  • This is a demonstration my unconventional Spinning Tops
with a very high center of gravity.
I made them on my Chinese mini lathe and mini mill out of round and hex brass and copper stock, balls from ball bearings, threaded rods from the hardware store and 3mm rods from old CD-ROM drives and of course golf balls, a 2 € coin, a tungsten ring (ebay jewelry), ball bearings, etc. I didn't draw any plans, but the dimensions are not critical, so it's enough to eyeball the dimensions if you want to make them by yourself.
Transcript of annotations (to help search engines):
    Welcome to my Spinning Tops
Normal Spinning Tops have a very low Center of gravity
The Spinning Tops that I made have their center of gravity at the top.
You might think, that makes them very unstable.
But in fact they are very stable and run for a long time.
But it's difficult to start them.
You can't start them by hand (without a special tool).
The surface they are running on is a cheap concave bathroom mirror.
I poured plaster into it to make it more rigid and stable.
The top running on the fabrics looks like a badly made stop motion animation.
This is the device that I made to start them.
4 ball bearings to hold the axis of the spinning top and a hole between them for the string.
And three adjustable feet to hold the device leveled over the ground
The tops run very fast and make a lot of wind.
    Measuring the speed of rotation
    12378 RPM
    2 € coin
Line made of Ultra-high-molecular- weight polyethylene
    aka fishing line
The slow decline of the ? begins...
Sorry for the noise of the tripod head that I was moving down.
    Brass disc
Yes it looks fake, but it's real!
The outer ring is made of tungsten carbide.
    The Euro again...
20 mm ball from ball bearing.
    Brass disc
    15 cm (6 inches)
The ball is made of brass. The diameter is 30mm (that's 1 and 13/64th of an inch 8-) )
    ball with a flat surface
    Copper ball
    Are they playing soccer ?
    What a bad foul !
    Let's play golf !
    grrrrr....
    Bad idea...
    air drag too high
    Very bad idea...
    Thanks for watching.

I have to say, love your work. After over 40 years as a machinist, I appreciate what a machinist has to go through to achieve such good results. Keep up the work, you are the one to watch.

First of all I just wanted you to know that your videos are absolutely fascinating and the craftsmanship you demonstrate is remarkable creativity. You have given new meaning to the precision and your creativity is off the charts. I have not watched all of your videos yet, but I have been binge watching for about three hours now. I would love to own some of your creations, they are all so mesmerizing. Watching the T-shaped tops, I wonder what would happen if they were designed like a propeller??? Also curious as to what kind of Frisbee designs you could come up with, and for that matter boomerangs, and any other aerodynamic flying toys. Thanks for all the work you put into your creations and thank you for sharing how you create and how your creations do what they do. I am a big fan of your art, the dancing tops was like a ballet, the designs are so unique, the knowledge and imagination you have is inspirational and has opened up a new world of questions regarding energy, magnetism, aerodynamics, true science. Thanks again for sharing your videos.

once as a young boy I made a balsa rubber band achilles model plane the engine was so effective it took off by it's own power

It's easy to spin these by hand with a little practice. You just hold the thin tip between your thumb and third finger, and do a snapping motion. As you do this, you pull your hand out of the way so the top can drop to the surface. Of course, this assumes it's okay for the top to drop a bit onto the surface. If you'd rather do it more gently, you first drop it onto some cheap plastic sheet to absorb the impact, and then slip the sheet out from under the top from almost no height.

Dang, that little launcher tool is awesome! I've wanted to create something like this for my Prometheus Lambda top for a long time! I'm able to spin it for 12+ minutes by hand; I can't even imagine how long it would spin with a launching mechanism like that.

The high center of gravity does make them very unstable in comparison to normal spinning tops. But the precession is still stabilizing them. that also leads to shorter spin-times. The instability causes more wobbling, so more precessioning and that again is using up more of the angular momentum.

make one with a graphite tip; low friction bearing surface and it draws on paper!

It looks kinda steampunk... People gambling on tops similar to these to see whose lasts the longest... Kinda interesting to think
