Watching her face at the end of this video, I cried. I had the good fortune to meet her backstage after a recital in San Francisco. She was so lovely, with such a tremendous personality, and I'll never, ever forget how she looked straight at me with those incredible eyes and gracious smile as she spoke to me and signed my program. She was incredible, immense, infinite. I'm a wreck right now... RIP, Jessye.

I had the great pleasure of playing in a small orchestra accompanying Miss Norman at a benefit concert 8 or 10 years ago. I can honestly say it was one of the 3 or 4 most thrilling moments in a 40-year career. A video like this can only hint at the enormous power she has at her disposal. She used it enchantingly.
Speaking of the video, I do wish the sound engineers would leave more of the dynamic contrast in. I suppose they remove it so we can listen to this on earbuds or in traffic without damaging our hearing, but so much of the drama lies in that contrast. Sigh.

In my opinion, the greatest recorded aria in existence.

The most beautiful declaration of love and at the same time, one of the most spectacular moments of Wagner's work and world opera. This same excerpt can be seen on UA-cam in a presentation by this magnificent singer Jessie Norman under the conduct of Karajan. He, who was always a stone statue when conducting, in that performance almost cried. How many times in our lives do we miss opportunities to declare our love to someone? Let's start doing this with those who are alive around us?

I wrote this tribute a week before Jessie Norman passed away. Life surprises us every day. I'm glad I declared my passion for her while she was between us. God bless you, dear Jessye.

This comment, along with this performance, made me cry. Beautifully said.
Does anyone know what this video is from? There's no curtain closing so I assume this is not from a staged production of the Opera.

It's not her own and unique thing. But I love her in it, her meticulousness towards text - both musical and verbal, the way she squeezes it all from each and every vowel, each and every note, with the utmost ejoyment and love towards the author's music, and her exceptional ability to recreate it. Jessie Norman is a unique eperience to encounter. The last diva. The last huge musician on opera stage.

That such a radiant diva could have graced an undeserving world with such power and expert beauty is a mystery.

No one is mentioning it in the comments so I guess I will. Those last few seconds of music, where she is no longer singing, but HER ACTING! MY GOD HER ACTING IN THOSE LAST FEW SECONDS OF MUSIC!!! She IS Isolde in those last few seconds. 6:09
Wagner would have preferred to call this piece Isolde's Verklärung (Transfiguration) not Liebestod (that name stuck because of Liszt). In those last few seconds Jessye Norman is transfigured. She IS being subsumed into the world breath's infinite all, swallowed, drowned, unconscious, highest bliss. 6:09
