Avoiding The FAIL Of My Last LS SWAP *67 Camaro Rear-End Upgrades*

  • I bought a 67 Camaro RS for only $6,500 and I'm taking it to LS Fest East in only 6 days.
    Now that the Powerglide transmission and the LS2 from J&J Auto Wrecking is ready to go, we're going to try to install it and get everything else ready to go as well. As always, things don't exactly go according to plan. The LS2 is getting the complete Holley EFI treatment and some BRAND NEW HK Wheels as well. To get that power to the ground we're rebuilding the entire rear-end and adding a posi-trac from Yukon Gear and Axle.

    I have seen the wheels pull out on a ford van on a busy 6 lane freeway in San Antonio, TX on a ford van. Whole wheel and axle came out at 70mph. Dude managed to stop it without incident and get pulled over. That wheel and axle bounced and wobbled around in heavy traffic from the right lane all the way to median and nobody tagged it! Nice progress. I hope you're planning on some Cal-Tracs, or at least a set of old-school slapper bars. Otherwise those monoleaf rear springs are just going to wrap up when you get on it, resulting in wheel hop instead of smoke. They were notorious for it even at stock power levels, which is why Chevy dropped that design after one year and went with conventional multi-leaf springs for '68.

    3:13 in, you guys didn't see all the slop in that front pinion? That's where your noise is. A rear end should NEVER clunk like that. I have a feeling they are going to slap it together, send it, and blow it up Like roll smokes diff. Ok. Should watch the whole vid. Good job JR. Little tip, take the ring gear and bearings and put in a 250 degree oven for 30-45 minutes, put the carrier in the freezer overnight. The bearings and ring gear will just drop on like butter.

      After inspecting their build, I'm pretty confident that one will have at least 30 minutes of decent 11s in it, which is all he needs right now. I'd send it too without fear. I was more worried that he implied he had the entire weight of the axles, wheels, tires, and presumably brakes hanging on the axle seals.
      But... Same logic applies: It will do a few cool burnouts. So, meh...

      Honestly I'm four years into a mechanical engineering degree and trying to learn how modern LSDs work makes my head hurt. Insane how somebody came up with this stuff with all the clutches and everything.

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 4 роки тому +5

      @@rvne3959 A simple clutch or cone style LSD is actually really easy to understand. You have friction plates (clutches) held against each other by spring tension from side-to-side. Once the friction exceeds what the springs can hold, the clutches slip and the axles are allowed to move at different speeds like an open diff. That's why it's "limited slip". Something like a true locker doesn't slip at all once it locks up under load. Basic lockers are even easier to understand. Look up something like a Richmond Powertrax and you should be able to follow along from the installation manual.
      If you're looking at stuff like a torsen or some of the e-trac stuff, those can be a lot more complex. I'm no expert, but the torsen is basically just a crazy series of hypoid gear sets that are just always fighting each other and are much more difficult to understand without one in your hands.

    • @gwick358
      @gwick358 4 роки тому +2

  • @markperalta2995

    I think you'll be more happy with a more refined driveability and streetable torsen differential.
    "A typical open has a 1.1 to 1 bias ratio due to some small internal friction. The non spinning wheel gets 1.1 times as much torque (10% more) than the spinning wheel. The Torsen differential for Camaro SS has a 2.2 to 1 bias ratio, therefore, the non spinning wheel gets 2.2 times as much torque as the spinning wheel. The Torsen will support up to a 2.2:1 torque imbalance before it differentiates (unlike the open), and then will differentiate at the 2.2:1 ratio. With the spool, there is actually a negative torque on the outside wheel in a turn making it difficult to turn in the intended path. This can also occur with spring preloaded limited slip differential under low torque. The Torsen applies a positive torque to both drive wheels in a turn. Another benefit of Torsen: in an aggressive turn, the inside rear wheel loses some traction and the Torsen then biases torque to the outside wheel which tends to pull the car through the turn (instead of sliding sideway). If the rear loses traction and the driver releases the throttle, Torsen biases the engine braking torque to the outside wheel which helps to lessen the severity of a spin-out."

      What makes you think that those plates are in Johns name? It's highly unlikely that he has registered a car that he pulled from his neighbors house and does not plan on driving on the streets for months.

    No cowl hood!? In my opinion first gen Camaros don't look right unless they have a cowl hood.. but it's your car. Were the axles worn? did you replace the outboard axle bearings?
