I love you
I really appreciate how you market your own brand. "I like mine, but here's how you can do it cheaper if you like." You don't find that mindset very often. Keep up the great work, Luke.
Honestly, it makes me much more likely to buy GGS knowing that I'm being treated like a hobbyist first and a customer second.
Yeh, u preaching the truth there brotha...
I thought WTF, when you were applying the “luminous” moss effect. But once dry, it looks fantastic. I’m definitely going to be using that.
From the DIY wash videos to this you always knock it out of the park. Thanks for the awsome hobby content.
Thanks luke ill be trying all of these ideas in the near future. Really helpful.
I really like the final look of that moss paint and I had no idea the effect could be created so easily. I have some of your green foam scatter already so I'll definitely be trying it out at some point
I've been using poundshop brown acrylic frame sealant mixed with sand and a little water as a basing texture for a few years now. For stony ground I add some bird grit into the mix; for swamp terrain bases I added some black paint to darken it and some dried herbs to give the impression of rotting vegetation.
What a amazing ideas 💡 thank you that would look amazing as a plague marine base
I've found that egg shells can make for really cool bases as well. I take the egg shells, put them in a jar with a lid (usually it's a Homepride Pasta bake jar 😂) and shake until I get the size I want. Then I mix the egg shell with P.V.A. glue and slap it on the base. Prime, paint. Done. If I'm after a pointy ground effect I wait for the glue to dry a bit then place some larger bits of egg shell where I want them. It's an interesting look.
That's a really cool idea bud!, I can see how it would work.
It's like walking on eggshells with you
@@asafoetidajones8181 😂
I used egg shells to do cracked lava floor. Red/yellow base the paint egg shells black and slap em on. Nice and easy, looks goot too.
If you grind them up and put them in your meals they are a great source of calcium too ;)
A while back, my local Michaels had some "non-slip grit additive" in a jar, for a big discount. I experimented with it in texture paint. It worked pretty well, mixed with PVA and paint. I also added some fairly large grit sand, for added texture. I've mostly done it as texture prior to priming models, but it worked decently well on its own from my experiments.
I've also acquired a kind of snow effect paste ("Snow-Tex" from DecoArt), but I haven't yet tried it out.
My favorite is the moss, I need to do a project where I can use this one. I love making my own products at home, I actually watched your how to make sculptamold the other week and am making a huge batch for a fraction of the cost compared to store bought. Thanks for that!
When someone who sells these products gives you directions bro make your own.... makes me want to buy more of your stuff due to the honesty this shows. Cheers
Yeah really, but I guess he knows there are still people out there who can't afford or just like to DIY all the things.
Great stuff; thanks for sharing. That moss paint looks especially cool.
Luke is honestly the best in the business. Loved it my dude!
Love all these tips. Thanks for sharing
What I love most about your videos is the motivation and inspiration they give me to work on terrain
Love the snow! Some of us do not do gaming models or terrain, but rather Christmas villages. The snow was exactly what I was looking for. Your subs are more than gamers. Thanks so much!
I’ve learnt more from your channel and am just getting in to 1/35 scale model but the tips are absolutely amazing that’s why I was keep popping back to watch your videos and I subscribed
thanks for essentially reuploading the higher production quality of the mud video. i went looking for it about a year ago and couldnt find it and have been guessing on how it was done ever since. cheers!
Basically whatever you do just don't buy citadel and it's fine. Agrellan earth is 7.80€ for 24 ML pot and GSW Mojave Mudcrack is about 5.50€ for 60 ML bottle.
There's very little difference in performance but GSW doesn't chip off as easily so it's little bit better.
Vallejo texture paints are far more durable than citadel ones and come in 200ml tubs which cost about 9.50€. 24ml bottle of Astrogranite is 7.80€ so you get about 8 times more texture paint for same amount of money when buying Vallejo.
Yup I think price, quality, and lack of fuss the Vallejo texture paints have been my go to base paints since before GW even made a texture paint.
This is the answer. Been using the same pot of Vallejo texture paste for like 4 years going now and it cost me 12 bucks. Mixing my own would take way more time and be way less consistent. @@slimjim7411
Love having more tools for the toolbox! Thanks for videos like this!
Always great to see your tips mate
a good looking snow effect is always appreciated. And you have lots of experience in creating snow dioramas!
Awesome tips. Been using the moss recipe for a while, it’s great. Keep up the great content 👍🏼
That moss look amazing, I really want to build some scenery now! Very inspiring!
Great ideas. Thank you.
I haven't done a lot of terrain stuff but wall grout works wonders for building up texture, really easy to work with. That moss idea sounds brilliant, I'll have to give that a go.
Really appreciate your effort and honesty in this video. You didn't hesitate to say "well this is good for terrain, but I'd still use THIS for a model". Helps clear up the value in both products. I really needed this as I'm about to do a display board for Legion and need a mud texture. This'll save me a ton of cash, thanks Luke!
Thanks for the great vid mate. love the moss paint and rust effects.
This was an awesome video. I'm just starting out and this was very helpful. I'm going to try all of these
Yes Luke! This is why I subbed back in the Yoshi in the attic days!
KILLED IT
Thank you for sharing the moss paint recipe! It will be very fun to use this wonderful paint!
Loving that moss paint it looks really good, cheers Luke.
This was very helpful and I like the mud, snow and rust the best. Thanks for sharing this and the effects look great.
Another good one for rust, if you want really extreme rough texture, is superglue + sodium bicarbonate.
Loved all the suggestions and will try them out. I did think your homemade mud could be just a wee tad darker as compared to the shop bought product. Great cost saving suggestions!
All were very useful but the moss is pretty epic and it tones down so well as you pointed out.
Love these techniques. Thanks very much. My favs were the moss paint and the inexpensive rust.
Another great video. Kudos Luke. I love how you KNOW what these products are really made of and how they work so you can replicate them. Not too common I think, so well done to you!
I loved all of them. The moss paint ill be using today for my kruleboyz thank you luke !!
Thanks for braking it down I'll be using all of them. keep up the awesome work you do
I don’t tend to do lots of terrain so shop brought items do me but I love that moss look and will have to give it a go at some point. Great vid❤️❤️❤️
Great results from all of them. The moss is especially nice. Cheers!
Brilliant as always and many thanks for helping the skint gamer.
i liked all of them. Giving people a choise to use what suits them the best. my first atempt on snow (25 years ago ) was plaster an drybrushing it with a white paint as it hardens to much "off-white". Great Job and as allways an entertaining Video.
Thanks for sharing this informative video!
I actually did the snow effect's with what I had kicking around for my chaos marine base's.
I've been looking forward to this!
I liked the moss paint and rust recipe. Thanks for the video.
For rust effects on a board you could probably get thin iron sheet which is dirt cheap and coat it in vinegar and salt mixture. It’s lightweight and you get a real rust effect.
I love the mud, snow and moss paint and i will be making the moss for my Dracula kit...... thanks a lot for the info......
Nice lighting in your video!
Cheers Luke,
I caught the "Wargaming bug" in 1972 and there was no shop bought products then so we had to do what you do , Your GG products are a boon to peeps like me , (Ta muchly for that .) There is one more thing i use , Cigarette ash , mixed with pva gives a good Concrete/Stone finish , but keep that one under ya hat 😉..
Any-hoo ~gud upload and cheers.
Luv~Luv~Luv .
🐺
That moss paint is bloody good looking Luke. I struggle with moss on my scenery but now i know what to do. Loving that rust aswell
Love the moss effect best. The rust looks very effective (though people tend to overdo the orange). I'll probably give the wall filler ground paste a go, I assume you can mix up a whole container with acrylic paint and sand and keep the lid on to keep it from setting, as long as you don't add the PVA?
You can even add the PVA. As long as the lid is on tight, should last for ages. I have some texture paint I made 18+ months ago stored in a clip top yoghurt pot and it’s still fine.
Made a pot up using the wall filler (in the container it came in as was half empty), probably 3 years ago using filler, paint, sand, grit and PVA, and its still fine. It will probably outlast me at this point
Omg I just bought moss texture and you bring us this. Also I've been looking for a diy typhus corrosion for months great vid.
Just in time! I was about to buy some today!
Love the moss paint! Perfect for adding some more colour to my swamp-themed Nighthaunt army.
epic video again love these kinds of tips
The moss paint looks very interesting and will be getting a batch done for my terrain.
This feels like a video from the attic but with better production - the only thing missing was something from poundland🤣.
Really like all of these, but the moss paint wins for me👍
que ashens
I bet that wall filler came from Poundland - that was where I got mine for terrain stuff!
While I'm lazy and usually end up buying these kind of products from AK or Mig, I do love these "how to's".
I just have to remember to use it next time I need texture paint. (-:
I'll keep the mud texture in mind when I run out of the store bought stuff. My dioramas are fairly small so that stuff should last for at least 12-15 of them. A lot of my dioramas show a lot of raw sand or earth. The moss? Love it. I might give the rust a try, but it'd have to be super fine powder mixed in. I go out in the world and collect coffee cans full of dirt from construction sites, and after sieving them, I get a very fine powder. I'll give it a whirl.
Love it... My snow basing stuff has run out, so thos will be great!
I like all of the DIY options over the shop bought with the exception of the snow.
love the moss one. have used a few shop bought which are okay but this is getting a test soon :)
Mate great tips i love your version of the snow i am gonna give that a go. I have subscribed and will keep watching thank you for the videos.
layered roof slate, easy to come across, easy to clean and break, adds great layers
Cool vid. Must say I’m definitely a fan of the Golden products you showed inside the Skillshare section. Their texture mediums are truly amazing. However, one thing which always amazes me is how just the slush from my washed paint brushes, either with a little gesso or matte medium also gives the most amazing effects. With water added suddenly you have amazing pin washes for scraps. And so indeed we can go and on and on. Definitely will try the eggshells I saw mentioned further up in the comments. So, yes, got some favorites, but simple screwing around and experimenting is indeed the utmost favorite of ‘m all. Thanks 🙏 for sharing.
A while back I made some Krampus themed minis and it reminded me of that Viking ship, so glad I remembered how to DIY the snow effect! Clue, white paint and baking powder in my case. Looked pretty good.
"Texture" and "Dry" are a complete waste of money. Mainly because they DRY up... If only I had used them up by then. An empty pot is usually an indicator of a good paint. Quite annoying when products are made and sold not to last... I have coffee beans that have been fresh longer. The GW pots are not tight enough by far.
You could always swap bottles. I put all of my "normal" citadel paints into empty MiG dropper bottles. I've just started experimenting with the terrain stuff, but you could use things like small mustard jars or similar to keep them from drying out.
i found at my local dollar store bags of sand and moss in the planters section and with a bit of paint and glue you can create some good scenes!
Now the Rust and Moss effects are epic and will use that technique on my next project.
The moss one is a game changer for me! Been wanting to do some deep dark mossy forest terrain so this will be very useful 👍
These are awesome
You have a truly amazing talent to bring out a video of exactly what I'm looking for as just decided to start designing my own bases thank you geek gaming scenics. But I would like to share a personal base hack I have found... cable ties can create a amazing industrial style drain for grimdark models that with some sanded spure or cut up lolly stick or Chinese tub makes a really unique style glass or with a water down acrylic can create a really cool stained glass effect I hope these might help you with ideas as well thank you between you with your bases 52 miniatures with his unique style. And so many more names I wish to mention but when it comes to bases and amazing cost saving hints help everyone thank you for all your hard work 😊
I think the mud mix would suit the most number of uses over all but I intend to try them all! Great stuff!!
Very helpful.
I can safely say I'll be using all of these over the course of my hobby life. But more importantly and most currently I'll be using the snow one as I plan on making a small board for Star Wars Legion to represent Hoth, the ice world.
The moss is a great idea, I might do that myself
Liked the moss effects 👌
Good video always appreciate money saving tips ( i use ash to bulk out filler/grout & stale cinnamon or real rust for rust & cat litter for stone or smashed up for dust & cheap trade pva sealer seems to sub for mod podge & cheapest pale emulsion coloured with craft paint or ink saves some money too ) cheers
Great INFO Video Luke! I kinda Needed this one in my favs to come back on for some of my own builds. Your a good teacher! THANKS MAN Hope all is well with you and your family! BE SAFE! MOSS IS MINE! LOVE THE LOOK!!
I have used all of them slightly different recipes but I love the snow and the rust
I’ve been making snow like this for a while. Works great. I use a ton of it because, for some reason I always gravitate towards frosty games and factions (Frostgrave and AoS Beastclaw Raiders). Not sure why I never considered moss paint before. But I’m probably going to go mix some up right now lol
Honestly I've never used any factory made texture paints or coverings. I've always just mixed stuff up. But I've used sand, kitty litter, corn meal, crushed stone, aquarium gravel, rocks and dirt from outside, baking soda, coffee grounds, and anything else that I have ever thought of. And basically mixed it into glue or paint, or both. I've also just put glue on a base and shook stuff on. I've always felt the pre-made texture paints were too expensive for the amount you got. And I'm glad you shared these recipes with us. I'd rather just make my own. Especially since it would be about an hour ordeal to drive my closest shop that carries pre-made texture paints, buy it, and drive back. Most of the stuff I use can be purchased at a closer shop in 10 minutes if I don't screw around looking at other stuff in the shop. And can be bought cheaper and in bigger abundance.
Can't wait to try the DIY moss.
That moss paint looks great.
awesome knowledge
Personally like the rust option mate as I have never thought of making that myself! taken up your offer too bro!
cheers
Matt
Cracking tutorial! I love these vids. Still use your original nuln oil equivalent.
These look great! Definitely like the look of the moss. The only paint I use is Games Workshop Texture paint Agrellan Earth. I wonder if there is an alternative to that? It dries and creates cracks like a desert planet.
Oooh I’ve got to try that moss thing
The best moss and lichen substitute I’ve ever used is matcha tea sealed with PVA glue
For rust I use alcohol ink. Start with yellow then add orange, then a red brown, and finally a very dark brown. Just layer then and do it while they are still tacky so they mix a bit.
For rust effect I have found that a layer of a dark red brown dry pigment with a lighter orange dry pigments gives great results. And it's wicked cheap if you buy some artist pastel chalk sticks. Like $25 for every color you could ever need and the sandpaper to process it down to a powder.
I was genuinely surprised by how good the moss effect worked!
Cool, all effects look super nice.
Have you ever considered putting those types of products in sealed ziplock bags? The ones where you cut the top off but it can be closed after that.
I’ll use all of them great video Luke
i really want to try that moss technique !
I like to use Tea leaves from a used Tea bag, pva and a little green paint to make Moss.
Good stuff as always, Interesting video. My challenge to you is to make a home made texture paste that cracks like some o the GW ones (martian iron earth etc). I've had limited success with Calcium Bentonite.
Try coffee grounds, pva, a bit of water, and maybe some craft paint if you want to try and color it a bit. If you play with the mix the material separates as it dries and cracks. Sort of gives a cracked lava field look.
I would use all the homemade versions, simply because they are cheaper and can be easily customised to suit my project. Love to see you doing more home made alternatives, it's what got me watching you years ago.
I recenently made about 50 bucks worth of green Stirland Mud from sand, cheap craft paint, and ready made drywall compound for like... a bucks worth of material. All thanks to an old video you made Luke. Thank you for saving me $$$
