I decided not to premiere this one because it's so long and I want you to be able to put me on double speed lol. Also the length doesn't spoil the video this time around because I finished all the books on my TBR even after I found a five star read!!
12:12 "There are 30 books in this series" No Kayla, Mistborn only has 3 books: The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages. It is a COMPLETE trilogy. You DO NOT have to read whatever else is in the expanded universe. Mistborn is just three books.
I read the Mistborn as a trilogy years ago, and did not have the urge to pick up the rest in the larger universe. And it is fine that way. However I would recommend you read the entire trilogy, because some things are changed and re-framed within the internal history of the book, and those are really good twists and make the books better as you go on. It is a quite rare feat to pull this off well, but Mistborn is a great example.
It's so funny. I was in Vancouver on vacation for the first two weeks of October. I had brought Darkfever with me to read. Like yourself, I struggled with it and considered dnf'ing. Then one night, the book fell into the narrow space between bed and wall and I didn't bother picking it out of there. Just checked out of the Airbnb and left it behind. 😂
I think your idea of finding more current favorites for some of those years would be fun. I also think you could do something where you challenge each year's favorite. Like get 3-5 books to read from each year, specifically one that you feel strongly could be favorites, and see if you find one that is better than whatever you have already listed!
The fact that you thought that Pavlova was a "basic" recipe, when even bakers that go on Masterchef (or whatever other cook show you can think) can't do it properly, it's so funny to me! I think you did great! haha
I started this project! I am not a booktuber but an avid reader and fan of your channel and some others. Now, I have been around quite a bit longer than you lol. So i started with Valley of the Dolls 1966! Wow, what a wild tale that is. Now I am on Logan's Run, 1967! I am only perusing the 'best books' of each year and selecting one, rather than reading a few. It's going to be fun!
Speaking of "On The Road" and "The Road" though, you should do a video on books with similar titles. I always get The Outsider and The Outsiders confused
i almost commented midway through the video “hey you forgot to rate these” but then at the end you got me!!!😂😂 your verbal reviews honestly did perfectly hint your rating!!
I always love your baking clips!!! I am from New Zealand (where pav was created), and it is hard!!! Nobody can make it without cracking the surface. You do NOT flip it over to fill it, it's more like frosting the top of a cake, but instead of frosting it's whipped cream and fruit. Nobody makes it right the first time, In my family we have to crack open the oven slightly and let it cool completely, hoping that it does not collapse haha. Try again with an Australian or New Zealand recipe!
Who would have thought that the first recommendation you got for the channel would be a five star? I'm so happy Mistborn got 4.5! That's the vibe I got from you. That's a book I've been meaning to read for a very long time. Loved the video! Congratulations to Liam!
you always have the most interesting and unique video ideas Kayla, i absolutely love your content! quickly have become my favourite book content creator 🥰
I think in the future when you read books from any of these years and give it a 5 start rating you have to compare and decide which one goes in the official chart!
If it helps mistborn is a trilogy and can be read in isolation! There is mistborn era 2 set hundreds of years later but it’s a sequel trilogy. Like it follows different characters and a different setting (I haven’t even read it.) And the rest of the cosmere isn’t needed unless you’re really compelled to read the brandy sandy cinematic universe Basically mistborn 1-3 tells a complete story. Anything beyond that is just for fun or for Easter eggs
im gonna need you to keep reading the Mistborn series!!! if you liked Elend and also are down for the scope of the story to expand, then you gotta pick up the next 2 books! they are soooo good
Kayla I’m so so so happy you read and enjoyed mistborn! I’ve only ever read the trilogy that book starts, well of ascension and final empire being the next books I think, and you’re so right that the pacing that allows you to never be bored is perfectly maintained. I’m glad I got your review of the road by cormac mccarthy as it reinforces my belief that I should not in fact read that book. Best wishes to you and your family as always ❤
Girl I love these videos so much but like...how on EARTH do you remember these years of your life?! What you read, did, saw, watched, etc. Impressive as heck.
Okay, okay. It blew my mind that you read Darkfever. My friend made me read it in high school and I binged the series (that was out) in a week. The FMC is so annoying in book one and she does get (marginally) better but I couldn’t imagine reading it now. You took one for the team bestie. 💜
The way I gasped when Kayla pulled up Darkfever omg, I dont know if I was the one to recommend it but I might as well have been because omg the choke hold this book series has on me is not even funny. And I do understand how ridiculous it is but I absolutely love it for it 😂❤ thanks for reading it Kayla you made my day
my high fantasy self giggling and kicking my feet after this intro + I read The Road in august and I swear since then I’ve been seeing it EVERYWHERE it’s actually haunting me
You definitely need to finish Mistborn Era 1! There’s only 3 books. Era 2 has 4 books but even though they are set in the same world, it’s set in a different time so you can read each arc separately. Most of Brandon Sanderson’s novels are interconnected. The worlds they are set on are all part of his universe called the Cosmere. But you don’t have to read them all. It’s more like finding Easter eggs for fans when you see references to other worlds and characters in the books.
I designed the ARC for Witchcraft for Wayward Girls (not the cover, but the spine/back/inside marketing page)!!! I've been watching you for years and it's so cool seeing you hold something I worked on. I hope you love the book!
I am happily relieved that you liked Mistborn. When you pulled it out of the jar so many months ago, I was so sure you were going to hate it since you like soft, unexplained magic systems and Brando Sando is notorious for his hard, thoroughly explained magic systems.
I wasn't specifically trying to guess the rating you gave each book, but The Thirteenth Tale was the only one that got me to open up my TBR and add it before the video ended, so I guess your feelings did get across! P.S. I was nervous about Mistborn but so glad you enjoyed it!
29:32 Sidhe seer: /she/ seer. The Sidhe are Celtic fae folk. Idk about the book’s meaning but irl a Sidhe seer can mean either one who can see the Folk or one of the Sidhe who is a seer or clairvoyant. (Source: several years of practice in Scottish and Irish paganism 😂)
As a twin, Darkfever pissed me off. Oftentimes it seems like she doesn't care that her sister was murdered. The FMC drove me mad. She never listened to the MMC when he was trying to help. She never tried to help herself. Honestly, I could rant about that book for eternity.
I've forgotten how old I am several times, mostly by accidentally rounding up halfway through one year and then forgetting I have done so.Glad I'm not the only one who isn't sure how old they are, LOL. I'm so glad The Thirteenth Tale was your 5 star. I loved that book. I should probably reread it.
I would never judge someone for their taste in books but I have to be honest... I struggle with people who loved Darkfever 😂 I just want to scoop them up into a hug and make sure they have access to good books.
okay as someone who considers joe abercrombie to be my favourite author i completely understand why you struggled with the first bookas it doesn't realy have a plot lol and it's really just a long introduction.but i hope you give it another chance via audiobook..tha narrator is soo good and gives the story so much life that you really don't notice that the book is just let's get to know these characters. sorry for the ramble but i realy realy realy love these books lol. also so sad that this series is ending and i would love to see the other variations you mentioned in 2025❤
I wasnt expecting this but i loooooooved mistborn. I buddyread the serie with Syd's patreon. Brandon Sanderson really is a mastermind at world building and storytelling. I probably should read more of this author
This has been such a great video series! Looking forward to seeing what you’ll come up with next 😄 I’m really considering choosing The Thirteenth Tale as my book club pick for November!
This is the comment I've been looking for 🙏🙏 I have been so intimidated by the volume of Brandon Sanderson books so it's good to hear this is a contained trilogy. I've only read Tress of the Emerald Sea (which I loved, 5 stars)
Finally got around to finishing this videp. Congrts on completing the series 🥳 Since you gave The Thirteen Tale a 5/5, I recommend you reading Once Upon a River by the same author
Okay, I rated Mistborn about 4~4.5/5 stars, sooooo I feel comfortable saying that you may like the next one, The Well of Ascension, even more. I had finished that one several months back and gave it 5/5 stars. So now I kind of want you to read at least the Mistborn trilogy (the last three apparently take place in a separate timeline in the future). I am sad that this series of yours is over though! I've had so much fun watching you read a book for every year you've been alive. It's inspired me to look for reads within years I haven't read a book for/haven't had a 5-star read for.
So funny, I am pretty certain I was reading Darkfever and the whole series in 2006, and I LOVED them, but my tastes have changed so much since then. I know I would have the same reaction as you if I read them today… because I also tried to read Mortal instruments a couple of years ago and it was terrible absolutely terrible. So funny how our ideas and opinions change as we get older.
The Thirteenth Tale is on my fall TBR and I haven’t been very excited about it but now you have me way more intrigued 😊 Mistborn was around a 4 star for me and I want to read The Lies of Locke Lamora too! This series was so fun!!

I started following you like two weeks ago? Idk. But in that time I have become obsessed with youuuu. Love your content. Keep up the good work, girlie. 🫶🏼
Karen Marie Moning has another series with modern women time traveling to medieval (?) Scotland. I remember it being super lighthearted and fun. I never really got into the Dark Fever series.
Okay but the older I get, the closer I get to looking up Buffy x Giles fanfic 😅 also, my name is Mikayla and I got a jumpscare every time you said it😂😂
The Blade Itself is one of my all time fav fantasy books. The audiobook by Steven Pacey is PHENOMENAL and on YT 👀👀 However, I 100% understand why you didn't like it and completely anticipated that. We rarely like the same novels 😂
I was so sad for you when I saw you were going to read Darkfever 😂 That is one of my least favourite books (that I've completed reading) of all time. On the other hand, The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favourites, so I'm glad you read and loved that 🎉

Idk about anyone else, but I am 100% fine with you dnf’ing a book that you are struggling to get through because it’s so bad.
as soon as darkfever came out when i was 8 years old i thought "i can't wait to hear what kayla thinks of this"
This made me cackle 😂
You should start a series finding a 5 star read for every letter of the alphabet!
@@lol123GNA hahaha I love this. I would guessss I already have one for each letter but who knows 🤔💕

Came here to say this.
YOU MENTIONING THE BLADE ITSELF LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA AND MISTBORN IN ONE INTRODUCTION NEARLY KILLED ME. excited and giddy.
Cooking from cookbooks from specific years is so fun and I hope you can incorporate more into future annal vlogs!
It's so funny. I was in Vancouver on vacation for the first two weeks of October. I had brought Darkfever with me to read. Like yourself, I struggled with it and considered dnf'ing.
