when the IRON I rotate between 877's, Danner Bull Run moc toe and Thorogood. In the rod patch I wear Carolina 8" round toe wedge sole, it's a good comfortable American boot that for the price will make you a lot without spending $300 a pop so the rebar can just destroy your boot.
I started to use thick rubber bands to blouse my boots, instead of fucking them in..... Great pointer brotha, these videos are great, it's nice to see a fellow ironworker know his stuff and do things the right why and passing on the knowledge to not only apprentices but also journeyman, keep em coming Chantz👍✊🏻

Hey Brother, Checkout Red Wing 411's waterproof and the moc toe is one piece of leather, so there is no separation after burning deck. I will be checking out those vibram re-soles. Thanks
They are comfy but not to the extent that the waterproof thorogoods are. If you're use to the 877s and the waterproof thorogoods the 411s will feel really blocky and clumsy. The 411s are more like the irish setter wingshooters

best boots I ever had were VIBERGS made in Canada. they were made specifically for IW. costly but I got 12 years out of them same sole doing structural and rodbusting. sad day when they stopped making them.
Irish setter wing shooter ST great for erecting and then I wear the Irish setter round toe ashby for welding(the pull on pair). Both are waterproof and you can get both for right at 200 bucks and both are made by red wing. Best boots I’ve found.

Thorogood are pretty hard to beat, gotta wonder why we still wear the 877’s? Maybe for nostalgia? Idk if your feet get wet and you choose to wear that wet boots you are going back 100 years in footwear.

Local 10 ironworker and I'm a rodbuster. I use 10877 which is basically just the 877. I have a more narrow foot and the d width fits better than the thorogood d width. They are super uncomfortable at first but a month or so in and they mold to the foot and are bad ass. Plus a snug almost slipper like fit. Worth the money. Just my 2 cents. Kg boot guard on the toes helps with the stitching issues.

I don’t have a link unfortunately, but just google barge cement for boots and it should pop up. You can get it on amazon.There a few different brands, but the one in the red and yellow can works awesome and it’s just says “Barge Cement Rubber Glue”...🛠
You basically sand or scuff up the rubber and the boots, then coat the rubber and the boot with the cement and let it set for about 15 or 20 min. After it gets tacky you then attach the new soles to the boot. Search UA-cam “Resoling Redwing Irish Setters” at “Bear Shoe Works” They have a couple videos on how to use it...👍🏼
Nice video man!! I have thorogood 8" round toes. What advantage does the mocs have over it? Is it just looks? I was always afraid to get them cuz I thought theyd be less comfortable where the toes bend.

Round toe is better if you do a lot of welding and torching. The sparks tend to just roll of the toe. The moc toe has a tendency to catch the sparks and let it sit there especially on the stitching.

Union boot pro is a good outfit out of WI. Many of my friends go that route. I go with the old guy. US Steel gives us $180 two times a year for boots. Even if the boots are cheaper, he makes the receipt $180.

I started my apprenticeship in 05, rocking thorogoods,, the first 2 or 3 was great but for me they always broke down on the sides and my feet would look like bananas 🤣 then a journeyman told me about 877. I'm on my 6th pair, have fitting 2 to 3 resold outa the 877s, the leather insole forms right to my feet, the break in time does suck because the leather is so thick. Square knots are the best. Alot of the apprentices will fuck thier pants into thier boots and do bunny ears 🤣🤣 I'd tell them that's what muts do, it's pointless ,we tuck out pants in so they don't get hung up on the iron and square knots so loops don't hang up either. Redwing has the Irish setters in composite toe(grabbed them because we needed saftey toes for the job, I'm against steel toe very much rather have my toes crushed ✊🏻) and they suck, the sole cracked in half and it sounded like I was walking on plastics soles

You should order barge cement it’s the stuff cobblers use for resoling boots, it’s much better than shoe goo...

Tuck pants into the laces not boot and utilize the speed hook to secure the pants
