      Saf, you are missing a lot of important cultural context needed to understand these videos and the reasons/layout behind them and their affiliated websites. Usually, I'm impressed by your video research but some of the things you said come off as disparaging in this video due to your lack of cultural context.

      The experiment was not performed correctly. Door handles don't harbour much bacteria because it's not a good environment for growth. They left the plates at 26 degrees for 5 days which, combined with the poor swabbing choice, has only grown satellite colonies. If she wants to do it properly, I would suggest she swabs a part of the human body, preferably a clammy area like armpit or feet. Then grow it at 37 degrees for no more than 2 days. She needs to grow the plates agar facing down to prevent condensation and contamination that she saw. Source: phd in microbiology.

    • @GraveyardOracle
      @GraveyardOracle 8 місяців тому +173

      Came to say this. IMO if I spilled a pot of dirt on my floor I wouldn’t immediately grab the roomba. I’d sweep first then roomba the tiny bits.

    • @clueless_cutie
      @clueless_cutie 8 місяців тому +59

      Yeah the hobot is intended for the slow build up of car exhaust, pollen, and rain run off with the occasional bird poo splat. Though depending on the size and diets of the birds in your area... could end up just as smeared and gross as a roomba hitting a fresh gift from a chihuahua. Results will vary. There's also definitely a poor hobot out there that has been bombed by a bird poo...
      But almost anyone with windows that are exposed to gradual grime build up would benefit from giving the exteriors of the windows a good scrub down every now and then. Since most people don't clean the outside of their windows and have probably not realized just how much small particulate dirt has accumulated on the glass. Clean both sides and you might feel like your home is suddenly brighter. I know this is especially true for any of my windows that face the road

    Hi Safiya, Microbiology labs teacher here, nice to see you delving deeper into scientific testing! Did not expect to find agar plates when clicking the video, haha.
    Just a few tips here (if you ever want to test more), there's an easier method for surface testing; we would usually use Rodac or "contact plates" (where the growth medium can be put directly into contact of a surface). These will pick up a lot more. As for controls. The chlorox wipes were a good positive control (disinfectant effect to be expected), but a normal water spray treatment (no blue light) would have been a good negative control to add as well. Happy to help if you want to know more.
    Now I'm off to find that window cleaner thing, cause I don't have a balcony and have neglected our 2nd floor windows for way too long!

      I think you meant "graphic" instead of "screenshot." I don't think they even had screenshotting back when that was made lol. A graphic is basically a small .png file that can be scaled up or down, and they're usually in .png format because a lot of logos have transparent backgrounds (so a .jpeg is less likely to be used).
      Anyway, not that it's a big deal or anything. I was just confused for a second until I realized you probably meant to say "graphic," so I figured this would be a great opportunity to explain why the word "graphic" might have been more appropriate to use there. @@ninjaturtles12121 i mean with a swimsuit that you're okay wearing again without actually cleaning each time, the spin drying feature alone is actually perfect if it works very well. this is a legitimate way of getting a decent amount of water out of clothes. the public pool i went to as a kid had machines that did this in the locker room specifically for drying your swimsuit to a pretty reasonable lightly-damp level so you didn't totally soak your bag going home. and in china clothes dryers are not super common, most stuff is hung up to dry, so even in a real washing machine you would likely treat your clothes similarly. even in the US my washing machine that is not new has a spin dry feature, and it greatly reduces the time it takes something to air dry by wicking so much of the water out first. rather than waiting forever for a soaked swimsuit to drip dry, you can do that and overnight it should easily be fully (or almost) dry

      It’s also to sell things. It doesn’t apply to the western market though because of the lack of products and similar pricing. However, with Aliexpress and more prominently Temu, the western market is finally able to get some of these products. There are legit brand name storefronts on both but the reason why SHEIN works so well in the U.S. is the same reason why people assume Temu has bad quality even though Temu doesn’t manufacture anything. Americans (I’m saying this as an American) prefer buying the cheapest alternative. A lot of the stuff bought are stuff a Chinese person wouldn’t even look at due to poor quality. SHEIN would not be a big company within China. Chinese people are much more willing to spend money and waaaaaay more likely to complain so the cheapest quality/price model doesn’t work nearly as well in China.

    For me the thing about the "blue light" uv cleaning/disinfecting products is that I work in a high school lab-- we have a uv disinfecting chamber for the goggles the students use. It's not aesthetic. It's heavy duty metal with no windows and so so many warnings about not to look at the light inside once turned on because it could do permanent damage to your eyes. The goggles need to be left in the chamber for at minimum five minutes of continuous harsh uv light to be disinfected properly. So any time I see a "uv disinfecting" product with big windows or just out in the open flashlight style I immediately think oh well that's just a blue party light and even if it was actual uv with how quickly they just breeze the light over things, it isn't disinfecting anything.

In this scenario, this mini machine is quite handy for a family.😄

    A small note since you mentioned it more than once, a control in an experiment is when a variable isn't being added to a test group. So your controls in your experiments would be the door handle with daily use germs, lettuce before any cleansing happened, etc. The household cleaners such as the Clorox, regular vegetable wash, and apartment washer are different test groups that can be used to compare methods.

    • @Lilaspourmoi
      @Lilaspourmoi 8 місяців тому +40

      Technically you can have two types of controls, negative and positive. In that case, the clorox is already assumed to work and provide for a « positive » control in which it is not a variable. It allows for a good idea of what a « clean « handle is supposed to look like after swabbing on petri dishes.

    • @augustlyedits
      @augustlyedits 8 місяців тому +3

      @@Lilaspourmoi I'm pretty sure you guys are just describing the different between a dependent and an independent variable.

    • @gracedreifuerst
      @gracedreifuerst 8 місяців тому +15

      @@augustlyedits No that's not what @lilaspourmoi was saying. Positive controls are used to determine the effectiveness of your methodology. They're used to confirm the experiment is providing the information it's supposed to provide. A negative control is used to determine the effectiveness of changing a variable to eliminate the chance of results being a regularly occurring phenomenon. In this case, the negative control would be doing nothing and the positive control is using disinfectant

  • @seisage
    @seisage 8 місяців тому +78

    I love that you actually tested the disinfecting gun and produce cleaner!! I feel like a lot of other creators wouldn't have gone so far as to do agar plates and suit up to spray and test pesticides lmao. Good on you for actually doing some preliminary testing on these products!
    Just FYI though, the "controls" are not true controls. They're additional treatments! A true control is meant to reveal potential confounding variables that may affect your results. For example: with the agar plates, the Clorox wipe is a treatment. You're _doing_ something under the hypothesis that it will affect your results. A true control would be using a dry cotton swab with nothing on it and swiping that over the agar. The purpose of that is to see if the cotton swab itself has any effect on the agar. That way, you can be sure that any results you see from your door handle swabs are actually meaningful and aren't due to your methods/tools. Of course, these were just for fun tests and not for science, so it doesn't really matter, but I thought I'd clarify some terminology!

    Fun fact, all of these items come from Taobao! It’s a Chinese retailer that’s pretty comparable to ebay or Amazon, but for the Chinese market. You can buy from there direct from outside of China but it’s rather tricky if you can’t read Chinese, so most people aiming to do that will go through a 3rd party shopping service like Superbuy who will get the items for you and ship internationally. Most all Aliexpress and otherwise drop shipped items originally come from there!

I keep it in my bathroom and once a week throw in the bras I used that week, do a wash cycle with a tiny amount of laundry soap, then a rinse cycle and then I hang them up. I don't use the "spin" cycle at all because it's pointless...but for "handwashing" bras it's wonderful and bras that I bought 6 months ago are still fitting like they did when they were brand new, no deterioration of the elastic or bending of the wires. Honestly...if I was going on a trip for longer than a week, I'd likely figure out how to bring it with me so I could wash socks, bras and underpants and shirts as needed.
