  • Although Apple was behind in the ai arms race, Apple Intelligence might end up being one of the most substantial developments we have seen in artificial intelligence. Not because of the ai features it enables, but how it enables them in an accessible way with what could be the biggest ai user base yet.

I trust apple... but when I think about it I don't really know why. Like what's to stop someone being employed who works maliciously within the company. Personally I don't really care much about person data (madness I know but ... I'm not that interesting lol) so I don't loose sleep but for those that do I always find it interesting that apple says 'trust us' and we do. But if another company says 'trust us' we go nope they must be up to something evil.
The irony this time is open ai is seen as one of the untrustworthy companies (again dunno why lol) but now they have partnered with apple and we just take their word for it that its all secure haha

I disagree on the image generation. Everyone keeps showing the goofy images in the iMessage example, but what looks very useful is when you are working on a keynote, it will look at the context of the slides and create relevant images for your presentation. Obviously you wouldn’t use this in place of real world images where applicable, but to quickly create visually interesting slides, this would save a ton of time. Plus the models can be continuously updated via system updates to provide more styles and improve quality. Also keep in mind this is happening locally on device within seconds, so to create even this quality at the start is impressive and will only get better as models are refined and hardware improves.

Even when the OS's are released as final, Apple Intelligence will be still in beta, and US English to start. So in a few years when you're ready to upgrade, Apple Intelligence will be even better. If you want these processor-intensive features, you will need a more recent phone or iPad or Mac. It's the same with the "Pro" moniker -- those devices have the best of the best processors and features. My iPad mini I can tell runs slower than my iPhone, so there's no way I'd expect to be able to run this kind of tech on an iPad mini.

They were never behind. They had AI in other forms like ML running several features of native apps, but they didn't market it as heavily before because it's brought to the user to use seamlessly within the apps. They now just have to market it as AI (of course with their own spin on it) but to your point, it's all about privacy, and why shouldn't these LMMs be able to perform on local data that isn't sent elsewhere to be processed. I've been waiting for YEARS for this type of stuff, and really hope it's more like Vision Pro than Siri, that surprises and delights by actually working. Only a few times not working and people will stop using altogether.

Great video. I agree. Apple calmed a lot of fears of creators and the general public around “AI”. Apple started by restructuring their AI around a set of basic principles. 80% of users will not need ChatGPT. All the Writing Tools, Calculator notes, Image Playground, Genmoji and Siri with App Intents will occur on device or using APPLE servers. The rest the user base can choose ChatGPT and potentially other LLM’s.

Apple has done a great job spending it’s +20% profit with marketing. I still can’t believe that people are excited about a proposed improved “AI” experience with a dismal Siri assistant. Don’t get me wrong, Apple does make some nice hardware and since they control all of that experience, their software is better than Android with that all inclusive experience. So, if you’re in the Apple ecosystem, its nice to have everything working together most of the time, but know that your are paying more for it too. As I get older and see Apple for what they do, I’m not so enthusiastic about what they say every year at WWDC. It never lives up to the hype.

I think you’re vastly overestimating the impact of the Apple Intelligence branding. Many people may not have adopted AI yet but people are well acquainted with the term artificial intelligence. They’ll either continue to call it artificial intelligence or they’ll call Apple Intelligence Siri like they have since the 4s.

No, nobody is going to start thinking AI means “Apple Intelligence” the way people say “just Google it.” Generative AI (not actual AI) is already firmly entrenched in the lexicon, and is only getting more popular. “Apple Intelligence” is just going to be called Siri. Everyone knows Siri already. Most of these features will be accessed through Siri. Siri is already established in the lexicon.

AI es not a product; ostensibly, AI is NOT an Oracle that knows-it-all. A lot of companies get it wrong. AI systems are an improvement of old systems with semantics and intelligent action, Apple seems to be going this way. We'll see if it gets "there"

Google are literally at the forefront of the kind of AI Apple are rebranding and making available "for the rest of us". Android won't be destroyed by this - in fact - it will simply push innovation of AI features on mobiles over the next 10 years.

If only Google and Microsoft worked with FreeBSD like Apple and Sony did, then they wouldn’t have to battle with OpenAI and Linux when there is GNU/Linux or Lignux.
Because GNU and Linux come hand in hand since GNU came first and Linux came derived from GNU.
MIT and GPL licenses for the win.

I agree this is very exciting, and probably the best of what Apple has offered since before the iphone had a notch, but Apple is a MASTER of marketing. At this point, I have to use it to buy into their marketing. Especially after the Vision Pro.
I mean, on device AI is all the rage in Laptops and other form factors, so that's not necessarily Apple specific. And Marketing all the features that people believe to be AI as "Apple Intelligence" is good marketing, but it still isn't doing anything unheard of.
I think we need to slow our roll with the hype train and just wait.
I'd ask Siri what to expect, but as you said, she kinda sucks.

The Apple sheep are being fleeced. "If your iPhone, iPad or Mac will miss out on the majority of new features that Apple’s next-gen operating systems will bring, consider upgrading to a newer device later this year." Cult of Mac.

Yes, we throw away our Apple devices to buy new ones in order to be able to use the new functions. Their AI stuff is not yet available, when it appears they will still be at least one year behind and they need to buy services from OpenAI to be able to catch up... but they just won AI?!? We will see... I'm sure most people will think what a great company Apple is, while they throw their HomePods into the garbage can.

No sir, the Ai on the Pixel is ahead. Example: Pixel Call Waiting, I received a call from the DR office without my Pixel ringing, the Google Assistant aka AI, answers the call in the background without me knowing and once the Assistant verified that it's a legitimate call and not a spam, it notify me that it's the doctor office and then I answered the call. The AI conducted a full conversation without me knowing. And I could go on and on. No sir, the Google Pixel is ahead.
