- We have a few things going on in this video. From dealing with a new bottle calf to doctering a sick cow. I give a detailed explanation how to use and load a Cap-Chur cattle dart gun to deliver medication at a distance.
For anyone interested in looking into a Cap-Chur dart gun here is the company’s website.

I bought mine off the Valley Vet Website

Good morning
Again thank you for the opportunity to see just how
Much work goes into ranching.
Be safe and God bless
Thank you! I try and show the realities of farming and ranching.
I don't if you have a reg. job but it looks to me like you have more than a full time job ranching!! God Bless!! Jesus is coming very soon!!🙌🙌
I very much enjoy seeing how you do things. And honestly I am absurdly pleased that the cow who hurt her foot not only survived, but had a calf! I was expecting that story to end very differently while you were telling it.
I’m very happy that she made it also!
There's truly some genius into how that cap sure works. It appears to be safer for everyone. Hopefully your cow feels better quickly.
There is some smart engineering in it for sure! Unfortunately the cow didn’t make it. She had developed a disease called Brisket Disease also known as high-elevation disease. It’s pretty much heart failure caused by high altitude. I’ll make a follow up video with more info. If you Google brisket disease in cattle you can find alot of information on it. I’d never seen it before so it was new to me.
Winters still got a good hold there. Great idea the dart gun saves a load of unneeded stress and saves time.........Win Win!
Winter is still going strong here! It was 0 degrees Fahrenheit this morning so -17.7 C. We usually start to get a taste of warmer weather in March though so we are looking forward to that. I feel like the dart gun has been a great investment.
Thanks for the demo on the dart gun. I can definitely see why you invested in it.
I think it’s been a great investment so far
Hello, ….the last two videos were excellent, I really enjoyed them…Thank you…from a wet Washington state..
Thanks for the comment! Try to stay dry over there!
Great video as always and an informative piece as well. That dart gun is a super nice tool to have in the box, otherwise and I'm sure not telling you anything you don't know you’d have to rile everybody up to get her corralled and after a few of those episodes they catch on real quick and it becomes harder to catch anything let alone the one you need. It's very different from Dairy farming where you handle them at least twice a day everyday even then if you try to do something with them at a different time of day they start giving ya the side eye and if things don't go right it turns into a nightmare. I've noticed your cows are at ease around you and it's excellent herdsmanship to know that cow needed help, that antibiotic will be long gone by turn out. It's good practice with antibiotics to be frugal and less is better but I always kept a healthy herd and it did at times include the use of antibiotics as needed. Great video take care and stay safe
The dart gun just made it so much easier and less stressful on everyone. I think it’s a great tool to have. I feel like I have a pretty mellow herd of cows and I think a lot of that is because I walk out through them so much. It’s funny if I walk out there with my wife or someone else and there is 2 people instead of just me they act totally different and are on edge and jumpy. Unfortunately the cow didn’t make it. She had developed a disease called Brisket Disease also known as high-elevation disease. It’s pretty much heart failure caused by high altitude. I’ll make a follow up video with more info. We need your subscription to increase a ton you are doing a great job explaining animal husbandry and a huge part of our population nows nothing about it any more. Increase in add revenue wouldn't hurt either
I’d love more subscribers! The channel has grown slowly but steadily. I just keep trying to put out quality videos and hope that’s enough to keep it growing.
Feeling like I might need one of those too!
I think one would come in very handy for you. Especially where you have different groups of animals spread over different locations. Not always easy to get them back to a working coral and chute.
Great video Bryan
Thanks 👍
Good video Bryan! Never used a Cap-Chur dart gun before but it definitely is useful and protect cow and rancher both. We have stories with cow's and chute issues too. Good explanation on the CCGD operation. Hope all do well and you have no losses. Great video, until next week!
Thanks Bob! I’ve been very happy with the dart gun. It was a sad deal with the chute accident she was a good young cow too of course. If she keeps healing I’ll try and keep her around and just keep her on the river in the summer. Unfortunately the cow didn’t make it. She had developed a disease called Brisket Disease also known as high-elevation disease. It’s pretty much heart failure caused by high altitude. I’ll make a follow up video with more info. Appreciate the video. I bought a cap sur gun as well. Haven’t had to use it yet, but great to see how it works. 👍
I’m sure you will love it. I’ve been really happy with mine. Great tool to have!
Good luck calving Bryan
Thanks!
Hope the meds get to work and make her feels better. Nice way to get medication into them. Have a great week.

Sorry to hear that. Was that a recently purchased cow. Wondering why she would get something like that if you had her for some time.@@LuthiRanchWY
I think I had purchased her in the last few years. I think giving birth is what probably triggered it though.
Afternoon Bryan.
Sure looks cold. I saw y’all were -7° one morning last week when I thought to look. We’ve gotten cool this weekend with low in the 30s and high about 50 but spring has sprung. Lots of trees starting to bloom and bermudagrass is even coming out of dormancy. It’s early but so is Easter.
South Texas has been hot for a long time.
Sorry about the bottle calf but such is life.
It’s been pretty chilly and stormy the last week or so. It was -5 yesterday in the morning -2 the day before and around 0 today. I’ve accepted the bottle calf haha I’m out there so much now anyway with calving she isn’t too big of a hassle. Have you been affected by all these fires I keep hearing about?
@@LuthiRanchWY That’s too cold for me! Fires were 100 miles north of us and so many homes and livestock lost. Sadly two people died in the fires. Family of family lost their home completely.
That area had a really good summer last year and had a lot of grass that just fueled the fire and the 50-60 mph winds in rolling country with ravines and breaks made it impossible to fight for first couple of days. Thanks for checking on us. Have a good week.
I will say that dart gun was a great purchase
I think so too!
Thanks Bryan, that was an interesting video 👍🏻
You are welcome. Glad it was informative!
Great vid on the dart gun!! Very educational and a diff gun than I have seen others use on Cross Timbers Bison youtube.
I’ll have to check out what kind of gun they have.
New to your channel, thanks for taking us along. May I suggest that you put a little Vaseline on the needle to keep the medicine from leaking out.
That’s a great idea! Hope you enjoy our channels!
Nice job 👍
U do what is best for you and your farm I say ..👍
No one likes it they can...uno...
Haha thanks!
Hey how’s the elk this year, no hay damage this year, , great video
Thanks! Still no elk. I need to make a follow up video about the elk this winter.
👍💪
👍
Super late like number 27. I've been busy lol.
Haha still with that first wave though! Hope you are getting all your work done
@@LuthiRanchWY what did u give the cow ? I missed it ?
LA 200
@@LuthiRanchWY that's what I was thinking
@@LuthiRanchWY did it help any or can't you tell yet?
That's pretty cool of you to take the time to make videos.
Seems like thats a poor design on that chute.
It isn’t the best cattle chute. I’d like to upgrade it one of these days. It just takes money haha.
Looks like the dart gun could really be handy do you know the diameter? Kids have paintball guns and i have .50 and .45 muzzle loader i could modify. Looks like that is what the cap chur gun is but maybe not. Next problem is they made it so you can not even buy antibiotics anymore so you almost need to use a real gun when 1 gets sick or pay the vet to come out and that cost 1/3 as much as the cow did.
I’ll try and get a measurement for you if I can remember. The dart gun has been super handy so far. It’s hard to make the decision to bring in the vet sometimes because like you said it can be pretty expensive and no guarantee it will pay off and the animal will survive.
@@LuthiRanchWY I was able to look at the old pnu-dart the vet has it is a marlin 22 with tube on the top that says .50 dart but I was not able to measure so they should be 1/2" if you could confirm I would appreciate it
Also noted the vet had green ramset blanks and at 50ish feet he had to turn the variable power down to 3 the first shot was on 5 or so and the dart hit 2 hard and bounced off discharging the drug in the air not sure how to make variable power yet but with pressure losses through the rifling and the options of green yellow and red cartridges I think I'll start with a 1/32" gas port in my adapter and test with various wads 1st 1 being foam earplugs or perhaps just the primer standard 209 white hot and 209magnum if 1 figures it out any inline .50 may work
Hope u donot get sick n decided u are not go to the dr cauz your boss watched this video n u could be in trouble 😂😂😂😂
Haha what are sick days
