Why Cant My Cat Pee? The Emergency Blocked Bladder

  • Your cat might be straining to pee and you're asking why can't my cat pee? What's the matter and will it get better by itself? They may have had cystitis in the past but is this just a repeat? You might think your your cat has a bladder infection? Well a blocked bladder might be the cause and this is a true cat emergency!
    This is a serious, life-threatening condition in male cats that needs to be treated quickly to improve the chance of a successful outcome. The signs can vary from a cat who is peeing a small amount of blood through to a cat who is very painful through to one who is collapsed.
    A blocked bladder is most commonly a result of feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) which is also known as feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). This is actually most often a result of stress. Bladder infection is actually very uncommon unlike in dogs and people. Other causes might be bladder stones or sludge which cause the bladder obstruction in cats.
    A cat becomes blocked when inflammatory material in the bladder collects and forms a plug in a cats urethra. When the urethra is blocked, a cat cant pee and their urine is trapped in the bladder. It can develop very quickly and death may also be rapid if left untreated. If your cat really cant pee then you should contact your vet straight away, especially if they are male.
    Symptoms of a blocked bladder can include:
    - frequent trips to the litter tray
    - spending more time squatting without producing any urine
    - red tinged urine / blood in your cats urine
    - crying or vocalising, especially when urinating (or attempting to)
    - increased agitation and restlessness
    - licking their back end frequently
    - pain when picked up under their abdomen
    As the disease progresses, your cat may start to vomit, they may collapse, they may become comatosed and ultimately they will die.
    Treatment of a blocked bladder involves passing a urinary catheter and then home management to increase drinking and water intake as well as reducing stress. This will reduce the risk of repeat episodes of cystitis in cats.
    This is discussed in more detail in my video on cystitis in cats: • Cat Cystitis: treatmen...
    as well as how to get cats to drink more water
    and how to reduce stress in cats
    Briefly though, some of the main cystitis home prevention strategies include:
    - resource management - litter trays, water and food bowls
    - providing a 3D space
    - securing the home - this might require a microchip cat flap - amzn.to/2CgDCP1
    - anti-stress medication such as the pheromone Feliway - amzn.to/2Cu9jBj
    - changing to a wet diet or adding water to the food and feeding a special prescription urinary diet that come in wet (amzn.to/2C0X3ad) and dry forms (amzn.to/2BZ0Vsr)
    - using a cat water fountain - amzn.to/2Cu5Tyf
    - add tuna juice to the water for flavour

    Man !!! You saved my cat’s life .. I didn’t know what’s going on I thought he can’t poop then I opened your video and I realized how stupid am I he couldn’t pee for two days scratching the litter.. once I opened the video I did what you said .. ran to the vet, he put him to sleep and took the urine out mixed with blood, thank god no liver or kidney damage, he said it’s urinary stress because of dry food that is not good quality, thank you sooooo much I have no words to describe how thankful am I, if I didn’t see that video he would have died .. and for everyone keep an open eye on your cats 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    I gave pumpkin to help my cat's constipation and it worked; now he's straining to pee. There's no blood in his pee and I'm cleaning his privates (front-to-back) with a water/hydrogen peroxide mix (9 - 12 parts water : 1 part hyd.per.). Also adding 1tsp salt to every cup liquid. Definitely getting a UTI test from my pet store tomorrow.
    Thoughts?

    Hi Doc! I brought my cat home yesterday from the animal hospital for an overnight stay to check for an obstruction. They were content he hadn’t obstructed but couldn’t get enough urine for a urinalysis, so they sent us home with a container, an anti inflammatory and a muscle relaxant. I got a hair under 3ml and dropped it back off yesterday. He’s done a couple little wees overnight, but hasn’t produced anything for about 4 hours. He’s normally a very vocal and clingy cat, but he’s a bit quiet today. He’s very happy to follow me around, like usual, and isn’t having trouble sleeping. He doesn’t make a sound in the litter, but he stays there a long time and will turn around occasionally. Besides collapsing, having trouble walking and yelling, is there another way I’d be able to tell when an obstruction is forming? Our vet said if he hasn’t produced urine for 12hours to bring him in immediately, but I’m terrified there might be a quiet sign before the end of that timeframe that could save his life. Also, if he does show those signs, what’s the safest way to move him and get him there the fastest? Would picking him up be too abrupt and cause him to rupture? The vet didn’t have the prescription food, so I’ve got to wait a bit before I can start him on that. Is there anything else I can do in the meantime to try to prevent an obstruction?
    Cheers.

    • @ebony6606
      @ebony6606 4 роки тому

      Oh, he’s also been obsessed with licking his right side, just above his hind leg. Would that could as his back end?

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 роки тому

      As well as diet, increasing the amount of water he’s taking in can help prevent an obstruction. Here are some ideas for this - ua-cam.com/video/OehD3s8vIgU/v-deo.html
      Picking up is fine and not going to cause a rupture. If he’s still straining in a few hours or starts to look painful then a recheck is likely the best thing.
      I hope he’s feeling better soon

    My cat had his Catheter removed at 2pm and I brought him straight home. I gave him 1/3 cup water and he drank less than an ounce. He hasn’t urinated yet, it’s now 2am in the morning. He looks tired from gabapentin. Should I be concerned? How long should I wait before being concerned that he may be blocked again?

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 роки тому +2

      cats can take quite a long time to refill their bladder, so I wouldn't worry unless your cat is looking uncomfortable or straining without producing urine. As well as a special diet, you can also try and increase water intake to increase urine output for better bladder flushing and reduced obstruction risk. Here are some strategies to help with this - ua-cam.com/video/OehD3s8vIgU/v-deo.html

      Make sure your cat is on a 100% wet food diet. Even mix in a little extra water with it. That increases their water intake drastically compared to the dry food.

    My cat is a female maine coon. She takes a lot of trips to the litter box. Some pee comes out, but not a lot. Yesterday, she had a droplet of blood. She's an indoor cat. She doesn't cry and seems happy despite not being able to pee. This started yesterday. I've been trying to give her wet food moreso and cut back on her dry food. She hasn't even touched her water today. I'm so worried. She is fixed. (Not recently) She had crystals in the past after her surgery and I'm wondering if it's just happening again. My husband's having me wait a couple days but I'm having sky high anxiety. I give her a mixed diet of wet food and dry food so I don't understand. What should i do while I wait? I'm a mess.

    Hi. I am Very sad to say that the whole catheter procedure was done, but his body still could not react positively to start passing urine on his own. What could have been the causes doctor? I could not afford to get a second opinion and they told me that they have depleted their options after taking a x-ray and found no crystals.

      A surgery called a perineal urethrostomy is one option, another is to train the bladder with a needle and then try again (or see if another vet can clear it). Sometimes they are very tricky. Good luck, I hope your cat recovers well

    I took my cat to the vet yesterday because he has been crying and can't seem to pee. The vet said that it's UTI and they inserted the catheter in him so that he can pee. His pee is purely blood and has some solid parts as well which worries me so much. The vet also gave me some medications that my cat has to take everyday. however my cat seemed a lot more weaker and weaker. Today I took him to the vet again and they did the same thing but with anesthesia, (again with the blood and the solid things in it) but after going home my cat was not very responsive. He is breathing like he is out of breath more like short and quick heavy breaths. Whenever I try to lift his head it just falls down. He seems so weak. I don't know what to do anymore. He hasn't peed yet on his own and he doesn't eat or drink water unless I feed him from a syringe.
