But still 57 sec is really slow for an athelete like you. I never made it big in track, I dropped track 2 years ago but since then I am doing cross fit and wight training , I ran a 400 dash last week even though I am heavier than during my track days by 15 pounds , Last week I managed to run 400 in 50.8 sec which is 2 seconds more than my personal best. Nick j beleive you can still run below 50 even in this current body weight if you make up your mind for it.
Nick’s still cranking out impressive results, making us other 30-somethings feel self conscious. Ha! In high school I ran 50.42 in the open 400m and about 48.00 in a 4x400 split at 195lbs. 15 years and 20 pounds later I’d struggle to get it done under 1 minute!

I don't like the whole I feel better so I must be healthier logic. He feels better because he has to run less. Iirc within the last 6 months he has ran a 52 or 53 second 400m. To drop to a 57 with his base means he's probably just not running. But I think telling his audience that would hurt his brand lol
@@nc8186 It's not clickbait. If someone's baited because they actually think he ran his fastest 400m years after retiring, they might need to get their brain checked. The extra muscle definitely helped me. I used to run regional 8 and 4 and as I got older the extra mass definitely gave me quicker starts. At 29 I ran a 53s 400.
I presently have the WL time in the 400m in the M60 age group. I ran 57 indoor in March, hoping to go 56 outdoor season, maybe 55. In regard to body weight for optimum performance for older sprinters, here it is: Whatever you weighed at your peak athletic period as a youth, for most age 18-mid 20s, at age 50, 60+ you should weigh at or slightly LESS than you weighed then. Why? Because at 50,60+ you can not build muscle or recover at the same rate as a late teens - early 20s athlete. SO, in order to obtain the best strength to weight ratio for optimum race performance as an athlete especially 55+ ...weigh less than you did as a college athlete and lift, train your ass off. I weighed 143 as a region champion HS sprinter, I weigh 137 now at almost age 61, and I'm crushing my workouts, less aches and pains than I had when I weighed just 6 lbs more. Surviving 400m training is everything, and a lighter body weight will get you that.
I weighed 136-140 lbs while running track/XC in highschool. Stopped running and lifted all the time, reached 205 lbs. Last year I started running again and am now to 170 lbs!
I put on about 20 pounds in my first couple of months as a college freshman sprinter, actually think the weight has created more momentum and speed for myself. Went from 138 to currently 157
Greetings from Germany. Awesome performance. I started running regularly in May this year. I improved my time for 400m from 1:48 to 1:17 and I hope in 2021 i could reach 1:10. I will work for that goal! 🏃♂️ Keep going with your contant, it's great to see your passion for running 👍🏻 *one day later ... I improved my personal best by two seconds to 1:15 🤟🏻
As long as you`re having FUN- that`s what matters. I ran a 400m in training (alone) this summer in 1:04. I am 52 yrs old, and 191/98kg. Which is 10kg more than me as a 20year old. My best discipline was the triple jump, so I don`t really have the stamina for the 400. But I still enjoy running! Grüsse aus Oslo
absolutely love this vid Nick! Thank you for posting this great topic. As I've gotten older (in my 40's now) it's been way harder to keep the weight down. ESPECIALLY during this pandemic, my wife and I have enjoyed our wine just a little too often now! lol Fantastic 400 by the way, hell ya man.
I love your videos and have been watching for a couple months now, I’m running cross country and track in high school and you’re keeping me motivated at the end of my season.
Love your discussion about weight and running (could be applied to all athletic pursuits though)! Healthy weight has to be the most effective weight to maintain for life balance, and especially for keeping amateurs like most people watching this motivated through the years!
I'm 1,79 m (5'10.5'') and I feel fat if I'm over 150 lbs. I feel my best at around 140 lbs. I used to weigh around 175-180 lbs when I was younger and into weight lifting. Now I'm a long distance runner.
Weight lifting definitely helps with that speed and power, managed to hit 39s for 300m but I mostly run xc, hard to find that ideal weight to keep my strength and endurance
I appreciate the perspective. If you optimize a single parameter (time), you have a chance to be a world champion like Nick, but you may not be in best overall fitness and health, and for runners low racing weight is king, while your body and mind can handle that. For the rest of us as well, we all have choices to optimize more than just a best possible time.
For myself, I reflect I ran some of my best 10 mile to half marathon races in my 40s where I was limping within 5-15 minutes of finishing, overused muscles tightening up, so I knew there were tradeoff for glory. If I did more strength training, perhaps I would have been minutes slower, but I could have felt better at the end.
Hi! I do track to and my fastest time for the 400m is a 1:07 I'm 12 years old and I practice with my dad in my free time but I also run for a track team.
Nice. My best 400 was a 60 on a 4x400 relay in a summer track meet I was talked into doing. I did put in a 63 on the first lap of a 1500 race in college. Right now I don't think I can beat 90 and I am 80 lbs heavier and 38 years older. If I can get back down to 185 I might try and see if I can go under 90. Nice to see you still challenging yourself.
Solid run, Nick! Quick question, I'm considering investing in a Freelap timer myself. I have the Jawku one right now, but it is often pretty iffy. How do you like the Freelap system? Also do you find much difference between using the system with the touch pro transmitter vs. with just using the junior transmitters like you are here? Thanks man! I love the videos and I think it's awesome what you're doing these days after your running career.
Nick, I have an idea for a race. Start with a number of runners, say 50 for example. The number can be whatever. Every minute, the person who is in last place is eliminated from the race. Keep running until 1 person is left.
I pulled a 55.41 which is .77 faster than I did last season. I’m also racing at my heaviest ever at 76.3kg. I’m 5’9 which puts my bmi at 25.2. When I did my 48 in high school. I was 63kg which is also the same weight I ran my 2:56 marathon four years ago. Am a 36 year old sloth myself but keep on chugging away. I hope to break 50 again one day. The Freelap timing system is good for helping push. Also want to break 11 for the 100 again. Never made it to the Olympics as burnt out young but could still make it in World masters.
I m 48 and interested in training for 400 meters , I ran 58 seconds at 210 lbs when I was 19.....only training for football.......I weigh about the same now (208 lbs )and have no lower body injuries whatsoever. I wonder if I have a chance running that time again ? I’ve spent the last 3 years only training for kickboxing and jujutsu. I m awaiting minor surgery on my hand and can’t work and have nothing else to do.
Hey nick, i have been watching your chanel for a long time and i have stated to run track and i am enjoying it. everyday i tell myself i need to be the bison. and i have been telling my family about you and they are say i think he might be your idol.
47-something is no joke. I'm kind of sad I retired before I was ever able to put on muscle - I was 6'1" 140lbs when I finished college and got down to like 49.3 which I was pretty happy with but 47 is *really* saying something.
I don’t know how mid and long distance runner have so much weight, I’m 5’9 and I’ve been stuck between 125 and 130 and can never go above or below those weights whether in offseason or mid season or whenever!
Same here. Ultimate hardgainer. I do calisthenics three times a week but I've been within a bandwidth of a few kilos all my adult life. At 50 I'm now around 63,5 kg (@178 cm) which is almost as heavy as I have ever been!
hi nick love the video thanks for making a video and also i enjoyed the sharks and monos my dog wyatt just died and i really loved him and now i have this video to cheer me up thanks nick your the best
This shows you why I love track and field. This is a world-class runner who was known for his finish. Yet for his event the 800 and even the 1500/ mile a 47.6 is just agonizingly slow. Most of his competitors could run that without breaking a sweat with PR of 45.5 or better. This may also explain why in championship races he was always just so close.
I was going to say the same thing. Most of these world class 800 guys are running 45 for a 400. If Nick could've run somewhere in the 45's, who knows what his 800 time would've been. Nonetheless, 1:42 is a spectacular time that only a few dozen people have ever run.

Really loved that you talked a lot about race weight. Running youtube channels don't usually do that! Great info!
Keep going with your contant, it's great to see your passion for running 👍🏻
*one day later ... I improved my personal best by two seconds to 1:15 🤟🏻
FloggingDrop glad I am not the only German being in love with his videos...
Keep up the great videos!! I love watching them and I’m always excited to see the notification when you post!
I love your videos and have been watching for a couple months now, I’m running cross country and track in high school and you’re keeping me motivated at the end of my season.
Thank you symmonds for the book , it's for free and i'm very happy to dawnload it 💗
Nick symmonds the 🐐 back with another video
I realise that nick hasn't ran a 4x100 metre relay please make a video on this after this global pandemic
Love your discussion about weight and running (could be applied to all athletic pursuits though)! Healthy weight has to be the most effective weight to maintain for life balance, and especially for keeping amateurs like most people watching this motivated through the years!
Love every video
Great to see Nick still in great form after a full career!!
Thank you Kaz!!
Did my first ever race which was a 400m on 59.55 with a 200m in 27,i was kinda lactic on the last 100m... 😂
Love this vidéo!
Lol I do 27s 3 200 workout with 7 minute rest struggle doing sub 60 400 and im not on running shape
Hi nick I hope you see this, I run the 800 also and I was undefeated in my season, you inspire me.
INCREDIBLE!!! Keep up the great work.
Nick Symmonds thanks your amazing
1:00. Absolutely flawless form!!!
Good to see you back, Nick! Hope you're doin swell man!
YESSIR NIIICCCKKKKK I’m sooo excited
I'm 1,79 m (5'10.5'') and I feel fat if I'm over 150 lbs. I feel my best at around 140 lbs. I used to weigh around 175-180 lbs when I was younger and into weight lifting. Now I'm a long distance runner.
Nice job Nick!! Always impressed with the content man!!! Keep it up!!
This guy runs fast he should compete in olympics.
😂
To me Bison this was your only weakness that kept you from the apex of the world in your event.Your heart and desire were never in question.
Keep making those great videos👍
This is what I've been telling my runner friend, in the end, lifting weights will actually improve their performance
Awesome job Nick 🔥
Weight lifting definitely helps with that speed and power, managed to hit 39s for 300m but I mostly run xc, hard to find that ideal weight to keep my strength and endurance
As a distance runner I can only watch with a jealous gaze. Couldn't dream of that sort of pace.
watching nick symmonds new video>Going to xc practice 😂
Awesome stuff! Love your content nick keep it up!
Great video
Always great videos. Thank you Nick.
Double upload let’s go
Nice run man, Good running form🏃♂️
Hi! I do track to and my fastest time for the 400m is a 1:07 I'm 12 years old and I practice with my dad in my free time but I also run for a track team.
You're fast! Keep it up im sure one day you'll be one of the people young people look up to!
Damn your hella fast
That’s awesome considering your only 12, keep up the great work and you might even end up in the olympics!
I was thinking about training for 400, just for myself
Thank you for being an inspiration!! This is the closest I've gotten to Track and Field! Thank you!
I'm surprised you didn't plug run gum before you started!!
HI NICK I LOVE THE VIDS CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP ON WEDNESDAY FOR XC AND IM HYPED
Good luck!🏃♀️
GOOD LUCK!!!!
Thanks so much! Love the running community 🤪😝
The 400m is such a brutal race
Running form is much improved . U look smoother
Good job! That is outstanding!
Always waiting for your video's. Quiet entertaining 🔥. Lots of love from Nepal .
I think its amazing how you still read the comments.
With how well rounded you are, I could see you competing in the decathlon.
That would be SO MUCH FUN!! And also a great video ;)
@@nicksymmonds Dan & Dave style
@@nicksymmonds Might need to practice pole vault
Nick, Can you do an all out 1500 meters race vs subscribers?
I'm one of your subscribers!!!
Hey nick, i have been watching your chanel for a long time and i have stated to run track and i am enjoying it. everyday i tell myself i need to be the bison. and i have been telling my family about you and they are say i think he might be your idol.
Congrats! :)
Thank you Timothy!!
I broke my foot three weeks ago but already miss track so much. So I am binge watching Nick's videos lol.
Great job Nick! 57 is still a very respectable time in the 400!
For an overall healthy body, would you say that jogging and running is better than other exercises (lifting, pushups, etc)?
You really should be doing both if possible. Strength training - Cardio - etc. helps you be well rounded
Definitely not. See Starting Strengths episode on running vs lifting: ua-cam.com/video/PCXppbxif0Y/v-deo.html
this video will tell u all about it m.ua-cam.com/video/ub82Xb1C8os/v-deo.html
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I just got rick-rolled for the first time ever. U just ruined my streak.

47-something is no joke. I'm kind of sad I retired before I was ever able to put on muscle - I was 6'1" 140lbs when I finished college and got down to like 49.3 which I was pretty happy with but 47 is *really* saying something.
Nick, you should try a fast 5k
I don’t know how mid and long distance runner have so much weight, I’m 5’9 and I’ve been stuck between 125 and 130 and can never go above or below those weights whether in offseason or mid season or whenever!
Same here. Ultimate hardgainer. I do calisthenics three times a week but I've been within a bandwidth of a few kilos all my adult life. At 50 I'm now around 63,5 kg (@178 cm) which is almost as heavy as I have ever been!
Absolutely Amazing!
dude, what a strong message. Thx
Great video, lots of information thank you for
hi nick love the video thanks for making a video and also i enjoyed the sharks and monos my dog wyatt just died and i really loved him and now i have this video to cheer me up thanks nick your the best
why don’t you have more subscribers:(, you deserve a whole lot more !🥺
This shows you why I love track and field.
Nice job nick.
