we need a whole hobby cheating series on how to make different bases
I know about your desert and icesheet videos. this could be a nice series...
@ I second this, basing is what I most love about the hobby
Yes please! Different ideas is so interesting to watch come to life.
Agreed. Basing is the hardest part for me.
I have a lot of different basing videos, sounds like a playlist is in order.
That “jungle plant” could also be a painted as a giant flower.
Absolutely, I didn't do much in the way of big flowers with this army, but that would be absolutely doable and look great.
My go to for jungle or forest floors I stole form Squidmar. Coconut fiber pellets. Crush them up and instant dirt floor. Super cheap on ebay. Or some cheap herbs from walmart. Italian seasoning is a pretty good color mix for leaf debris.
Good stuff for sure and more good options, love it.
Everything you do is inspirational, sir. Whether it's something I actually want to work on or not, you give me ideas that I can apply to the hobby. I can't thank you enough, honestly. Especially during this quarantine.
Thank you, that means a great deal and I am always happy to help.
Steaming fun tutorial Vince! My favorite basing vid yet. Love the exhibit of various materials but especially how they were transformed into Jungle life!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'd really love to see a tutorial for how you did the jungle ruins/stones! I've seen your reply to someone else's comment, but they look fantastic and a video tutorial would really help lots of us.
Noted!
@@VinceVenturella I definitely echo OPs comment: the stone coloration and mossy wash combo is great and a look that I would love to replicate on some smaller jungle pieces!
As Always, amazing tutorial! I started my Seraphon bases with Coconut Fiber soil and 3D Printed ruins, but you made really good ideas to improve them with other materials. Also, I was thinking on placing the tufts and the plants at the end, but I changed my mind. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Love these concepts so hard. Looks like my Kings of War Nature army has a basing scheme. Thanks for all you do, Vince!
Awesome, happy to help. :)
Thanks, with the new seraphon box set it's time to get creative with some jungle bases
Absolutely!
Just came across your videos and wanted to thank you for them. Such a broad spectrum of subjects and perfectly explained, keep it up!
Glad you like them! Glad to have you on the hobby journey and always happy to help. :)
I love these kinds of hobby cheating videos, I’d be interested to see your take on an industrial/forgeworld style base
Great idea, I will add it to the list. :)
I _do_ actually use tea leaves, as standard. Your normal tea bag has really finely chopped leaves which make great base texture; glue it down and seal it, and it's as good as fine sand. And one bag, ripped open and left to dry, gives you enough material to cover _loads_ of bases. I'm currently using them on Termagant bases for a kind of "razed earth" texture.
Yeah, there are so many different uses of textures and types of teas that make it wonderful as a basing material for all sorts of purposes.
That is a fantastic base, Vince! I do love basing as it adds an such extra level to a miniature. I will have to look at painting my foliage more!
Happy to help as always. :)
I can’t wait to try this! I’m going to use my new green stuff rollers when they come in too!🧡
Awesome, you're going to have a great time. :)
Exactly what I need this week. Thanks Vince! Perfect tutorial👍🏼
Happy to help!
Fantastic, my friend! I’m definitely using this for my Seraphon and Catachans. Thank you for such a detailed tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
Great stuff as always Vince! A base like that could really make a model or an army stand out! Will pass this around.
Excellent, happy to help as always. :)
Thanks Vince! Great video. You always manage to make 5 star techniques really accessible.
Happy to help!
Awesome exactly what I was looking for, for my Genestealer Cultists
Excellent, always happy to help.
Wow! Those really are some great looking bases! Thanks for sharing your process with us.
Glad you like them! :)
10:59 Hey Vince, I have a dropper bottle full of a PVA, water and isopropyl mix. It's much easier to squeeze some over flock and rocks and not have to worry about picking any up.
Sounds very handy, do you have a rough guide on how many parts per ingredient or tips on how to gauge the consistency when mixing it up? =)
@@PatchedUpMusic Luke Towan AKA Boulder Creek Railroad should have that info on his channel somewhere. If I remember correctly his scenic glue mix, which is 1 part glue, 3-4 parts water, and a few drops of dish soap.
Nice, I'll give that mix a try. :)
@@PatchedUpMusic I used 1:1:1, I don't think it matters much
@@VinceVenturella The original comment is close to what train modelers use. They use the same PVA and water mixture, but first they use a thing called wet water which is 50/50 Water and alcohol. By using this first it breaks the surface tension so you don't pickup rocks and whatnot when put on the glue. Also speeds up the drying time a lot.
THANK YOU VINCE i've been looking for a tutorial on that kind of jungle base for YEARS
Excellent, happy to help as always. :)
Man I just started building and painting my Start Collecting Seraphom Box yesterday! This just came on point :D
That's awesome! Always happy to help.
Unbelievable, whenever I have a topic and search for it: there is a Hobby Cheating video about it. I thought I comment, to show that even the old stuff is still being looked at!
That’s the goal! :)
You do great videos in general Vince, but these basing ones are some of my favorites. I love doing gritty, messy bases of different types. I did a Necron kill team on Mars bases inspired by that other basing video. I like this one too, will have to find something to try it out on!
Ever thought about trying some alien landscapes with blues, purples, crystals, things like that? Would love to see your take on it.
Anyway great vid, thanks
Thank you, these are wonderful fun to do. I will add the alien landscape to the list.
Lots of inspiration here, even if I flinched when you set down your superglue without capping it tightly first. Also, I was wanting the plastic plant to be more firmly moored to the base. Nonetheless, I'll be incorporating many of your ideas into my jungle bases. Thanks!
Always happy to help. :)
Such a great vid. We love you Vince, thanks for everything
Thank you, happy to help as always. :)
Awesome vid as always, fantastic tips for making some great Seraphon bases :)
Glad you like them!
Excellent work. Thanks for sharing. Would love to see how you create a cave inspired base.
Excellent, I will add that to the list, great idea.
thanks for your help ! When I see guides like this I start to understand my mistakes and correct them. +1 LIKE !
Glad it helped!
I didn't know about using tea leaves in basing they are great. Thank you.
You’re welcome 😊
These look really good!
I am very tempted to use these for my Heresy Alpha Legion project.
Go for it!
Nice bases Vince! Working up an epic Jungle base myself ATM. This will help, thanks.
Glad to help!
Very nicely done and atmospheric, congrats!
Thank you, always happy to help. :)
I'm late to the party but that's an awesome base !! And easy to do. Excellent idea, thx for the great tip !!
No problem 👍
Dammit Vince! This makes me want to rebase all of my SW:Legion models to an improved Scarif theme!
Awesome, it's a lot of fun to make these bases honestly. Glad it was inspiring. :)
Very eye catching. Love it. Thank you for this tutorial
Thanks for watching! Always happy to help.
Fun and informative vid Vince. Only thing was I kept having Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie" run through my head while watching !
I dig that, if I could have it in the actual background I would, but the copyright bots would be all over me. :)
Amazing as always. I would love to see one on rocky snow terrain.
Well you're in luck - ua-cam.com/video/bMHTPfAvi_M/v-deo.html
Also, I have a playlist dedicated to bases - ua-cam.com/play/PLcdsbwBroEmCHEnhbqM2E-TmREz12mEF2.html
@@VinceVenturella Hey thanks Vince! I was actually going through your page to find more bases after watching this video and got side tracked by one of your other videos. The links will be very helpful...you have so much great info to watch!
Vince decided to finally stoop to my level and use some of them custom forked brushes I make :D
Perfect for all those pigment needs. ;)
Awesome basing tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
this really helped me with my school art project thank u sm
Fantastic! Always happy to help. :)
This basing tutorial is amazing! I've had my Seraphon/Lizardmen with blank bases for about five years waiting for the perfect idea and you come out with this magic. Love it! One question though: Do you treat the tea at all or just take it straight out of the packet/tin? TIA!
Basically straight out of the packet (or tin), once it's primed, painted and varnished, it's pretty much sealed and you're good.
yo men this tutorial was exactly what i was looking for, 12 out 10 good work vince, like+coment+ new sub!
Wonderful! Always happy to help and glad to have you along on the hobby journey. :)
Really inspiring. I want to make jungle base now.
Awesome, always happy to help. :)
Billous green for the win!! (I had one of those back in the days when I didn't know how to paint. Oh wait - I still don't, ha ha.) Thanks Vince! These look very good and very fun to create indeed. One quick question: would you have ideas of examples of products for exotic flowers (or means to create them, if we can gte by with, say, just a crazy bit of pink or firey orange?)
Check out Bad Squiddo Games and Gamer's Grass, they both have some really excellent tufts.
Dried herbs and spices also work well for forest/jungle floor scatter.
Yes it does! I have raided the herb cabinet a few times as well.
Very cool! I struggle with contrast on minis in general but I can never seem to be able to match the contrast between the mini and the base. The suggestion about going higher with the bright green makes a ton of sense and darkens out the other parts of the base. Thank you for sharing.
One question though: won’t adding the dry pigments take away some of the contrast? Thanks again for posting.
Yes it will, that's why you want to be careful with it. It adds contrast of color (hue) and that can often be just as important as contrast of value.
Love the thought of aquarium plants... may need to hit the pet store.
Yep, it's a great source. :)
Fantastic tutorial. Thanks for making it.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome! That would be perfect for my Catachans that I dug up for the first time in 10 years! ...if only I hadn't based them already T-T
Well, there are always future Catachans. ;)
I really enjoy watching your tutorials, especially on basing.
I have a question: How would you go about recreating the fungus that grows on trees in a marsh or swamp?
It's tough, if we're talking about moss, then just PVA glue and some green sprinkle ground cover (like for train boards). If you're talking the mushrooms, that's tougher, as I'm not sure how I would recreate those, but I believe that you can buy them in pre-fabricated packs.
Love your stuff as always. Hobby On everyone
Thank you, happy to help as always. :)
This will be perfect for basing my ogors. Though it would probably behoove me to remove the models first.
Excellent, happy to help as always (and yes, it's easier without the models on there for sure).
Looks amazing as always! Would you mind sharing how you painted the stones for the ruins so nicely? Thank you!
Interested too. They look great!
It was pretty simple honestly, just a bunch of wet blending with ivory, browns and whites, then some stippling over the top. The key with stones and items like that is to create a direction to the lighting for visual interest and just be fairly random. I honestly just slap paint, stippling, glazing, washing, stippling again until it looks how I want it to look.
Thank you!
This was The best tutorial video I have seen! Really amazing. I also was thinking of painting some tufts, but never did that as I thought it will look wrong.
My I ask, on the stegadon base, you had those pine looking tufts, what company sells them?
They came from Gamer's Grass, great source of cool basing supplies.
@@VinceVenturella thanks you)
I did some cool jungle bases once.. it’s just it was a sandy part of the jungle with no discernible features. Seriously tho.. great tutorial as always.
Thank you, happy to help as always. :)
Going to be using this to help make some neat bases for my Seraphone but I am having trouble finding stone bits like you show off at 4:19
Thought it would be a quick search but mostly just getting already modeled bases and not stone bits I can use.
That rubble is from Gamer's Grass. :)
Very nice looking bases.
Thanks 👍
Really good video! Inspired me a lot and have me a good time :)
Also instant sub :D
Glad you enjoyed it! And glad to have you along on the hobby journey. :)
I want to recommend vallejo (correction edit: AK Interactive) neutral textures. I was contemplating a lot which texture base colors to get (Do i need simple dirt? Do I need mars colored earth? Do I need deserts???) and then found the neutrals. It's texture paste in white, so you can easily mix in any browns or reds or yellows you want and get a whole range of basing texture colors.
Yep, I use the vallejo basing paste all the time, love it, I even have a review of it. :)
@@VinceVenturella gotta look for that for some additional ideas.
@@VinceVenturella I realized I made a mistake after looking at your video. I have AK Interactive, not Vallejo.
You got the Grey Pumice there, which looks more stone like, which is also great, but the ones I'm talking about are basically stirland mud and battlemire, but colorless. Rough terrain and Earth.
ak-interactive.com/product/neutral-texture-for-rough-terrain-250ml-base-product/
ak-interactive.com/product/terrains-neutral-texture-for-earth-250ml-base-product/
The great thing is that you can just mix the colors in before even applying it and also depending on how much water you use, you can get more muddy effect or not.
Those look super awesome! Going to try that for my upcoming Seraphon army. How do you actually go about attaching the models to the bases? Do you just glue them on there with superglue? If so - how do you handle the height difference with all the mud and moss and stones and whatnot? Or do you normally glue the miniatures onto the bases before adding the jungle stuff?
So onc the bases are done, I use Loc-Tite Ultra Control Gel Glue and I attach them on there, that glue is really strong and generally holds them without issue.
I'd love to see how you would corrupt this for garden of nurgle, or whether you would go in a different direction entirely. The bubbling ooze bases are great but how about something in the middle?
I think you nailed it with in the middle. I would remove a lot of stone of the old ruins and instead I would make some small bubbling pools. I think that's your best way to go.
some good creeping vines could look sweet like the veins through the jungle floor
Absolutely, there are so many other cool items you could include. :)
Awesome job! 👍🏻
Thanks! Always happy to help. :)
Great tutorial, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I love your basing videos
Thank you, happy to help as always. :)
Great tutorial using simple stuff to produce nice, realistic looking jungle terrain but I can't believe someone down voted this vid!!
Glad you liked it! (I never worry about a thumbs down, just comes with the territory). ;)
Best jungle base on youtube :) Your mdf blank that you start with, do you sand the rim before you start working or did you acquire them w/ a smooth rim? I've had trouble with the wood absorbing the paint for the black rim if i sand the rough edge.
Didn't sand these down. The ones I get from Gale Force Nine are actually pretty solid and don't have much texture. :)
Hi, really enjoyed your tutorial. Like the idea of highlighting the leaves around the edges. I'm going to have to go back to some of mine and highlight them as they would look sooo much better. Question: where do you get your artificial plants from for your bases as the leavy ones look really good ? Cheers, Rick the Bulldog
Glad it was helpful! These were from a pet store and fish tank decorations.
Great video - do you happen to know the flower tufts you used or have any you’d recommend?
Yep, these were from Gamer's Grass, they have some great tufts.
Amazing bases, Vince. Thanks for sharing.
Can I ask how you stuck your models to these bases? I want to do them but worry that the models will sort of just sit on top of all the texture and look odd, as apposed to being bedded into it as if it belongs (if that makes sense?)
Just good old fashioned super glue, but pins for larger models.
More love for basing!
Bass... er.. base...the final frontier
All the Base and the Bass.
Awesome tutorial, thanks a lot Vince! I love getting inspiration from your videos. What colors did you use to prime the base?
Just black and Ivory/white.
@@VinceVenturella Thank you!
Hey, great video. Where do you get the rocks, piller and rubble bits from?
They are from Gamer's Grass, great rubble and stones.
That random box of stone floor stuff. Where is that from. That looked awesome I want
Gamer's Grass.
Thanks for the great video. I'm trying to come up with a building scheme for Slaves to Darkness mountain-icy bases. Any tips or ideas on how you would do it?
Well, if you look at my realistic snow basing (I think it's like 91 or 92), you will see a mountainous scheme I did for an army. It's a matter of some verticality changes, lots of different sizes of rock grit, and working other colors into the rocks. Hope that helps and that video gives you some ideas.
@@VinceVenturella much appreciated. forgot you did an updated snow video!
Thank you for this, your videos have really helped me figure a lot of things out in the hobby. I am using this for some Lizardmen basing, but I've ran into a problem.. the primer flakes off the plastic aquarium plants I bought.. since they're not rigid, any minor force, even a strong breath, will cause them to bend and crack.
What do you recommend, please? Could I get away with simply washing them? Or paint them without priming? These will be handled so I can't get away with just locking them in a display cabinet for the rest of time :(
Interesting, you may just want to try a wash and drybrush, or varnish them straight, then apply the wash and drybrush.
@@VinceVenturella Thank you! I will try these :)
Thanks for this video VincyV
Always happy to help and I love that nickname. :)
absolutely love this, i just ordered the stegadon and seraphon start collecting kits, cant wait to give this a try, question though, where did you get the ruins from? they look nice
Gamer's Grass
Thanks :) will check them out
Been looking at these videos for some ideas and inspiration for my T'au jungle theme army.
But how would you go about basing these with 28mm troop bases Vince?
I've made a few test pieces, but it feels like if I put any plants on they will cover the model up, does it matter if it covers a troop?
Or is it a better idea to just implement a tuft and some moss around the base as "plant life"?
Thanks again for all the great content!
So the small base I was working on was a 32mm base for a single character of the size you are describing. Wht I tend to do on the small bases is have less plants, You can cover a foot or something like that and that is fine, it can feel cool. I would avoid covering any more than the lower legs. When the larger bases are mixed in, the feeling will still come across when they have more plants and biger pieces.
@@VinceVenturella Cool, then I shall continue with my bases! Thanks again Vince!
We both did jungle base videos this week, ESP Vince
Great minds think alike. :)
So after finishing the bases what glue do you use to attach the minis? I’ve had issues with my super glue frosting
Loctite Ultra Control Gel Superglue. You sometimes get a little frosting, but I just go back and touch it up with some darker paint or pigment at the end.
gaaa, love that purple brown with the green!
Yeah, it really sets it off. :)
Vince at 13:30 you 're saying you found these particular plants from an aquarium scenery or somethin but can't remember where. Thing is, all the companies I 've searched with similar sizes and shape which is the perfect one for jungles are really really REALLY expensive. Like 6euros for 9 of these or somethin and for somebody like me with a huge Seraphon collection just doesn't worth it. Any chance you could recall where were they from or something similar with this particular shape ?
Thanks again for the super interesting content you create for us ( not just hobby cheating series, but discussing about the meta and so on )
So I found them in some bags at a big rummage sale with other fish tank stuff, so I doubt you'll be able to source them the same. :) - That being said, that does seem high priced, it might be worth just hitting a local pet store and seeing what they have.
Hey Vince, I'm planning on using your "paint/shade your tufts" advice. However, I'm gonna use my alien gamer grass that looks exotic. I'm afraid if I paint them they'll lose their weird looks. They're blue, or pink and neon purple. What kinda wash should I use?
I answered in the other comment, but you can either use some of that color shade (for example, some blue wash) or mix some of that into the darker color like Agrax and apply to the heart of the tufts and the ground around it.
What was that box of bits with the rocks and downed pillars? Also where did you find the awesome fence piece with the skulls?
I’ve looked in your transcript and watched this video 3 time I can’t hear good so I must be missing it.
Fence piece is from the original warcry terrain. Rocks and pillars were resin pieces from Gamers Grass.
Would I be correct in assuming that you zenithel primed the base with white primer?
Yes, German Panzer Grey and then white.
This is so good - anywhere we can see some models on them?
Yep, this video right here - ua-cam.com/video/R60_DCsmxb0/v-deo.html
Where i can buy those amazing temple bits, been looking for them like crazy but cant find something similar
They are from Gamer's Grass. :)
Hey man, what did you use for the cobblestones on the larger bases? Wanting to do this for my seraphon!
Stones from Gamer's Grass. Great stuff.
Where did you find the plastic plants bag? having trouble finding stuff like that
Randomly in a big bin at a convention for like a $1, but it's just cheap aquarium terrain from a pet store really.
I'm hoping to follow this tutorial for a new army I'm painting up, but I don't have an airbrush. Is it possible to prime this base as you do via brush or maybe rattle can? How would you go about a similar priming approach with a brush?
Sure, you could do all this with just drybrushing, heavy dry brushing and stippling for a good effect. :)
For the ruins did you just hit them with a greyish brown in the airbrush beforehand? Great video!
No, they were just zenithaled and then I did a bunch of stippling, glazing and pigment mashing in a very random way until I had something I liked. :)
@@VinceVenturella Thanks!!
How durable are tufts and the like, for gaming bases. Always afraid to use them due to concerns of them pulling off over time.
Honestly, quite durable. Once they are attached, they are going to pretty much be there forever, I don't know that I have ever had one come off.
I didn't know that aquarium terrain was so good. I've seen horrendous big plastic leaved plants from aquariums used by hobbyists that do not look right
Yep, the key is the smaller items and painting them. :)
one minute in and already have my first question... where are you getting those 'sad little bases' ? :)
The little MDF base? I get them from Gale Force Nine at conventions, you can grab a big container of tons of them for like $20
Is the Gel Locktight glue a superglue or replacement for standard superglue? Asking because I am hoping to find a new superglue that is better than my current one (Warcradle, not a big fan of it). Is there a superglue that is as much better than the compeition as the Tamaya Extra Thin is over other plastic glues?
Yep, it's a superglue, it's wonderful.
I have another question.
I bought a tuft meadow set, which has 4 types of grass colors for a beautiful look. If I use wash, won't it make them all look the same? I don't want it to look like I just dropped them off the paper onto the base either. Should I use all different washes or what should I do?
Yeah, you can mix some different washes, they will still very much feel different (for example if you have pale white tufts versus bright green, some weak agrax earthshade isn't going to change them dramatically, it's just going to draw them together). If you have very alien colors, like the pink/blue you can still use the darker shades and draw them into the earth, but you can also just combine them with some darker shades of that color (for example, using dark blue wash and getting some of that on the ground around), the key isn't just the tufts, but the ground around it to tie them together.
@@VinceVenturella thank you
Have you tried used tea leafs that have then dried? Cuz... I wanna drink my tea, but I also want basing material >.>
Yes, all of these are dried out. Works perfectly.
