. Once this Pandemic gets over, I will be visiting my ancestral home. I noticed the telephone booths were White. I always thought British phone booths were painted Red. Excellent video and much appreciated.
They are in the rest of the UK Charlie. Only Hull's are white. Get yourself here Charlie. Full of friendly people and a good night out
They’re actually cream. Tge telephone company was owned by the city council until recently. Our phone boxes are cream reflectiing that independence.
Great city. Grew up there.
Hull is a great city i have lived here all my life the people are the friendliest in the country we have such a rich history some parts of Hull are rough but it is what it is
Well said
Very true, I'm moving up there from London within 2 months. Just brought a brand new flat there. The people are awesome.😊
It's a crab bucket. There's nothing great about a city where a large demographic of it's educated youth leave. That's a sign of a town in decline
Born and bred in Hull, rather live here then most other places, love it personally. And we are friendly 😊
Born and raised in Hull. Left in 2005 to backpack the world, went to some far out places, and still, Hull is one of the most backwater places in the world.
Outside of my friends and family, can't say I've ever missed it or felt nostalgic for the place.
Iconically, I've met people from Hull in some very interesting places- The Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles been one example.
How did you find LA?
Did you like it there?
@GimbalWalkTV I found it a bizarre mix of the haves and haven'ts.
Interesting for a movie buff like myself, but outside of the wealth and parties, it's a bit shallow. Hollywood was interesting until nightfall, and everyone there seemed to be trying to "make it".
If you are from Sutton isn't that just outside of Hull ?
Kingston Upon Hull, is unique because of its location. Bordered on the south by the wide estuary of the Mighty Humber it was cut off from North Lincolnshire until the Humber Bride opened and to the east the North Sea is not too far away. The nearest towns, cities like York are just as close to other larger urban areas like Leeds and Bradford and so on. So there isn't much reason to come to Hull.
That isolation has caused it to have a unique culture and at times it can be quite insular.
It was a major port and fishing port although the latter is no longer so.
But on the other hand aesthetically it is pleasant in many places, totally flat (there are virtually no hills), there is a dip around Sutton Road and hills in its satellite towns like Hessle.
I guess it is a bit enigmatic, there is a lot of social deprivation.
But it also has a lot going for it, an excellent University and the countryside is about a fifteen minutes drive no matter which part you are in Hull. It's also close to the sea and has lovely villages like Hedon, Cottingham, Willerby, Ellerker, Swanland and so on.
I had no idea hull was such an attractive city with such beutifull buildings
I am so proud of this city and its friendly people, such a lot of old history about the place. A very unique city, i was never apart of HULL, HULL became a part of me. God bless the city. 🙏❤🙏🇬🇧 March twenty twenty two
And so you should be Paul Crisp. I'm from Hull too and and think our city often gets such a bad reputation which is really unfair, when we have so much going for our city such as at least three shopping centres 🏬🛍️ (Princess Quay, St. Stephen's and Prospect Centre), the world's only submarimun (The Deep), the Hull marina⛴️🚢🛳️, a lot of coffee ☕ shops and a thriving fishing 🎣 industry.
@@tomspence8506 always better to have a positive frame of mind however hard. 👍😎👍 April twenty two
@@paulcrisp9861 I agree. I think I forgot to mention the may museums in Hull a well such as Hull Maritime Museum (which used to be called Town Docks Museum), the street life museum and Wilberforce House 🏠 were William Wilberforce lived.
Came to work in Hull as a hairdresser in 1981 thankyou hull for giving me a job in your city and my lovely clients so v v clean city but not the buz it had back in the 80s90s but fab buildings and hull kept me in work big thankyou live in Spain nowx
I lived just outside Hull in the 70's and 80's and have many fond memories of the city, I love to go back, the view of the Humber Bridge as you approach on the A63 is breath taking, similarly the expanse of water at high tide as you travel along Clive Sullivan Way is amazing, I love to visit the museums in the old town, the old Pier Head and the shops on Hessle Road, once the heart of the fishing community. Your walk along Whitefriargate is a dissapointment with the loss of Woolworths, Littlewoods, M&S etc. but no different to other large towns and cities, they need our support and they will surely bounce back, the city has such a lot to offer. Thank you for your video and please do another, there is so much more to explore
Good to see that Fanthorpes is still in the arcade after all these years. I used to visit in the 70s as a teenager, drooling over the "high tech" music systems.
I didn't know what to expect to be honest but what you've shown us of Hull looks pleasant. Nice architecture and I just want to say thanks 👍 to those guys in the boat ⛵ picking up the litter. ❤️
Well said!
Spent 3 years of my life in Hull 50 years ago. It has gone through awful and extensive changes, but so many of those beautifully designed older buildings remain and I sincerely hope will remain!
Find the filming so calming and peaceful 😊
Take a wander with someone who knows Hull City Centre. You saw only a fraction of the character of Hull. There are so many magnificent buildings you missed. Land of Green Ginger, Parliament St. more explanation of what you were looking at. Eg. It was not just a pile of bricks on Monument Bridge, it was the old walls of the city.
Otherwise, it was interesting
I got very lost on this one!
Going to go back and do a more in-depth one
queens gardens, specially in the summer with the fountain going , st stephens shopping, we did see the tidal barrier, but most wont know what it is, etc

Hi Amanda. I have received offer letter from the University of Hull for studying Msc in Marketing. I’d be relying on part time work to sustain myself. Would that be possible in Hull? A great little film. Enjoyed revisiting ......... a lot is happening construction wise! I noted on the film. Keep promoting Hull, a summer view of the city would be great!

What was your experience of hull as a black man?
@@AnaAna-xx4md It was an amazing experience .The people were very friendly . It was really fun. Cost of living is very low. I would have loved to settle permanently in Hull, but job opportunities are low in Hull.
I’ve never understood why people put Hull down so much, it has some amazing architecture. This is evident in the first 6 or 7 minutes of the video. A lot of the city centre was destroyed in World War 2, Hull was the most bombed city in Britain after London - and you can see later in the video, when going along the streets after visiting Queen Victoria Square, that most of what you see is post war. Had you gone up Bond Street, where the K2 Tower is - which is the tallest building in the city centre - you’d see huge bomb damage from the war. West of there and south of the grand terrace of old buildings on the north side of Albion Street is an enormous car park, the size of four or five football pitches, and that is an huge bomb site. Although it wasn’t just the German airforce that wrecked some of Hull, the post war replanners did a lot of damage too - Castle Street, south of Princes Quay and north of the marina, where the A63 is, used to have many old buildings. Large numbers were demolished to build that road between there and Myton Bridge. It’s nice that so much of old Hull does remain though.
Well said
Some great info there
You’ve 100% inspired me to go back and film there again
I’m pleased you found my comment inspiring. I mentioned the K2 Tower, the tallest building in the city centre - there is a cafe on the top floor and you can go out on the roof. You can see for many miles in every direction, you have amazing views along the river Humber in both directions aswell. When walking around the city if you seek out John Street, Kingston Square and Albion Street you can see very nice architecture. Regarding Albion Street: the nice architecture can be seen on the north side of the street, the south side is a huge car park as all those buildings were destroyed in the war. Also if you go south of the marina there is Corporation Pier, the ferries went from there over to Lincolnshire but ceased in the early-1980’s when the Humber bridge opened. If you stand on the pier you have nice views of the Humber and you can see the enormous bridge several miles west of you. This was the longest single-span bridge in the world when it opened, it took 9 years to build.
Because it lacks opportunity. It's not progressive, it's regressive.
Happiest are those who are most ignorant.
Of my circle of friends, I'd say 90% of us that went to Mallet in the 90s left on the 2000s for London, Leeds and a life abroad.
None have returned.
@@JamesofSuttonYorks It is certain that bigger cities, and some international destinations, would seem more appealing to locals to relocate to. I've never lived in Hull but I have friends that do and I've been there many times, on the times I've stayed I've gone exploring and found the place fascinating. It was one of the biggest fishing ports in the world, many docks are still in use although some are derelict - and it's not fish anymore but other things. There was once an incredible building in Queen Victoria Square, the Prudential, if you stood in front of City Hall it was to your right - where Barclays bank now is. It was a grand, impressive building, from the photos I've seen and it had a huge tower at one end - this would have been visible from the other side of the Humber in Lincolnshire. Sadly a parachute mine hit the building during the war, much of the structure was destroyed but the tower was still standing - the following day they demolished the tower as it was feared it could fall down without the main building next to it propping it up. Go to Google and enter "Hull Prudential building World War 2" and you'll see what I mean. If still there if would be one of the most famous buildings in the north of England I'm sure. Another great thing about Hull are the incredible sunsets on the Humber, they are breathtaking: if you go to Corporation Pier at dusk, you'll see the amazing orange sky descend for many miles going west - you'll see many other people there watching too, many with cameras. In terms of architecture, I would recommend visiting Parliament Street, Albion Street and Prince Street to see old classic buildings, and much of the Old Town too.
I miss my home, glad I'm coming back soon 🔥

Only been to The Deep (which was great). I was curious about Hull, brilliant vlog, thank you.
You’re welcome 😊
before this trip I'd only been to the Deep too!
i lived in hull form 2014- 2016, i used to stroll in these streets alone many times, listening to Songs of innocence by U2 which released around that time.
When ever i hear the album again now, i miss the cigarettes, the fish and chips, the dark ale, even the cheap strongbow cider, the dull dingy, wet weather and weirdly friendly people of that city, and not to mention the mistresses I hung out with secretly.
Hull's a great city. Just needs more investment, which historically has been difficult to come by due to it being a non-transient end of the line city. Recession and subsequently Covid has impacted the city centre that bit harder with shop closures and the like. People slag it off unjustly in my opinion. The old town and the new walkway that connects the city centre to the Marina is fantastic.
Crap
Thanks for yet again another different video keep on walking 👍
Thanks, will do!!
I think I've been to Hull only once? I remember seeing so many corner buildings in the town. I love corner buildings. Probably odd, but not too many here in the states. Nice to hear the different languages whilst on our walk. Thanks again! :)

Much appreciated, Neil. With the help of Serendipity, I met my Darling Mary at the gates at Pearson Park (junction of Princes Avenue and Westbourne Avenue, Hull), Autumn 1971. Fifty years later, with loving Children and Grand-Children = 💚
Stay free. Rab 🍻 😎 🌠
Being born in Hull in 1952 it was a thriving city with many large companies, but like most cities in Britain all gone , replaced by fast food outfits, Pound shops, and general tat shops. Gone are the places like Cowleys shoe shop ( still got some shoes I bought at Cowleys after they moved into the corner shop), where you got service, Carmicheals, Hammonds. Then you had all the decent tailors here you could have a suit made to measure in a thousand different patterns all in wool. The Docks have nigh on closed for cargo ships. I met and talked to Princess Anne at the Guildhall ( I was 16) when she came with her brother and parents to open QE Dock/ KG Extension.
Left Hull in 1983 and it is sad when I come back ech year to see the state of it, a dump now. Then you have the Stans with immigrants just hanging about on street corners. Jameson Street was a very busy street at one time, but there is nothing there that interest me now.
Whitefriagate on a Satururday was wall to wall people, you had to elbow your way down there to the likes of Marks and Spencers, BHS, Littlewoods, Woolworths, Blacks camping (tents, not the present types) shop. Its like the Mary Celeste now in comparison.
One new building that they made a good job of was the Crown Court , top of Lowgate.
When are they going to,finish the Maritime Museum in the old Town Dock offices, it was started before Covid and its till not finished or opened. I am sure the old building didn't take as long to build without all the modern aids.I just hope thy don't ruin it like thy did Wilberforce house with their job lot of grey paint and plywood that must have fallen of the back of a lorry. The museum was ok before they started on it, they don't need a cafe in there thats just wasted space, you are tripping over them as soon as you walk out, you don't need a gift shop with all the Chinese knick knacks. Most people going round it won't hve a clue what they are looking at as all ships are foreign and British men go to sea now. Being a port there was quite a few young men made it a career to go to sea or started their carreer by going to sea who lived in Hull and surrounding area.
Once the money with all the large companies either left Hull or were bought out and closed down then the city went down th sewer. There used to be flower beds all over the town centre, down the centre of all the main roads into Hull, it was quite a picture of bright colours, not now, just concrete an brick and ugly.
When I heard it was going to be the City of Culture, I fell off my chair, not even agriculture.
So some local councillor patted himself on the back for doing the deal with Siemens to make the windfarm blades, that isn't infinite, and why wasn't a British or even a Hull company designing and manufacturing the the whole lot, why some German company? Once the Dogger Bank wind farm is finished , Seimens will upsticks and your left with empty buildings an employees that are basicly labourers with nothing to do. Judging by the standard of schools in Hull these days since the Comprehensive system came in then there will be few if any Engineers and Scientists coming from Hull.
But thats endemic of Britain these days with poor political leadership by any of the parties.
It was good of you to video Hull, but I was surprised how many buildings were painted black or gray. Following the war a lot of the fine buildings had taken on the sooty colour and I see they have made a bit of an effort to waterblast the soot away but not totaly, but why paint new shop fronts black and grey, it just drags the place down.
I wish one day
i will go there
i wish🥺❤️

Thank you for taking the time to visit a part of Hull. It looked like you would be doing it in sections. As for visiting Hull, I think not if the comments are a reflection of the people. The little fountain ⛲ with many water spouts reminded me of one in Brisbane. Children loved playing in it on hot days, while parents watched.
You need to speak about what you’re walking past. The history of Hull!!
I don’t speak on my channel 👍❤️
April 1943, I was born in the front bedroom of 26 East Grove: I now live in Leipzig, Germany. All the family worked on the fish dock. In 1946/7 we moved to the prefabs in Froghall Lane - no longer there. I remember, six or seven years old, standing opposite the Royal Station Hotel to see Prince Phillip. Dick Bentley (Take it From Here) came to open the New Hammonds department store and going for toasted tea cakes at Troxler and Stanley's. Then the opening of the new Cecil cinema. 1955 we moved to Beverley. It was a different world.
Wow amazing memories John!

You should have visited Queens Gardens...there is a stall there next to the fountain ponds which serves Fried Goldfish...freshly caught from the ponds and served with deep fried Licorice Allsorts.
There is also a hoopla stall where you can throw rubber rings at empty milk bottles...if you succeed in ringing one, you win a night out in Witherunsea with the traffic wardens grandmother.

At 6:16, the third building in (the white one with the little plaque) is England smallest window.
Stunning! Greetings from New Zealand.
Love Hull but was hoping you might walk along the river front.
Have done that - will be putting it up soon
Hi David. I have received offer letter from the University of Hull for studying Msc in Marketing. I’d be relying on part time work to sustain myself. Would that be possible in Hull? If not, can I travel to York or Leeds from Hull easily? How much time does the journey take? Your reply will help me decide which university to accept for my masters. Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks.
When you look at this footage so clean nnnnnn the deep the buildings etc please don't let it get like other boarded up city's or the town Doncaster etc so sad
Never been there !
Wounder if there's much traffic there ?
