I take massive inspiration from you EC, 80hr work weeks, 6 days a week. I'm 23 and work 50-60hrs as a tradesman plumber and get beaten down come Friday. Thanks for being a part of my every day, keep up the good work. Happy new year!
To whoever reads this looking to make more money. It doesn't come from working harder, it comes from making other people work for you. (making a great team/ starting a business) Only work more if you like to work more
@@Technie87 the key is making your team believe they are hustling you when you are the one hustling them. That way they work harder for you because they want to not because they have to.
my dad wore these exact boots every day as a butcher. he's long gone, but i still remember his pair of boots sitting under the radiator in the winter, with small puddles forming around from the melt. i'm an electrician and prefer red wings, but i'll never not think of dad when i see moc toe boots.
Thanks for sharing that story. My dad wore redwings but don’t matter the brand if they work for you that’s all it matters. Nice story about your pops. I lost my dad in 2019 of a brain virus. I’m 45 now he was my hero. Thanks again for sharing.
I love my steel toe Red Wings, get a new pair every year for work. The key is to wear a different pair every day, rotating your boots, mink oil or silicone will keep them. I have pairs 15 years old and are better than groovy.
@@stevenewsam6698 thank you brother. He had Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. A form of human mad cow disease. It took him fast 6 weeks from the day we notice the first symptoms. Rapid Alzheimer’s. It was hard to see him go through it.
You are so candid, so honest, so humble, so full of great and practical information. At your age, you have the energy if a 29 year old, wow! I have been a General Contractor for fifty three years, and I love your videos, you don’t ramble, you have flawless language command, you explain things better than anybody, and you are teaching so many wonderful , useful techniques and tips , for the younger, and the older generation, you are not going to retire , and take all that awesome experience with you , you are unselfishly sharing it, and gifting it for the benefit of thousands. That is awesome!! You are a very special, great man. I thank you for me, and for all the ones that have watched your videos, but forgot to thank you.
It’s funny how boots are such a personal thing. My first boots were an old hand-me-down pair of Carolina’s my dad gave me when I seriously started in his cabinet shop. Been buying them ever since. This fella reminds me of my dad. Well-spoken, no nonsense, and to-the-point. Love the videos.
You are an old school guy and thats exactly why I love your videos. Theres also no mistaking your wisdom in any of your videos. I look forward to every one of them. Whether its felling oaks, pounding iron or discussing boots in detail, your whole demeanor expresses great wisdom. Its obvious you serve the Lord and Im so glad you and your son decided to share your life with us. Im a machinist for a major airline and a diy guy for everything around the house/farm. This is THE channel for me...
One of the stigmas of being a construction worker is that people assume we don't read or speak above a grade school level. And they're right. I'm dumb af For real though you'd be surprised how many of us are college dropouts. So we know somethings.
...or maybe a minister. He has that calming tone to his voice that gives people confidence. (Plus he's a not-too-old who guy who knows al lot of stuff and has a knack for imparting that knowledge to the rest of us!)
Working in the oilfield for 10 years here; I love my Redwings. You might consider giving the newer styles a whirl. Leather inside with kevlar outside. I have an 8" lace up style with BOA laces. 2 year warranty, but they will service them for as long as you have them. No matter the brand or style of boot, I chuck the factory foot bed and replace it with a good mold-able footbed. I think that boots are more important than any tool you can buy, because they can greatly improve or worsen your quality of life. I really like your videos. You have a lot of really good knowledge to share. Thank you and please keep it up!
I’ve seen construction workers that have had boots 10 plus years and been re-soled a few times. Their either redwings or thorogoods. I finally spent the loot on some thorogoods since they are more work intended than the red wings. So far I love them.
My dad who is 77 has always loved the Sears work boots for exactly the same reasons that you mentioned. Particularly the tread pattern that is easy to clean with just enough grip for most tasks.
Sears went downhill fast. Last time I was in a Sears there were only two employees in the store and the only thing holding inventory in the store was people's decency. I watched one guy try on a pair and walk out the door with them!! Mexican dude...
I learned the same lesson when I began in concrete. I was going through a set of Wally World Brahma boots every six months. The difference is my coworkers wore Carolina logger boots. I still bought Carolinas, but I chose #505 boots with the 8” upper and external Metatarsal guard. Their leather is THICK yet soft and pliable. The Met guard keeps concrete out of my laces. These are by far the most comfortable boot I’ve ever worn. Every few months I scrub them down and re-oil them. First set lasted me five years I’m still on the second set.
Scott, this episode really hit home with me. I have been wearing the same Carolina boot for probably 20 yrs. I also went through the Kmart boots thing till I learned. Also bought Redwings. No more. My boys wear tennis shoes to work, and we laugh at each other. I am old school like you. Great episode.
Same age as you, carpentered for 40 years, had a bad fall in 78 left me partialy paralized in right leg (couldn't us calf muscle to stand on toes). I sarted using Sears Diehards in 1984 for the support of the wedge sole and flat bottoms. They helped me balance walking wall plates. I was always on the heavy side but stayed below 225 for the better part of my 20's and 30's wore the 9" boots for the extra ankle support. With the paralysis the soles would fail on my right boot heal after about 8 mos. But I've got to agree with you. they're great boots. I wore the 6' boots later in my 40s. But the best thing I can say about them is they allowed me to continue walking walls framing papering and shingling rooves for a lot longer than I could have in any other boot or shoe. My injuries and wheight finaly caught up with me, disabled now, cant work anymore but love to watch your channel.
I've been wearing Keen hiking shoes for quite a while now and love them. Such great construction; they're waterproof/breathable, have great traction for roofing and I've never slipped once, not even on wet surfaces. I'm thinking it's time for a pair of boots, and I'm glad I caught your video! Boots sure do serve a purpose that shoes just can't handle.
100%!!!! I poured concrete for 20yrs. And without a doubt that is a great boot. All the great finishers and form setters wore those. Great video, thanks!!
Hi from the UK. You are running a really great channel and seem like you are talking " from the heart". Stick to your natural style and straight, honest talking. Thanks a lot
I did the same thing.....started as a 2 year warranty......went to 1 year...then about 3 years ago, they changed the softness of the spongy you referenced (no longer real comfortable) but yes the bottom thin layer last forever... has a metal shank in the center....great for standing on ladders or cleats....my crew wears them out as dress boots...BUT I did LOVE them....
After all of my years as a construction worker, I never found a boot that would hold up to the type of work I was doing and wear with comfort. The Redwing Mock toe was the best. They stopped making the boot about 3 years before I retired. If I had only known, I would have had those boots re-soled.
I agree with everything u said. I love my DieHards, been rocking them since 1997 for metal framing and drywall, i just bought me a all black pair off the internet. Yes I've bought other brands before like wolverine, georgia, thorogood and red wing. Drywall WILL mess up your pretty looking boots, for me personally DieHards are the only ones that can take a beating. Nice video! 💯
To each is their own. I've been wearing redwing moctoes for about 5 years now. Look good and feel comfortable. I've worn those Die Hard boots once and I got a blister on my heel. That was the last time I wore those. Might have been just a bad boot and probably wouldn't have happened on the next pair, but I didn't wanna take any chance. I'm glad they worked for you.
Hi, Ceasar I just bought DieHards and they're ripping my heals open! Blisters the size of a coin. Do Redwing Moctoes take a while to wear in? Thanks :)
YHVH Saves as far as the insole. Took me a few hours to break in. The upper leather takes a little while to break in. About a week. I buy 8in boots. Good support for my ankles. You really need to make sure when you go into the redwing store that you get the exact size you need. That's one thing that the guy that sells me my boots tells me. I've got 2 pair and all I do is have them resolved. Hope this helps. Anymore questions you have. Feel free to ask
I think most boots leave sore spots or even blisters for the break in, also everyone feet are different. Its really tough to make a boot that fits everyone perfectly so it's understandable that people like different boots.
Scott, you'll be happy to know that my wife just ordered the same boot from Sears online. It doesn't say Diehard, it says HandPoint now, but it's the boot we both love. I wore mine as a letter carrier for the last 25 years of my career. And it's the only footwear I ever wear. So, I'm thrilled to try it on and walk around the house. My wife got it on sale for $87. total.
Mark I really appreciate you posting this comment. I’ve been wary of trying the now handpoint branded boots, convincing myself it would be an inferior product. Looking forward to trying the pair I just bought thanks to your review. Thanks again.
I do railroad work. Walking in the ballast all day. I have tried many other boots, but after 15 years I only buy red wing. My foot just feels so much fresher after a days work
David marzolino Wow, I'm amazed you had time to get to know every man in every shelter in the country. What was it like? Your time might have been better spent learning to respect other people.
there aint never been even a single one person on ANY project i have ever worked that hailed from a shelter. i automatically judge a man on whats on his feet. cheap boots and he better hope he aint on my crew by mistake. poor pilgrim better get him some boots with first payroll or he most likely will find himself first on my layoff list. I'm sorry but what i do is life or death everyday, every step, for everybody on site. that big red spinning stick over their head is mine and requires a good pair of boots to be able to play with it. all the metatarsal and slip on boot kids have to move when the whistle blows.....Thorogoods coming thru!!! all bull shit aside......you are correct Mr. David Marzolino and Mr. Adam Perkins needs to realize respect is EARNED not given. i give respect to gravity, every other pilgrim is gunna earn that shit, period. leave your feelings at the gate!!! this is a business not a damn daycare facility
I've had Red Wings, Danners, and Die Hards. Die Hard actually hold up about the same. Although, black Vibrams holds up better then crepe Vibram or Goodyear.
Listening to someone from an older generation makes me really think about the future of our world. Thank you for your work, your experience and the dedication to give this experience to us through UA-cam.
this channel is amazing because unlike almost every other "manly craft skills and lifestyle" channel, you actually have such a depth of history in construction, steel fabrication and are still actually at work and giving guys advice about how to get jobs in the field not just look like awesome lumberjacks on Instagram. Speaking of poseurs, I only ever knew of redwing style boots as mid 2010's bearded hipster clothing. Had no idea they were real work boots. In the UK regulations force everyone on site to wear steel toes. Even electricians and plumbers will wear steel toes, in fact the kids in construction schools are forced to wear steel toes, hard hats and hi Viz just to do their classes in carpentry , electrics etc..
I really like my Georgia Giants. Going onto my 4th year. Its actually hilarious thought because while I was being a helper for my buddy on RR maintenance I had THESE EXACT BOOTS.... They're truly a bargan and for the time they lasted what I expected them to last. I've walked, treaded, waded through mud and even the sharpest and hottest gravel. These boots are worth it if you could still buy them...
This Man's videos are a joy to watch. Love that he shares my thirst for knowledge in all trade fields. Incredibly intelligent but most importantly a Christian family man. Hope you never stop making videos.
There is something about a moc toe boot that just says"work boot" to me. My dad wears them and as do I as a framing carpenter. The redwings are expensive but they last. The soles on mine are very sticky up on roof sheeting as well
This video saved my Expensive Boots. I had these in the closet for ten years, tried wearing them on and off for a couple weeks at at a time but could never break them in, as they were stiff, unlike the same boot when you bought it in the 80's. After your video, and not wanting to keep ruining my Redwings or Ariat's for painting or sewer work, I thought I would try to save them. I coated them (paint brush and oil) with Pure Neatsfoot Oil making them almost as soft as my deerskin electrical gloves, then ripped out the insole (involved a bit of hand sanding to remove the glue) and installed my favorite Ariat Insoles (Time invested, less than 30 min total) Now they are as comfortable as any of my boots that run up to $600, don't hurt my feet (#290 and hard on my feet), will not mark a floor (very important when you are retired but still running service for your hot tempered Italian Wife in your own home). With Sears now out of business for all practical purposes these will get replaced with Deluth Thorogood 6" Soft Toe Moc-Toe (traditional carpenter style boots). Made in the U.S. sizes that actually fit your U.S. made foot, and removable insoles so you can get the fit you need, or replace when worn out. (Insoles wear faster than your soles)
Wore these boots when I was ironworking. I loved them. Also the heal can't hang on something since it doesn't have one. Which is important when you're walking iron. Great boot and great price.
I've had a single pair of Red Wings for over 15 years. Re-soled about 6 times, the inner soles re-done once too. To be fair, while I am not in construction, I do me share of construction/demo work, but I'm not a pro. But, they are my primarily motorcycle boot over that time frame covering around 130-140K miles on three different bikes. I live on Long Island and pretty much ride daily from St. Patrick's Day top Thanksgiving, and every other opportunity elsewise. They are absolutely the best boots available. At this point the look like they've been rode hard and put up wet way too often but they are still solid. And, although the resoling cost would have been comparable to the buying a Craftsman grade boot the fact remains that these bots are SOOOOO frigginn comfortable that staying with them was the way to go. They're certainly boots and provide the requisite protection, .. but they wear like skippers. They will be resoled again this winter!!
I bought some Canadian made boots and got 5 years of daily use out of them. At this point, they unfortunately got soaked in salt water for an extended period of time. Had I been able to find a good cobbler, I would have had them fixed but I ended up buying a set of Red Wings that disintegrated in less than a year of moderate use - junk.
My Redwing 2212's are going on 2 years. The last year went 2 years. 3 on the ones before that. Before that I would eat WalMart, KMart, etc. boots every 3 months. Not to mention the knee and hip pain. However, I am a heavy diesel mechanic. Also a field mechanic. Different than construction no doubt. Thank you sir for your frank review and advise!
I'll have to try a pair of those. Wolverine has been my go to work boot. I bought the one's I am wearing right now nearly 10 years ago and they are still holding up. Have been used daily in shop and outdoors. Soles are intact, no tears in leather, and laces have only been replaced once. Best $80 I have spent on a boot.
When I saw the title to your video I thought to myself for me it's Sears Diehard Boots.. . Althoygh, I'm not in the trades any longer in the 90s they were my boots of choice. Great boots not only for the price, but for the function. Hearing the brand again brought me back to the days of swinging a hart framing hammer weeding leather bags and working along side of some of the best guys I've ever worked with. Thanks, for the video and the memories.
I took your advice, three months later I found myself paying $185 for the 402 redwing boots. the Sears sole came completely off while the redwing 202's lasted four years before I wore a hole in one toe because I developed a tendency to drag my toe while putting down flooring and sub flooring. the only time your advice has failed me however. I went from doing highway construction to building houses to be close to home and when I discovered your channel it was a God send!
I had the good fortune to work in an outdoor store for a time and we had a good selection of boots so I spent a lot of time with them. I came to love Danner carpenter boots for a safety toe and their lookout side zip boots. Boots and gloves are too underrated for how well they can improve your workday.
Mink oil when new and a few weeks after broken in. That will make The difference in service life. I then mink oil my boots about once a year after that.
Enjoy your videos, advice, and passion. When I worked in the Electric Utilities, I owned Redwings. They held up well and had a hard feel inside but I liked them. I am taking your advice and giving them a try...you have the used boots to prove your point. There is a Mall across the street that still has an open Sears. I went by tonight and tried them on. Not bad and more comfortable than my Redwings. This exact same boot you recommend lists for $105. They are currently on sale for $51. All leather....$51. They still had 8 pair of size 12 in stock. They offer them on their website for the same price and include free shipping! I will give my opinion after a couple of months use. Thanks for the heads-up. Love your videos. In am looking at getting into blacksmithing thanks to you too.
What caught my eye was the Johnson paste wax on top of the orange file cabinet in the background. Old school functionality, kind of like "Frank's RedHot Sauce"; you can put that shirt on everything! I wax my circular saw blades, table saw top, work bench, joiner top, hand planes, hand saws, the list goes on and on, and a can lasts for ever. . . @Essential Craftsman thanks for the meticulous attention to detail in your videos.
I spent 10 years doing environmental monitoring at landfills across the Southeast US. I would regularly walk 8-12 miles around some of the shittiest terrain you can imagine. A quality boot is an absolute must. I’d also take care of my boots, saying you don’t have time is pure BS. Good boots are as important as the tools you use. I take care of both. Cheers.
Wolverine durashock slip ons. Been welding 50 hours a week in mine for 3 years and still going strong. Will never own a different boot unless im forced to
Man! I had a pair of Wolverine durashock steel toes 20 years ago and I LOVED those boots. Walked on concrete all day with no problems. They were so comfortable I moved furniture a couple times in them. I checked some out the other day and they didn't seem to be the same. Actually they felt very uncomfortable.
If you are serious construction worker money will never be a issue buying Great boots if you don’t alcohol drugs and nicotine like myself. Thorogoods and Redwings or nothing. I concrete all year around and I get 3 years out of them boots I mentioned if they are cared the right way. Also having multiple pair of boots just for work helps a lot, haven’t bought a pair of boots since 2017 and I don’t think I would need another pair for another 2 more years haha.
One of the first real jobs I had was at a full service gasoline station. Boots would fall apart, especially the crepe souls. Finally found that Mason shoes had one for that environment thast would last. I'M sure that's much different from construction. Went to work at a zinc refinery and got sold on Wolverine Dura-Shock boots. Such a foot saver! After 23 years of that, I retired and retuned to teaching. Kept my daily footwear to Wol erines. Don't remember if I ever had Die Hards. The trick is finding a Sears store any more. Really enjoy your channel. It's top notch!
Scott, I've worn this style of Sears Diehard work shoes for 40 years on jobsites. They LAST! They hold up really well and don't tire your feet at the end of the day. And the warranty is second to none!
I’ve had a pair of thorogoods for a year and there still running. I been doing anything and everything in construction. I would never wear another boot!!!
Just spend the money on union-made Made in the USA Redwings or Thorogoods. The Irish Setters are contract-made in China for Red Wing, so one factory might make fantastic quality and another factory might make garbage.
I'm going to try these boots. I'm a heavy duty mechanic and have been killing Red Wings every 2-3 months on and off for the last 15 years. Thanks for the great video
Hey thanks for the advice, you probably dont have any idea how hard it was to found a pair in Mexico, but after a long time i found someone who bought a few new pairs and bring them in the country and I love my Die Hard boots !!, again thanks for the advice.
I have been a carpenter for over 44 years. As a framer, my choice were Redwing six inch Irish Setters. The uppers lasted forever and got them re-soled every year and a half or so. Then I went to Redwing Chukkas and they served quite well. As I aged and did mostly finish work, I tried a pair of Diehard Oxfords. They were nice and comfortable. Then in less than a year, the sole disintegrated! Not worn down, but fell apart in pieces!!. Returned to the Chukkas and never looked back.
40 years ago, these boots were made by RED WING, for Sears. Then red wings jumped way up in price and Sears started making these in Korea. I've worn these for over 40 years. I've had some others that were good. This style is my favorite. I now have a pair of thorogoods that are basically the same thing.
It's the easiest thing in the world to just spout "Buy the best, spend the most, buy once cry once, invest in the best" rhetoric that many advice-givers go on about. It doesn't make those people wrong, but, it does make their advice less useful because they have a gimmick and an ego to the simplicity in the way they make decisions. It's nice to see that you don't insist on the nicest money can buy. In this case you settle for a middle of the road product that's not the best, but does the job and has respectable value for a consumable product. It's not style, it's not bragging rights that you always pick the best and everyone who doesn't is an amateur... it's just cold, humble practicality. Sets you aside from those who's identity are too wrapped up in how they want people to perceive them.
Scott, true crepe rubber is rubber in the bale,as delivered to the factory floor. That is to say,no sulfur,no vulcanising, has lots of positive properties but temperature sensitive. Hard cold, goo hot. No doubt over the many decades various additives or chemicals are incorporated into the modern product, but that was the original idea. Does not age particularly well. Needless to say the usage has spread out,but an Englishman and former para who had run a rubber plantation in Malaysia spoke with me many times, back in the late seventies. He described the sap to bale process in detail. It was fascinating. Still remember some of his stories. He was quite a guy. If he was certain as to what crepe was, well he knew more than I did.
Ha, I was just talking with a coworker about his boots and he has those exact ones but in steel toe, which is a requirement by my employer. His are also holding up a lot better than my US made Red Wings. . . Fun fact that you probably know and probably isn't entirely accurate but I was raised by an old iron worker and he always said that those kind of soles were special made for iron workers so that the heel doesn't get caught on a beam and get you killed.
Hello good Sir, currently in school for residential construction, my father has worked in asphalt paving industry for over 35 as well as I for 17 years, this is the boot of choice for asphalt it won't melt like the others some heat resistan but you have to treat it with diesel also non marking every one wears those boots
Duane Starmer “Craftsman” is a brand. It was the most valuable asset of Sears. As part of the deal, the brand was sold to Stanley when Sears went into bankruptcy. As part of other deals, different manufacturers are making products under the brand name of “Craftsman” for different vendors who then sell these products at Lowes. In other word, “Craftsman” is now a paid service, just like prostitution. You pay to get some fun out of her for a while. But she’s not your lady. There’s is no “comeback”. It never will.
Ive been wearing Thorogoods for 15 yrs.. they feel like tennishoes. I wear 14 double E's and weigh 300 pounds.. im hard on them and I have pairs that have easily lasted me 5 yrs... Buy thorogoods..
I wore Georgia's for like 15 years. Then I switched to Thorogoods. What an awesome change. Way better built. They last longer & they are made in the USA.
For me, I have a pair of Carhart's for work, they're waterproof, comfortable and last forever. I've found something great for laces that you buy on a roll from Fleet n Farm made by Atwood Rope Mfg. You cut them to size and burn the ends to keep from fraying and I have been doing that for my boots for almost twenty years and have never ever had to replace those laces on any of my boots. It wears better than shoelaces or paracord.
Just bought some off ebay. Gonna try them out. Im an hvac installer and i love my thorogoods. So much to the point that i dont like to use them! They are beautifully crafted i take pride in keeping them nice. Im looking forward to having a boot that I can really lay into without having to worry about ruining it. Update: so far very comfortable. Lots of cushion. Durable.
on father's day you can purchase those puppies for 1/2 price. if you will find Thorogood boots, made in America, put a pair of their wedge sole boots (moc or round toe, steel or composite, with or without) and you sir will never put that junk on your feet again. i am an Iron Worker and my boots are my life. Thorogoods are the only boot made. just put them on your feet and you will be finding me to thank me. Iron Laces have a 250 lb tensile strength and resist heat and flame up to 900 deg. granted i started my career in die hards, would wear nothing else for years. thorogood is millions of miles different. they last me on average 2 years of 6-7 10-12 hr days and are not busted when i retire a pair. no painful break in period like the CHINESE DIE HARDS have. no 3 pair of sox, soaking in water and walking them dry, nooooo sir! even a tender toed sissy will not even grumble about "these damn boots!!!" i promise they are the best boot made. tough as Red Wings but 4 pounds lighter and $100 dollars cheaper. a new pair non steel toe will run around $120-150 depending on where you buy them.
Josh Casey whats funny I recently only started wearing Thorogood the last two years because and Ironworker told me about them and I've NEVER found a better American made boot thats straight comfortable out of the box (except Danner, but only assembled in the US) and almost zero break in time. Love my Thorogoods and won't buy anything else.
wentaGT You guys are wearing your Thorogoods a lot more than I am and I agree you can't beat 'em for wear, comfort and price. I have a new dilemma on a new pair of week end cowboy boots. I'm thinking calfskin and hopefully American made (Mexicois OK). It's down to Nocona @ $250 Imperials and Lucches
yessir, us guys up top get poked fun at for the way we tie our shoes, as if my feelings were ever remotely bruised from it. there is a reason for tucking our pants in the tops of our boots, wearing wedge soles, laces knotted on the back, hanging a shackle.........not so much. thats just what the "cool kids" do if you wanna be one of those guys? our feet are the most important tool we have. if a man wanted to find the best boot made? look up top and see what is on their feet. i make issue of purchasing American made products where possible. my boots fly the red white and blue and are a damn well made, comfortable, and reliable boot. i suggest to one and all to look inside the tongue of their boots and if it says anything other than USA put them in the trash; Die Hard's included
I bought this same boots lightly used at a thrift store for twenty bucks. I have worn them for two years now doing construction and yeah they are super worn but still have their sturdiness. Worth the buy
What a great, great video! Sears SHOULD be paying you and plenty, because I don’t even need new boots, never even heard of this Sears DH brand, but boy I want a pair now and intend to search into these… Awesome and informative!!!!
Wow, Waffle Stomper! Haven't heard that ine in a long time! My all around boot of choice is the Danner Quarry. About $200 per pair. Bonus, Danner just moved production of them back to the U.S.
Excel4wd , No I haven't. I'm not a fsn of the wedge soles. I prefer a difined heel. Plus as a welder/fabricator I've not found the softer soles like they have to last. I'm a diehard Vibram waffle sole guy.
Hardwood Hollow Skills Channel my dad has had the same pair of Danners for more than a decade (also quarrys). I have a pair of Danners and they will probably last my entire life with how little rough work I do with them. Its hard to beat their boots.
Any boot I've had with hooks instead of eyes has been a nightmare. They get get caught on shit when lifting yourself up, especially scaffold. They will break off or close in on themselves so you can't get get the lace hooked. Eyes are the way to go.
My Redwings have hooks halfway and I love lacing the tops stereo, right and left string end simultaneously. I had some AirForce issue Black boots with hooks too. Like Josh says below pants make them work friendly. Cheers. Enjoyed the video. Seems like I saw some Sears Boots with hooks, will have to look again. Seems like also they have The smooth toe version of the moc-toe.
Bruce Dickey, I knot the ends of mine after they're laced up then just untie them and unhook the loops to take them off. It only takes a few seconds to rehook the loops when tying the boots. The laces have taken a set to where they stay beside the hooks.
Let's see, a hook, and a loop..... Hugh Brackett, I think you just re-invented Velcro for Boot Laces..... great idea my good man. I use 36 inch leather boot laces to hang all my acoustic Guitars on the wall. Grab one cut it in half makes it 18 inches, tie a granny knot tying the two loose ends together, makes a loop. Use a bi-fold door wooden knob drilled through and hole camfered for a nice long skinny brass screw for looks. Studs are 16 inches apart, guitars are mostly less than 16 wide, looks nice, keeps the guitars out and safely accessible. Cheers to all you essential craftsmen.
@@sparkola yes sir they are sold out they told me that Sears is closing some stores by February 2020 but the store in Pasadena Ca & Rancho Cucamonga Ca still open🥴
Been wearing the 6" steel toe DHs exclusively for right about twenty five years, daily industrial/civil concrete work, I've paid as little as $35 for them roughly ten years ago, $65 ea for my last two pairs (online black Friday)...7 days/wk.
Carolina Cody 6” lace ups. Steel shank for support, fit close but not too snug. Soft toe, waterproof (not resistant). Ankle and arch support and they aren’t a pair you are trying to get off of your feet time you walk in from work. Great boots for $90 to $100. Comfortable as tennis shoes and not heavy.
Red wings are the 🐐 of work boots. Nothing better. And they make so many different kinds. Yeah you can get a pair of cheapos for 1/4of the price but the redwings will last at least 5x as long so redwings are cheaper in the end.
Ian Shoults Redwings aren’t near the boots they were 20 years ago. Recently bought a pair they lasted about 5 months soles started wearing out in about 6 weeks. Bought a hard sole they lasted about 7 months for boots that cost over 300 bucks they should last over a year
I had a pair of diehards once I mean they're okay but my feet did hurt at the end of the day so I did some research and got some Thorogood boots those are the best for me and haven't bought any other brand of boots since
Same here, first time I got into Diehards '93 when I started working on overhead cranes, oil refineries, power generation plants, aerospace. Welding/electrical, manlift climbing around way on top of these cranes everyday, I agree killer comfort first time, I remember the first day, just heaven, luv them boots
Previously used Red Wing. Several pairs always split at the heel. Switched to Keen 5 years ago won’t go back. About $200 per pair but they are the longest lasting I’ve had and they are comfortable. You can also buy Keen replacement insoles available in flat, arched, and a thicker version.
Those are fake work boots for inner city kids. You can literally fold the sole like a sandal. The whole idea behind work boots is tough soles that won't kill your feet on ladder rungs.
Maybe it's just preference. But I gave thorogoods a try twice. I bought a pair of wide width in wedge sole and they killed my feet because they weren't wide enough. So my local shoe salesman told me about the thorogood with emperor toe. Which is more room in the toes. Once again I bought thorogoods and they killed my feet!!!! I'll just stick to the USA made Carolinas they're wide enough and comfortable for my size 14 triple e Sasquatch feet lol
ive worn everything from redwings to timberland pro to ariat work boots. im in love with the keen wedge soles. waterproof. steel toe. like walking on a cloud right out of the box.

my dad wore these exact boots every day as a butcher. he's long gone, but i still remember his pair of boots sitting under the radiator in the winter, with small puddles forming around from the melt. i'm an electrician and prefer red wings, but i'll never not think of dad when i see moc toe boots.
I have pairs 15 years old and are better than groovy.
red wing has definitely gone down in quality. been wearing them for 15 years and i moved to wolverine. much better.

This man could do a video on paint drying and I would be captivated! Thank you sir for sharing knowledge won over years of experience!
I wore Brahmas till I was 20, since then I wore nothing but Carolina's. I love them. Boy do they last.
That was a really inspirational story man, really shows the human spirit and determination to overcome life's challenges.

Brakes are overrated, after all "No brakes never stopped anyone before."
Too bad Sears is gone. I would have loved to get a pair of these boots. Thank you for the video.
Actually they sell them on Amazon!
Thanks!
Great, I'm looking forward to trying them out.
God bless, Ceasar.
YHVH Saves no problem. Glad I could help
Thanks again.

this channel is amazing because unlike almost every other "manly craft skills and lifestyle" channel, you actually have such a depth of history in construction, steel fabrication and are still actually at work and giving guys advice about how to get jobs in the field not just look like awesome lumberjacks on Instagram.
I fell bad that Sears is struggling. It's such a great store with great history and products
Bad management. As usual
I remember the die hard moc toes , those were awesome 10+ years ago , now they are junk , would last me about 3 years would always get 2 pairs
I tried a pair when I fist started Ironwork. Never bought another pair worst boot I ever had
I’ve had those a couple times , Sears always had them on sale. Super stiff in the beginning but durable
Too bad that SEARS went bankrupt. No SEARS in my area anymore.
Can still order them online. Sears will even email you when they go on sale for like $45/pair.
Here in cali as well all sears are gone.
Look at the Wolverines... $120 or less gets you a good boot.
Buy them online through Sears
MrPESensation I can’t find any anymore, not even online sucks to suck. Good boot
Looks like a great value! I love Thorogood boots. Quite a bit cheaper than Red Wings and just as well made (or so it seems).

I then mink oil my boots about once a year after that.
got 2 pair usa made Redwings going on 16 years... bring them into Redwing 2 to 3 times a year for free oiling and laces...
Going on 6 years with my red wings.
140 $
Had them resoled so I would think I'll get at least another 4/ 5.
Money well spent.
Do you HAVE to take care of them with treatments and stuff? I am too lazy to. Especially after working long ass hours.

Just spend the money on union-made Made in the USA Redwings or Thorogoods. The Irish Setters are contract-made in China for Red Wing, so one factory might make fantastic quality and another factory might make garbage.

Interesting. I've had a few pairs of thorogoods. Love them. Redwings to but those are my nice boots
The most reasonable comment of all.
you don't work in the trades
Unfortunately they don't come in a size 14. I'm enjoying my Redwing Irish Settlers as a general work boot, but a steeltoe would be nice.
This man saves you money, teaches you how to make more and gives you a education that is priceless
Wore them for years and years doing ironwork!! Boots are awesome!!
Depends on the Trade my friend.

Hello good Sir, currently in school for residential construction, my father has worked in asphalt paving industry for over 35 as well as I for 17 years, this is the boot of choice for asphalt it won't melt like the others some heat resistan but you have to treat it with diesel also non marking every one wears those boots
You know why Sears went out of business? It was those craftsman socket sets , Everytime you close the lid, all the sockets fall out.
Jason Evens, that is soo true i have that same problem totally irritating. Even the quality of their ratchets suck now.
But craftsman just took over where kobalt just fell off, at Lowe's.
@@bullsh3176 , no shit ? Craftsman making a come back ? Wow ! Never would gave guessed it .
Lol
Duane Starmer “Craftsman” is a brand. It was the most valuable asset of Sears. As part of the deal, the brand was sold to Stanley when Sears went into bankruptcy. As part of other deals, different manufacturers are making products under the brand name of “Craftsman” for different vendors who then sell these products at Lowes. In other word, “Craftsman” is now a paid service, just like prostitution. You pay to get some fun out of her for a while. But she’s not your lady.
There’s is no “comeback”. It never will.
The real question is why do you keep 5 pairs of old boot?
Because
Because ya foot don’t grow
for decoration/conversation pieces
Pepper Gipper
because they still work
I’d do the same.
They are like working on a cloud
WOW. I'll have to investigate.
I threw mine out redwing or danner
I wear those vinyl brown loafers with a little buckle on the side, they squeek when I walk but great in the shop
Durable.
Advice you can't beat from someone who has been through it, it's like you're getting a free 20 year review 👍🏻
on father's day you can purchase those puppies for 1/2 price. if you will find Thorogood boots, made in America, put a pair of their wedge sole boots (moc or round toe, steel or composite, with or without) and you sir will never put that junk on your feet again. i am an Iron Worker and my boots are my life.
Josh Casey I'm totally with you on Thorogood boots. I liked the 6" boot so well that I bought a pair of oxfords for casual wear.
Sorry Nocona Imperial @$250 and Lucchese @ $350.
yessir, us guys up top get poked fun at for the way we tie our shoes, as if my feelings were ever remotely bruised from it. there is a reason for tucking our pants in the tops of our boots, wearing wedge soles, laces knotted on the back, hanging a shackle.........not so much. thats just what the "cool kids" do if you wanna be one of those guys? our feet are the most important tool we have. if a man wanted to find the best boot made? look up top and see what is on their feet. i make issue of purchasing American made products where possible. my boots fly the red white and blue and are a damn well made, comfortable, and reliable boot. i suggest to one and all to look inside the tongue of their boots and if it says anything other than USA put them in the trash; Die Hard's included
It’s to bad that the boots lasted longer than the store. I loved sears tools the craftsman brand is a legend.
Lowe’s continues the Craftsman brand
HugeBlueGrizzly but it’s not the craftsman that it used to be
@@HugeBlueGrizzly Craftsman is now owned by Black&Decker / Stanley, and that's not good.
I like craftsman and red wings are good
I bought this same boots lightly used at a thrift store for twenty bucks. I have worn them for two years now doing construction and yeah they are super worn but still have their sturdiness. Worth the buy
What a great, great video!
Sears SHOULD be paying you and plenty, because I don’t even need new boots, never even heard of this Sears DH brand, but boy I want a pair now and intend to search into these…
Awesome and informative!!!!
Wow, Waffle Stomper! Haven't heard that ine in a long time! My all around boot of choice is the Danner Quarry. About $200 per pair. Bonus, Danner just moved production of them back to the U.S.
Hardwood Hollow Skills Channel have you tried the Danner Bullrun
Excel4wd , No I haven't. I'm not a fsn of the wedge soles. I prefer a difined heel. Plus as a welder/fabricator I've not found the softer soles like they have to last. I'm a diehard Vibram waffle sole guy.
Hardwood Hollow Skills Channel Bullrun discontinued that style vibram sole like the quarry but if you shop around you'll find em'
Hooks make it so you can get your boot off easier.
John never had mine get caught on anything. Pants prevent that
My Redwings have hooks halfway and I love lacing the tops stereo, right and left string end simultaneously.
Black Friday $49.99
I just bought 2 pairs
Awesome boots
ulyssesgood I bought 3 more to add to the 5 I have stocked up on earlier this year. It appears they have completely sold out Lucky us!!!!!!
@@sparkola yes sir they are sold out they told me that Sears is closing some stores by February 2020 but the store in Pasadena Ca & Rancho Cucamonga Ca still open🥴
ulyssesgood do they still have any I’m from Long Beach I cannot find any at all, not even online
AVO try again now
Been wearing the 6" steel toe DHs exclusively for right about twenty five years, daily industrial/civil concrete work, I've paid as little as $35 for them roughly ten years ago, $65 ea for my last two pairs (online black Friday)...7 days/wk.
Red wings suckk
Only pair of redwings I've owned were worn and beat in 5 months. Probably the worst boots I've ever owned.
I would only get redwings but when i got Wolverines im never goomg back
Ian Shoults Redwings aren’t near the boots they were 20 years ago. Recently bought a pair they lasted about 5 months soles started wearing out in about 6 weeks. Bought a hard sole they lasted about 7 months for boots that cost over 300 bucks they should last over a year
I had a pair of diehards once I mean they're okay but my feet did hurt at the end of the day so I did some research and got some Thorogood boots those are the best for me and haven't bought any other brand of boots since
Do you know who the manufacturer is for these boots? Sucks sears is going outa business and these boots aren’t available anymore.
Classic Yellow Timberland boots have been my go to for the past 10 years.
Expensive..and i ruined mine last winter near the fireplace when i left em to dry out
Those are fake work boots for inner city kids. You can literally fold the sole like a sandal. The whole idea behind work boots is tough soles that won't kill your feet on ladder rungs.
If you ain't talkin' Thorogood, you ain't talkin' truth.
My man! Finally someone with some sense in this comment section.
Hell yeah! Made in USA!
@@Blue_Collar_Hunter assembled in USA....
Facts💯
Maybe it's just preference. But I gave thorogoods a try twice. I bought a pair of wide width in wedge sole and they killed my feet because they weren't wide enough. So my local shoe salesman told me about the thorogood with emperor toe. Which is more room in the toes. Once again I bought thorogoods and they killed my feet!!!! I'll just stick to the USA made Carolinas they're wide enough and comfortable for my size 14 triple e Sasquatch feet lol
I gave away the only pair of "Sears" boots that I ever bought. I wore them one day, and they nearly crippled me.
Die hard boots were great at one time my last pair the soles came apart in a couple months very sad sears was quality back in the day..
ive worn everything from redwings to timberland pro to ariat work boots. im in love with the keen wedge soles. waterproof. steel toe. like walking on a cloud right out of the box.
Wow somehow this guys hypnotic knowledge got me to watch a 10:36 min video on boots 🤔 and now for some reason I think I am going to buy a pair.
