    I have listened to Big Ben sing In Fernem Land so many times over the years. The clarity of his diction, the incomparable tone and pitch of his voice. The degree to which he is in character, and the use of his eyes to express his joy. Yes, yes, his name is Lohengrin, son of Percival. Simply transporting. Thank you, Herr Hepner (I know he is Canadian :)

      John Schofield He had a great voice for the lighter Wagner-this role, Walter But something really went wrong, and he was not that old. I never heard a world class tenor with so many cracks in the later part of his career-he would be singing wonderfully, and then boom-I think it became too much for him
      I think Levine's pushing him into Tristan ruined his voice

    • @tenorschofield
      @tenorschofield 9 років тому +2

      +Labienus dear friend I am not so close to his performances,in the fact that saw him 3 times in live and the rest just in videos and Cd's (heard that,about him cracking quite frecuently).But I agree with you;when pushing a lyric tenor into heavy roles,he starts loosing the high placement in the high paladar and mask...he starts ussing too much glothis attacks!!!!. For sure,while respecting the enourmos diferences between maestro Heppner and myself,it happened to me. I studied with Alfredo Kraus (1996-97)and keep all the notes and indications;I retook this training and recovered my voice at my 50 years old (check my channel please). I am in the process still,but started to change the attacks from very high placement....this is working out.I guess that if I could,Ben Heppner by been far more talented,can also do it again.That us why I plead for his comming back.Best tegards,John Schofield (tenor)

    • @Labienus

      John Schofield Probably better to keep a successful world class career in some of the most demanding repertoire separate from personal aspirations
      There was a period where as a Jugendlicher (though there is often a difference about what roles are classified there) he was magnificent. I heard him in some of those roles, but later heard him a lot more where he cracked badly. I think it eroded his confidence, made him unacceptable to me, and I wondered how he was able to keep singing in public. I'm sure this wore him down. He would often explain it based on allergies and medication, and others did on a large weight loss (maybe why Botha remains huge)
      They may have been factors, but as I said Tristan at the end of a career (for his voice) would have been one thing, but in his core years, a role so placed in the middle of his voice, and such a trial of endurance - and yes changed the placement of his voice.
      Sorry, I think the last chance was his attempt at Siegfried-and then cancellations was the end. A lot of singers sort of fade out of a career,but Heppner's public and formal reitirement is the end. Also the years to have corrected the problems and made a "come back" have passed.

    I heard Ben Heppner when he was a first-year student at the University of British Columbia. The voice was huge but not placed, that took some time. His achievements since then are amazing. And he is admired as a person, whose warmth and humility come through in his commentaries on the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. I agree with those who hear him as a dramatic tenor not a heldentenor, and wish he'd left Tristan and Siegfried to others -- nevertheless, he is a great man.

    you want to hear Ben Heppner in one of the BEST "modern" Lohengrin's, check out the 1998 Met Opera production with James Levine conducting him in the title role along with Deborah Voigt as Elsa, Deborah Polaski as Ortrud, Hans-Joachim Ketelsen as Telramund, Eric Halfvarson as Konig Heinrich and Eike Wilm Schulte as an absolute POWERHOUSE Heerrufer.
    only complaint about the recording is that they got kind of "arty-smarty" with the "stage position" left-right sound and many arias are one sided.

    Great (Jugendlicher Helden) spinto tenor. I dont think of him as a dramatic/heldentenor based on his bright tone quality, and the lack of the baritonal warmth in the mid to low register. However he has a very hefty voice and a piercing ring.

    Sängerstimmen sind immer auch Geschmackssache - Bewertungen auf dieser Seite auch, vor allem wenn sie unter dem "Niveau" der Sänger liegen - mit wenig Sachkompetenz. Ich persönlich habe auch schon schwächere Aufnahemen von Herr Heppner gehört, diese ist sehr gut, aber er hier ist nicht in der Oper, wo er 4 oder mehr Stunden durchsingen muss! Thielemann dirigiert nicht alles ( gleich gut), aber das was er will (und das sind nur wenige Komponisten), kann er hervorragend!!

      I think I agree. Nice man, but he is neither Italiante, or a true Heldentenor. Rather thin over all tone. Bright certainly, but not quite a heroic ring. And his phrasing is a bit "square ", more noticable in Italian, where some portamenti would be welcome. Still, an intelligent and sincere artist.
