One of the things that I love about you and Herb, Steve, is that you don't get all gaga over a piece of equipment simply because it costs an arm and a leg. Cheap stuff that sounds good can get you just as excited! I love that. Thanks, guys!
i bought a philips amplifier with low power but when conecting it, i was kind of struck by lightening ,the way the high´s sounded ,this already having heard the best from Pioneer, Sansui, Kenwood or Marantz(that in the 80´s had the sound of this litle 79 F series from philips) i paid less of what today is 20 € and for two years i stoped my spec-1 and 2 to listen to this litle philips, both my pre and power amplifier from Pioneer were given to me by my father ,not my choice but i used to listen to music on them before they were mine(without permission)
I met Herb at the Capital Audio Fest last year. He was speaking to a few other luminaries in the business, and I listened, didn't speak, I was mesmerized. Steve, once again your skills bring out the best of each guest.
I had a moment of realization that all of us are after the same thing, we just approach it in different directions. I began with 'imaging', then chased 'tonality', then pursued 'resolution', and finally after achieving a balance of these, I found the right mix of equipment (for me in my room on my budget, $5,000) that elicits the 'emotion' of the musician and the moment. Be encouraged! You are on the right path, maybe just coming at it from a different angle than others!
Excellent casual interview with the sights and sounds of NY in the background and of course Herb, a treasure in hifi. You're both lucky to have each other as friends and a great cheer to you both from Ottawa, Canada. Stay healthy, we want more of you both for many years to come!
I'm going on 74 and you guys reminiscing of the various gear you had was so awesome! Had me remembering my past Audio Gear and some of my first Solid State Gear which I thought was so cool after ditching my Tube Amps! LOL!
Thanks Steve and Herb! I’m of a similar vintage as you guys and I still fondly remember listening to “The Wall” hours on end with my Technics receiver, Technics turntable, and big Fisher speakers. In my college fraternity we catalogued all of our cassette tapes so we could play a game called select hits. You would give the “DJ” the side and counter number so no one knew what was coming until he hit play. My roommate in that fraternity opened my audio world from classic rock in Georgia to his eclectic library from Buffalo New York which included jazz and blues. It always has been and always will be about the music and our community.
It's hard not to like you two men "in your best age" (like me) with a lovely boyish heart talking about their passion. It reminds me of the passage of the song "what a wonderful world": "I see friends shaking hands; Saying how do you do; They're really saying; I love you". I could listen to you guys all day - and then some. Thanks for sharing your experience, opinions and not least passion for music and the equipment we use to get the communication right :-).

Great interview two of my favorite people. April 2011 I bought my first Stereophile magazine recommended components issue. I was looking to totally change my system. The writers we’re people I could identify with, and they were very entertaining. Later when Sam and Stephen left, I thought it’s going to be hard to replace these gentlemen. Then Herb came aboard and after reading his first article, I knew everything would be OK. Steve another great episode!

What a wonderful interview. Really good to see that British speakers designed for the BBC back in the 70s? Are still sounding as good as many of the overpriced audiophile speakers of today. Some of my gear is 50 years old. Audio technica cartridges are amazing value for money. I have 2. An at 3600 l and a at ac03 moving coil. One of the best little nuggets of Audiophiliac's vblog is discovering those music gem recommendations from Steve and his guests. And boy o' boy did Herb come through with Michael Payton's Afro-Caribbean Mixtape. This is an astonishing album. The fusion of jazz, hip hop, latin jazz, afro-funk, all wrapped into one amazing album. The rich sound and texture coming through my B&W 706 S2...Wow, wow, wow. Thanks again Steve.

The best sound system I ever heard is the one I invented and listen to now. It lacks nothing. It sounds exactly the way I want it to, not someone else's idea. There's nowhere for me to go from here but down. I enjoy some of the audiophile postings. They amuse me but I take nothing anybody in this industry says seriously. I've met some of them in person, others in line. I like some of them, others I found repulsive. Don't worry Steve. I'm a subscriber. I admire the enthusiasm audiophiles have no matter how clueless they are.
Very insightful interview with a walking library of audiophilia. I wish I had that impressive market survey of Herb, would save my a lot of money on my audiophile try-and-error career over decades.

As a vinyl returnee, last tt was an entry level Dual, Sony entry level receiver, Sony single cassette player, Bose 501's which I bought late 70's. Just bought DIY Audio ACA (from listening to your glowing review) and Klipsch r51m, Pro-ject elemental tt, Node 2i and lets see what happens! Love you & Herb's conversations and hearing about other affordable to me audio choices, thanks to you both!
That blew my mind when herb recommended Audio Tech. Ordered one from radio shack and thought this can’t be true, was already a stereophile subscriber so l knew the thousand dollar options-not a bad decision for a quick fix! Influenced by an ad in said magazine-Greetings from Chicago Herb!
Skip ahead 30-40 years. Nobody is going to be wishing that they had held onto their first Bluetooth speaker or ipod they owned. Do the world a favor and support your local audio tech, teach a ten year old how to handle records and turntables. Instead of selling off your accumulated analog equipment to guys your age and older, give it to a kid who reminds you of yourself, pass it on like the accumulated knowledge of an early tribal village. Take on an apprentice if you are an audio journeyman.

Why did Stereo Review and High Fidelity 'fail'? A stash (late 60's early 70's) recently captivated me! They covered audio gear, but also music itself in depth and quality difficult to find today at least in magazine form. Has Internet, UA-cam et. al. been a factor? (Gutemberg's revenge!) The shift to AV and Home Theater skewed public tastes? Pity! Music as an art form in the home has suffered.
@@juanmillaruelo7647 I suppose it came down in part because of low circulation, and it was no longer economically feasible to continue publication. The audiophile community has always been a very small percent of the population. If more people actually heard a decent system, maybe the industry would do better. And it doesn't have to be expensive. Fifteen hundred dollars can get a pretty good entry level system that provides lots of entertainment.
I really appreciate these interviews, my only gripe is I can't see Steve in the conversation. It would be oh so nice if you could toss-up a tripod and stand across from one another for the interview. Thank you for your work, I enjoy it very much!
I have owned a ton of tube and solid state high end stuff since 1970, none of it is anywhere as good as any of their reviews suggest, but solid state has certain advantages over tube and I tend to go with that. Here is my short list of the best: LP12/Ekos/Archiv, Naim 250; Audio Research D240 [solid state], Audible Illusion Mod 3 w/ J. Curl phono [tube] [tube]. Cary SLP90, Marantz 8b [tube]. Spendor A6R.

The audiophile community has always been a very small percent of the population. If more people actually heard a decent system, maybe the industry would do better. And it doesn't have to be expensive. Fifteen hundred dollars can get a pretty good entry level system that provides lots of entertainment.
I didn’t even realize I was a audiophile until I found steve
I really appreciate these interviews, my only gripe is I can't see Steve in the conversation. It would be oh so nice if you could toss-up a tripod and stand across from one another for the interview. Thank you for your work, I enjoy it very much!
Added to my bucket list - dinner with you two guys!
Thank you Steve! And thank you herb! Always a treat to listen to herb. Fun to listen to his stories! And they don't have to all be about audiophile. I think herb needs to tell some stories about his previous life building race cars. Heard him mention that a time or 2 and more curious about it. Herb brought up a great idea. Need to get herb together in a video chat session with Nelson, dan dagastino, along with Jason and like from schiit audio. That would be interesting listening to stories just flow! Thanks again and herb you need to make more appearances on Steve's channel !
