  • Our first ride in a fully autonomous car on public roads in the UK. Nissan very kindly arranged this experience, I'd particularly like to that Tetsuya Iijima, who is 'not' driving the car, he had been showing this vehicle to numerous journalists before we arrived but still showed great enthusiasm.

      In the UK, the charlatan wide boys bullshit their way up the career ladder and crap on the heads of hard-working technical people who do the actual work. Also, if the technical person works well, they will not be given a promotion, because that means management and managers produce absolutely nothing.

    It blows my mind how fast these autonomous cars are getting smarter! When people were saying "we might get self driving cars in a decade" back around 2014ish, I didn't think it could happen that quick. I thought it was just too complicated! I'm looking forward to being VERY wrong.
    Also the way the car relinquishes control as soon as the driver starts to make inputs looks very elegant. Actually the whole system does really.

      Yep. The leaps and bounds made by autonomous vehicles over the last decade were primarily the product of machine learning. Any self driving system before then was a completely different approach, and not at all comparable

      It is safer, mainly because while a person driving will only pay attention to a couple of things, this is taking information from 20 or 25 different sensors and cameras and it can tell exactly where it is and what`s around it at any given moment, and act accordingly

      They are already kind of nearly on the market. The gen 2 autopilot systems on new models of Tesla's are capable of this, but they haven't enabled the feature for the owners yet, for whatever reasons.
      So i'd say that in the next 1-2 years you will start to see a very small number of people owning properly autonomous cars.
      It'll take a bit longer for it to become mainstream of course, but probably not too long.

      Yes the writing is certainly on the wall for that, Taxi Driver is not a career that I would recommend long term to anyone, I see plastering and plumbing as better trades, far less susceptible to automation whilst being relatively well paid.

    • @brh4015
      @brh4015 7 років тому +9

      Plastering, plumbing, electrical work actually most of the classic trades will be the only thing left. Maybe some niche things like industrial cleaners, divers, climbers ect.
      Everything else will be gone. I am working as a research chemist, we will be largely replaced as well. I am already mostly second guessing work of machines. As soon as the first multi purpose robots show up AI can do my job. Maybe not as efficiently time wise but then it has 24h a day, I loathe going beyond 8h and like to have the weekend off.

      Most big car companies are probably able to do stuff like that. Also Bosch provides these types of systems for automotive applications but also industry safety.
      They are just not as noisy as the Americans that call a advanced cruise control an autopilot.

    • @greenmoose_
      @greenmoose_ 7 років тому +1

      Yeah I've owned and driven high end german cars with certain levels of autopilot, but no company that I know of, specifically on UK roads (where I live, hence my interest) has come even close to what was shown in that video in a consumer, or even concept product. I don't believe that automotive makers are deliberately holding out on us because reasons. Wouldn't make sense. The sensors are not the issue, Tesla uses quite a lot of off the shelf Bosch parts in its autopilot, but its the software that runs the cars the needs developing more before it hits UK consumer products, in this facet, from what I saw in this video, Nissan is at the head of the pack.

    • @APsupportsTerrorism
      @APsupportsTerrorism 7 років тому

      Nissan has been at the forefront for awhile, second only to Tesla. They were one of the first to combine lane assist and autonomous cruise (see youtube vid of '14 Q50 Hybrid driving on Autobahn as driver gets up and moves to the back seat).
      The Nissans sold in Japan this year all include lane-keeping tech. They're targeting lane change in 2-3 years and intersections in about 5... that's production. As we can see, they've pretty much already achieved the test bed. But as he said, they need to find the best locations for the sensors "in" the car and condense to a more centralized computing system.
      For their endgame look at the IDS Concept. That's probably a future iteration of the Leaf.

      For sure not every demonstrator or prototype has these features, but any production car will yield to emergency vehicles. Add car2car communication to autonomous vehicles and in the future we have much better opportunities. From intersections which are blocked by random available autonomous cars to traffic lanes which are automatically emptied before an emergency vehicle approaches.

    I love Tesla, but the Nissan Leaf has always had my heart for some reason. The price point, and first to release is mostly the biggest factors. On another note, I wonder if the vehicle made any noise while it was behind the bus? Or was it going to just stay there until it moved. I was also hoping that the came across some construction work, just to see what would happen. Great video!

    My biggest worry: if humans won't drive anymore (no attention to driving) then how can we take over if computer decides to stop? We will lose that expertise (takes 50000-100000 miles to get and improves even after that). Future drivers will be worse than computers.

    • @DanielBurkeMakesGames
      @DanielBurkeMakesGames 7 років тому +10

      I guess the problem would be largest during the transition point, when you still need to be able to take over. Once most people can no longer drive, we would already be largely at the point where we won't need to be able to take over at all.

    • @madisjaagura

      That's exactly how it works now. You need a specific certification (a drivers license). it's a right, not a privilege.

    Very impressive. Tesla is already way ahead of Nissan (and other car makers) on hardware integration, and will be ahead on software and machine learning since its so widely deployed already on the Autopilot Hardware Version 2 Model S and X. For example the Leaf had 1000 miles of autonomous experience. Tesla is getting 1+ million miles of autonomous experience *per day* on Hardware version 2. That will accelerate exponentially when Model 3 gets deployed.

    • @jfbeam

    I own & love my 2012 LEAF. When the next gen car comes out with a 200 mile range and this autonomous mode... I'll take one. I really like how smooth it operates & how you can just take over for a bit (around the bus) and then, it just resumes on it's own. No beeping, buzzers, flashing lights, etc. Super cool.

    Very impressive. I'm so glad to see that many companies developping these technologies. This will change tranportation, increase general safety, reduce the numbers of cars per household. This is a very inspiring future.

    Amazing technology and brilliant video Robert, thank you! I'm amazed at how far ahead this demonstration is compared to Tesla auto pilot. And the standby driving demonstration was simply fantastic too. If that's included in the final product and to all autonomous vehicles then driving will be made incredibly safe compared to all manual driving.

    This is the most exciting video I've seen on UA-cam in the past few years. If it was released just a cuple days later, I would have not believed it.
    Not so long ago Scientific American ran an extensive article which argued car autonomy like that was still very far away. Seeing this makes me reconsider (maybe not so over) optimistic singularity forecasts of Kurzweil and co.

    Hi Robert , The Chap from Nissan looks so relaxed --arms folded ---sure he is use to the system and the speed is relatively low-- but the adjustment feature / or take control feature that automatically puts the car in standby is wonderful-- then returns to autonomotous mode is great--and driver seems so calm and in control.. or not in this case--GREAT VIDEO.
