Ah, #1... Oh how I love #1. But you should know that, considering I was the winner of that speedrun contest you held for it so long ago. Never did receive the poster part of the prize though, and sadly all evidence of the contest itself was wiped out due to the same purge that the NG+ series is fixing... The only evidence I have left is the entry video itself, still sitting on my UA-cam channel underneath all the LPs I've done since. Not even the save file itself remains due to a glitch erasing all of them... I also did a LP of that game back when I thought it would be the end of my channel (Smash Ultimate informed me otherwise), and also a straight review of it for a different contest (didn't win, but I'm still proud of the effort), during which the aforementioned glitch had struck (thankfully _after_ I'd finished all the late-game footage).

Your top pick surprised me to say the least and I couldn’t be more happier about it ! That game is my childhood favorite. Just good memories of staying at my grandmas house and playing her snes. The best nostalgia ever man.
"Only one game per franchise"
Oh thank god, i thought at least three of the games where just going to be mario.
I mean... technically 😂
Yesn’t
eggsactly
I was afraid two of them would be the two Super Mario World games.
Rayman Origins/Legends + Tropical Freeze. Peak 2D platformers
Glad to see another fan of Super Mario World! That is what I call “Huge Plays”!
Glad to see there is another one too!
10:48 satisfying is the key word to describe Shovel Knight. I don't know what is it exactly, but that game just gets you addicted to it.
The amount of god 2D games is insane tbh considered how many 3D games are around now
So true! There are still many games from the 80s and 90s that are so much better than the games nowadays. Especially in the platformer and RPG genre
Honestly I think the improvements in technology have been to 2D's benefit. Old platformers were great - but new ones make perfect use of improved graphics, finer control movements and increased RAM capacity for bigger and better level design.
My top 3 are
1. Sonic 3 and Knuckles
2. Megaman X
3. Shantae and the pirate's curse
Jirard: "You can't go wrong with any of the Mega Man X games"
Me: "Uhhh, X6 and X7, no?"
If the Completionist does end up doing a top 10 Metroidvania list...I sure hope he ends up playing Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom before then lol. It really is an astounding piece of work.
For me it's Super Mario World at the top of the list with DKC2 as a great second.
I personally have celeste as my favorite (if we are still going by the no metroidvania rule) (oh also kirby's epic yarn is close)
This is the way
Agreed, Super Mario World is one of these Games that Everyone should Play at least 1 Time in their Lives
@@placeholdername3123 Hollow Knight?
@@kirbyfazendoummoonwalk9214 yeah lol hollow knight complicates things
your # 2 is my number 1 all time favorite game! this list is great! wish it had some honorable mentions though. like the messenger, played that game cause of one of your videos and you were right! it's a fantastic game! thanks for being awesome Jirard. keep up the good work!
Can we agree there's a "3 kings" engraved in history. Untochable in the ages: Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Yoshi's Island will always make top 10 in any list, like forever... . Such classics...
I’m playing Shantae & the pirates curse right now. Absolutely loving it. The cut scene are a bit awkward wt the clothing the girls are rocking but the game is fun af. I got away from 2D games for yrs but I’m happy to get back to my roots.
Ranking the top 10 2D platformers has to be like choosing the top 10 foods. They’re all good (or bad) for a specific reason.
That can be said for just about anything
That literally describes anything
Guys, guys. What I’m trying to say is ranking foods is incredibly hard, and so is ranking 2D platformers.
@@strrjms yeah, the message wasn’t lost on us. We got it. What we’re saying is ranking anything can be hard for that exact set of reason. Ranking dogs is hard because some dogs are good (or bad) for a specific reason. The comment was just dumb not confusing
@@TheWillrocks51 the comment makes perfect sense. It’s not their fault people like to nitpick and suck the fun out of everything.
HUGE PLAYS throwing DKC2 at number 1 I love it and have always wondered why every episode of yours features a song or remix but didn't have its own dedicated episode! Its also my #1 platformer and top 5 all time
Man, the day the completionist episode on DKC2 comes out, I'm gonna bawl my eyes out.
I was going to make a 'Jirard sucks' "Joke" but I could not do it. Jirard, keep on keeping on. Your vibe is a beacon of light to the rest of youtube. What we can all strive to be.
Oh yes! Really happy to see the number 1 game reaching the spot it deserves!
Jirard: The rule is I can only list one game per series.
also Jerard: Super Mario World 2 at #7, Super Mario World at #3
He included the whole series.
Plus super mario world 2 and dkc 2.
Has 4 mario titles.
I just finished Horace and it's one of the best 2D platformers I have ever played
Interesting choices, thank YOu
Well you can say what you want, but my favorite 2d Mario game has to be Super Mario Maker 2.
love your commentary and your game choices, please keep this series coming
Some of my favorites, in no particular order:
Sonic 2 (Mobile version)
Mario World
Mario Bros 3
Rayman Legends
Cuphead
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Sonic Mania
Donkey Kong Country 2
Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
Ori And The Blind Forest
Hey, nice list. Specially because Mario World and 3... Those are like two of my favorite games of all-time... But still, Sonic Mania, Sonic 2, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Tropical Freeze, those are awesome games.
So happy you went for Super Mario World while also getting my other favourite SNES platformers in there too...you nailed this list man and you can tell how much they all meant to you! Big love as always ❤️
Jirard: "1 game per series"
Also Jirard: Puts 3 Mario games on the list
4 mario games
Fantastic 10/10 I LOVE how you had Celeste in here! As a recommendation I'd love to see a video of the 10 hardest 2d platforms :)
And thus begins Jirard's most indecisive hours as he makes the most difficult list he has ever (and will have ever) made.
not only do I whole heartedly agree with the list since most of these are some of my favorite games of all time I agree with your musical tastes as well since I own most of the original soundtracks and have picked up so many remixes of the music over the years, these games are just the gifts that keep on giving
Honorable mention : Cuphead
Cuphead is less focused on platforming and is more of a boss rush. So I feel that it is an entirely different thing and is not a 2d platformer.
@@tolstartheking sonic mania is just holding right, the fun is from going fast through fairly easy platforming.
Cuphead is a bosh rush but the whole game is difficult platforming.
*celeste*
Cuphead is a fantastic game which doesn’t have jack shit on sonic to Mario three Mario world symphony of the night etc. Cuphead should’ve come out in 1991. It would’ve been a bigger hit.
@@miamimagiciansbigger than being mentioned all the time as one of the greatest games?
Everyone who has followed you or your content for more than 5 minutes automatically knew what #1 would be. Great list!
Where’s rayman it’s one of the best platformer of the last generation
It should be here, but I am just assuming that he is looking at this through the perspective of a completionist, and the levels of awesomeness, are horrific, especially reaching max level for the achievements
I mean I’m pretty sure he didn’t like the completion process of ray man that much so that will affect his opinion
Rayman legends should be top 3 at least wtf
@@bubbyjon That's not an excuse to not including at least Origins.
@@dankolord most likely hasn't played origins
Great video brother.. I can’t even argue with your list it’s pretty solid to me
I knew it wouldn't happen but I was hoping for Spelunky none the less.
Super Mario Land 2 came out when I was 9 and I adored it so much that I'm pretty sure it's the reason I'm still gaming nearly 3 decades later.
Thanks for showing it some love!
Needed to come down to the comments to shout out "Super Castlevania!"
Hey Jirard, this was a GREAT list. For real. You had a solid balance of old and new, mainstream and indie. Just a wonderfully well balanced list.
I'm not really sure what my favorites would be, but it'd probably include Kirby's Epic Yarn, Ristar, and Nihilumbra, all of which I don't think get enough love.
One per franchise yet has 3 mario games lmao
Oh, that’s a very good list. You killed me by showing but not listing VVVVVV though. That game blew my mind in gameplay, soundtrack, and charm. Oh! And BRAID.
i would put rayman legends in the top 10 instead of two mario games.
Or Yooka Laylee
@@krumdo yooka laylee was already on the list so no
I want a best metroidvanias list just so I can see hollow knight on there.
he can put silksong in there as well, doesn't matter it didn't came out yet
The obsession with HK is kinda ridiculous by now... it's a great game, yes, but now move on.
@@Ray_2112 no.
@@Ray_2112 ? You're the one who labeled it obsession my dude. Oot obsession much? Botw? Splatoon? Fire emblem? Binding of Isaac? Undertale & Sans? Banjo Kazooie? People are fans of tons of games and if they love it so be it, let them be
@@Ray_2112 shutup
Love the list!!! Like most are saying in the comments now do your top 10 metroidvania games!
You don’t suck, and I now have an irrational fear of dkc2
Rayman Legends, along with Celeste, are my favorite 2D platformers and some of my favorite games OAT. I’m glad you recognized both in this video (even if you just put a clip from Rayman Legends at the start).
i love that companies are returning to these, it feels good and like they CARE about their properties
Love your video and the way you talk about those game , you make me wanna discover some game or when you give your rating it helo me decide if i wanna or not conplette de game. Tanks dor all your work Girard :)
Is he ever gonna complete Shovel Knight Treasure Trove?
Funny enough that I beat Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair today and see it in your video just hovering over the thumbnail. I really like the game a lot
Speaking of Banjo, I really want Banjo-Threeie.
You and everybody else, bud
*cries in Nuts and Bolts*
NIce, I am currently playing the Mega Man Zero series for the first time since plenty of people said its really good. Great video Jirard. Here's some recommended games to complete if you want bro: The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and X-men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse.
If donkey kong country on SNES is not top 3 I’m gonna be mad.
Edit: I’m calm.
Ah....Jirard.....you sneaky beardman...two mario games lol. Seriously though it is almost impossible for you not to have both Super Mario World and Super Mario Land 2 with their legacy to you and this channel. Heck I would have a even worse time doing this same list and not having Mario in the mix multiple times with his humongous impact on platforming over all. None the less awesome video. Really enjoyed seeing some of your favorite 2d platformers.
Him: "NO metroidvanias, just 2D platformers"
Also him: "Here's a semi-3D platformer"
Also him: "Here's Megaman"
Both of those games are 2d platformers. 2d platformer is a genre not an art style so yooka laylee is fine despite having a 2.5D art style. And I don’t even know why you said “here’s mega man” when mega man X is very clearly a 2d platformer lmao
The Donkey Kong Country games are the absolute best 2D platfofmers and my favorite. So happy we got returns and Tropical Freeze cause they were greagt additions to the series as a whole! Can't wait for the next one.
Damn, until you said no metroidvanias I was about to comment Hollow Knight
Hollow knight sucks
Me too dude, honestly Hollow Knight is my favorite game
@@chesspunk489 idk its Definitely not as good as Everyone make it out to be, but its a Pretty good Game
@@kirbyfazendoummoonwalk9214 Disagree with you on that one imo. Storytelling through world design, a game that branches off leaving you with the tools to choose how and where you want to proceed, with unforgiving combat and platforming, balanced by thousands of charm combinations to keep it refreshing. If anything could be faulted perhaps it would be the plot of lack of depth filled characters-but the white palace flashbacks, learning about the King and Queen and their five defenders, and the original hollow knight was enough to keep my satisfied. A unique art design and score, a lengthy full “campaign” for the 15$ price, not to mention there’s multiple amazing DLC for free....it’s undoubtedly worthy of the praise.
@@derickstark4261 Agree, Thats the only game i have ever Regreted Pirateating, it is a Amazing Game
I just dont think its the best 2D Platformer of all time
"Only one game per franchise" Mario Land 2, Yoshi's Island, and Mario World... I was looking forward to hearing you talk about Rayman Legends, which you teased at the beginning of the video!
For some reason, I wanted AVGN Adventures as a Honorable Mentions.
Agreed
Yes, every 2d game in one!
That's a very mediocre game. It wouldn't make a top 50.
@@19Szabolcs91 you're allowed to be wrong
Not the original, but AVGN I & II deluxe is phenomenal m.
Love the list, i was hoping for some platformer i didn't knew but it wasn't the case this time, just a little sad the messenger wasn't here tough
“one per franchise” ...includes three Mario games
4....Mario & DK are part of the same overall franchise
@Tom Ffrench Mario & DK in Punch-Out are cameos or guest appearances...whereas the Mario series itself is literally a spin-off of Donkey Kong. They fall under the same franchise umbrella.
Great vid man! Love your top tens
I don’t know if he has ever played it but I always absolutely loved the platforming in N, N+ and N++ it just feels so fluid and a really good balance of physics and cool movement.
I was surprised to see that we share the same #1 pick, which is among my top 3-5 games of all time.
Yes! Your top two is literally my childhood! The SNES had some of the greatest games of all time!
I still remember beating the Squaks section of Animal Antics at my friend's house for the first time after dozens of deaths. My friend (who was much better at the game but had given up trying to beat it) was shocked out of his mind! Nervously, I gave him the controller to beat the next section, which he did :)
