  • Mt. Columbia is one of the "50 Classic Ski Descents of North America" and is the highest mountain in Alberta. It was an unforgettable experience during the May long weekend of 2022. With perfect conditions and a stunning backdrop, it was the perfect way to spend the holiday! Although the mountain is notoriously large and difficult to traverse, it was definitely worth the effort! If you're an experienced mountaineer and have the right weather window, then Mt. Columbia should be at the top of your list for a memorable adventure!

ski toured Mt. Columbia quite a few years ago. Was an awesome experience. I never really thought that it was sad that the glacier is receeding. It has been receeding for about 10 000 years. You see . . . we have been coming out of an ice age for thousands of years. This is the cycle of the Earth. We just happen to be living in a warming stage. We will not live to see the glacier fully melt, but it will probably happen in a few more generations.

Jay, I appreciate you watching the video, thanks for checking it out. I have a MSc in Geology from the University of Munich, and part of my degree was focused on climate science, and geologic changes over time. We learned that the earth has gone through plenty of warming and cooling cycles in the past. That is not the issue, the issue is the rate of change. As the temperature is changing much faster than the geologic record. There is no real denying that humans are impacting the rate which the earth is warming up, and the science is very clear. The issue is that we don't want to end up with a runaway greenhouse gas effect which happened to Venus. If you are interested in this topic I have some interesting videos on planetary science/climate change which I could send you. Thanks again for checking out my channel! 😀

@@TisTheSkisonI am a bit of a geology buff myself. it would be interesting to see how this current period of global warming compares to the end of the last ice age. i doubt that there is any empirical evidence that can measure previous cooling and warming periods that are accurate enough to compare with our current situation. please attach some links if you have them. i ma always fascinated to learn more.

@@jaytabac6525 Thanks for the nice response, having a reasonable conversation on the internet seems to be rarer and rarer these days! If you type in "How is Today’s Warming Different from the Past?" into google. The first article that comes up should be from NASA and it's a great summary. Venus is a great case study of what happens when you get a runaway GHG effect and there are a lot of interesting articles on what this looks like. This is why the planet is hotter than Mercury even though it's further from the sun! But either way, I don't see all warming as bad, I think humans have affected this planet which just shows how powerful we are as a species, and we will likely never see another ice age again (unless the oceans currents get cut off), but I think in the future we will be able to regulate the temperature for an optimal if we can all get on the same page!
