      Yo Jesse,
      love this upload. Keep it up.
      Yes, money is everything nowadays it seems but without people it can only get one half way there to happiness.
      to anyone reading this.
      Love is the only solution to the problems of our wretched lives. Not $.
      $ only makes things complicated and hollow if life is only built around it.

    I originally planned to come to Japan for 2 years...That was 30 years ago. Moving to Japan from Canada was the best decision I've ever made

    • @dip9995
      @dip9995 10 місяців тому

      Can you expand on that?

    • @gordonbgraham
      @gordonbgraham 10 місяців тому

      @@dip9995 Sure. In Canada, home ownership is out of reach for the working class. We recently bought a home (2020) on a 1/4 acre lot 50 minutes from central Tokyo for the equivalent of $150,000. The same home would have cost me at least 10 times that in my native Toronto Canada. We've raised 5 kids here. Canada's healthcare system used to be the envy of the world. Not anymore. In Canada you have to wait up to a year for an MRI. I've had 3 operations in Japan. Each of which took less than a week for an MRI and each of which took less than 2 weeks from diagnosis to complete. Japan's National Health Insurance covers 80% of all medical costs including medicine and dental (including braces). It costs me ¥30,000 ($250) a month for a family of 7. Japan annually ranks in the top 5 in international testing in math, science and literacy among high school students. All of my kids have gone through or are in the public school system here, where they emphasise responsibility, both individual and communal. In elementary school kids walk to school unaccompanied by parents. They meet at a designated spot, each year's student has a different coloured cap. The eldest (grade 6 student/students) carry a flag, for crossing intersections etc. He/She is responsible for the safety of the grades below them. The next in line is the grade 5 student, etc. Each student/students are responsible for the students behind them. This promotes responsibility not only for oneself but for others. Students clean the common areas at school, including washrooms, hallways, etc. Which is why you rarely see a dirty public toilet in Japan. Respect for the fact that someone has to clean that area has been instilled in them. Used cars are in mint condition and cheap. There's a "shaken" system here in which cars must be certified once every three years to meet road safety standards. Japanese tend to buy new cars during this period. However, most Japanese take proper care of their cars doing the maintenance and upkeep on them, so you can buy used cars really cheaply. I'm from Toronto, where the salt roads in winter eat cars. Then there's the culture, nature etc. In spring, I surf in the morning and snowboard in the afternoon. I have a motorcycle. Riding my bike along the coastline is brilliant. There is next to no street crime here. I don't have to worry about my kids getting into drugs in school as there is next to no drugs in the schools. In my single days, I was enamoured by how friendly and sweet Japanese women are. As a happily married man with 5 kids, I couldn't be happier with how dedicated and caring my wife is as a wife and mother. Anyway, I could go on and on and on...but I think that's enough to give you an idea. Cheers!

    Great video Jesse! It was nice to hear so many of the things and perspectives about life here in Japan that frustrate me but ultimately make me happy being here! The seniority work culture, overwork and the low pay are definitely downers. Mexican taco truck guy had a great energy and message. Being free to do what you want and surrounding yourself with friends and people you care about whether they’re animals or humans is very important! Surprised no one talked about the happiness of curiosity and exploring Japan (or any city) 😊 ❤

    For me, the happiest moments of my life took place in Japan too. Ever since I was suddenly told I had to go back to my country because of covid19 and leave Japan, I´ve been in despair. After almost 4 years it´s gotten better though, and finally I think I can go back thanks to a university exchange. There is still the slight chance of something going wrong and preventing me to go back, but I will always have hope. All those lost and failed chances to go back to Japan during these years won´t feel worthless and a waste of time anymore once I get to go back. I need to feel the cool breeze and warm sun, see the bright blue sky and tall mountains, talk with sweet and funny folks and savour that unique food once again. These are all things that you can experience in other countries, but for me, they only feel special when I´m in Japan. I only really feel alive when I´m there.
    There is a part of me that is scared though. Scared that my love will eventually fade away, that I will end up regretting dedicating all of my life to Japan. I am scared because of what people tell me, what I read online, my own thoughts and anxiety. But even still, I will always be hopeful. Hopeful that this path I have chosen for myself is worthwhile and will grant me the true happiness I have lacked so for most of my life. Maybe there is someone out there who feels as passionate as me and can understand me. Others will call it an obsession, a blind perception of a lifestyle which I don´t seem to have grasped well. But they don´t know I am completely aware of the dark side of this country. I know it, and despise it almost as much as I love the bright side. When someone comes to this realisation that not everything is black or white, but grey, there will always be two different kinds of people: those who decide to turn away because they can´t deal with the ugly part, and those who, despite everything, will continue to love, continue to hope, continue to work hard for change .
    I sometimes think people forget this is a possibility. It has always been one, and it´s the same for humans, not only for traditions, for a specific culture or country. I believe Japan has this ability. It may take longer than other countries may, to achieve its best potential. But my goal is to always be there supporting and helping this country to change. I believe that, too, will grant me true happiness.

    • @fairy3469
      @fairy3469 Рік тому +3

      I have similar feelings as you, thoug I have never been to japan, i like it very much and want to move there one day, but everyone around tells me not to cause of its dark sides. It put me down for a little while, then i thought that there are are sides to every country its just no one talks about them openly, even where i currently live and more developed countries like europe or usa have their own very dark sides too. you have to keep an open mind and find out what works for you. yes, there are many not so good things about japan but there are reasons for that and every country is trying their best to improve so its not good to completely invalid a country just cause it has negatives. Japan is beautiful and that is a fact. I wholeheartedly like japan even when i know it has lots of flaws and wish to go there somewhere .

    Personally on the money question: I think it's like a limit, like if you have little to no money it's going to be very hard to be happy; however, on the other hand too much money can reduce the meaning of things. So, I think that having enough money to not live paycheck to paycheck and be able to afford things you like is (not necessarily but definitely contributing to) buying happiness.

    Money in my opinion is a sensitive subject to talk about since everyone's point of view is different in how they want money to portray in their life. Realisticly speaking, money is essential in our life because it pays bills such as rent, utilities, food, and leisure. In my opinion, the guy who said you can't buy friends is such a great point. But, to me, money is a necessity and essential for living. It will provide me comfort and peace of mind, which makes it part of my happiness. Because if I can't pay my bills I'm screwed 😅

    I have seen my mom & dad struggle to even buy a fucking dinner. I never got a chance to take any creative classes, even though I'm so into it, just because I knew it since I was young that my parents couldn't afford it. Money has always been something so important yet unachievable to us. And yknow It's really a whack feeling when someone from your family is sick and all you have to think about is how to manage money to pay bills.
    And sure, we do love each other. Despite the burden of not being able to sleep without having to worry about money, we are strong together and my mom and my dad have done everything possible to give us a good life. But you see, no one is truly happy in my family. Our minds are all messed up now. Its all dark.
    Idk what im even trying to say, what my point is cuz rn im at my lowest but idk...idk if money can buy happiness or not, cuz I have never had that money! But i think, if i was well off, i would definitely be happier than I am right now. And I'm one hundred percent sure 'bout that.

      Research shows that money buys happiness up to a point. Middle class people are happiest, even though they complain the most. The real meaning is if you're not happy, MORE money won't help.

      You fully described my thought. I am full of bitterness by saying this but do they even think how money is so valuable for some people? If doing something that we love and being true to ourselves makes us happy, it still requires money to achieve it. Like you who can't take creative class, I really love music, I find myself happiest when I perform or play musical instruments (Experienced a glimpse of it when I was in high school) but when I back home, I don't have what it takes, guitar is already expensive for me, dare I dream to have a piano home.. Looking at my friends who buy guitar at ease, even having many instruments and music studio in their home, having instructor to teach them thing.. I could only dream. Then, I love clothes too, I often see people's outfits, etc. How to dress up like I want to when I can't even afford new clothes in more than (maybe) 3 years.
      I don't know why I'm writing this, I'm just frustrated at those people who says "money can't buy happiness." I believe it can, they just can't use it right. I might share too much unnecessary things idk, but I wish you happiness still.. With or without money.. Maybe I could learn to be like the monks who live with nothing but still feeling content, I wish.. Best wishes for you

      Not having enough money can bring sadness and despair.
      In our society, money is an integral part of personal growth, which also means usually satisfaction and happiness. However, too much of it can also get tricky on the mind since it gives immense power and possibilities but also will make other people look at you in another way.

    It is very interesting to see how people from abroad think about happiness and what it represents for them. I really love your videos, keep it up!!😄. By the way, I had already seen Mr. Yamato (food truck guy) before in other videos, I think he is well known by the Spanish people who live there.

    I think it’d be cool to do a few of these videos with more people.
    I left Japan after 6 years in 2019 to try something new back in the UK. All in all, my time was just really satisfying and I can easily say that it was the most happy period in my life and I still miss it a lot. But the 4 years since I left saw a lot of changes (Pandemic, cost of living to name just 2 things) and I’m really interested to know how it’s shaped attitudes since. The money discussion was interesting because I wonder if ‘money talk’ being a bit taboo has started to change because of price rises and salaries not really moving; the young salary man seemed to hint at it!

    "can money make you happy/buy you happiness" is a question that i will answer with the same as always, us, people, struggling with money can say that money can buy us happiness id rather be lonely with money instead of lonely without money. maybe if i have a lot i can change this mindset???

    • @j134679

      It buys happiness up to a certain point. In poor countries, money WILL buy happiness because you are already struggling for food, shelter, education, & health services.
      In developed countries like Japan, where all of those are easier to get, money technically buys less happiness.
      A rich person needs love more than money.

    3:43 This guy knows what he's talking about. Money can't buy you happiness (although it comes really close because money = freedom and that can lead to happiness), but TIME is something you can never get back. So spend it wisely and you'll be happier for it.
