My uncle has a golf 2.0tdi and he had a similar issue. Even when he changed the thermostat the car still wouldn't heat up properly. The dsg / s tronic cars have a secondary thermostat on the gearbox near the gearbox oil cooler. The VW dealership didn't even know about this. After we changed this it was completely fine. Just thought I would put that out there if it could help anyone
It would’ve been nice buddy, if you could’ve shared a few tips on on getting the job done. Disconnecting hard fuel lines you needed to prime system of fuel.
Good job. Only thing is you could have primed her a couple of times to get the fuel up as you took off the fuel lines they would need primed😅 that's why she took a second to start 👍 good job
Ok, so I've just changed my thermostat on Audi TT 2.0 diesel (CFGB engine) and is the exact same job as this. So.... I've spent a long time working in automotive and now actually work in aviation engineering and I'll say this is a shockingly bad job to do😂 I see a lot of people asking "how do you get the bottom bolt on the thermostat out?" Well, it requires a lot of patience and as small and shallow a 10mm socket on a 1/4 inch extension with a wobbly elbow and even then it's hellish, but removing is just the start of the fun you'll also have to get that beauty back in which is incredibly difficult as you run short on space even more so than removing 👌🏻. I ended up with a ring spanner that I fabricated an approximate 45 degree bend into and edged it back on about 10 degrees per turn until I ran out space so yeah it took a long time. Also, the dipstick is positioned just perfectly to absolutely cause you untold problems throughout again great 👌🏻😂 Pro tip, take the hoses off before you undo the thermostat bolts so when you need to pull on them to remove the thermostat doesn't wobble all about the place. Once you're in a position to take the old one out (you won't be quick getting to this point😂) take your time as this is where I think most people will naff their plastic dipstick. It comes out with a bit of rotating and puzzle solving fine without breaking so just be careful here. The coolant hose clamps are twats so yeah definitely recommend coolant hose pliers at least. Being honest (which unfortunately the lad hosting this video hasn't really been) this isn't a DIY on a Sunday afternoon job, it's a day at least if you've got tools and have a half idea what you're doing... If not take it to the garage I promise you'll regret it otherwise 😅. I didn't need to take inlet manifold off either, this is unnecessary unless you want to remove to clean etc. Finally... Good luck because you'll need it 😆
Helpful video! Would the car not hitting temperature contribute to DPF light coming on? I've had my throttle body changed and a coolant flush but the car just won't hit temperature at all, think thermostat will be next to get replaced.
That's the issue I'm having I believe, I'm having real dpf problems. If the car isn't hitting temperature, it won't regen properly and the dpf will keep getting blocked
Great vid, I have a similar problem now with my 2012 Leon mk2 2.0 tdi Car heats up to 90, without the heating on. If put the heating on the temp drops ...
Just to say unhelpfully you can take the thermostat out without undoing anything on a 1.6 Petrol. You can’t get up hills but you can take out the thermostat in 5 minutes.
My car gets to about 80 degrees, then drops to about 60 degrees while driving! I really don't fancy ripping half the engine bay out to see if it's the thermostat!
@@ff_van_petrol Hi mate my car is audi a3 2011 2.0 diesel automatic i have same problem thermostat has been changed but still nothing fixed do you thing i need to change gearbox thermostat? And do you have any advice?
hi, i need the oem number of the engine cover, can you give it to me? thanks, i can't find it, my car doesn't have, it's a audi a3 8p sportback 2008 2.0 tdi 140cv 8 valves. thanks so much!!
You should also see an increase in mpg. My SEAT 2.0tdi would get 70mpg on a 2 hour drive at 50/60mph roads. But for years could get no higher than 60mpg. (No temp guage) 6 years later, during diagnostics for another reason, i noticed the temp wouldn't go higher than 65°c, but raise when stood still (no air passing through radiator). Fitted a new thermostat (same as this video) and what absolute C#NT it is. And broke my dipstick in process. My MPG went straight back to how it used to be 70+.
Have you got the link to where you got the thermostat. I’ve been told to get the genuine one that opens at 85c not the aftermarket ones that open at 87c, 88c, 89c. And if you got an aftermarket one have you had any issues?
Dude I wanted to buy this car, but seeing this engine bay... man that looks like hell. Just a maze of all kinds of stuff. Looks likel a nightmare to work on and that comes from a BMW owner
I got a A3 140 TDI from 2011 and had no big problems, 180000km. Did timing belt last year with my wifes sisters man, took some time but not very difficult really. Worst part was the tensioner for The belt to alternator and AC. Now I have to change termostat because sometimes temperature drop when weather is cold.
Just changed mine. It's a nightmare and not as easy as it looks in this video. There are important steps that are left out in this video. NOW you have been warned.
@@MatinMcgrotty The important steps where he loosens and tightens the 2 bolts that hold the thermostat housing on the engine. The left one is a nightmare to get to, make sure you have plenty of time when you start. It took a lot of effort (carefully with a crowbar) to make enough room for the thermostat housing to come free of the smaller pipe on the right (remember new o-ring for this, I forgot). And just one more thing, be careful not to pinch the o-ring on the new thermostat housing when you install it. On mine, it was very soft and it took several tries before I was reasonably sure it sat correctly, again because there is so little space to work with. In my case it didn't change anything that I changed the thermostat, so make sure it's actually faulty before you start. According to Audi, these cars can have a working temperature of between 70C and 90C in winter.

Top stuff mate. Love the audi content mate cause it shows me that my 2010 A3 ain't the only one with issue
Haha definitely not the only one mate! Slowly fixing her up though!
everytime i have a problem, i search it and boom there you are with the same issue, we can rely on you for buying the audi with the most issues hahaha

I ended up doing the same thing to replace the thermostat. Good choice considering the intake was filthy.
Hi mate. Do you have a video when you took out the thermostat in more details?
Nearly 1,000 subs. Smashing it!
haha honestly mate buzzing for that! first half decent milestone.. thanks for the support
I've got audi a3 in Australia , save lots money thanks for your video mate!
Enjoying the content Mati. Is there any real need to take the under tray off? Would like to do mine without taking it off?
Thanks
