**IMPORTANT!! Keep in mind this was only Part 1 and Part 2 will probably be Adam getting mended up and ultimately fighting SkeleGod! And PLZ PLZ no hate for LGBTQ in the comments! I've had to delete a few that were really hateful. I read online that Teela had a secret with a story arc for Teela being a lesbian with some evidence from the series (NOT that that's a bad thing at all... come on!) So I was sort of in the mindset this was true and I found it an odd move to take an established 80s Teela character to make her sexual preference an issue? Just because Teela is a strong woman and has a girlfriend doesn't make her gay of course, but I was unfortunately in the mindset that her being a lesbian was a fact and her love story would progress in part 2. AGAIN I have nothing but love for the LGBTQ community so I really hope my review was not taken the wrong way! Please no hate anyone! ❤️
That's been the problem. Hate. I liked your review. Very fair. I loved Teela. And Evil-Lynn. They both looked jacked, but it didn't bug me. She's a warrior. But I see your point. My only real problem was how she was mad about Adams secret over him being dead and how Man -at Arms not helping. I'm 41, so if this was geared towards me then it worked. We got an epic battle and then something new. I'm okay with that. But, your review is the best I've seen so far.
I also heard about Teela having a secret herself and later revealing she is part of the pride community but not in a direct way ..by saying no to marrying prince Adam in the end and going off with Andra to have adventures and quest around eternia.
No you did not come across the wrong way, yes it is odd that Smith does seem to lean heavy into Teela's sexual preference and seem to change it, as some versions have Teela marry Adam/or King He-man and have a son.
However it's in vogue to swap characters preference's in today's age if it is the right thing to do or not is not my place to say.
Tbh you could also just take Teela and Andra's relationship as that of sisters, with Teela looking out for her "little sister".
Whichever way it is meant to be, there is no call for hate for the LGBTQ community , we are all fans and human beings and that is all that should matter. 💗
I heard she is going to deny he-man at the end to enforce the whole I don’t need a man thing. We know you don’t mean any hate Laura you don’t have to explain
Great discussion! Enjoy many of your videos! As a Christian, I definitely have different beliefs than the LGBTQ stuff (if that’s what the Teela stuff was going for), I do love all people as does God, and we pray all will ask God for His salvation immediately! Thanks and God Bless! 🙂😀❤️✝️🙏👍🏻
Teela's characterization was just ungodly awful. She went from a powerful beautiful female to a whiny, self serving sociopath. Everything is about me. You died for all of eternia but we're talking about ME here.
This is about as unheroic and down right EVIL characterization I've ever seen.
Whatever that thing is. It sure as hell isn't Teela.
I think Teela spends too much time on what's left of Tumblr and Twitter.
She s Teela after graduating gender studies
So Teela became a Tik Tok celebrity?
Adam: "I DIED!"
Teela" "Yeah? And the rest of us had to live with it"
I wanted to punch her so hard for that lol
It's actually worse. He-Man's sacrifice meant nothing, all he did was slow the death down. And what does Reeeeee-la do when confronted with the death of the UNIVERSE? Makes it all about her.
Everyone: Um, Magic and therefore Eternia and therefore the universe are ending...
Teela: "What about MEeeeEeEeeEeeeEeeEE???!!!!"
Can't imagine Teela's bitching in part 2 when she finds out that the Sorceress is her mother...
A Hero for the entitled generation
@@basteagui Not true, this type of shitty written Characters always existed in Shows.

@@qasimahmed3301 true, but this is actually what critics used to criticize for the last decade, while they suddenly love it here...
It's just a shitty 80s male char in a 10s female figure.
It’s like making a Charlie’s angels movie , then killing off the angels in the first scene and having the rest of the movie about Bosley.

To me, the modern stereotypical "strong female character" is just as sexist as the old "damsel in distress" trope... and its a little weird that dudes still seem to be the ones creating these characters. Newsflash: you can have a female hero that's still feminine, guys... they don't have to be some idealized masculine, superpowered creature to be strong and compelling.
Exactly! You don’t need to remove female characteristics for a female character to be awesome. Also! What their way of telling this story tells me is: they want to write about their idea of a strong female character, but has no faith she could pull off her own story without being dressed in the mantle taken from a man. This show insults in so many ways.
Exactly!!! It seems these male creators think the only way to make a strong female character is to make her a dude-bro.
Yeah Mary Sue means very boring overpowered characters.
Its all Hollywood is writing anymore.
How is the damsel in distress sexist? Some things are made to cater to certain people. Or are you actually consistent and believe it's sexist the other way around too?
There were actually amazingly likeable and strong female characters in the 80ies.
Think Sarah Connor from Terminator. Or Ellen Ripley from Aliens. Or well... Teela from He-Man. Back in the day that is. Not that version.
You missed the part where teela has a hissy fit in front of a grieving King and queen
Yeah really! This was one of the stranger parts and that's saying something. Very dismissive of parental grief but I'm supposed to buy Teela's 180 as more believable?
@@DougVehovec And Sarah Michelle Geller's voice acting made her sound all the more like a teenage brat. Teela's voice should sound more mature. (A voice like Elizabeth Olsen comes to mind.)
That to me was the only part I didnt really like, or outright hated. She was really unlikable and selfish in that sequence.
That was the point I realized what was about to happen, stopped watching and just read the rest of the plot on wikipedia.
Imagine going to a friend’s funeral. You see their parents silently crying beside the grave. Then you start bitching to the crowd about how they all suck cause your friend kept a secret from you of having a part time job. That’s essentially Teela’s reaction
They weren't sure that giving Teela a girlfriend was enough of a hint to let people know Teela was a lesbian so they decided to give her that haircut just to make sure.
Why do you think she is gay? She looked closer to Adam than to her..
Wait that was her lover? Thought they were just friends......
Lol
It depends on where you're from I guess, I know plenty of people with that cut that aren't homosexual, but it is a fad that's fading faster than JNCO
They really love stereotyping the LBGT community.
You got it on point: the target audience of this series is Kevin Smith.
This is true lol
It makes me sad because I love Kevin Smith movies and I wanted to like this. He's lost his flare.
Pretty sure he had to do it, otherwise he'd be kicked out of hollywood.
@@ad8554 You’ll change your opinion on him when you find out what he did to Black Cat and Batman in several dreadful stories he told.
I'm female, a He-Man fan, watched the originals when I was younger and I'm just as annoyed. Why does every female character have to be transformed into stroppy, jaded huge butch lesbians for them to be considered main character material? Can't we just have a properly written female character for once?
I'm all for characters being explored and built upon, but changing the core fundamentals of a character to push an agenda rubs me up the wrong way. Pandering basically.
Ur right
Ur right
Riiiiiight, women can be feminine and strong at the same time. So frustrating
This is what happens when SJWs get too much power. See the Star Wars sequel trilogy for reference.
The new master of universe is better in my opinion, but this one i watch for the action only. Idk why they wanted to be philosophical with a kidshow. I am an adult but i think when i watch a show like he man i want it to be engaging and be silly while at time had scene which are intense.
The way they made teela’s character so self-centred to the point where even after her best friend died the only thing bothering her was a secret that she didn’t know and kept whining about it even to his parents who just lost a son?? and the ego boost continued in every episode it was laughable.
Right cuz Tony stark didn’t try to fight Steve’s friend when steve kept a secret, not recognizing how messed up it must have been for Bucky to be brainwashed? She’s grieving for her friend, that’s why she’s mad..literally she says this to Adam later! Dummy.
Women!
@@andrewtamez6067 so that makes it ok to snap at Adam's parents???
@@andrewtamez6067 the difference is that Civil War portrayed that as a bad thing that has negative consequences. Here, Teela is depicted as justified in-universe and that rubs the audience the wrong way.
And yes, 'the later.' When she whines about suffering the loss of her best friend, to her best friend who had to sacrifice his life to save everyone.
Suppose it would have been fine if He Man's real identity was a nobody to Teela? The death of someone important to the Queen and King doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is that Teela got hurt grieving for him.
A character's right or wrong being determined by what hurts them and not others is what leads them do villainous things in good writing. Or give them a writer-approved protagonist-centred morality in bad writing and hope the audience doesn't notice.
@@andrewtamez6067 Bucky killed his parents dumbass, of course he was mad Steve kept it from him. Don't act like that's the same 🤣
You know that feeling of confusion when your girlfriend is mad at you for nothing?
That's what it's like watching this show.
I have never even had a girlfriend, but that seems to fit perfectly.
I think you should listen to your girlfriend better.
Heman aside, she's probably mad for a reason.
Because a lot of fans are mad for nothing?
News flash its really about nothing, your girlfriend is just a bitch. Or whisking anything out of proportion. Like you were looking in a random direction and a woman happened to he over there.
The most absurd aspect of the so-called "strong female characters" like Teela in this series, which we are seeing way too frequently as of late, is that they more often than not simply write into a female some of the terrible human traits that are being often finds in narcisisstic machos.
Also, He-Man has always embodied a positive male role-model: sure, he's strong and buff, but also intelligent, kind-hearted, prone to sacrifice and to avoid using brute force unless strictly necessary. Maybe a too idealistic character, but a much better protagonist than a whiny egotistical person like 2021 Teela (while 80's Teela was still strong but also vety sympathetic).
Respect for those street sharks on your shelf, very cool.
Damn street sharks is good
I always liked streetsharks more than the ninja turtles

did this comment really have to be in dialogue form?
Me: unnecessary.
To me, this series was perfect in both intent and execution... Clearly Kevin Smith's vision implied that Skeletor was gonna be the hero and Teela the villain, which was done flawlessly. I found myself rooting for Skeletor in no time, and the show delivered! They really subverted my expectations!
Not going to lie you had me for a minute 😂🤣😭
Amazing explanation, you just unlocked it for me! Everyone was rooting for the wrong person the whole time, Skeletor was the hero! I love it!

I appreciate how even though you had your own perspective and it was interesting to you, you still recognized the reality of the core audience and their tastes and that they were mislead. Thanks for that. Very fair and balanced
Yes, with much chagrin I acknowledge that her review was fair and balanced but doggone it I wanted to come in and hear all about that dumpsta fiya! It's ok...I made my own review for friends and fans of the series just didn't publish it because heaven forbid I get canceled before I'm even a thing.

Someone can tell me which is the translation for porsilapongo please?
If you had told the 5 year old me, "in about 30 years you are going to love 'My Little Pony' and hate 'He-Man'", I wouldn't have believed it. But here we are.
MLP is surprisingly hilarious.
LMFAO!!!
Facts
The very first show was actually good (the one with the token human girls), they just went all in on girly stuff after the movie. While show demos were evenly split only boys went to see GI joe, only girls went to see mlp, so they dropped the adventure elements from mlp after, totes sad.
Some of the writers moved to Disney Afternoon after, you can see a lot of the same story beats in, say, Aladdin as in the Catrina and Somnambula episodes, for instance
Not really a fan of MLP but I do find the songs catchy.
Bait and switch aside, was Teela a cool and intriguing character or not? Even knowing beforehand that she'd be the main character... how would one feel about her? I think she was written unsympathetically and no demographic would have truly loved her as she's seen in these 5 episodes
*Very* unsympathetically. If a male character had her personality, it would have been the epitome of toxic masculinity.
She's supposed to be military, but has no concept of operational security (secrets are meant to keep people safe), respecting the chain of command or discipline (let's yell at the king and queen who just lost their son).
She is unbearable. Incredibly irritable, angry, and self-centered all the time with zero sympathy for anyone, which is how social justice writers show womyn are so powerful along with emasculating, marginalizing, or killing off all the male characters. I was surprised at how many similarities it had with the video game The Last of Us: Part II, particularly how they kill off so many of the key male characters and add an angry roidmonster psychopath female protagonist with almost no redeeming qualities to replace them.
@@chrisnln1619 I mean not to mention (and I know this is very heavy speculation) considering she was going to be man-at-arms with (or taking over for him I can't remember) her father, one would assume that along with the prestige of that title would also come the knowledge of the secret identity of He-Man
Yea I'm confused with the whole concept of making it a Teela show instead of a He-man show. Wasn't She-ra the female equivalent to He-man back in the day? And doesn't she already have a rebooted series? Are male characters from the 80s no longer allowed to have their own shows? lol I'm not even like mad about it, just confused. Then not killing him off once, but killing him off twice. I was confused when they even allowed him to raise the sword since it seems like they're trying to make Teela the main character. If you're trying to change the formula up at least commit to the idea, it just comes off as dumb at this point. Honestly, Evil-lyn had more character development than Teela did. I'd be more interested in an Evil-lyn series than this Teela one.
Teela was integral to the original show. She was captain of the guard, strong, courageous, smart , kind, compassionate and feminine; a great role model.
Spot on girl! I’ve been struggling to express my opinion in regards this new animation and you simply said everything that I was found wrong on it. Well done!

He-Ra
As a first-time viewer of this channel, I have to say I really respect how Laura gave her own take on the show, which involved empathizing with the original show's target audience (who were mostly boys at the time, now mostly men that are middle-aged).
I'm a female he man fan ( first Gen millennial) and I was devastated 💔 🤧 my heroooooo got benched. When she got mad at my boy for dying I just....I tried but after ep. 4 I tapped out
My biggest issues is that Teela acts like a petulant child. Yes she was lied to, but how many time did she say Adam was a coward or lazy. You think she would be a bit more angry at herself upon realizing she has been criticizing he-man and the sacrifice he made for everyone rather than then this "I gonna take my ball and go home" image we got. That was a huge miss for me
Dude, I need you to know a couple things. Rewatch that scene, tell me exactly what happens then talk to me
Well yeah they Luke Skywalkered him.
As someone who did not watch the original series her whole speech seemed a little over the top. Especially so quickly into the series, it seems odd that someone would be that angry about a secret identity especially when they were supposedly your friend and they just died. Wouldn't you be more concerned with mourning them than stomping around about their secret identity?
He-Man saved her back so many times, Adam was her best friend, the kingdom just lost it’s champion, the King and Queen just lost their son but it’s all about Teelas feelings bu-hu! 😭😭😭.
The real Teela from the 80’s was all about protecting and serving others, she was very mature and level headed. I don’t know what Kevin Smith was smoking when he turn her into a petulant self centered cry baby
@@ninjahandz1168 he was smoking wokeism and feminism.
They could have at least made Teela likable
Yeah, that's what killed it for me in the very first episode. I mean I can understand being affected by finding out so many others knew this secret you didn't. But... the timing, the fact she didn't give a crap about her father being banished (which would have maybe been a decent motivation to leave herself?) and just accused everyone, including grieving parents, of lying to HER... wow, what a petty, self-centered character.
Also... did Kevin Smith just completely forget that 5 seconds before she pronounced EVERYONE liars they'd clearly established that the King didn't know? You think she'd... sympathize with him on that one? No, no. Everyone's a liar and has wronged her. This is a totally normal and completely not spoiled thing that normal people would do apparently.
Then again, this is the same Kevin Smith that put his daughter and his friend in his new He-Man show, so... maybe not the best person to expect to understand entitlement?
She is a manly woman. I like that they EXPLAIN why she knows stuff - flashbacks from adventures with He-man before.
She isn't this "press button- win" female.
Certainly- the agenda push is there but its WAAAAAY better handled than new Titans show (Starfire being fat black chick) and for instance Avatar: Legend of Korra where "plot twist" was lesbianism.
For someone that grew with MOTU - I didn't dislike this. It literaly SHOOK the meta of old shows by STARTING with apocalypse.
I wanna see the rest before I judge fully.
But I liked this.
@@Kserijaro anything that carries "the agenda" deserves to be burned to the ground
@@ThatNorwegianGuy- And I would claim that any generalizations without subtle understanding of finnese is more harmful than benefitial. I am fine with "normalizing" but I am not fine with "forceful spotlighting".
Legend of Korra is spotlighting, while this is normalizing.
I can't say its amazing. It is certainly different. I had things I disliked but major things I very much liked.
"Burned to the ground" is how we get people like Extremist Islam.
First, study. Than understand, then solve, then criticize. Burning things helps noone.
For instance, I am a vehement fan of Star Wars, far more than MOTU.
New Star Wars are trash. There is nothing redeeming about it except visuals and audio. It should stand as a MONUMENT how to kill a franchise, which in turn allows for BETTER CREATORS to create BETTER Things (see Mandalorian)
Vise versa, personaly new She-Ra is SPOTLIGHTING and full hard on femenist erection agenda.
Compared to that trash, Revelations is very good.
See- finesse, understanding and comparison.
If I am to critisize old MOTU id call them superficial, childish and at moments retarded. But the fact is - we all came to like it when we were UNEXPERIENCED.
If your taste did not evolve from that age, you have better problems than one Man-Teela :D
@@ThatNorwegianGuy- burn to the ground?? I'm a conservative, but you are behaving like a total buffoon. People like you are how we lost a good President like Trump. People like you are the reason riots and fires break out!
By the way, your closing speech was great. You just hit the point. Thank you.
This was the unbiased, honest review I was looking for for this series. Thank you!! Subbed
I tried to watch the show with my daughter and mother who was watching for nostalgia sake since she used to watch it with me and bought me all the toys, and both my daughter & my mom thought Teela was just a drag who whined constantly. After trying to get through a couple episodes my mom was asking me what does any of this have to do with the original show & who was this made for and I had no answers, I was just as disappointed and disliked it just as much. 3 generations of animation & sci-fi/fantasy fans and none of us liked it
I think the main problem is Teela. The show basically fixes itself by changing her motivations to a deep shame and regret. She lashing out at the kings, fixed , she is angry at herself for falling in protecting Adam. She quitting being a knight, fixed, she doesn't feel worthy of the title anymore. Fighting evil He-man, fixed, no it is a manifestation of her regrets. Even the ending works as Adam is not just dying but it means Teela fails again at protecting him making true her worst fears.
@@juan0808 Totally, I kinda though that might be it when evil Heman showed up, but then no, she's afraid she's too badass I guess...? And all that missed opportunities to talk to the guy at the afterlife, come on, is Teela an emo teenager?
@@juan0808 Did we watch the same show? Teela is clearly not mad at herself for failing in protecting Adam, she hates Adam for daring to not tell her everything. Adam is not allowed to have any personal secrets from her. He is her slave, he must apologize for not telling her everything.
It was made for pink haired millennial Tumbler users who judge entertainment based on a diversity checklist.
@@LissaBroyles I 100% agree. They're the ones who are most vocal on Twitter. And the ones that Mattel and Netflicks listen to exclusively because they're all in the same echo chamber and have the same woke values. And obviously, none of them are fans of the original Filmation series and know nothing about the original toyline. But all claim to be.
It just feel like this was written by someone that doesn’t like He-Man.
Yep. It's pattern with He-man, Star Wars, Terminator, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, Dr. Who, etc. Writers that don't like the source material or fans. They DO like the money and pushing their personal opinions. Worse, they aren't creative and fans just stop caring.
Kevin Smith doesn't like He-Man. He admitted to that a while ago. But when the show was about to come out he said how big of a He-Man fan he was. Again in contrast to that he recently said he would in fact hate watch the original show. Seems like he lied to build up hype
It was.
It actually was written by someone that didn't like it and lied about liking it.
It was Kevin Smith has admitted he's not a He-man fan
I was born in '73 and remember first seeing He-Man appear in my local toy store. He was everything a D&D loving nerdy boy could want! Then came the TV cartoon series and I was ecstatic! So Netflix Revelation? Setting aside that Teela was the protagonist, the writing, story arc and characterisation are all middle of the road at best. When Laura said how she would have modernised the characters and fantasy style at the end of this video I couldn't agree more. I was also frustrated that with soooo many MoTU characters they introduce a new random to be Teela's companion.... and also in the scene where they are discussing how to save (no less than *cough*) all creation, you have sorceress, Teela, her friend (whose name I forget because she is entirely forgettable) and Evil Lynn.... Four women! sigh.... even if you don't want to see you can't. Overall I feel it is just a swing and a miss, and badly missed opportunity and mediocre story telling.
He-Man "gore" version for mature man in the new age. You cracked it! It's that simple. You understand who the fans are and what they want and deliver that. It's refreshing to see a girl that understands the whole lgbt thing is just forced badly into this. Not against it though.
i really hate, and said this before. how when someone finds out a secret, they feel entitled to know it. a secret is different from a lie. a secret is personal. i find it dumb, why i dislike amber in invincible. this really bothered me
Right? No one really lied to Teela about anything which made her little tantrum all the more awkward.
@Mike hawk long Like the black ancestor of adam, just stupid pandering.
@Grimjow Amber was a selfish teenager, not a grown mature woman. She was purposefully flawed lol. Now in the case of Teela, her attitude may've put everyone off or not been an attractive attitude, but that doesn't make her reaction unrealistic or unreasonable. When you're vulnerable with ppl for years in a fantasy warrior landscape as well as adopted by someone who isn't your real family and those closest to you have been hiding the truth from you for years... yeah I think it's realistic that it'd sting a little. I'm a grown man & I'm speaking from experience lol. Only thing I could've done without is Teela's makeover, but other than that I think her character is getting way too much flack. As is the entire show.
@Mike hawk long i dont care they changed her race. Her attitude is what makes me roll my eyes. Super entitled. Marks beem on the verge of death a few times protecting the world and she sgits on him.
The comic version of her was alot better. The knowing invincible identity thing was only in the show and I have no idea what possessed the writers into thinking it was a good narrative
So, only 5 episodes and they killed He-Man twice? Lame
They killed Adam,not He-Man
He isn't dead. Chris Wood is credited in all 10 episodes.
Lots of flashbacks…
@@jasonmccrank4981 It's like Endgame. It's a cartoon. No one stays dead if they don't want to. That's just storytelling. And according to Kevin Smith, He Man will be back fighting Skeletor in episode 7.
@@randolphdefreese7874 You just revealed that you know absolutely nothing about masters of the universe. You people sicken me beyond words.
I absolutely love that you referenced Ninja Scroll and Berserk! Two of my all time favorites!
I appreciated your positive commentary but still being truthful with your your take on it. Great job!
Actually, characters sexuality were established in the 80s cartoons, Teela and He-man had a moment in the episode Problem with Power, when he carried her not wanting to put her down after fear of almost losing her. Teela said she had a thing for Ram Man, and He-man himself on an episode of She-ra titled Sweet Bee's home, had a hard crush for Sweet Bee. Frosta loved He-man, and Adora loved Seahawk.
That actually doesn't really establish sexuality as some people like men and women. If there was a scene where a character were to say something like "I don't swing that way" or anything similar to that it would have probably established it. However it does tell us that they aren't aromantic, which is why I said it doesn't REALLY rather than completely dismissing it.
I honestly don't care that the original didn't have any gay or bi characters. He-Man was a hunk who looked like he was heading to a bdsm club, that was enough.

True
I can live with Teela's look tbh. She's supposed to be a warrior, so I can believe that she is muscular. But why Evil-Lynn? She's a wizard/mage. Her character-design seemed so out of place.
@@CptMagnus I had the same thought about evil Evil-Lynn. Also why is Andra as muscular as Teela when they indicate she's the tech person with Teela being the muscle so to speak. It's like they only have one default model for any of the lead female characters. I don't understand them having to make every female look like a cross fit athlete to indicate they are a strong character. Characters can have other aspects besides physical strength which can make them formidable and capable characters.

She is too muscular for a woman. She is a trans-woman if anything.

He-Man was my favourite cartoon as a kid (even though I’m a woman). I was so dissapointed with this show that I had to stop watching and just skip to the end to see if they ended it as bad as I was afraid they would. Which they did. And now I think they suck.
I love your videos. Thank you Laura and keep up the great work.

Writing characters as though they have personality disorders seems to be the trend.
I mean, she was in love with him. The show couldn't me more clear about it. I also think it sets up her character arc. She reacted badly and made every wrong choice with how she handled her own grief. We are halfway through the show. Odds are, we see her make peace with her own emotions and go back to the Teela she used to be, including taking up the Man-At-Arms title the king gave her.

The only people that knew where her father, the sorceres, orko and cringer... no one else knew (well i guess adams mother knew because mothers instincts or whatevs)
Soooooo.... why is she betraying them after becomming the new man at arms? Is her loyality so easaly shaken that she abandons her king and queen because SOMEONE ELSE THEN THEM kept a secret from her? Instead of a Teela spinoff, can we get an Evil Lynn show instead? She was mesmerizing, funny, and evil. A perfect villain.
*YES!!! I'VE ALWAYS HAD A THING FOR HER AND WOULD LOVE TO EXPLORE HER PAST AND CHARACTER.*
The Evil Lynn/Orko subplot was the best part
What if Gi Joe and He Man did a spin off? Or Transformers He Man?
No, because misogyny. 😑
You're joking.....q
As much as I like Mark Hamil, I wasn't sold on his role as Skeletor. I kept hearing his joker voice the whole time.
Brian Dobson (Skeletor's VA from the 2002 series) is my preferred voice for the character. I feel he's best at making Skeletor sound both Depraved and Scheming.
Definitely, he was phoning it in. He can do other voices, like Ozai, but he didn't really seem to put much into this. Either that, or Smith, being the little fanboy he is, wanted to get as close to writing a Mark Hamill Joker story as he could and directed Mark to just do that voice.
Would have been better if Hamil made Skeletor sound like Skips *joke*
He didn’t even try to change his voice.
But he was definitely Joker here and they kinda leaned into it, I don't mind. But dang is he unlucky first star wars now this. I hope his Skeletor doesn't get Luke Skywalkered.
Appreciate the honesty review. It was refreshing.

teela is straight in the old cartoon. she even describes her "perfect man" in one episode. and they were pretty obvious about her crush on he-man. this version of teela is the exact opposite of the filmation version.

I was watching this with my 5 year old, I sold this show like a used car salesman, then He-man died. My kid was like I thought you said he was strong 😑
To be fair, he sacrificed himself and saved the entirety of creation. Thats not something a weak man would do.
Have you told your kid it's only part one of two? 😊
LMAOOO you're kid got you there 💀
This made me actually laugh out loud! Nice
thats the whole point. your kid isnt allowed to have a strong, straight, white, male hero. its toxic.
Your closing analysis is perfect - know your audience, know your target demographic, know your customers. You can make strong female characters and still focus on your customers. Why do so many large companies completely miss the mark on this with big IP content?
Cause they embraced the woke.
@@DarthSideous63 You mean the shit?
I love me some strong female character but not like this. Teela is strong, yes, but ungrateful, bitchy. This would have been fine but when the show tried to portray her negatives as something admirable and not wrong is when they lost me.
Meh, I have to disagree. I liked it. Some people think it's a bait and switch but keeping it PG was probably a big priority, hence the lack of gore, which was never the theme of the show. That would of been a bigger change than what they did. Imagine He-Man slice and dice his way through enemies, covered in their blood all while making jokes about it. Would have turned out worse.
It's obvious they where setting up Tela to be the next "champion " and will do so by defeating skelator. The whole "chip on her shoulder" kind of went away after the dark cave visit and fighting He-Man, who's really skelator. It allowed her to get past the lies
Obviously the last episode was showing this by the prior "champions". It was to drill in the idea that He-Man was never one person and how the mantle was passed to new champions after one died. Killing the magic simply made it impossible to do so, so it had to be restored along with the sword.
Personally I see the main demographic being men 35+ watching it with their kids, who never saw the original episodes. I in no way thinkt the lesbian angle was "forced". To me, it was to show how much Tela had changed fighting in battle's, willing to give her life without even knowing the truth. Also, while implied, it was never truly confirm, and showed Tela obviously still has feelings for the prince in the last episode. Seeing him killed, and knowing the truth this time is going to make her the next champion.
As for the whole "woke" culture angle, it's stupid. Why do we let the people who wine and complain the most win? 3 people in Japan who had high level positions have stepped down. One for making a fat joke in 1994, the other for saying something slightly anti-Semitic in 1997. The other one was for something really stupid also. If you want to live in a world where something you said 25 to 30 years prior can make you lose almost everything overnight, that's fine but I don't.
The whole thing with James Gunn being fired because someone found a deleted post from 10 to 15 years prior is the perfect example. Honestly, most of it's men who simply don't want to see a female lead complain the most. Grow up and stop being so offended by everything. It's ruinin:g comedy also.
Exactly. I'm an old school fan of the show and so are most of my friends. Not a single one of us cares how gay the characters are. But we definitely DO care that they turned a loving, friendly, druid into this butch, "fuck-you" style, warrior. If I was a lesbian, Teela would piss me off. You don't gotta be a butch bitch to be gay. Like, fuck sake. THAT'S A GODDAMNED STEREOTYPE! Yeesh. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. -_-
First time watching you and I love it. You’re funny and love the way you act. Thank you.
FANTASTIC review of the series. Totally captured what I'm feeling about it, having lived through the original cartoon. Nice job! 😀😀😀
Teela's greatest fear is that she's too awesome..... I was done at that point. 😫
To be fair she really does have a hidden power since The Sorceress is her mother.
I think her fear was that she wasn't powerful enough to defend Eternia without He-Man, and her "finding her power" is about her eventually becoming the new Sorceress.
My awesomeness scares me sometimes.
Yah, if that's your fear, it just shows you've got a personality disorder.

Nicely done Laura!
I had pumped up my son for this series so much. We watched the original Thundercats series together (he's 9), and it was so nostalgic, I had told him all about He-man. We even watched the 'so bad it's good (but not really)' live action Masters movie with Dolph Lundgren. So when this was announced we were pumped! The 1st 90% of the 1st episode really had me excited, He-man kicking ass and taking names as it should be. When he died my son was just like 'What!?', and spent the next 2 episodes convinced of his imminent return. Teela's temper tantrum about not knowing Prince Adam was He-man was reminiscent of my 15 year old daughter when her mom took her phone, very unbecoming. The potential to make this a new and instant classic was limitless, instead it is utter garbage. Possible Teela secret arc of her being a lesbian makes sense considering the trend of taking classic established characters/stories and twisting them into something unrecognizable, unwanted and unwatchable.
The part where skeletor cracks the orb pissed me off so much. All of the heroes are standing around and do nothing to stop him but they just watch him monologue and let him do it. “Noooooo dooooonnnttttt yawnnnn”

@@D.Jay. You would not have been arguing about that in 1986. Fuck off.
Very quickly I discovered that the show couldn't decided what it wanted to be at times. Campy 80's or serious modern drama. It was moments like that which felt so out of place in a mostly serious show.
This show is terribly written.
Like, you mean to tell me that NO ONE is guarding castle Grayskull (the most important place in the universe) just because Teela's getting a big promotion? Can you imagine the chaos that would probably ensue if the president said "Alright, it's Superbowl Sunday, so EVERYONE that works at the Pentagon can just go home... don't worry about national security or anything like that."
That poster in itself is a bait and switch!
I would simply call it a lie.

I thought Adam kept his form because he was always humble. He always seemed to see He Man as a mask that was needed to protect grey skull. Like Clark Kent and superman.
Yea, that's why he chose to use his "human" form in "their" heaven.
I'd kinda gotten the impression from the prior reboot that He-Man was the only champion who even had a secret identity, he was born Adam and turned into the champion, while all the other champions were born as such, with no second form.
Maybe I was wrong or am misremembering. Plus, of course, the other reboot has a completely different historical continuity anyways.
Agreed. They actually explained it best in an episode of Lois & Clark. "Clark is who I am. Superman is what I can do."
And plus it's show that's who Adam really is. He wasn't born as HE-MAN he was born as Adam.
Much like Superman he wasn't born as Clark he was born as Superman, when he wakes up in the morning he Superman.
With Superman, Clark Kent is the mask
Not gonna lie, your vision for a modern He-man you went over at the end gave me some chills. That would have been absolutely incredible.

It missed the target audience mark completely.
Also, agree 100%, if they had called it "Teela" and the Masters of the Universe from the start most would not have had any issues at all... but to super hype the series and sale it as a new HE-MAN series was raising people up, just to knock them down again. Very weird way to go about it.
I loved the show, but like you, was just thinking the whole way through this feels weird and very forced. And where the hell is He-Man?
I would love them to make a Priness of Power with the main character focus on Bow now PMSL.
Hi Laura. This is the first video in your channel that I watch. It's very well edited and you are a great speaker.
Also, respectfully, you are very pretty. 🙂
What about She-Ra’s sword of power??? Doesn’t that still exist?
I was thinking the same thing. If this is supposed to be start right where "the original left off," then how could it ignore She-Ra. For that matter, how could it ignore that Space He-Man thing too?
It's a rights issue. They did some faulty deal back in the day that ended up splitting the TV rights to where He-man and She-ra can no longer interact. Same reason they couldn't use He-man (thankfully) in the She-ra reboot.
@@jbougger She-Ra has her own current Netflix series by Dreamworks, the He-Man in outer space series (truly mediocre) I believe is owned by Universal.
She-Ras sword is called the Sword of Protection. It looks the same as the Sword of Power except there is a jewel in the center of it.
I was wondering the same thing the whole time I was watching the show. Yes the Sword of power was made from 2 parts, but what does that mean for the Sword of Protection ? Also what does Skeletor’s transformation mean for the Horde, if that is even the direction that Kevin Smith’s version of Masters of the Universe is going?
I think its funny that Adora can get a complete and respectful adaptation across 5 seasons fully exploring her at the center, her friendships and relationships, explicitly driving the plot with her actions, etc.

From what I've read and seen my take on why people are so pissed is, well, everyone is sick and tired of bait and switch, subversion of expectations in media. It seems as though that is all we get in entertainment these days.
That'd be fine if it was actually done well without assassinating what the original stories and characters were just to fill their voids with empty imitations and worse concepts. Most of the time it's either not interesting or not entertaining enough to warrant the changes.
