I became a professional photographer with this lens! I now work for Harley-Davidson and have been doing it for 3 years using the same lens (with others of course) But I will never get rid of the nifty fifty
Couldn’t agree more. A 50 f/1.8 is a no-brainer. Get one. Good video.
I was literally thinking about grabbing a lens and this popped in the top of my feed.
Yeap… UA-cam/ facebook are mind readers 😄
I don’t know if Sony redesigned this lens or not, but I just bought a brand new one last week, and mine is super quiet. Unless you are looking through the view finder, you can’t hear it focusing.
100% the first lens anyone should get after the kit lens, on any system. I live the 85mm 1.8 on my Sony, but too tight sometimes think I need a 50mm in the kit!! Maybe the 55…..
My guy I love your style.
Terry, I really enjoyed this video, probably as much as all the bugs enjoyed having lunch on you. ;-) You did a great job of covering the reasons why we all need a 50mm prime lens.
50mm f1.2 gansta mode…lol
Stoked for this video Terry! I actually asked Becki & Chris about this lens this past week. Going to NYC in a couple of weeks and was debating picking one of these up at B&H. It gives me a focal length I don’t have in a compact side at a fantastic price point.
#FAM
Still wish there was an affiliate through B&H, hate giving Amazon my camera money.
I agree about the 85mm, just not enough background sometimes
love this lens and hate it an the same time I wish Sony would update the focus motors in this 50mm it's focus by wire and slow at time in af for video if shooting moving subjects...I usually use my sony 35mm oss crop lens over this 50mm mainly because of the oss on the crop lens and the ability to use the crop lens in full frame mode with clear image zoom set to 1.3 or 1.2 time zoom to fill the sensor without vignette....but the full frame look has a special crispness to it idk how to explain it...
Doesn’t matter what system you shoot with 100% agree. Everyone needs a 50mm 1.8. The fact that it’s so compact is the main reason to never sell it.
I mean... While 50mm lenses are compact compared to other focal length lenses, in a general sense, they are not. Modern day 50mm lenses are no longer compact. Pre modern day DSLR and mirrorless era, almost every single 50mm was a ''pancake.'' Nowadays nobody makes pancake lenses anymore.
I will go with 35mm 1.8
Sony's 50mm f/1.8 is such a good lens! Very fair price and it gives you great results! I used one of those almost exclusively for photos and even shot short films with it and it was soooo good
I love this lens and I am not selling mine either. There is something so very satisfying with shooting with a cheaper lens (that is still a very good lens) and producing great images. Btw 8:05-8:11 is just priceless.
Dope video lots of information on the NIDDY FIDDY!! 50MM 1.8
chingon video dog... thanks 4share
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ordered this lens and cancelled it straight after lol. Gonna save up for the 55mm
You ain’t on a budget tho lol

#196... Good job Terry. Your work is inspiring for people entering the photo and videography world....appreciate you.
Great video Terry! Nifty fifty's are the bomb!
I have 24-70 f/2.8 from sigma and im struggle, do I really need 1.8 cheap prime lens like 50mm ?
the price of 200-300 dollars for this lens is ok, but just today I bought one for 120 dollars.(((:
Noob question I’m sorry but will this work with the a7ii?
Yes it will
Just picked this lens up for £117 - unbelievably cool on my a7c . I feel like a pro in one move!
Can I use Sony 18-105 mm for gym content? I am new in the videography or photography
Hello bro, thanks for the explanations, i wanna shoot video in the gym with this lens, and i need a budget camera to start, what could be your top pick ?
Isn't auto focus a mith in the professional field. Manual focus is still considered the go too way of filming if you really want that cinematic quality at its best. If you can master Manual focus for anything, then that is something.
Awesome work as usual Terry, I always enjoy your videos.
The "niddy fiddy" was my first lens upgrade on my first DSLR (Nikon D3300) and upon seeing the results I was like, "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!????"
Yep the first post kit lens I got for my Sony A7III was the Rokinon 50mm Tony 1.4!!! I love still love it!!!! Can’t wait for A7IV wanna e first on the waiting list!!!!!
You dope man

Does it have optical zoom?
I have the newer lens and I'm trying to get this quality for my videos! I have 4k but it doesn't look like this 4k

where was this filmed ?

This is a good video for beginners because I noticed some UA-camrs try to shame you for buying a cheap nifty 50.
Like number 747 🎉
What is a ND filter to use with it?

Good job dude! Just bought one and thinking I’ll need shot gun mic for my a7iii to mute the noisy auto focus. What’s your take on this?
Yes sir. Thanks for this video bro.. cheap lenses for the win! Really glad Sony made this lens
Lol 854
Nice
Would recommend the 55mm F1.8 Sonnar T lens over this tbh
This is on point, I had the same findings and agree with you 100%. I wanted a lens that I could use for "general photography", that could be a range of different subjects, some artistic compositions, architecture. This all being said, I am not just faffing around and taking snapshots, I'm trying to take quality images. My findings are repeatedly that the 35 just sucks in too much clutter (unless the subject is the whole scene and the whole scene looks nice) and the 85 isolates too much. I have a much higher rate of success with a 50 in general. The 35 and 85 absolutely have their place, but I view them as more specialised and hence they do not work too well in my personal view when photographing a whole range of subjects
Great Video, as always! And you are definitely right, that lens is a great buy for the money, I am using it on my A6000 myself. Yes I know there is a crop version for it, but I got that lens for 136€ on prime day, how could I say not to that? xD The crop sensor version is like 250€
My fav is the 45mm 1.8f by Rokonin
i love 50mm. decided for the Zeiss 50mm and love the pictures i get out of it, though its a bit heavy and a bit to big for everyday shooting... i wish they had made the new 50mm 2.5 G Lens with that sweet aperture ring faster. For around 700 bucks it could have been king.
This was an fantastic video, thank you. #St.ClairAve
Keep this one in my bag especially when I go someplace where my gear can get beat up. Pulled it out yesterday and got some surprisingly good portraits with it.
Great content as always bro. I had this lens when I 1st started out but then sold it. I might have to pick one up again. (Like #106)
Ultimate beginner lens, I still use it for professional shoots or if I want a small lens to carry around with me and keep my camera light
Thanks again Terry for this video, picked up over the weekend at B&H.
What if Chuck Norris was behind you?

Good 👍 job yo
Just subscribed and I like your videos. I even picked up a lightly used 50 f/1.8 for $160 which is a great deal but lets be real. The 50 f/1.2 crushes this lens in every possible way. I just rented one last week and Ive been trying to justify the cost after using it because I love it so much. Yes, its $2k but the difference in quality between it and the 1.8 is night and day. Everything from focus speed and accuracy to colors and bokeh quality, its really not even close. The average person will indeed be able to see better colors, better clarity, better background blur etc...your clients definitely will too. The 50 f/1.2 is one of the very best lenses Ive used on any system, including way more expensive Leica and Hasselblad lenses. The 50 1.8 is a good, cheap lens, but lets not get it twisted. 85 is still my favorite focal length though and my Samyang 1.4 rarely comes off my camera, which is why I can't justify $2k on a 50 1.2
