  • A great physics toy: Hurricane Balls
    Two steel balls from a ball bearing glued together make an incredible spinning top and can even fly and spin extremly fast in compressed air. This video shows how to make them, how they work and how to have fun with them.

    When I was much younger I flew the "venerable" Boeing 727 for a major airline. The "gasper" vents in the cockpit at my seat pointed up via an adjustable gimbal mount, but generally towards the pilot's head. Out of sheer boredom, I used to balance the G.E.327 and 387 peanut light bulbs that were commonly installed in sockets under the glare shield, in that slip stream of air blowing up from the side mounted gasper outlet. The weighted metal contractor of the bulb, kept it perfectly dancing there for hours. Airplanes with stronger gasper fans could balance larger bulbs like the GE 755s. Kept me as entertained as this video. Spinning shinny stuff and I'm hypnotized.

      YankeeinSC1 I wish I had seen that, I flew the Last 2 72’s ever built. I know those lamps too. We use to see at Sears a beach ball spinning above the exhaust of a vacuum cleaner hose.

      What does imagination has to do with spinning balls?

    • @pepinillorick5741
      @pepinillorick5741 7 років тому

      there's no phisical contact, because of that there would be no loss of energy IF the spining ball's where magnet's producing energy. i mean, that thing seem's like it was pull out from a futuristic machine, i'm sure that some inteligent inventor can use this engine to run a generator. and that's an idea, you may do other things with that, if you use imagination ¿who knows?

    • @UltraMojo13
      @UltraMojo13 7 років тому

      Julian Lopez Zalazar There is friction from air particles, hence there is physical contact. Plus it is pure logic, if you understand fully what you see. And though I have a very strong imagination, it's not much needed here.

    • @pepinillorick5741
      @pepinillorick5741 7 років тому

      DoYouEvenMagicBruh but its friction between a gas and a solid, not a solid- solid system, and the diference its very significant because of that.
      And its easy to said that is pure logic once you have already see it, all cience its pure logic based on observation, the real creativite its in the conection's.

    How many attempts did you tried before you got it levitating? I been trying to get this working. I can do it with one sphere - no problem, but with two spheres the problem is how to get it spinning. I can get it to spin really fast in my hand but it starts to feel uncomfortambly hot. With a glove it's also hard because of extra wrinkles in the palm or extra friction..

    this makes perfect sense, dont know what makes both of em spin but me and my friends did experiments with golf balls shot out of a potato cannon and ones where it was 2 balls screwed together would always spin when you shot em, ones with holes drilled half way through would always whistle while they spun making sort of a fluctuating whistle, was some cool stuff, we shot other stuff too like a basketball air pump through a can of beans at like 700 miles an hour, the crazy shit was fun too, remember the other time we shot a floppy drive from a computer with a golf ball and it made it into a cone with all the little dimple marks from the golf ball imprinted on the thin sheet metal and everything, hit right where the motor and the meat of it was too

      Anson Trang all fine and dandy, but it just does not fit my frame how there can be such a sweetspot on a stream of air that can hold the balls in place. Not like they have some kind of special way of balancing them just two f-img balls glued together, what the heck. Next thing we know, there will be frictionless ball turbines, with 9 balls chewing-gummed together to create a 3-axis turbine.
      Physics books in 10 years be like...
      "-Name me 5 world's most powerful powerplants
      -Chinese water damb. The two Russian nuclear plants. Ugh... And in France... The.... ITER cold fusion plant and.... The ball plant...
      -That's right, the great ball power plant right next to ITER. The most powerful plant in the world, working on cowfarts"

    • @TheRealAnsontp
      @TheRealAnsontp 7 років тому

      +Juri Lentis First of all more "balls" do not increase power cause of the weight that is being increased, 2nd yes there is a sweet spot, 3rd have you heard of a steam engine??, lastly friction-less turbines can not be manned on Earth due to gravity, air resistance, and air's existence. Please understand that this is old tech being shown in a nutshell. We cant really harvest power from it...

    you should collaborate with the slowmo guys. It would be pretty cool to see how those balls rotating in the air in super slow motion

    What would happen if the ball bearings were neodymium magnets and they spun like this inside a copper or aluminum cage of some sort?

    Try putting the sphere in a tube and have the air blowing in from one direction and the other end blocked with something to prevent the sphere from flying out. Would love to see how fast they can spin before they lose it.

    I used to do this similar with tennis balls. They work good too.

    So you're using Bernoulli's principle to create a high pressure area in the front of the balls, and a low pressure area behind. The stability is derived from that same principle with areas of high and low pressure based on where in the flow the ball is sitting. So the rotation is just gyroscopic in nature to allow for continued stability even while suspended in the air stream?

    I just imagined the earth spinning from the solar wind, it could go on forever if it was in a vacuum ...whoa it is :)

    Try gluing it like this
    (0) (00) (0)
    (0)
    Is metal ball
    (00)
    Is an magnet glued to 2 balls
    This will maybe create an plasma thunder
    Btw i tried it and it does create an mini thunder shock
