You get what you pay for but there is some value here!
Hypnotik Photography Did you update to the latest firmware for your review? It significantly improves AF.
@@TheAntiFeminist Yes absolutely
Looks like a keeper! thanks
So wait you're reviewing the e-mount. I'm curious how the alpha Mount compares any opinions
My first lens for the Sony A7III was the GM 24-70mm f/2.8. Then I bought the GM 16-35mm f/2.8. Later, I wanted more light/bokeh for certain situations, so I got the Sony Zeiss 50mm f/1.4. *And now* I got this one. The very first thing I can say about it and the first reason I can recommend it, is *how small and light* it is compared to the expensive lenses. It invites me *much, much more* to carry my camera around for any occasion. With the other lenses, I think it twice before deciding to carry that size/weight/value around. I also don't worry as much as with the other lenses regarding possible damage in casual street/trip/family photography - and it takes great pictures in general!
Good info, thanks!
I watch an insane amount of lens reviews, and can honestly say YOU NAILED IT BROTHER! Thank you for the fast, forward, and concise review on this lens. I didn't feel like I was being steered towards a brand because of bias -- rather -- that this was an honest review, that seeks to help anyone who might be considering this lens. Subbed and notified, thanks again for the great review!!!
Thanks bud. Happy to help!
I like this lens a lot!!! The pics, the price and the size are great. 50mm is also the perfect focal length. Cannot go wrong with this lens on an a7iii
Very cool and helpful! Thank you. I like that "news anchor type spin of your chair" at the end! Haha!
I really like the 50 1.8! I grabbed this a while back for super cheap and as an entry level prime it’s a no brainer, anyone with just the kit lens can absolutely benefit from this small light prime.
Very underated lens in my opinion
Awesome, fair video. Ty. And for videos the quality looks good on this vid.
I buy this because of your review and this lens so amazing . thank you so much.
Happy to help
The optical quality is very good ! I use it for close up of the milky way galactic center/astro stuff (no need for AF), although not as sharp as the zeiss one. Value for money indeed 😀 Nice review man.
Thanks my friend
Great review.
Great review, thanks for the video. 👍
Thanks friend
I got these yesterday fr Bestbuy 199+ tax .. honestly it's working great and pictures came like super cool ..I really love the portrait bokeh shots on my a7iii worth for that money for sure
Nice, make sure the firmware is up to date!
I say its a great throw around lens especially since its cheap! love the videos man.
Hope you were right, i am waiting for mine in the mail.... But corona made delivery a bit slow
keep up the good work!!
Thanks my friend
Awesome thanks!
Do you know which was the firmware version installed when you reviewed the lens?
Did you review the planner 50 mm 1.4?. Thanks
You have to make sure to update the lens firmware to version 3. A lot of the reviews are using version 1 or 2.
ABSOLUTELY GOLD
hi i have a question about touch operation focus with SONY A7iii . is it ok with this lense ?
I use mostly HB, CZ, and sony G, picked up this lens as a beach and sand lens meaning easily throw away, the bokeh is actually hideous because of the blade effect on it. Which is surprising you didn't notice. The sharpness outperforms my 50mm Zeiss which is a $1,500 USD lens. Sony actually uses this lens as a Loss leader. A lens that actually has a higher value but is sold cheap to get their cameras and other lenses sold. Also surprised you didn't read about sonys sales tactics on this lens. Liked your review just thought you were missing a lot of information about the product. Also sony states it is NOT a video lens, and they recommend against using it for video. None the less, good review
Hello! , would you be kind to share some sources for your opinions so I can know more? Thank you in advance.
Hey Hypnotik! Thanks for the video! I been trying to figure out how to do the transition on this video. The one you did at 39 secs with the yellow bars going across the screen, how do you do that?
Its just a basic transition found in premier pro.
Hypnotik Photography - Does that transition come with the software? Or do you need to download it?
Last question, I trued looking for transitions like this in premier, but couldn’t find them. Do you know where the transition is located in premier?
The recent firmware made the lens much better, I don't do videos often its' mostly stills. So far I'm digging the lens
Great for beginners and for the money.
Yes I totally agree , good gear doesn’t make who you are as a photographer or videographer. But your creativity will expand the longevity and quality of the products.
Will the firmware upgrade help with video af too?
BN S it does help a bit. But it works better with stills. Personally I’ve done video with it and i have no issues as long as it’s well lit.
Thanh Nguyen thanks man, I currently have a 35mm 1.8 do you think I should pick up the 50 or just get an 85 instead...I want to shoot mostly street and occcasional food and product (shoes)
I purchased this lens 18 months ago when I was learning the Sony system on the A72. At the time I was mostly using adapted Canon mount lenses, and this was the first FE mount lens I purchased. It was a good lens, but I had fewer keepers than I did with the Tamron 45 VC (adapted with the Metabones IV). When I upgraded to the A7R3, I sold this lens along with most of my adapted lenses and went fully into Sony FE mount glass. For beginners or travel, it is a good lens. I eventually replaced it with the Sigma 50 Art. Great review btw
I like this lens. More than 85.
does this lens support alpha 58 body
Zeiss 55 mm is a bit more priced to be honest. If that was around 450-500 , that would have been awesome.
Before or after firmware update?
I heard a lot of people saying that this is different when updated.
It’s too bad he didn’t bother to answer this.
@@BicZippo and its why i'm skipping this video
Used it yesterday on an A6000 at an indoor event. Solid sharpness when it focused, but AF is pretty bad, much hunting, slow, and sounds like it has gravel in the motor.
I currently have a Sony 35mm 1.8 but just switched to full frame (a7ii ) would you recommend this lens over the emount 35mm 1.8 I have? It has oss and the autofocus, and works with my a7ii but I don't know if I'm getting the full advantage of going full frame. Thank you.
Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS lens is an APS-C lens, so you can use it on a full-frame only in the crop mode, which means that no, you're not taking the full advantage of the full-frame sensor, while the lens under review here would project the light on the whole sensor.
@@juurstudio isn't the 50 mm 1.8 lens also a crop lens ,??
@@randeep984 No it's not, it's a full frame lens.
@@juurstudio thanks for quick reply
Look at price and image quality. It's good 50mm lens
Nice review, was this recorded before or after the firmware update?
Thanks! About a month ago and was up to date at the time.
GOLD
Was this test done with the latest lens firmware?
That would only affect autofocus and wouldn't to change the image quality of the lens itself
@@unbroken1010 you are right about image quality but the most concern people have about it , is exactly the poor af performance. It would be great if updated the video with the v0.3 installed.
@@uandersonbrittes6526 yeah it's just how much faster do people want autofocus seems like Overkill at this point do people realize they zone Focus for action.
Weird fact: I recently bought one and it said made in Vietnam instead of China O.O Idk if the quality the same.
Works better on the A7iii, with current firmware.
Is it good for zooming in?
No this does not zoom. It is a fixed prime lens.
Is it usable in video ?
Depends on your definition of usable. Its loud and slow..
Hello, I tested this yesterday and compared to my kit lens , so, I liked it but when I zoomed at a picture taken with 1.8 I saw some real, reaaaal amount of cromatic aberation, Little white letters on black background were all magenta, and the black elements had turcoaz ringing.
Is this common? Or was the lens malfunctioning? I am a newb by the way 😖
Can it be corrected on ps express or Lightroom?
Thx
Its Sony's cheapest Full Frame Lens. Value for money, its actually pretty good but don't expect wonders 😉
How do you stop down tho?
You can use the camera's built in aperture controls. Most lenses these days don't have physical aperture rings and rely on the camera body to make those adjustments.
hey do you prefer 85mm or 50mm, and why
Personally, 85.
Stefan Malloch thank you
Stefan Malloch does 85mm works on street photography?
@@ahmadfiqry1841 Nope! Never! The 50mm is a Perfect Allrounder mate... The 85 mm not worthy at all! Only for Portraits that's it.
50mm ANY DAY! BELIEVE ME!
@@ahmadfiqry1841 35mm is the best length for street photos, 50mm is fine but it's hard to use in tight space, and 85mm is too long to include any background.
Does this have Optical Stabilization?
No it does not.
Avs Shrestha it doesn’t but its not bad
can i use to a6000?
yes
But it will become 75mm because of crop-sensor
How can i handle noise of autofocus? Its so annoying
Buy an external mic or quieter lens.
Use earplugs.
4:55 "Fast constant f1.8 aperture" - well... yeah! It's *not* a zoom lens. How could it be *not* constant? :-)
Plastic or Composite material, mmmm Like Plastic? Maybe you will remember plastic is a composite material? I know you can find it on nature nowadays, even on sea water, but come on.... !! a Raw thing produced by earth is not a definition for plastic.
