    A good source for bases is Aliexpress. The bases are just like the reaper bases but cheaper. Instead of getting 20 for $5 you get 100 for $7. Took 10 days to get to me but worth it

      I use wooden rounds, which are even cheaper. 200 for $7. They are a little thicker but wood takes glue, paint and drilling better than plastic.

    Secret strat, for grass you can just use cuttings from a $0.10 chip brush. They look like dry grass normally, but with a creative use of paint they can be any color you want!

    PSA: They change the name of the items if you are shopping online. I went by the item numbers listed on the lids in the video. Michaels added a 10 to the front of the number
    Fine Stone (483531) -> 10483531
    Coarse Stone (482444) -> 10482444

    Coarse building sand, pass it thru a sieve when its bone dry and you get a load of 'tiny rocks' and a tub of coarse sand.
    I asked for a mug full from a house nearby that was having some building work done, I now have a lifetime supply for free.
    For bigger (tiny) rocks I just pick up gravel from the side of my street.
    The Army Painter tufts are well worth the money though.

    I paint mainly metal minis, and often those that dont have a slotta base but have a small base with a small surface area, for these i like to literally use pennies, it adds a bit more weight to the mini and feels less top heavy when using pennies. Obviously i paint and dress the pennies too, and it works for my needs.

      If you are still curious i can add few more:
      1st - Hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate mixed with herbs to remove the colours, then add acrylics.
      2nd and 3rd is to either keep natural and remove the paints.
      You use charmomile tea , concrete liqiud primer+PvA+Herbs. After it hardens, it gets extremely dark, like a swamp wet.
      The hp+sc mix will make it yellow, like a dried up pine forest.
      Fine pebbles+coarse pikes from tea makes it like mediterennean soil.
      Just a few, try em

    I use a kitty litter it is super fine but the pieces are not all uniform so it gives it a good look. I don't usually bother with PVA glue anymore and just superglue everything but of course that can be a little more expensive. As well for rocks I just grabbed some black rocks that were in a garden by a dollar store and took them home and smashed them with a hammer to make small stones which look great because they are jagged and make the terrain look dangerous. Also depending on your dollar store you can buy those similar Michaels sand etc. for a little cheaper. At least that is where I found mine. Great video by the way as I am always looking for crafting on a budget. Cheers.

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator 5 років тому +2

      You know, I can honestly say that I have never thought of using kitty litter for d&d haha. That is a super great idea though! I like how it makes it non-uniform like you said.
      Yeah superglue is best, but I just don't like wasting so much of it. (Though in reality is isn't all that much.)
      I totally like the sharp broken rock look om some pieces, but the rounded edges that these gives is something you see typically more in nature. Super sharp rocks often break into more round ones. Though, in fantasty, hell yeah go for the spiky mountain of doom! :) I'll have to see if the dollar tree near me has some stuff like this, they didn't last time I checked, but that's a great point.

      @@StalkeraBg no problem! I'd just say to be sure and pick up stuff that's already fallen off the trees, pulling bark off of trees can possibly damage them, or cause other issues.
      That said, also make sure that you don't need a permit to collect stuff in the forest. If it's on private property, and you have permission from the land owner, then it should be fine. If it's a state or national park/forest, you may need to go to their office and apply for a special use permit to avoid possible fines.

      @Rybonator 5 років тому +1

      Thanks, I appreciate it!
      Not any more than normal gluing to the bases. I would for sure recommend a strong glue like super glue to hold it down. You could even take small clips of paperclips and attach those to the feet of the mini, so that they sink down into the base if you make something that you are super worried about. Like you can see here: encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRLqtPmSFuKyugLWzaksgZYq_Xe1f90gTHHkuIDqGj0pMUKxmEDGQ
      Those are often used in the cork board, but for the other bases, super glue should do you just fine. (You might wanna run your finger across the sand/dirt to get all the loose ones off before you start painting. This will help too. :) )

      if you use the old super glue and baking soda trick it turns into a concrete like substance that you would have to intentionally pull apart for that mini to come off. I use it all the time and they are rock solid.

      @@christophermurray9777 what I do is put a small dab on whatever I want to glue to the surface then stick it down. Immediately dump a bunch of baking soda on it. Then I dump off the excess and use a old cruddy paintbrush to sweep away the loose baking soda and give it a huge blow like I am trying to blow the little pigs house down and it is pretty much rock solid everytime. Clean up with the old paintbrush any left over soda and it is golden ... plus no wait time for it to dry ... it is instant.

    If you paint it anyway wouldn’t t be cheaper to get some washed sand from bunnings or Home Depot or what have you? Small granules and like 20kg for ten bucks.

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator 4 роки тому

      Yes totally! But sometimes the granules are not small enough, OR then you have to worry about storage. That jar that I have will be more than enough for a lifetime of mini basing I imagine haha.

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator 5 років тому +1

      Depends, some figures come with a base, and if so, then yeah I usually do. Some don't and you won't need to do this. Those that have like a "Platform or rock looking thing that they stand on", I usually cut those off as well. Again, your call for what looks best for your figure.
      If not, you can also always just USE that base to do your basing on. Just go about the same process as in the video, but be careful to avoid getting any on the figure itself.

    One trick I learned from playing 40k is to go out to the street in front of your house with a broom and dustpan and sweep the asphalt. You will pick up a bunch of small gravel and rocks you can se for basing. All my Chaos Space Marines were done this way.

    How does one make miniatures?

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator 5 років тому

      Most big manufacturers use software to create the model, create a mold out of the model and use injection molding to finish it off. As a DIY project, you can either Skulpt one out of clay, or buy some pieces from various minis and "kit bash" or combine them into a unique mini. :)

      So warhammer figures are great, and they send a lot of extra parts in their model kits. Check out my floating bases and spiritual weapon video, and you'll see what I mean. But they are pricey. Usually somewhere between 20 - 50$ depending on the group. BUT you get some HIGH quality minis, and a lot of extra stuff :)
