Art had such an amazing way of describing and painting a picture of a piece of music, which almost causes you to hear what he’s speaking about. What an amazing individual he seems to be.
Oh my lord, what beautiful turntables! He’s almost a magician at explaining and reviewing gear, and I love his somewhat “simplistic” approach of his explanation of extracting the sound from the grooves. Those plinths are beautiful!
I’ve tried the separate stereo and mono set up thing too, and I know what he’s talking about. To do mono correctly, I personally feel you need a true mono cart, summed L&R channels, etc.
Not to mention, when mono is properly set up, it can sound huge and amazing with great imaging and soundstage.
Thanks so much, Ken for interviewing Art for this vid. I loved it! 🎶🔊👍🙂

I have been enjoying following Art's journey through audio since the nascent days of Listener. I am glad that he is still spinning yarns for the rest of us to weave into our music and gear perceptions.

Right on Ken and Art! (and Mikey and Herb and John and Steve-) Honestly, this channel is growing to have some of the *best* audiophile/Jazz content on the entire web. It's odd that Stereophile apparently doesn't see the value in operating in this space (e.g. the kinds of video interviews and reviews you've been doing of late.) For the love of Monk, please don't stop! :-)

I had the same Thorens TD 124 and strange enough I painted it exactly the same colour...sold it to Schopper, the vintage Thorens-Guru from Switzerland, which has his shop only 10 miles from where I live. I miss Art, such a humble and cool guy.

Love it. Ken, you Art and Herb are the best audio writers going these days. Mikey and Gutt are in there as well. Remarkably, I stumbled across an OG Sonny Meets Hawk a year or so ago, one of my more expensive used record purchases. But, it's mint; moreover, the music is beautiful and sounds fantastic. Dynagroove, baby!

As I’ve said before, you really can’t beat those OJC pressings for value and sonics. Ken said that he rarely sees them coming in at JRC, probably because collectors hold on to them.

If Art is checking this: Is that an Ortofon RMG 309 on your TD-124? If so, what kind of headshell/cart do you plan on putting on it? Mono or stereo? If mono, true mono or horizontally compliant? How about a Decca Super Gold? Inquiring minds want to know!

    • @cristiangil9230

I have a couple of the newer pressing, Yusef Lateef Eastern Sounds and Bill Evans How My Heart Sings. Both sound good enough for me. I had an early Riverside pressing of How My Heart Sings and I sold it after I got the OJC. But I will say they aren’t quite as good as my 80’s OJC’s. They’re just another level.

Monk Lp's are fascinating. Are they music, maybe not? They do not appear to meet the criteria. But is the lack of emotion or absence of in his efforts in itself an expression of emotion? Do we consider boredom, detachment, surprise.(Airy, cerebral, extroverted, whimsy).....emotions?, that enable his efforts to be seen as music. If a robot was programmed to attempt piano playing it may sound like Monk. In the right state of mind his music is interesting, even pleasurable.

Did you know Paul Bley’s wife ? , As you make no mention of his wife IN CASE YOU DONT KNOW she was originally knowN when touring with him as Karen Bourg I think and eventually adopted, pre marriage, the name Carla Bley. She herself has a vast Discography, starting in 1844, both as leader, composer and impressive innovator. Recently issued Trio Albums with Steve Swallow and Andy Shepherd (Life goes on! Life goes on ) And Big Band Albums. A good sampler is Carla Bley Live
You also mention writer Stanley Crouch ...if you haven’ t tried any other of his writings he wrote a well received novel “ Don’t the moon look lonesome “ and another novel whose title I forget. Also a number of readable essays on race and ethnicity. I liked this vide blog as unlike lots of other ‘Stereophiles’ you never call anything ‘the best’ I feel that one man’s best is another man’s rubbish. Keep up the interesting and non pedantic work. I would have liked to have met you and chat.
