If your cat is showing signs of urethral blockage, please get them to a vet as soon as possible. Complete blockage is a life-threatening emergency and requires immediate treatment.

Rub Organic raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with "the Mother" on their fur (cat's sides) or the top of their paws. They will lick it off. Use at least two tablespoons in a day or if necessary a few days in an emergency for cats. For very young cats reduce that amount to one tablespoon. For kittens use only a teaspoon. Rub the organic apple cider vinegar on each side of their fur or the top of their paws until you see them have relief. Remember to shake the bottle first. If you have a wild cat that doesn’t take orders, then douse him with a good bit in a small glass. A lot will bead of his fur. Also, they will not be able to lick off the entirety of it all at once. Organic apple cider vinegar will start to go into immediate action for the cat to get relief from the blockage. It saved my cat that was pissing blood and then could not pee while squatting all the time. Also, it helps get rid of UTI bacteria; Walmart sells it. Ideally, it is best to use organic apple cider vinegar because it tastes rather good and is much more tolerable for the cat to ingest it compared to the filtered kind which tastes horrible.
Remember only to use the organic apple cider vinegar as necessary. Too much too often could lead to an ulcer. From my experience a couple tablespoons a week has not hurt my cat. If it is a real emergency you could go beyond that just do not let it come to a habit of more than that each week. Keep in mind; you will likely have reoccurring bouts with this for a while. That is why I recommend some other preventative measures as you read on below:
Keep in mind that it is important to ensure cats, when feeling normal, get enough water to keep their system flowing. Ensure they eat wet cat food over dry for the moisture content, Consider temporarily stopping the cat from eating dry food or even permanently if necessary. Too much dry food leads to blockages with lack of hydration compared to canned cat food. Try putting some added bit of water in their wet food. Avoid salty meats if they are having this problem. Salty meats or salty canned food meats like tuna will stop up your cat for sure!
If you use clay litter make sure you use the unscented. Scented can irritate their pee track with synthetic chemicals leading to inflammation and UTI blockages. Never use clumping litter for cats; it can lead to blockages because cats can ingest it much easier. That can cause ingestion of sludge and bacteria leading to inflammation and UTI’s. Clumping litter is known to be extremely dangerous for kittens and not good for cats in general. Buy only fragrant free non-clumping litter, and then add one heaping tablespoon of baking soda mixed in per 10 pounds of cat litter that you use. It will naturally neutralize the smell; Just do not go beyond that because baking soda is really high in salt which is dangerous for cats if they ingest it more than a tiny amount by licking their paws each time using the litter box. I have used it for my cat and it works well, he actually prefers this litter combination. Baking soda is known to help aid and help get rid of UTI’s. Never give it to your cat other than in the litter! Additionally, use feline pine litter and add it to your litter with several handfuls to add a nice fragrant smell. A little goes a long way to just supplement the litter.
Also, consider buying "cranimals" from amazon. It is a cranberry extract that helps the kidneys and gets rid of UTI problems. Put 1/4 teaspoon in two small cans of wet cat food or equivalent to that with one big can. You can also wash out an old salt and peppershaker to sprinkle a decent amount in their food. Any amount more than that I have noticed they will not eat it. Putting cranimals cranberry powder in their food will help keep their pee acidic to break down crystals.
Additionally, "Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" helps assist in UTI treatment sold on Amazon. It is a "diuretic" thus helps people and animals urinate 30% more to empty the bladder to keep crystals from forming. Completely safe for cats with no limitations of consumption and has no salt in it. Cats tolerate it because it has almost no taste. Just be careful not to breathe it in by getting it dusted up in the air because it is dangerous to breathe it in. Make sure to only use "Food Grade."Use at least about 1/4 teaspoon per small can wet cat food. Lastly, I have learned of a brand called "tinkle tonic" from chewy or amazon that some claim helped their cats.
Finally, consider your cat’s stress level. Stress could be another factor that can lead to inflammation of the bladder area. Try to ensure he has enough to do to keep happy.

    What to do for prevention:
    NO DRY FOOD!
Please add some water to their wet food in summertime, and on any hot days.(to prevent (not sure why she says blockage is more prevalent in winter,I have always seen it to be in the heat of summer.)
If you can get them to drink water, possibly a fountain/running water, that would be great. Filtered water or rain water is best- but absolutely NO filtered water with added "minerals for good taste". These minerals can cause blockages.
Carbohydrate free food is best, but, again,NO DRY FOOD EVER!
In my experience, dehydration is the main cause leading to blockages.(orange male cats are also genetically inclined to blockages)
One can test for dehydration by scrunching/gently lifting the fleshy skin behind their neck, and then releasing it. It should return to place quickly. if it returns slowly, your cat is/may be dehydrated, and needs immediate attention to correct this.
in cases of longer term dehydration,(days),saline solution injected under the skin is often necessary,as they can not absorb as much fluids as they need,in time, by just the food/water they could eat. This can be done at home, your vet can show you how to do it-but many vets will most likely want to board your cat with them and charge you beaucoup bucks for doing it.
If your cat is straining, and no pee is coming out,IMMEDIATELY take them to a vet, they can save their life through-
    A. Inserting a catheter in their penis, and releasing the blocked urine.
    B. Inserting a syring into their bladder and removing urine.
    C. Giving them subcutaneous fluids with saline solution.
    D. Often after this a cat may need to stay with the vet, with a catheter inserted, for a few days.
Sometimes you can convince them you can handle this(catheter already inserted by vet in kitty, but at home care) yourself at home,as it can be very expensive for a vet stay.
D.They will probably try to tell you to feed "Hill's urinary track formula prescription food"(or similar) afterwards/during catheter care-ONLY feed them the WET version .
After a while they can return to a quality WET food,-they usually do not need to be on this(prescription diet) the rest of their life (though the subsidized vets/cat food companies will try to tell you otherwise).
Best is prevention, much better to spend some money on getting your cat a quality WET food every day, than having to spend A LOT on emergency care.(yes, unfortunately I have spent thousands of dollars getting my kitties heathy by emergency visits, before i knew these things).
Unfortunately, some cats will not know, even after a life threatening experience, that they should not be out in the heat.....so sometimes I need to keep my kitties confined in a cool place when it gets really hot.
if they are panting after being out in the heat, please get them hydrated, too.
Stress is also a cause, please have multiple litter boxes if you have multiple cats,(so they all feel comfortable releaving themselves,no stress....and feed them separately if you need to,and/or do whatever is necessary to make sure they are stress free and well fed/hydrated.
Best wishes, may your cat(s) live long and healthy, happy lives.
    Thanks so much.

I lost my cat to urinary blockage. It was horrible. I failed my little man. Brought him to see the same vet three times on this ongoing problem he had peeing. When he was at death's door, I brought him to another vet. He was IV'd, catheterized and kept overnight. He died during the night. What I learned was that I wasn't as aggressive and serious as I had to be to save his life, some vets are worthless, and never, never switch your cat over to dry cat food. Do not do it!

Knowing what I know now, if I were a vet seeing a cat prone to urinary tract distress, I would make it a point to tell the owner that dry food is totally off limits for that cat. Thanks for reading.

      Sorry for your loss.
Just lost my little buddy 2 days ago.
I thought he had a stomach virus because he was throwing up.
I never had a sick animal and I definitely didn’t think it was a urinary blockage.
I scheduled him a vet appointment for Wednesday as no other vet was accepting new patients.
He didn’t make it to his appointment.
I took him to the emergency vet at 3am only to have to make the painful decision to have him euthanized.
I had him cremated and now I’m waiting to pick up his ashes.

I’m going through this now. He was happy and himself last night, then this morning, I noticed he kept going to his litter box but nothing was coming out. I thought he was constipated but the kicker was when his food arrived (he’s crazy about food) and he didn’t even touch it, just laid there. I knew something was wrong. Took him to the ER immediately. Procedure went well, very expensive, but had to be done. Doctor said we caught it very early and it was good we brought him in when we did. No more dry food for my little guy, just wet food, lots of water, and so so so much love ❤️ thank you for sharing this.

Thank you for this video. My main vet is on post-natal leave so I had to go to another clinic to check what was wrong with my almost 12 year old boy. Last year abdominal ecography was fine, good kidney's shape and normal bladder, very thin sediments, he was kept on his renal diet because of altered SDMA.
Now he had trouble urinating and had leeks on strange places. The new vet with the new ecography determined stones, not sure if on the bladder of kidneys, this was last wednesday and they still didn't gave me the results. SDMA was suddenly normal despite being twice abnormal last year. Prescribed tamsulosin, pregabalin and veterinary meloxicam. Couldn't perform the urinary test because he peed during the eco and his bladder was empty. I had to take him today because he doesn't want to eat the urinrary diet, neither wet canned nor dry, and he pee a lot on the bed and is dizzy. Another doctor saw him at the same clinic. She told me he needs to complete treatment but with food, anything but renal so I bought him wet cans for convalescent care, he ate. He only ate his churus. The urine sample was successful but she said he might be blocked DESPITE peeing all the time, because his bladder was supposedly full and he didn't wanted to expell the urine when massaged. She shot him tramadol and an antiinflammatory, told me to come back tomorrow to check him and probably have to put him a catheter. But then she called me 30 minutes before the clinic close and told me she talked to a colleague expert on felines and that I should take my boy to a vet hospital that has urgency 24 hours because he may be blocked now despite peeing, but that she didn't know! And I had to told them to send me the tests because they have everything, yet they didn't sent me the eco results. So mad!
I call another vet I used to go for minor issues, and I'm gonna take him tomorrow with a feline expert. Unfortunately they don't hospitalise because they are small but whatever that vet tells me I'm gonna do it because she knows and I trust her. I will go wherever she sent me even if it's expensive. I didn't brought my boy there because I knew he needed an abdominal ecography and the other place could do it and most of the test, but it's more complicated in the small clinic. I'm so mad at that doctor that having my boy there didn't told me he needed the catether right away, he could have stayed hospitalised. They think calling late is enough. They are the professionals and I've paid a LOT already. I don't care if I have to be in debt, but I expect them to be professionals!
I just hope everything goes well tomorrow with my boy. He is literally my life. ❤️
    Sending good vibes to all.

Thank you so much for making this video. My cat had to go to the vet yesterday because I saw the sign of him going to the toilet so frequently, losing appetite, and losing energy. Indeed it was one of the urine infections. I'm glad I was able to notice because I knew those were the signs thanks to you. I have one request! Can you please make a video about food minerals and urine infection? I was told by the vet that food can be the cause of this including high minerals etc. I'm just wondering how I can notice. I chose food based on the All About Cat review and gave him Instinct wet food, Tiki Cat sardines wet food, Weruva kitten wet food as a rotation + Fruitable as a treat for my 9 months old cat. I only checked the calories and never the amount of minerals. Could you please make a video of food minerals sometimes?? How to calculate, how to know when it's too much or too less for your cat's weight etc. Thank you so much!!

My cat had this. He started peeing and pooping on the couch. I thought it was a behaviour problem, but since it happened repeatedly I decided to take him to the vet. Literally the day before I had planned to take him, I noticed blood and crystals in his urine. I took him immediately to the vet. They did an ultrasound (or some other imaging, I don’t remember exactly) and it seemed he had already passed the stones because they couldn’t see any. They did put in a urine catheter and gave him some medication to help eliminate any left. He was kept in the vet for a couple of days. Afterwards I had to continue to give him medication and special food and was advised to switch his food permanently.

I recently had to put my kitty to sleep. He was 2 1/2 years old and dealing with leaking at times, then blockages. He had this issue for over a year. We switched him to the Purina prescription wet cat food for Urinary Tract issues. He was hospitalized 3 or 4 times -- the last time he was in the ER for 14 days. The vet didn't put the catheter in correctly for the first time -- causing major urine scolding on his rear end. They did the catheter correctly for another 7 days. A month later, blocked again. With his issue, PU surgery was not an option. His blockages and urethra damage was too far up close to the bladder. With multiple vet opinions, the only suggestion with the last blockage was to do the same 7 day catheter to help the urethra repair again. Our primary vet was honest with us and said that this option would help him, but wasn't sure if we would ever have a permanent solution to his blockages. In total, we probably spent upwards of $15,000 with all of these issues over the year (The 14 day emergency room stay was $6,500). Money was not a factor for my wife and I -- If I knew we could actually fix him and give him a good quality life, I couldn't put a price tag on it. With a lot of discussion, we decided it was best to put him to sleep. Feeling good for a weeks or a month, then blocking again, then lengthy procedures wasn't fair for him. It's been 3 days since we put him to sleep and I can't help but feel guilt like we didn't do everything we possibly could do. I did so much deep diving in google for ANYTHING -- I read up on stents, bypasses, etc. I truly don't think there was anything else we could. It would help me feel better if you could give you opinion on if we did everything we could. Thank you!

My male cat had a severe urinary blockage 3 years ago which was nearly fatal and a second one 2 years ago that I was able to stave off because I took him to the vet as soon as I saw signs (staining to pee, licking his butt, not eating, very sluggish). I just took him to the vet today because there was blood in his urine but it is a type of cystitis this time. A big thank you for this thorough explanation. I have a brand new kitten (we brought him home yesterday), a new male 2-month old.
So far, he hasn’t eliminated at all - although I’ve heard that young kittens can eliminate less often. So far it’s been about 24 hours. He did eat a bit yesterday and he had a little drink about 10 mins ago. I’m just keeping an eye on his kitty litter for now.
I did notice him meow once when sitting in his litter, but I feel that he might be just sitting in his litter for comfort - he’s been treating it more as a place to sit than a toilet, although he was at one point pushing the litter around - no elimination though.
If I don’t see anything by tomorrow I will take him to the vet, I already called them for a checkup in any case - I’ll just put more urgency on that appointment if I don’t see any action in his litterbox.
yeah, sorry for unloading my current situation on you - I’m just venting because I worry about my cats a lot - just ignore me :)

I'm going through this with my Cat for the second time in 3 month's. He's just be unblocked again on Saturday. Sent home on MetaCam, Gabapentin, Hypervase, Amoxyclav. He's doing relatively well, although he's in and out of his tray and doing smaller pees but frequently, and has this morning peed all over my bed. Called the emergency out of hours vet and they said to take him back later today for review, but don't need to rush him in right now as he's able to urinate and it's more likely inflammation from the catheter. It's been an absolute nightmare, and very expensive but he's worth every penny. I'll do everything possible to keep my little man alive, next option is P.U. Surgery, if you can do a video on that, it would be great. ❤

Our cat who is 1 year and 9 months had a urethral blockage a couple of days ago. We noticed he was going to the litter box more often than usual and just standing in there for minutes at a time, no urine or poop. I took him outside (he’s indoor with supervised outdoor time) and he was eating a bunch of grass, so I thought he just was constipated. When he came back in he was playful with his feather and still open to eating treats. A few minutes later he threw up, mostly grass and bile. Then he kept going to the box and we called the emergency vet who told us to bring him in right away. By the time we got to the office he was already fully blocked and had to be hospitalized for 2 nights. Doctor said we brought him at a critical time and saved his life. Long story short, it was the most stressful week so far with my little fat boy. He’s home now recovering and we are still worried that he’ll obstruct again. Are there tips for recovery and reassuring this won’t happen again? He’s still not pooping and not drinking water.

I recently lost my cat to this. As I have learned, cats do not have a strong thirst drive to begin with. My thought is that his not pooping may indicate he is dehydrated. That's worrisome for cats prone to urinary issues because you want your cat to do a decent amount of peeing to keep his bladder free of sediment build up. If he is eating any dry cat food at all, I would recommend switching him to an all wet cat food diet. His system will draw water from his food and this will help him poop besides cleansing his bladder out. Keep up the good work.

My cat was having kidney issues and the vet recommended a water fountain..within 2 weeks he was drinking normally. My vet also recommended a high calorie recovery wet food. Apparently cats can't resist this food and my cat ate and ate..promoted regular pooping. Cats can get addicted to this recovery food I was told so recovery food can only be used for a short time but it certainly brought him back to normal.

My cat, kol, was blocked about 3 weeks ago now. He was in the ER for 3 days with a catheter and by the end of his stay he got spooked and riped it out. The vets said he was okay and we took him home but ever since then he has been having some issues. We took him in because we saw blood in his urine, they told us it was normal and he was slightly inflammed. They prescrided him more drugs and then with one of the drugs he began to pee on himself uncontrollably. I called multiple times and asked a millon questions about the side effects. The vet who prescribed it told me to stop the drug. I called my primary and they told me they never used it in cats before personally and recommended stopping it as well and now were currently waiting for it to clear his system to see if he will stop peeing all over himself. I kept being told as long as he is peeing he'll be okay but this procress is just so hard to watch him go through. Im scared he'll get blocked again without the drug but i dont want these episodes of peeing anymore. My only theory is that him ripping it out to early caused him to have a cut or some sort of tear inside of him that is hurting him still. He strains and has some trouble but still ends up urinating and when he has these episodes he looks like he is in pain when he does pee. I dont mind helping him through anything, i just want actual advice instead of differences in opinions by everyone who checks him out. Im not sure if anyone has advice but any would help a ton. Hes my baby, i just want to see him better and healthy again.

They hadn't put the catheter yet, I will have a second opinion tomorrow because the doctor today send him home and then called me 30 min before the clinic closed sending me somewhere else to do the procedure because a colleague of hers told her he might be blocked despite peeing on himself but that "she didn't know earlier" 🤦🏻‍♀️ of course the colleague didn't know anything else. My gorgeous boy Oreo, a tuxedo boy, went out 5 days ago for his normal toilet visit and a patrol of the area like he has done since March 2017 when he moved in from living with a fox pack and his sister Cookie found him and brought him home. He's never had anything really wrong apart from fighting and the odd rodent bite that have always been treated at the vets ASAP.
So back 5 days, within the hour he was back but the smell from his rear was horrendous, I've worked with terminal patients in nursing and even cancer and rotting flesh wasn't this bad. He did have, what I thought was poop on him, I tried my hardest to clean him but I'm physically disabled and it wasn't easy. I'm also on chemotherapy and the amount of bites and scratches I got made me really worried because of my none existent immune system. My carer came later the day after and we tried to clean him and bathe him. It's not easy because my carer is not confident with pets, having never had them before. Days went by, he's eating, drinking and playing never like before especially the eating and playing. His diet is poached cod fillets, sheba flakes in jelly and gourmet in gravy plus purina one biscuits, he and my other 16 month old female Kenzi get treats but not over the top of Lick-e-licks and felix treats.
So the smell comes and goes and just today it looks like there's something just above his anus and his anus is swollen.
We are at the vet tomorrow but I'm really scared I might lose him. What is wrong with him? Anyone please 🙏 I'm very scared.

My almost 3-year-old male cat has PKD. He pees in small balls (it used to be big balls) but he is on chronic prednisone (for his IBD and asthma...), and I read that's a side effect of the pred? Should I worry about the small pee amounts? He also has some little pee leakages (no intentional, but tiny leakages). His last urine test showed traces of protein but no crystals, but that was 4 months ago. He is on an all-wet diet, so he is good hydration-wise, but he has all the other risk factors you mentioned: an indoor cat in a multicat household who is a little fearful and anxious (pred not helping here). I was watching this because I'm worried it will become full-blown urinary blockage and I won't realize... Will be on the lookout for more signs apart from the small pee...

one of my female cats has been going through this for the past ~3 days, and i just realized this now. She is the only indoor cat we've ever had of many and now this happens to her at 6 yrs old, just unfair and so random. It's unlikely she'll survive these next 2 days, I'll update when she passes most likely😕
update: unfortunately, after only 6 hours, she passed away. Thankfully she wasn't alone in her final moments.😢

Hi! Dr. Sarah can't respond to comments at this time, but I'll step in and give my impressions. Not veterinary advice! This is a popular home remedy that hasn't been studied very well, but there's a chance that it may be able to help if your cat has struvite crystals (caused by over-alkalinity of the urine). If you're in a tight spot, a small amount mixed into the food may help, but I wouldn't recommend it as an alternative to rushing to the vet. - Mallory

I'm not sure if this is more or less concerning than trying and not peeing.

On 31march2023, 11p.m. started going to litter continually, 25times in 10min. But he didn't do urine properly, only few drops. All night he went to his litter but wasn't able to do it easily. Next morning he eat some dry cat food and drink little water.
1april2023, 4p.m, visited vet, he gave max injection cettriaxone 125mg 1/4 . Max had no fever , max bladder was empty, max weight was normal.
    Vet gave medicine: syrup cran-max 2ml (1 - 1 - 1) for 7days , syrup cetspan 100mg 2ml (1-0-1) for 4days.
4april2023 11:45p.m. he is not well. After taking medicine he is not well. He start having loose motions too.

I hope you’re still active today and could help! I just took my cat to the vet yesterday for these symptoms and he said he didn’t have blockage it was just bladder irritation from a skin infection. There wasn’t blood in the urine yesterday but today there is. They treated yesterday by injecting steroids and antibiotics. My cat (male about 6years) has been peeing on the couch and and I just noticed the blood after I put him in the bathroom and saw it on the floor. There was little pools of urine with some blood and then one pool of a bit more urine. He has been eating but not drinking, not hiding or anything. Idk what’s going on 😢

Do all cats exhibit one of these signs? Or can it happen with no signs at all? We recently lost our baby (cat 1 yr old) but the days leading to his death, we didn’t notice any of these signs. He was acting like normal, and even playing with his siblings. We went on vacation and left them with a pet sitter that dropped in twice a day. When we came back, he was already gone. 😢 Our vet says it could’ve been a sudden blockage, but I can’t stop blaming myself that maybe we just didn’t see it.
We were never informed about male cats being at risk for this until it actually happened to us. So, I’m wondering, what other things are indoor cats (both male & female) at risk for?

Hi there. Dr. Sarah can't respond to comments at this time, and I'm not a vet, but I would say that peeing only a few drops at a time is definitely a problem. I know it's expensive, but you do need to treat the blockage first and then start thinking about prevention. Is your cat getting enough moisture in his diet? This is probably the easiest and best first step to keeping this from happening again. Desperate parent (needing help) , ten days ago I notice that my cat(female , 11 years old spayed ) has discomfort and her vagina is wet and she can't take a piss . I jumped to take her to the vet , but she was afraid of the box , and fight like a wild cat against me getting her to vet and even she cut some of her nails , no matter how hard we try we could not get her , I was desperate . I took the matter into my own hand and when I see there is a day that there is no sonography , I began to give her coamoxyclav ( for its taste and being in pill shape and has clave preventing bacteria from getting resisted to the drug ) . after 10 hours her situation get better and at least she could relieve herself in two or three trial , and after 24 hours , she could pee normally again but she prevent eating until the third day , and I still can't get her she fight to death not to go to the box.
all her UTI symptoms gone after two days and she seems well and normal , but I am not relieved , I got to check her knowing what was the problem for sure , and be able to get her to vet ,, she has a bad encounter to the vet when she was 1 year old , but she never get wild , ( even because I took her at 4 months of age as a Farrell cat ) she always afraid of other people . and only trusts me ,, if I took her out she don't want to go , but at the same time she won't come back, and took me for 13 days under the tree , until I gave up and frowned upon her and stop speaking the way I normally speaks to her , and then in less than 1 hour she jumped into her cage and beg me to take her to the home and didn't move 1cm away from me for a week . I think her biggest fear is to lose me , and for that she never trust even me . when she gets wild and scream at me , after two minutes she sticks to me and wanting to show that she is sorry for that , but she can't let me to go her outside and lose her.
I can not travel , I love her more than life itself , and the only thing that is important for me is not to fail as a parent . and i don't know what to do , Is it possible to knock her down somehow and take her to the wet , I'm desperate , I really am.

Please consider trying organic apple cider vinegar, mixed 1:1 with water. Get a small plastic syringe from the vet. Squirt it into their mouth gently. I paid 3000 for my cat getting him unblocked…. He got blocked again twice in a short amount of time. (‘was using dry food, I’m poor).
After the second time he began to show signs again and I did a huge amount of digging on google for hours and found this home remedy. I tried it and it seemed to fix the problem within a day or two!
Also, if you can’t afford the UTI food, get a coffee grinder and grind up the dry food and mix it with a lot of water. If they won’t eat it, just wait them out a day or two. They will eventually lap it up.
This method has prevented him from getting an obstruction again. Recently he showed signs again and I used the ACV and it went away. Again.
Last thing, keep the litter box nearby and within sight so you can hear when your cat tries to urinate. This way you can tell if it’s helping and how bad the obstruction is. If you have multiple cats separate the one from the others and give them their own litter box. If you use clumping litter you can easily tell how much they urinate.
I hope this helps someone who can’t afford the thousands of dollars in bills at the vet. I can’t be sure but I think it really works. The main thing I have learned is that you have to get them to drink more water so make sure you mix their food with a lot of water. They’ll pee a lot more but it’s fine for them. Good luck,
