  • Ruger LCP 380 pistol review 380 auto pistol guide w/PostmasterPrepper
    The Ruger LCP is a great concealed carry choice in the 380 caliber. In this video I review the Ruger LCP pistol that shoots 380 auto ammunition. I talk about some of the features of the gun as well as why this gun may be a perfect concealed carry weapon. I also talk about some of the different types of ammunition for the gun.
    Remember that this gun can NOT handle +P ammunition, and it also has no safety devices. The only safety is the one between your ears, so use your brain any time that you are handling a firearm.

    I own two LCP .380s. They are the new or upgraded models of the first ones which fixed a potential problem with going off when accidentally dropped. The .380, in my opinion, is an adequate caliber for personal defense at close range. I wouldn't carry it as a duty weapon but the .380 is, as I said, adequate. As a retired LEO, I have seen people killed with .22s & .25s back in the day when Raven .25s and Jennings 22s were sold. I remember in the very early 70s, being able to buy Ravens for around $30.00 - $ 39.00 in the LA area. They were inexpensive. I don't use the word cheap here, because they functioned quite well. Poor people bought them for home protection due to the cost... So did gangbangers. In 1970 I bought a Bernardelli .380 as a secondary backup to my Chief's Special and that was a good and reliable shooter. It is personal preference and what you are comfortable with. Remember the old saying... I would rather be missed by a .44 than hit by a .22. A .22 is better than nothing but I do believe the .380 is a great close range gun and the LCP is a great & reliable shooter which is much more concealable than the Bernardelli was and that was a good old gun. Wish I never got rid of it.

      I just retired last Nov I carried an LCP as a back up gun for 10 years only problem I had was even in my pocket holster it would get body sweat on it and get light rust on it during the summer months I had to oil the finish after every shift I do still have it and do carry it from time to time I like carring my Glock 19 most of the time due to mag capacity

    The Ruger LCP 380 does not get the credit it deserves. It is light, small, reliable, easy to conceal, right on target, and easy to clean. I bought my first in 2009 and my second in 2019 for fear of discontinue to manufacture, which I seriously doubt it because this is Ruger's best selling little firearm. Loved my first and also my second one. The second one has slightly bigger sights so it gives you that extra edge when target practice at the range and the trigger pull is shorter. Nice, I like it. First time on the range for both were flawless. I went to Academy to check for sales and was given a 20 dollar discount when I purchase anything over 100 dollars. So my LCP Ruger 380 came up to 180 dollars. Sweet deal. Academy has the best customer service ever, I love it. If you don't believe me, just visit them once, you will be impressed.

    I had the first model, I ran a lot of drop tests on it because of the recall , it never fired on a drop ! I I almost didn’t send it back , but I did they sent it back with two extra mags and mag extensions and a hat ! The turnaround was less than 5 days!

    I keep hearing people say the .380 is a bare minimum round for self defense. From 25-30 ft. with fmj at a 2 by 12 board,leaves a perfectly round exit hole without any splinters. What would that do to a person in a self defense situation? It's much more than "bare minimum".

    • @davidmarks5400
      @davidmarks5400 10 місяців тому

      The way I hear it is that a lot of people are saying for self defense it's bare minimum,or as the worn out cliche I hear "better than a sharp stick" . In a confrontation,the distances would probably be less than 25 ft. The LCP would be accurate enough. At that approximate distance through a 2 by 12 board the .380 fmj went through clean without splinters out the back. IMO that would be more than bare minimum to flesh and bone. Certainly miles better than a sharp stick. @bstemple

    I've had my LCP for over two years, and have put 500+ rounds through it without any trouble at all. Despite its small size, and my big hands, I find it easy to hit center mass in targets at defensive distances - 15 to 25 yards. My Glock 26, when brand new, jammed several times (about once per magazine fired) until it was broken in somewhat, but from the first round to the last, my LCP has worked flawlessly. I have a newer model, with the slightly larger sights and the serial number without the dash, and it's possible Ruger updated/improved other aspects of the gun at that point. I use a De Santis G3 pocket sleeve holster, which keeps it nicely hidden but easy to draw safely - comes out with my hand fully wrapped around the grip, and my index finger straight along the frame of the gun, never inside the trigger guard. I feel very comfortable carrying the gun, and have no worries over accidental discharge or ammo exploding or even jamming. Your results may vary...

      LabTech45 Prepper that’s odd my 26 has been flawless. My son had a 1 FTE but I think it was from limp wristing. I’ve never had a failure with it . I just picked up the LCP. I haven’t shot it so I can’t comment on it yet. But all these videos I’m seeing are looking promising

    Thank you for this video. I have a LCP was thinking about getting rid of it because of the size. When I saw this, it confirmed for me it has the stopping power for a pocket pistol. This pistol is definitely for up close and personal contact. Point and shoot. I carry my compact 9mm but it's a little heavy, the LCP I don't feel it on me but I know it's there. Better to have this than nothing at all. Better to have this than a Hi-Point! ( LMAO 😂 😂)

    I have XLG hands too and carry my LCP w/the factory 7 round mag & a Hogue grip sleeve. A drop of white paint on the front sight and it’s the perfect pocket gun. Over 400 rounds of FMJ & HP absent a single malfunction. UPDATE 5/25: Still carrying & shooting my LCP and it continues to run absent a single failure. I even loaded individual mags w/different brands & styles of ammo, trying to induce a failure, and it still ran 100%. This little gun is accurate out to 10 yards which should be adequate for any self defense encounter.

  • @getx1265
    @getx1265 8 років тому +5

    Nice thorough review...although I wish you would hold the gun still for longer periods. I've had my 2nd gen LCP (no hyphen in serial#) for several weeks with absolutely NO problems. Right out of the box it was reasonably accurate at 7yds and actually kind of fun to shoot. Because of its petite size and rounded edges, it is a perfect, quality gun to carry very easily. I had been looking for the perfect pocket carry pistol. This is it! I have large, not huge guy hands, but to me, the pinkie extension on the magazine is just too annoying AND increases the size, making it a bit harder to cleanly draw from a pocket. I had to replace it with the provided flat plate on the other magazines bought. I definitely would recommend a pocket holster so as to limit the gun from rotating in your pocket. It is best to have it in an upright, constant position, even though initially I din't think this would be a concern at all. I have a kydex (summer sweat concern) as well as the little pocket pouch you showed. Both will do well, I'm sure. Thx for your good review of a great little pistol! ;-)

    A lot of internet firearm experts and self defense gurus despise small calibers for defense. Spending time in Asia, we all duck and hide whenever we hear gunshots. We treat all gunshots as potentially deadly. We don't consider small caliber gunfire as non-lethal.

    The crowd always has an opinion:
    But but the LCP2 or LCPMax or whatever is better!!!
    Boys and girls it’s the size the LCP is amazing small yet perfect size. Very quickly in this small pistol market you can drift to more rounds and more this and more that. In the end you go back to the basics. LCP is perfect.

    With jacketed/bonded ammo I have had no issues with a LCP. Every LCP I have shot has issues with 100gr plated bullets. Freedom Munitions 100gr jams every couple shots. I have no problems with the 102gr golden sabres. Fiocchi 95gr FMJ runs flawlessly. I can usually find Fiocchi 95gr FMJ for $15 a box of 50. Watch your favorite ammo search engine for bargains on ammo. I have tested the original flat top LCP, the post 2013 LCP and the LCP Custom. I have had best results for SD with Double Tap 95gr. Controlled Expansion JHP. Underwoods loading of the Hornady XTP is a close second. If you cannot afford double tap the Underwood is very good. In fact, any standard pressure loading of the XTP bullet has performed well.

    I think the +p .380 ammo out there is not a true +p just a marketing tactic to let consumers know their ammo is loaded to max pressure as compared to most ammo manufactures. The majority load .380 ammo to only 15,000 to 19,000 psi, while the max psi is 21,500 psi. So when loaded to 21,500 you can say by comparison it is a +p round, as in more psi than other loads out there. I like the XTP bullet at about 900 fps for penetration with some expansion. Ammo with more expansion will get less penetration.

    Well I decided to get one..Mag will not go in unless u smash it very hard or hold mag release. Stops at the lAst two circles . But my gun store uses the guns your buying as displays unlike Cabelas and sportsman warehouse. They use non firing guns as displays. So this means the gun your buying at my gun store. Million finger prints is on it. The buying is off of it a bit too. Too reddish looking on slide. And I never dry fire my guns. And that's all they do every time I go in the gun store is dry firing seeing what the trigger pull is like etc. Well so they throw the bag it's wrapped in when they getbitboutvto display it and if there's any sort of plastic thing in the chamber like some guns come with new. They throw that away too..And me I'm a collector of everything the gun comes with. Should of went to sportsman warehouse. Bc now I'm thinking a million hands has been on it. I'm picky lol.

    "Dry Fire with out damaging the gun"?????? Did a .380 Ruger LCP some how become rim fire in conjunction to also being very, very, very old???? It's ok to dry fire a Ruger LCP. They say it from the factory and Ruger is good about supporting their claims.

    A great gun from Ruger a terrible gun for the range. Nice to have in your pocket when some a-hole tries to rob you at close range but terrible for taking to the range for casual shooting.

    REALLY??!!???? IT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE....IN REAL LIFE the KAHR CW380 IS A MUCH, MUCH BETTER PISTOL. THIS is the less expensive Kahr and closer to price of LCP. The LCP is CHEAP & DANGEROUS. Mine BLEW UP IN MY HAND. Using regular factory ammo, NOT +P, Not reload. Even if it was a hot load, the LCP is made SO CHEAP it cant handle that? How much extra power could a 380 even have? Well, enough to blow the gun apart. I am lucky to be alive and not hurt bad. I did suffer a hand injury but overall no shrapnel hit me(it did fly everywhere) and I told Ruger I did NOT want another LCP. I got the 9E instead. That is a VERY NICE gun. I know it is not a small carry gun so I got the Kahr CW380 which shoots like a dream compared to the LCP. No snappy, kicky bite to it AND it actually has sites you can use and that work! The LCP is useless to even try to aim, the sites are a joke. The Kahr is small and really about as compact, just made much better. I know the CW is not the P model but it seems to be made just as well, not quite the milling of slide but who cares about that. So just know if you carry, have or plan to get a Ruger LCP, be very careful as they are not made well at all. Gun Explodes, Ruger LCP blows apart when I was shooting it.

    • @PostmasterPrepper
      @PostmasterPrepper  9 років тому

      That's definitely a scary story, but what else was involved in this incident? Did you accidentally (or purposely) shoot +P ammunition in this gun, or were you using reloaded ammo? Ruger specifically says not to use either of those types of ammo because of this exact scenario. Also, when did you purchase your LCP, maybe it was an older model? I have shot hundreds of rounds through mine and have had no problem. Also, you have to keep in mind that this is NOT an every day range gun, and that it is not meant to handle thousands of rounds of ammo. While it more than likely can handle thousands of rounds, the gun's reliability is likely to be shot by then and kind of destroys the self protection aspect of it. I'm just really curious to see how this happened and what Ruger came back with as a reason this happened.

    • @9mmsteve
      @9mmsteve 9 років тому

      Remington Factory Ammo, NO PLUS P, NO RELOAD. Even if due to strong factory load shouldn't it be able to handle that? It is a small caliber bullet...but the gun blew apart. If shrapnel would have hit me in face or head I would have been injured VERY bad. Luckily it did not hit me but it went flying everywhere.

    • @richarddilorenzo8188
      @richarddilorenzo8188 9 років тому +1

      BTW - I've seen MULTIPLE youtube videos dealing with the lack of reliability of the Kahr, Yours is the only one I've seen about the catastrophic failure of a Ruger LCP.

    • @9mmsteve
      @9mmsteve 9 років тому +1

      Really? You need to speak to many others who had horrible problems. Just because they did not make a youtube does not mean anything. Plus all you have to do is look at the 2 guns and you can see how well made the Kahr is. The Kahr is rated for +P but the Ruger says DO NOT USE +P. Go ahead and get your LCP, use your LCP and hopefully you do not have the same thing happen. The only reason I am telling people is to let them know what happened to me and warn them.

      so you're saying you have direct communication with many other people who have had horrible problems?? you made a thread on rugerpistolforums and never even returned to reply to others post.....yeah you had a problem with AMMO but instantly blame the gun, the cw380 is crap in comparison I have both.... the kahr feels better and has sights but it is very finicky, so much so its untrustworthy ... your situation was a fluke and feel its time you get over yourself....

  • @williamhervey6409
    @williamhervey6409 3 роки тому

    .380 is also known as 9x17, it is a 9mm round, not kinda less powerful but always, in the mean time still a viable self defense load.....sorry but if you're going to make a video about it you should research at least that much

  • @JCogs94

    Could have cost you your life? Are you kidding me? You mean to tell me that if you fire off a magazine, you are going to lock the slide back before you load another magazine because you can chamber a round unsafely? I should've stopped watching this video when I saw you tossing your LCP around in your hand like it was a toy.

    The saying that "the best gun is the one you have on you when you need it" is a bunch of crap. It is just a means of making an excuse for being lazy and not putting much time or effort into your carry system. I always have an lcp AND either a glock 27 or a glock 23 on my person. Summer or winter, they conceal just fine.
    The best gun is the gun that does the job as effectively and efficiently as possible, is comfortable for the carrier to carry, and so forth. Don't be lazy; anyone that can conceal an lcp can conceal an lc9, a pm9, a G26/27, or a G43. It just takes effort and thought.

      @46ace 9 років тому +1

      Docprepper Dude don't take this personally; I see your line of thinking all over the comments sections:
      Comes a time you need reassess your life choices. I'm 55+, have a state ccw, and carry ; I carried a federal badge and .45 acp 1911 (and then an m9) concealed for almost a decade.
      (Luckily) I have yet to draw a firearm on anyone.
      If you (i.e. any civilian) feel a need to carry a service pistol daily. Perhaps you need move to a better neighborhood or frequent higher class establishments. Or not be belligerent when interacting with folks.a .380 is fine unless you get into a running gun battle. I'm a big fan of the "Mossad" line of thought re: "small" caliber ; "foom-foom" ( shoot twice; always).

    • @Docprepper
      @Docprepper 9 років тому

      I live in a nation where predators are still lurking and still prey on the weak. You claim to be a former federal agent. You should agree that, though a gun in the hand is better that two in the house/car, the best gun is the gun that does the job the most effectively and efficiently.
      I never doubted the .380; I just stated that it is not the best round and that, if one can carry a .380, one can usually carry a single stack 9mm with just a little preparation and thought.

    • @46ace
      @46ace 9 років тому

      I don't know where you live. I currently carry a single stack 9 also. but I'm considering stepping "down" to the .380.
      I can argue "best" either way ;but don't intend to spend my morning arguing on the 'net.
      If you feel the need for such ordinance; well I still believe that's up to you. Personally, in my situation; I don't.
      Again my comment is less directed at your comment than the internet "gunnies" in general. S'all good. Have a great day.
