Notice how whenever Neil goes off on a tangent and tries to explain something cool, the anchors redirect and ask him about his favorite scifi movie or something entertainment related? God, let the man speak for a second. The HoneyBoo Boo crowd could learn a few things from him.

People can accept Science FICTION in star trek but not in Interstellar? It's called a science FICTION movie for a reason. It's not a scientific documentary. Interstellar is one of most beautiful film I've seen in a long time and it's nice to have a movie that can shake up your brain a little bit and turn you curious about the universe we live in and what a fresh break from all these superheroes movies fatique.
True, but Interstellar was something that prided itself on being as scientifically accurate as possible, and even tried to dumb down explanations for us mere mortals to comprehend it. But that said, Interstellar was, for the most part, a good movie.
It's a good thing you have people like Neil that balance out those retards.

Jaspreet Dhanjan Well Neil is actually wrong. If a planet was able to exist that close to a blackhole (that's another topic of discussion), the pull would create a bulg of water in one side of the planet, not waves. And with such strong gravity, if waves were produced by sismic activity, they would be much smaller than those on Earth.
Caleb Crowe Hey douchebag, everyone fucking knows what the name of the continents are. It's also safe to say that nobody outside of the United States of AMERICA calls themselves Americans, that's not how this shit works. Nothing he said was untrue. You tried so hard to make him look stupid. How silly. *I'm an American.*
I don't really feel good that an animated children's movie beat such a movie like Interstellar at the domestic box office. I wonder what that says about us as Americans. Globally, Interstellar dominated, thankfully. I don't have anything against animated movies. They are witty and very entertaining. I just wonder why Interstellar came in second to a movie like that.
I wonder the exact same thing too!! But hey, don't be too surprised. If Avengers (I still really love) can rake in bigger $$$ ahead of enlightening pieces of art like this, then don't be too shocked by big hero 6. It's very telling isn't it?smh
In terms of box office. A huge factor is that Big Hero Six was released in 3D as well as 2D. That means that it gets twice the show times in theaters. Another factor is that Interstellar is a three hour long movie, meaning, that fewer showings can be shown in duration of theater hours. Those factors play a significant role in box office. I sure hope this helped!
To be fair, this information doesn't interest everyone and is not something they have probably ever used even if they've learned it at some point in time.
I thought when I was a mere 5 that they were different, and around 7 I learned they were the same. Most kids can barely tell time, and I was considering the inside of a black hole...
Chris Jayson you cant compare one person with a whole country, also I dont think one of the richest countries in the world (USA) would be full of uneducated people but exactly the opposite
just the simple fact that so many People dont know anything about relativity makes me wonder what they have heard in School.. isnt that general knowledge? Young children know every app on their phones and celebrity shit but nothing about science, thats frightening... at least i hope such a good film like interstellar inspires Kids to read books and educate themselves
_"isnt that general knowledge?"_ It's not, actually, AFAIK. Isn't it mostly a university-level 4th year course? From what I could gather you could even have physics Ph.D without ever taking a course on GR - though it got better lately. You surely can't expect everyone to have university-grade knowledge on physics... I mean, lots of people have some layman understanding from science popularizing books with little to no math in them, but even that is only if they're interested in this stuff. Can't expect everyone to be that much interested in it.
It really isn't that complicated and I think it should be taught in high school it should be general knowledge and is more of a lower level of physics concept wise, but it can get complicated. But the concept should be taught at least.
Buzzfuzz98 I can agree with that, sure. As a general concept it should be taught early, and at least a worthy mention (like a dedicated lesson or two with some interesting stuff) of Quantum Mechanics should be there. If only to show youngsters that there is more to it than just boring math. Not to overload them with equations, but to give them a glimpse of what they could be learning about should they choose that direction later on. And that would also probably force some teachers to say "...we don't really know how that works yet" to kids asking questions about black holes or something. ;) Doesn't happen that much in school.
Phresh Kicks we at least know the difference. I don't know shit about horses and fish but I know they're very different and I can list about 10 ways in which they're different without having any sort of formal biology education.
I was almost disappointed that Neil couldn't admit that Interstellar is a good movie in that, it is a very enjoyable piece of cinema and fairly accurate for a Hollywood movie, but I can't fault him for naming Contact as his go to celestial travel movie of choice so to speak . Personally, I think they're both great movies and I will be purchasing Interstellar as soon as it comes out on disc.

The faces of the hosts as Neil explains are priceless XD
I understand they had a time limit, but it just feels a little disrespectful to interrupt NDT's explanation of what happens to asteroids when they enter the atmosphere and explode.
Well, like you said, they are on a time limit. He could go on and on, but he already got the point across that it was the sonic boom, and the ending of the interview is coming up. The woman notices and asks a question that has a finite, fast answer that gives him the last word. I'm sure you'd find it ultimately more disrespectful if they just told him time's up and cut him off.
Yep. He's starred in two of the most memorable sci-fi movies ever. Interstellar is a classic in the making. Well, not in the making... it's already here, but you know what I mean :)
You guys are too harsh on the hosts. Not everyone has the time or energy to learn advanced physics and cosmology. They were polite to Neil. I would rather have tolerant ignorant people run the world than intolerant educated people any day.
A silly-ass presentation. Gosh, am I being too hard on the (mindless) hosts? They're sitting there, looking at the floor, examining their fingernails and (SORRY!!) have to break for a commercial, so they ask, what is your favorite Sci-Fi film, Neil?" Abruptly cutting him off for any more good information about what he thought of the film "Interstellar." He mentioned "Contact," a fine film from 1997. How can you defend these twits as daytime television hosts? Emphasis on your handle, the "loser" part. I wouldn't have a clue about the "sexy" part....and honestly, I don't want to know.
You would rather have tolerant "ignorant" people run the world than intolerant "educated" people any day?" OMG! You are truly a lost cause! "Ignorance," which is clearly on your side (i.e. your kinda stupid - no, actually, you're very stupid) would be the end of us all. "Educated" people, for the most part, are NOT intolerant. They are typically liberal people who know a hell of a lot more than you do. Your handle, SexyLoser, lets ALL of us know that you're a LOSER, and not very "sexy" either. Good riddance!
Goto 2:06 mins to see what a tv news presenters' brain looks like when faced with something weightier than reading off a missing dog story from his Autocue
I think ive watched literally every video with Neil Degrasi Tyson in it. If i had to be left on an island and told i can only watch video content of one person for the rest of my life. It would be every Neil Degrassi Tyson video. I can listen to him talk all day.
Just got home from seeing Interstellar and the first movie that reflected with me while driving home was Contact -- closed many gaps!! Then seeing this video with deGrasse concurring. Da man! Saw it on RPX tonight, tomorrow will see on IMAX.
Me and NDT share the same fave sci-fi movie of all time. It's Contact. Interstellar and Contact are both my faves now. Contact just remains a notch higher coz even up to now, the novel and the movie still stirs me. :)
The expressions the two other anchors were giving were hysterical. Just a "Help me, I have no idea what is going on and I don't want to sound stupid" look. The main host lady was rockin it, though.
First off Mr. Neil deGrasse is Flippin' Awesome!! Now onto the funny stuff, Yeah buddy, strait up Duhhhh-science-what-again-face?? @ 02:06 - 02:08 LOL!!!;) still laughing;)
I'd really appreciate it if the news stopped trying to be "hip" and started trying to be intelligent instead. Don't act stupid because your betters are watching the ratings. Engage that dialogue. In these times it may not come again, it certainly isn't often. People are too impatient to care about the wonders of science it seems. Science is like a side-show to the real-world for most people because money-makers can trick the reward systems of basic people. You lack critical thinking skills so you're easy to make money from. Of course they can't have you plumb the depths of the cosmos and your being earnestly, you'd make measured decisions in life making you useless to most of corporate America. In fact the dumber you are the better off someone else is.
david bouy im a bit late, but that television isn't oriented to people who want that or understand what the conversation would be about, that's why it's dumbed down
Are these news people really this ignorant about things which are basic high school physics and earth science? Seriously? Not knowing what a meteor is?
You know you need pretend dumb to have good conversation. Because you dont want your conversation partner said " yeah I know that " when you try tell something and ended as awkward silence
bunnyfreakz Well, this may be true, but there's no need to dumb down the program. Popular media should expect more than this from their audience. (And good talk shows do.)
Man i just love NDT, i wish i could have a class with him as an instructor or just simply hear him give a lecture or even just have great conversations with him!
I feel dumber listening to these anchors adding in there little comments, I love how their faces are just blank every time he tries to explain something. They have no idea what he's talking about.
Great interview. So glad he said Carl Sagan's story- Contact. Made me well up inside. Great men, both Tyson and Sagan. The earth is a better place for having humans like them to teach and guide us.
I love NDT but I hate his aversion to ever having a stance on anything. Countless interviews he never takes a a stance, and always plops himself right in the middle of either argument. There is a difference between being objective and being neutral on literally everything, a big difference. I suppose its a big picture business concept that avoids alienating any potential fan base
No doubt. I find it hard to believe that he can't have an opinion on something that is so closely related to his passion. It's almost cowardice. Did you like the movie..why or why not, Neil...it's simple.
mykul koplan I get the impression that he isn't wanting to jeopardize the success of the movie based on his opinion of how accurate the science is. He's not being a movie critic, but he carries a lot of clout in the public eye and doesn't want to tank the movie that might otherwise inspire someone to pursue science, help better the planet, or be good to someone, all simply because he found a flaw or two and told the media his thoughts on it.
I picked the wrong video to comment this because I meant more in general, not just this video. He got into a very entertaining fight on his podcast about him never taking a stance
Then it's something I love. Most people today try to be skeptics for the sake of being skeptics, debunk and all that. Well, I sort of like it, because I don't like the ignorance and it's good to hear the skeptic's side, but sometimes it's good for once to have a nicer person in the scientific community. I mean, he says what needs to be say, but doesn't need to say sucks or rules. We miss those people. Everybody wants to be an arrogant skeptic.
A stance on what? He takes very strong stances: against the anti-GMO and anti-vaxxing movement, against faith-based attacks on science in the classroom, etc. Or you mean a stance on _this_ movie? Well, weren't you listening? He already said the science holds up. Do you want his opinion regarding the film's narrative structure? That's not really his specialty.
I asked myself that same question and I agree with Contact being of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time, the ones dealing with time, space and travel at least. Neil's passion for science is so contagious that when he speaks of new information it comes in a form that's so intuitive, it immediately makes sense when you hear it. Great teacher he would is. "The true measurement of intelligence lies within the thirst of knowledge". Unknown.
I guess that's why "fiction" is in the title. My scientific minded husband thought some parts were cheesy and my brain is very "dreamy" so I was entranced the whole time!
NZXcel You seem to be uneducated, do you even know anything about physics? The wormholes and black holes were simulated from actual equations. Yes, it wouldn't really be possible to travel through a wormhole, but they did a pretty good job making the movie follow the laws of physics, i.e the time dilation.
XxCoolnamewithXsxX lol do you actually believe there is a planet which could possibly have a time dilation factor of 60,000? You do realize that for such a scenario to be possible you would need to be near the surface of the black hole and well under the minimum possible stable orbit for any object around it. Not to mention the tidal forces would have torn that planet and the space craft which attempted to slingshot around the black hole to pieces. Oh and surviving falling into a black hole? You actually think all of this is realistic? The equations were there to substantiate the visual effects nothing more.
In terms of realism, Gravity is probably the most realistic sci-fi movies but the main reason for it is because it's using technology and environments we are familiar with. But yeah, realism isn't necessarily the best thing about a movie.
It was ok movie. Obviously there was some attention to paid to physics of such flight, etc. Obviously the physics of it aren't rock-hard, Miller's planet most likely would be too close to the black hole judging by the gravitational time dilation. Even if it did exist, just getting on the planet and getting off would require ridiculous amounts of energy. I guess I should just let it slide because it is fiction after all. I really disliked the twist and felt it was very far-fetched. And then there are the gaping plotholes ( origin of wormhole become paradoxical towards to end, why didn't NASA just call Cooper, how was the world outside of US, why send humans instead of their advanced robots on completely unknown system etc. ) The characters were bit dull, I felt they were there to fill in some very predictable roles ( cannon fodder, token traitor... ). It is still above some trash I have watched ( most recent was Lucy which was a horrible, horrible movie ), but I wasn't particularly tingled by it.
Notice how whenever Neil goes off on a tangent and tries to explain something cool, the anchors redirect and ask him about his favorite scifi movie or something entertainment related? God, let the man speak for a second. The HoneyBoo Boo crowd could learn a few things from him.
"can we talk about texas ahh over the weekend..." neil is doing a few favours for some good friends
I agree. I think its because they have no idea what the fuck he's talking about, so whenever he tries to impart knowledge they're just like "tell me if you liked the film."
***** The worst part is that he was breaking it down to a very basic level such as them not knowing the difference between a wormhole and black hole.
Totally agree.

Haha. U sir successfully made me chuckle..
I'm no scientist but even i know what worm holes are

Sigh so simple right? *Being sarcastic*
Interstellar is a memorable, philosophical and emotional film experience on the grandest scale!
Agree, 2001 + 2010 were accurate in terms of realism, Interstellar takes it to the next level.
Nick Breen too bad it was boring as all hell though.

humanity has no chance. big hero six was more watched then interstellar.
Family movie > sci-fi aimed at adults. Every single time.
Truth ^^^
Years from now people will remember Interstellar. Not Big Hero 6.
Take that as solace.
Not necessarily watched more. Big Hero 6 probably made extra money off the 3D ticket sales.

Niel deGrasse Tyson deserved a longer segment imo so he didn't have to rush his thoughts/talk :O
2:06 it looks like Neil's discussion of astrophysics is going over this guy's head...
Oh my God, the look on the other dude's face when they cut away to him.
Picture perfect "Duhhhhh...." face.
LMAO I was going to say that!
Neil deGrasse Tyson 2016.
I regret that I had but one thumbs up to give.
+Acthman: I'll help you out with another one; here you go..
Eru Iluvatar almost 2018
2020 it is.
Contact is awesome, i thought i was the only one that remembered that movie
What are your top 3 favorite sci-fi films? 😀
Tyson is wasting is his breath talking to these ppl
Just got home from seeing Interstellar and the first movie that reflected with me while driving home was Contact -- closed many gaps!! Then seeing this video with deGrasse concurring. Da man! Saw it on RPX tonight, tomorrow will see on IMAX.
Why do they ask a question and then cut him off with another question when he's answering their question
Me and NDT share the same fave sci-fi movie of all time. It's Contact. Interstellar and Contact are both my faves now. Contact just remains a notch higher coz even up to now, the novel and the movie still stirs me. :)
It's because contact was written for Sagan....the man! :)
Actually, Contact was adapted from Sagan's novel or the same title. NDT has great respect for THE Carl Sagan.
I bet that meteor was Optimus Prime
I ended up watching Contact again after hearing him mention it.
What are your top 3 favorite sci-fi films? 😀
His face at 2:07 kills me everytime
I love just hearing that guy talk. I love his voice and charisma.
I feel like he's thinking "God these people are dumb."
Jaminsky i was thinking the same :P
Jaminsky amen to that ... Oh wait ... fuck.
He prob thinks that ALOT
He already knows that
I love the anchor's faces! They're like amazed and confused all at once.
I loved this movie so much
The expressions the two other anchors were giving were hysterical. Just a "Help me, I have no idea what is going on and I don't want to sound stupid" look. The main host lady was rockin it, though.
The waves are touching the clouds
Had a feeling he was going to say "Contact" ... and so glad he did. Just went up even a few MORE notches in my book.
Neil deGrasse Tyson's look for "no spoilers, no spoilers" 3:54
He mentions "Contact" as his favourite sci-fi movie, which was clearly an inspiration for Interstellar.
4:21 best laugh ever!
Contact would be mine too, then 2001. Although I haven't seen Interstellar yet.
What are your top 3 favorite sci-fi films? 😀
First off Mr. Neil deGrasse is Flippin' Awesome!! Now onto the funny stuff, Yeah buddy, strait up Duhhhh-science-what-again-face?? @ 02:06 - 02:08 LOL!!!;) still laughing;)
Contact movie also is my favourite!
What are your top 3 favorite sci-fi films? 😀
In fact the dumber you are the better off someone else is.
david bouy im a bit late, but that television isn't oriented to people who want that or understand what the conversation would be about, that's why it's dumbed down
Anybody caught the 'I am so confused' eyerolling at 2:05?
2:07 *i have no clue what he's on about*
When I was watching Intersteller it reminded me alot of Contact.
yes its kinda similar, someone going where humans never even dreamed of going. both film have some level of mind-fuck potential ^^
Mind has been fucked every which way possible! lol
What are your top 3 favorite sci-fi films? 😀
Have you seen steins gate? Best time travel anime.
Are these news people really this ignorant about things which are basic high school physics and earth science? Seriously? Not knowing what a meteor is?
It's comforting to think that they're just appealing to the lowest common denominator.
Pretending to be dumb, however misguided that may be, is better than actually being dumb.
American media for you.
2:06 cue the derp music.
Contact was a GREAT fucking movie! Haven't seen it in years, but because I just watched this and Neil brought it up.. time to go watch it again!!
I have never heard of it, now i'm going to go look it up. lol
Do you know what year the movie came out, the one he's talking about?
Rey Arias Contact 1997
www.imdb.com/title/tt0118884/
Alvin Akbar
Thanks! :)
2:06 that face :D "what the fck is going on?"
The difference between a wormhole and a black hole? Are you fucking kidding me?
One is a hole on a snake like creature that lives in the earth. Called an earthworm.
The other is what resides between my big black ass.
Man i just love NDT, i wish i could have a class with him as an instructor or just simply hear him give a lecture or even just have great conversations with him!
Did she seriously ask what's the difference between a black hole and a Wormhole???
They wanted him to say Interstellar at the end, but instead we got a cheers to Sagan!
What are your top 3 favorite sci-fi films? 😀
I love how he is a hand talker as well! Makes me feel a little better about it.
2:06 "dafuq is he saying" face
I asked myself that same question and I agree with Contact being of the best Sci-Fi movies of all time, the ones dealing with time, space and travel at least. Neil's passion for science is so contagious that when he speaks of new information it comes in a form that's so intuitive, it immediately makes sense when you hear it. Great teacher he would is. "The true measurement of intelligence lies within the thirst of knowledge". Unknown.
There was very little that was realistic about this movie... pure science fiction.
I guess that's why "fiction" is in the title. My scientific minded husband thought some parts were cheesy and my brain is very "dreamy" so I was entranced the whole time!
I enjoyed it but some of it just didn't make logical sense at all.
2:05 has to be my favorite part of this.
@2:05 Guy has no idea what Neil is saying
Just saw the film and immediately wanted to know Neil's opinion. GREAT MOVIE
And then there are the gaping plotholes ( origin of wormhole become paradoxical towards to end, why didn't NASA just call Cooper, how was the world outside of US, why send humans instead of their advanced robots on completely unknown system etc. )
The characters were bit dull, I felt they were there to fill in some very predictable roles ( cannon fodder, token traitor... ).
It is still above some trash I have watched ( most recent was Lucy which was a horrible, horrible movie ), but I wasn't particularly tingled by it.
Man! Tyson must be such a great professor in a classroom. I think none of his students would like to leave the room.
You can literally see how stupid these people are next to Neil. I wonder if he can do this to everyone he stands next to.
Its so bad its hilarious, I love Neil 😂😂😂
Neil deGrasse Tyson is a great man, he's not some boring dude that knows too much about space, he's actually entertaining with his knowledge.
