I've been learning about catastrophizing; realized I do it because I have a tough time with uncertainty. When plan A fails, I immediately go to the worst case scenario. Sometimes the solution is to realize there isn't one...yet. Thank you for the insight.
As a hypochondriac, I’m always afraid of getting some serious illness. Sometimes, I get in trouble from my thoughts which might turn into taking action out of irrational fear.
I think so many of us can relate to this fear. It sounds like you recognize within yourself when your fears are irrational versus rational. Part of this process is learning to accept the fear without taking actions. Just noticing the fear, accepting it, and allowing the anxiety to drop on it's own. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
You have to recognize and label these thoughts as irrational thoughts. You want to make sure that you are staying away from googling symptoms and seeking reassurance, because those activities can reinforce the intrusive, irrational thoughts. You may want to check out my videos on Health Anxiety and Pure O. Thank you for your comments.
@@Rodecpt0 Oh I felt your pain SO MUCH when I read this comment!! 😓 This absolutely *sucks!* My mother has these thoughts about her health too, it's been a rough year for her 😞 (I, on the other hand, am ridiculously afraid of OTHER PEOPLE getting sick or dying. But not myself. It's really weird.)
My mother is catastrophizing, I was educated in this belief to be always careful and always think of the worth scenario (even for random things) just to be prepared. But this is giving me a lot of anxiety.
I felt these feelings my whole life and it wasn't until about a year ago , I came to realize what I was doing to myself on my own..One day I was over obsessed about an issue going on in my life at the time...I then asked myself " Is what I'm feeling fear over even warranted" ? I thought it out and was able after thinking about what evidence I had to show the worst was about to happen , I began walking myself through a thought process...I told myself to worry about something only if there was a direct reason to do so..I now do this every time I find my thoughts drifting and realize I am over analyzing an issue I'm dealing with...My mom was like this and she always worried about everything...Now, I see there is a name for it...BTW, most things I feared happening, never did....
You sound very logical. It makes sense to think through an issue that is solvable. However, some people have obsessive thoughts about things that are unsolvable. In those cases, overthinking can become compulsive and unhelpful.
@@PaigePradkoTherapy Thanks...I have a theory.,..This type of behavior is learned.....It comes from an "Over reactive/protective mother.....Just watch a toddler that understands the pattern of the mom that watches them ...They rely on the mothers reaction to every single thing that happens ..Say a kid about 3 years old falls down and hits an end table....The kid can actually be okay but he has learned to look at his mother to see how to respond.....In most cases, the overbearing mom will probably yell at the child ....The child then , although not hurt, starts to cry......The child responds to tbe over bearing mothers reaction to mothers "emotional " response and adapts the sign of panic to anything that may be harmful.....This sticks with the child's Pscychi and becomes a trait in their personalities.....It all starts at a young age and stays with a child.....
The Logic part of the word CALM makes so much sense. This logic is where I get stuck. I have ADD and so I think through my entire day so I won't be embarrassed with mistakes. I am 59 years old but was bullied by teachers in school because of focus trouble. I have tried to get over this part of life but I am still sabotaging my jobs by over thinking.
Hi Barb. I am so sorry. It almost sounds like you are trying to do everything perfect because of people early on possibly not understanding ADD symptoms. We often see these types of struggles with ocd as well use ERP therapy to help people.
This has helped me so much I live everyday thinking I’m going to have a heart attack. I get random chest or am pain . I even had to stop working. I started drinking everyday. I lost my relationship but I really feel like I’m getting back on track . I even went to the hospital and they did x rays an ekg and nothing . Let me leave once I calmed down with medication . THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Thank you so much! This really helped me. School just started for me, and whenever I sit in class I can't stop thinking about the possibilities of something bad happening. For example, that I faint, that I vomit (this may sound silly, but I have extreme emetophobia) or even worse things like a school shooting, someone dying etc. These tips have helped me a lot
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Our brains really can overreact at times in an attempt to keep us safe. We cannot let those fears stop us from doing what we want to do in life. Many of my clients experience high anxiety with the start of the school year. Your anxiety will calm down as you get acclimated to the new school year. Be sure to watch the videos on square breathing in the Calm the Body series and the videos in Accepting Anxiety. Wishing you the best in the new school year.
Hi, in 4th grade I had the same fear of vomiting. The possibility of this happening gave me so much anxiety, if another student simply coughed, I’d be afraid they were going to throw up lol. I think the reason it became such a big fear was because I hadn’t thrown up for years and therefore didn’t know the bodily signals that would tell me I had to throw up. So I felt it could happen unexpectedly at any time. The anxiety we get about throwing up causes our throat to feel more closed up, making us feel even more like we’ll be sick. It is an awful fear to have and had held me back for years. In 5th grade the fear went away but I didn’t throw up until the 9th grade. & I was so happy when I did because I became aware of the body signals that would tell me I had to and I realized it’s not that bad. I just close my eyes and remind myself that my body knows what it’s doing & I am safe. I just have to trust my body in this moment. I have also realized how small of a chance there really was of me throwing up. I hope this is helpful at all, or at least makes you feel less alone.
Your videos have helped me considerably. I wish I could do 1 to 1 sessions with you as I know I would get even greater benefit from that for my generalised anxiety, and my health anxiety, but unfortunately I'm on the other side of the pond in the UK. But a sincere thank you for all the great videos you put up here for free!
I think I do it to prevent disappointment ☺️. It has happened to me that I have imagined a great outcome and then feeling disappointed was painful. But … I have realized that imagining the worst scenarios is more harmful! It triggers my anxiety and most of the time those things don’t happen at all
Yes, our fears can run amuck, increase our anxiety and even create body symptoms like increasing our heart rate. We have to change the way we respond to those thoughts. 😊
Paige At 62 I get disappointed that I am still filled with catastrophe thoughts. Literally, since I was a child. I believe that I got that seed from my parents. I do recognize that I watered and nurtured that seed. I also think that in the past it may have served me. It was nice to hear your thoughts and I will subscribe and look forward to seeing your CALM series. Thank you Steve
Hi Steve. I have a video coming out in the next several weeks…I haven’t picked a date yet. The video is on the difference between anxious thoughts in generalized anxiety disorder and intrusive thoughts like we see in OCD. Both conditions involve catastrophizing. There are different treatment choices depending on what you are experiencing. I do have many videos on both anxiety disorders and ocd on my playlist page if you are interested. Here is a very simple ocd assessment to rule out ocd www.paigepradko.com/ocdquiz.

I am so sorry you have been suffering. I hope that the video calms your mind. None of us can see the future and none of us have guarantees that everything will go the way we want it to go. I believe I have been catasrophizing as it relates to driving on the highway. I panicked one time while driving through a horrible rainstorm and have not been able to comfortably drive on the highway since. My brain has been associating the highway to be dangerous and nowhere to get off. I really want things to go back to the way it used to be for me, while driving. It was the time I could relax, return calls, or talk to God. I am looking forward to moving past this.
From your description, it sounds like your brain does associate driving with fear. Thank you for the video. Yours is one of the best ice seen on these things. I think I have pure o. It's really getting me down, making me anxious and in my mind all the time..
Another great video Paige. I constantly catastrphoize with challenges. Listening to this I realized it’s also a coping method for me - almost like it regulates me because in the moment of “catastrophic thinking” I go into tunnel vision of the issue and look for options/ways to be prepared for what “may” be coming.
Hi Georgia. Yes, it certainly can be a method of coping for many people as long as it leads to productive behaviors and not cyclical anxiety without resolution. 😊
It is important sometimes to look beyond the noise our worries make to ask ourselves why we are Catastrophizing and what purpose does it serve us. Thanks for your comment. Always love to hear what you have to say after watching a video.
I definitely am a catastrophier because of my generalized anxiety. It's so hard not to be in this current world with numerous television advertisements on every chsnhel about all of the possible illnesses you could have and the side effects of the medications for them. All the negativity about Covid and other terrible things on the evening news doesn't help either. After the headlines I pretty much turn off the news. Thanks for this video. It helped me realize what I am doing and helped put it in perspective. I subscribed to your channel for more videos ❤️👍.
Yes, it seems like we are bombarded with negative news. Sometimes we have to take a break from the news and connect to our own circle and what is going on in our lives in that moment instead of taking in the worst of what is happening in the whole world. Thank you for subscribing 🙏❤️
Thanks for another great video. I've been using your methods. But im not having much success especially when it comes to worrying and ruminating. Its all about my family. Eight grandchildren and my kids and wife and me. Always scared. Keep the videos coming please. Im not giving up.

Hello Paige.... this video is for me, and people like me. I have this cognitive distortion. I don't like unknowing, i like to know what's going to happen next, but mostly i suffer from irrational fear of all the worst case scenarios i imagine. I probably do this to protect myself. I do recognise that i am doing it, but i don't know how to stop it. Funnily enough i never ask myself what the best case scenario could be and i felt shocked when you mentioned that because it never dawned on me that anyone could think about the best case scenario. Your presence here on youtube is a massive relief to me because i feel reassured that it's not just me going through this strange time in my life... i am 64, and have always been a very positive, strong woman until recently.
You are definitely not alone. I think that part of the human condition is preparing for the “what-ifs”. But, constant worry and rumination can also cause us stress. Sometimes our brains can be rational about planning, but if we are tired and already stressed, our brains can get very irrational. Thank you for your positive comments and I appreciate each one. That position, strong woman is still in you.
This was immensely helpful to me. I have downloaded it and will be listening again. I do with there was not the background sounds as they are distracting
Thank you for this positive approach to reducing or eliminating Catastrophic thinking I felt better after listening to your video and I like the simplicity of your method. I think I catastrophize because my parents are very bumpy relationship and it seemed like we were always in crisis. In fact they were married for 68 years so most of my fears are just in my head. Thank you again
Thank you for watching and commenting, Hank. You are not alone in your experience. If a child felt anxious in their family due to arguments or instability of their parent’s marriage, it can cause them to be on high alert causing hyperarousal or anxiety symptoms. Sometimes you have to talk to that part of yourself and remind yourself that you are safe and can ease up your hyper vigilance.
Thank you. I am most definitely going to try these methods. I lost both my parents by the time I was 24. I now constantly catastophize that I’m going to lose my partner. That he’s going to leave me for someone else etc etc. That would be the worse case scenario for me... and as much as that would break my heart... I have resources to manage that. Thank you x
I am sorry to hear that you lost your parents. As humans, we suffer great losses, but we also have a capacity to move forward with our lives. Wishing you the best on your healing journey. Thank you for your comments.

It sounds like you have very high expectations of yourself when you practice and want perfection. I wonder if you can shift your view and try to make mistakes on purpose. If you practice making mistakes on purpose, it will help to train your brain to be a little more accepting and not so reactive to your mistakes when practicing.
What a wonderful video. Trying to find new ways to cope with my anxiety. My anxiety automatically assumes the worst case scenario in all cases. I couldn't tell you why, possibly years of trauma. Emotional and physical? I'm not sure. Trying to find ways to get over my irrational fears and legitimate fears. It hold me back and prevents me from fully living.
As unhelpful as it is, you have a very active brain that is trying to keep you safe. Sometimes we have to talk back to our brain and tell it to simmer down, we are fine.

This really helped me tonight too. I just moved to Memphis for graduate school and while I am doing well, my brain seems to be catastrophizing on this life change, both professional and personal life things. It’s really helpful to just call yourself outbon it, bring yourself back down to reality, and enjoy the rest of the day. Thank you for your videos! They really help me!
I am so glad it helped you. Yes, calling your self out on Catastrophizing is called, Labeling or Identifying the cognitive distortion. It is a CBT technique. The reason it works is that by labeling it, we activate our frontal cortex (our thinking part of the brain), instead of our limbic system ( the emotional part of the brain). It is a technique I use myself. It kind of resets us a little bit. Thank you for your comment. Good luck in grad school and I hope you love Memphis.

Hi I do this a lot and I try not to but my mind instantly goes there I’ve been watching different videos to gain some insight. So starting from this point forward I will start using some of the exercises I’ve heard and in time my thinking will change. I can control my thinking with a little help.
I always catastrophize how people will take my message. If I worded it badly or if they are going to twist my words and I will get in trouble for saying something. I do not feel calm until I get that person’s response but the entire time I am waiting I feel sick to my stomach. I am also impulsive and will send messages without thinking and then I regret it later on. How do I fix this?
Hi Andrea. I am sorry that you suffer with that fear. Some people are much more sensitive to rejection than others and it makes it very difficult for them to express themselves. There is something called rejection sensitive dysphoria. It is common in people that have adhd. I have been thinking about doing a video on it. I of course do not know if you have rsd, but you would be able to relate to their symptoms. To recover means being sensitive and compassionate to yourself. Practicing little by little expressing yourself and then compassionately comforting yourself for taking that risk knowing how difficult it can be to do so. I am not sure if you can fully recover from being triggered, but you can make progress in soothing yourself.
I have to go on my worst fear and its just horrifying it always happens but my brain creates a picture show and videos in my mind of dying and just anything and it mainly happens on planes and it sends me into a panic and i just need tips since i leave in march 19 and i cant say i have anxiety but i want things to calm me so any tips or help ??

I know that I have issues because they are looking at my restaurant during covid we’re we barely made it through. I’m so scared what they are going to do with me. It’s gotten so bad that I feel like I’m going to jail. Everyone tells me I’m crazy, but my mind won’t shut off. Do you have any advice?
Hi Russ. I am sorry that you are under that stress. Sometimes when we are facing something that feels threatening, it helps to tell yourself that you will do what you have to do. No one is looking to put you in jail for trying to survive during Covid. You will do what you have to do and respond to whatever happens with the audit. I hope this is over soon so that it is behind you.

My catastrophic thinking is since childhood, I’ve been hurt in school, many others. I have health anxieties , but I’m doing a little better with it do to therapy. But my greatest fear is something might happen to my family. I have two grandsons, a wonderful daughter, my son in law. If one of them is sick I go into anxiety, catastrophic thinking..what if this and what if that. I try to ignore it and try to distract myself, but it’s still right under the surface to grow. So I eventually have to take something to calm me down. My seven month young grandson was sick this morning ( came out he was impacted, I know this happens with little ones as they change diets, ( the rational thoughts) but my compulsive thoughts are Omg, what if this is not it and so on . I know it rationally and my daughter called me and he’s fine, but I’ve still have troubles, it drives me crazy and then I get major anxiety. I feel alone and hopeless sometimes.

Hi Paige. Catastrophizing is where I'm at right now. But I'm doing it on someone else's problem, and from your channel guidance, I realise that what I think is a worst case scenario, is probably not what the other person might think, or simply does not have the capacity to think that far ahead. Should I just back off and stop creating a possibly false future, or share my thoughts and possibly create an even worse situation
You are a very caring person. But, it sounds like you have no control over this situation because it involves other people. Our worry over things that we have no control seems like we are creating our own misery. Yet, I understand that you are concerned and you care. Try placing your hand on your heart and tell yourself that although you care about others but you have to let go of the worry about what may happen. I wish you and your family the best.
The process of measuring deff helps. I do believe with catastrophic thinking the worst case usually can be death of some kind lol, which I doubt anyone can plan beside understanding we all have to die and maybe coming to grip with that... but again that’s dumb because most worries won’t reach a point of death without your brain doing some crazy leaps of logic.. sadly my brain does at times haha! Love the videos keep it up
Hi I just found your channel and you are really helpful...I can relate to alot of things u said I always think the worse in order to prepare me for the worse if it happens...sometimes I'm wrong but sometimes I'm right ..but I would like to just be more of a positive thinker as I hurt myself more by always overly worrying!

In conclusion; my ‘gut feeling’ concerning abrupt climate change remains the same and it can be described in the following way. Imagine that you’re on a boat sailing towards oblivion. The only logical recourse would be to turn back now before it’s to late. There’s just one problem. Your boat is sinking and you haven’t enough time. Sailing towards oblivion represents our worlds leadership and their lack of acknowledgment about the eminent consequences of abrupt climate change. Turning back now would represent our leaders acknowledging the above statement and taking immediate action. The sinking boat represents how we are currently living beyond our means. You can’t have infinite growth in a finite system. It is unsustainable. Not having enough time represents the theory of cognitive inertia or perhaps abrupt climate change denialism (?) in moving towards a zero carbon future. “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination, and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.” - Jonas Salk. 🙂
Thanks for advisore. In some time a psiquiatra said me that i had been cathastrophizar each situatión in my live. Since this comment i try think objective and to be positive faced the any problems that present me
Sometimes I think that my fears want to push me to stop having fear, mainly the fear of death and to accept myself as I am. I have to listen to my fears and not believe them, but is not simple. Great video by the way
How do i let the thoughts of death and the cemetary. I always think of these thoughts in my mind. I think of these most of the day in my mind and before bed. I am in constant fear mode
If these thoughts have become obsessive, intrusive thoughts, then your brain has associated the thoughts with a fear response and your brain can obsessively send the thoughts to you. There are a number of ways to correct this, and they involve different exposure or ERP techniques. I have a new video coming out on this subject next week about what to do in the moment that you have the intrusive thoughts. I also have several videos on ERP, exposures and Pure O - OCD that you can find on my playlist page.
@@PaigePradkoTherapy Dear Miss Paige, I was going through all the comments and I am so surprised too see that you have responded to most of them. I think you are a very calm and steady person who enjoys every bit of life. I have been going through many ups and downs in my life and still facing very tough time. I learnt a lot from your videos and others too. I have been a crucial anxiety victim but now I have learnt a lot about it and our thought process but still sometimes when we get stuck with something.. those intrusive and negative thoughts makes us feel depressed or low self esteem. I used to afraid of anxiety last couple of years when I had panic attacks but then I understood that it is a false alarm and it cant do anything harmful to me so I just carried on with anxiety and now I feel it but I dont respond to it and slowly its getting away. Anxiety is not bad it is our friend and these are just the thoughts...stay blessed miss paige :)
Yes…we have adventures with anxiety and even panic until we learn that our brain is often on high alert to protect us. And most often misinterprets small events as if they were major catastrophes. Just by acting calm, we can send messages back to our brains that there is no emergency and we are safe. Thank you for sharing and for your kind comments. We need more kindness in the world. 🙏❤️
I really have a very bad habit of taking failures or rejection as the end of the world..... As a result i have very bad anxiety and depression.... And the most difficult part is even if I try being positive, all the negative experiences in my life that occured in the past brainstorm my mind and make me feel worthless and further worsen my anxiety....
I am so sorry. That can be a very painful experience that can really shut people down and cause depression like you mentioned. Please be very compassionate when you are feeling that way. Talk to that part of yourself that is hurting and reassure that part of yourself that feels so sad and helpless. We all have the ability to comfort the parts of ourselves that feel hurt and rejected. I am going to put this on my “to do” list of videos to make to demonstrate how to help ourselves with this kind of pain. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Jennifer. I am honored that you asked about online therapy. I do provide those services, but, unfortunately, my practice is filled at the moment. I am launching a patreon account on November 1, 2020 where I will offer more one on one communication options for people. I will be talking about that more in my upcoming videos this month. Thank you again for your message. 😊❤️
My brain does this and usually when it happens I seek reassurance from friends and family that I’m being ridiculous. It almost never helps because if they don’t have the same issues they can’t understand why I even bring it up. I personally can’t “let it go” until I fully process my thoughts. I have to get my brain to understand that because of my anxiety, I’m over analyzing things and turning them into fears. Just because I fear an outcome that doesn’t have any evidence to back that fear, doesn’t make it true or probable. That helps me move forward. It can sometimes take a few days or even weeks. Be patient and slow down and have that long chat with yourself
These are very good tips💜! But for me, I sometimes need reassurance that my thoughts are "somewhat" rational, I need someone to talk with and be like: "Oh yeah, I sometimes feel like the world is going to end too! You're not alone at all!" Just....... some reassurance feels good... Am I right...? 😳😳 Or just stupid? 😣
I have the same issue and deal with it the same way u do. But recently my reason for fearing the worst has a basis, though not a very sound one. Couple of astrologers predicted something I don't even want to think about, and now I can't stop catastrophising, and can't even tell myself there is no basis for it... 🤧. It's been hell for me ever since...

I have been catastrophizing a lot in a last four months to the point that I am having a hard time to take action and see whats reality with my fears. Its tiring and I cannot seem to regulate my thinking, even though I kept telling myself its just in my head that, but the feeling and emotion is strong in my body and its really tiring. Although it does seem lessen a bit, but still there and it kept coming back.
If ruminating and catastrophizing keeps returning, and the thoughts are unwanted, there is a possibility that it is OCD, with obsessions only. The compulsions are typically mental compulsions like ruminating and analyzing. Here is a video on how to stop compulsive ruminating ua-cam.com/video/Kj3WhVISFN0/v-deo.html
Thank goddess - u know so much about mental health! I think I catastrophise because I have been so bad in life with so many failures too that I am subscribed to and terrorfied of really bad things happening to me. Amongst many things I have been called pessimistic. I can't stop making it worse (I took some xanax today) plus the voices I hear keep telling me I'm goin to jail, I'm going to hell and a constant array of many ways that things are goin to go wrong for me. I've been missing the true picture and been thinking of myself rather than how what I do hurts others
James, it sounds like you are so hard on yourself. From your comments, I would never describe you as a “bad” person. Actually, I would describe you as a person that is trying their best in life. We all make mistakes and we can unintentionally hurt people we love, but, that does not make us bad. It makes us human. I hope you can see the good in you today and how you are watching these videos because you are trying to have a more stable mood and a better life.

Hello Arjun. So nice of you to check in and say hello. Are you still in a lock down? I actually went back to seeing my clients in person last week, as most people are now vaccinated. I am still working on my online therapy class for health anxiety. I hope to make it available in July. Then, I can get back to making a few videos.
@@PaigePradkoTherapy Sorry for replying late madam, but good news since covid scores have come down from 50,000 to just around 5,000 in my state in the last 45 days. Now it stands at around 5,000 infected per day with 200 deaths per day all over my state of Karnataka in INDIA. From tomorrow June 21st Lockdown is being almost completely lifted in my state largely. Tomorrow is my mom's birthday coincidentally. Life is slowly returning back to normal here Madam. Take your time, please finish all your commitments & then make a video at your leisure. Bye madam, give 2 kisses to Dear Ollie on my behalf..😍😄
That’s wonderful news that the numbers have come down and the lockdown is coming to an end. Happy Birthday to your mother. I hope she enjoys her birthday. Ollie had an unfortunate accident on the beach and tore his acl in his knee and will need surgery. He did the same thing last summer to his other knee. He is still getting around by hopping and I carry him up and down the stairs. Hopefully he will be good as new when his knee is fixed. I am back to seeing clients in person in my office and hope to complete my online therapy class for Health Anxiety and make it available for others at the end of July. It has been much more work and time consuming than I had imagined. But, my hope is that it will help many people.

Very Sorry to get to know about DEAR OLLIE having to endure a painful knee tear that too second time around -- he will be alright, animals heal themselves of such things much faster than we humans do but its a pain & suffering for us to see our pets limp around in our house. Surprising how this happened the 2nd time around.... May be that is his OLLIE'S weak spot and he needs to be careful but who is going to tell him to be careful & will he remember our advice when he is unleashed in the open again -- he will remain an animal forever😍❤ YES that part wherein he has to go up & down the stairs with a knee tear can aggravate his injury further.... I don’t think I’m actually capable of separating Scientific data from my thought process but I do understand the question. Ok. . . Everything in quotations are from experts within their respected fields. As far as I understand it my feelings about abrupt climate change are both logical and data driven. Perhaps it’s not the rational response (?) but Catastrophizing (at least to me) does seem reasonable. “The amount of heat we have put in the world’s oceans in the past 25 years equals to about five Hiroshima bombs of heat, every second, day and night, 365 days a year.” That’s a very important analogy because it helps us visualize the level of destruction happening to our Earth’s system. Abrupt climate change is warming our oceans and is the primary cause of “ocean acidification.” “Scientists estimate that 50-80% of the oxygen production on Earth comes from the ocean. One study for example, found that water in some parts of the tropics had experienced a 40 to 50 percent reduction in oxygen.” And so it’s logical to conclude that we are destroying the very earth systems that keep us alive. . . “Billions of tons of carbon are locked away in environments that are currently being destroyed.” The pace at which climate change is occurring verses the speed at which human activity is required to stop it seems rather unrealistic at this point. Mark Twain once said. . . “History may not repeat itself but it sure does rhyme.” I think that was his savvy way of saying history basically repeats itself. Remember the cognitive inertia thing? Alright enough negativity for now. I hope at least we can buy ourselves some time. Keep doing what you’re doing it’s important. 😊
Thank you. Now I am catastrophizing! I really do appreciate your comments because it may create more awareness, creative solutions and hopefully positive change.
sometimes it's too messed up you don't get answers! it's ok to distract yourself and build some routine and then ask, why it was doing or is starting to doing again but slowly
My question is about climate change and its possible connection to catastrophizing. The human impact on biodiversity is so profound that scientists say the Earth's sixth major extinction event (i.e., the Anthropocene epoch) is already underway. Add to that cognitive inertia which in clinical and neuroscientific literature is defined as humanities lack of motivation to generate distinct cognitive processes needed to attend to a problem or issue. Then. . . we have abrupt climate change (sudden, detectable and rapid warming within the span of a single human lifetime) problem to contend with. Tell me; knowing all of this how can we realistically have hope for our future and the future of our children?
I wish I had an answer for this. It is possible to be miserable and hopeless thinking of every horrible event that can happen. But, somehow, people can experience love, hope, resilience, serenity and even joy. They know the Earth will not exist someday, yet they can experience these positive emotions. Your comment reminds me of deeper existential issues. I cannot answer your question or give you reassurance about bringing a child into the World. That is a deeply personal decision. I imagine many people have had those same doubts and fears throughout time. My advice is to connect to the moment and live in the moment. If larger environment concerns are overwhelming, then find a way that you can get involved in environmental projects. This will ease your worry because you will be taking real action in your life that follows what you value.
You could also take the view that unproven narrative of climate change serves large corporate agendas . For every :" expert " that promotes the catastrophic narrative there's anotyer who debunks the entire theory. Try reading material from opposing points of view. There's plenty of science to disprove the apocalyptic narrative being pushed by the green warriors. If you were to get a better perspective , you may not worry so much about what is likely to never happen. Being fully informed is the key to forming a rational less catastrophic assessment. Trust me, climate change , its proponents are tied to corporate interests.
I sadly actually believed the catastrophizing thoughts, like I didn't know I was catastrophizing, I completely believed that it is a very real possibility and that I have no power or say in how to go about it.
I am so sorry. I can only imagine that made you scared and anxious. Do your best to identify those thoughts as worry thoughts or catastrophizing. Do your best to treat them as background noise and shift your attention to what you were doing before you had those thoughts. I've been learning about catastrophizing; realized I do it because I have a tough time with uncertainty. When plan A fails, I immediately go to the worst case scenario. Sometimes the solution is to realize there isn't one...yet. Thank you for the insight.
Yes, sometimes it is all about tolerating uncertainty. 😊👍🏻

My mother is catastrophizing, I was educated in this belief to be always careful and always think of the worth scenario (even for random things) just to be prepared. But this is giving me a lot of anxiety.
Yes, it can certainly cause considerable anxiety. 😥

I fear of throwing up while in flights so I always carry a polythene bag in my pocket ,that calms my mind...

THIS is a excellent video, something I do all the time. Thanks again
You’re welcome, SpeedyPete. 😊
This was excellent. First person to describe what I’m going thought exactly. Thank you
Thank you for watching and commenting 🙏❤️
Great video! Thank you for posting.
Thank you 🙏
I really, really liked the questions you went through to ask yourself as to 'WHY' 'you' might be catastrophizing, very insightful, helpful questions.
I have stopped reading newspaper and watching news many years back ,that helps ....a bit
Thanks for another great video. I've been using your methods. But im not having much success especially when it comes to worrying and ruminating. Its all about my family. Eight grandchildren and my kids and wife and me. Always scared. Keep the videos coming please. Im not giving up.
Sorry to hear that. Rumination and worry can become compulsive. It feels automatic but is actually under your control. Here is a video that may help ua-cam.com/video/Kj3WhVISFN0/v-deo.htmlsi=ReQYYqLfR5GGBGFD

Glad you found it helpful, Christina. Sorry about the background music.
👍🏼thank you. Very informative and I’ll use these tools!
Loved this, Paige! Thank you. Looking forward to putting it to use.
You're so welcome! So glad!

Me too

I am so looking forward to trying out these techniques. Paige I had never heard of Catastrophising I want to say thank you so much. This is EXACTLY WHAT I AM DOING to myself and as a result I'm having panic attacks in the middle of the evening waking up at 2am, 3am, with this overwhelming feeling of dread and fear. I have not slept a normal cycle it feels like years. But I wanted to say thank you because you are the first person I have ever heard use that term and explain EXACTLY what is happening with me. 🤗❤️🤗 Thank You.
Hi Simon. I am so sorry that you have been experiencing this. Hi I do this a lot and I try not to but my mind instantly goes there I’ve been watching different videos to gain some insight. So starting from this point forward I will start using some of the exercises I’ve heard and in time my thinking will change. I can control my thinking with a little help.
It is interesting that we tend to catastrophize to feel better, but it only seems to make us more anxious.
Thank you!
You’re welcome 🙏

I am wondering if what you are describing is more in line with obsessive, intrusive thoughts. These thoughts are a little different than catastrophizing. Please watch my video on Pure O, and see if this describes what you are experiencing. There are different treatment recommendations for obsessive, intrusive thoughts than anxiety and Catastrophizing. Let me know if you believe your thoughts are more anxious thoughts or intrusive, obsessive thoughts after you watch the Pure O video. Thank you for your comments.
Thank you this is so helpful. I think I'd have trouble doing the last point as I'm not sure what I'd do if the worst case scenario happened and I don't want to think about it ..
Sometimes I think about when I've had catastrophic thoughts before and how they didn't happen. X
That’s a great suggestion and it can really help to connect to “what is” instead of “what if”.
I thought the same thing about worst case scenario.

Paige I love watching your videos. I have had a awful 4 weeks of catasrtrophizing. This started with an IRS audit on my business.

Love the videos keep it up
Great point. Thank you 😊
Very helpful! Thank you!
I love your videos. Not really relevant but your voice is very soothing
Hello, thank you for your video it is very helpful and I have subscribed. I catastrophise about lots of things such as loosing my job and breaking up with my boyfriend. It is exhausting but now I can identify it, I will go through your questions and really try to prevent this. I think I enjoy putting myself down and my catastrophising is more about beating myself up, this feeds my anxiety for sure. It used to be about preparing myself and waiting for the unknown and mostly still is but I don't know if this is strange but my mind loves anxiety. I'm waiting for cbt and will try anything to get over this.

I really do appreciate your soft words and kind replies. You’re really good at what you do. I suppose my search for answers will eventually lead me to just having more questions (what a horrible loop) and that doesn’t at all feel productive.

I was going through all the comments and I am so surprised too see that you have responded to most of them.

NEEDED THIS SO MUCH THANK YOU FOR THIS

But for me, I sometimes need reassurance that my thoughts are "somewhat" rational, I need someone to talk with and be like: "Oh yeah, I sometimes feel like the world is going to end too! You're not alone at all!"

Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free during the day or night sit still for a few minutes and observe your breath even if eyes are open. . Being still reduces negative thoughts. Make it a habit. Do the above meditation regularly to have a good life. Read about positive effects of breathing on the brain on Google. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.
Thanks very much doc it's really helpful . Jah bless
I am so glad you find it helpful 😊
This is very helpful
It is SO HARD to imagine the best case scenario... I wish I could that
😥❤️
thank you for your methods
Amazing video!!!!!!
Thank you Amanda.
A person who seriously catastrophrzes is going to think the worst case scenario is totally legit and more likely to happen than not
Some do, yes. 😊
Thank you
You’re welcome 🙏❤️
Good Evening Paige Pradko Madam
Good Evening Dear Ollie ❤😍
@@PaigePradkoTherapy Madam, sorry for replying soo late, I was held up with a lot of things here.. Our state is completely unlocked, Corona scores are around 1500 for the whole state collectively combined now, just a couple of months back it was 50,000.. .. I have conveyed your wishes to my mom for her Birthday - Thank You madam ✌️👏.. Take your time and make videos, you need to be free & have ample time, I can understand.... He needs to be careful there
Thank you for being understanding about the pause in new videos. And yes, you are so wise about Ollie and animals in general. They live their lives to their fullest…despite injuries. I am so happy to hear that covid cases are continuing to go down in your region. I am hopeful that this trend will continue. So good to hear from you, as always. 🙏❤️
That's so helpful.
I am so happy to hear that 🙏❤️
thanks
You’re welcome 🙏
Re my last comment, I realise that just writing it down is helpful at this difficult moment.
So true…just writing it down can calm us
I don’t think I’m actually capable of separating Scientific data from my thought process but I do understand the question. Ok. . . Everything in quotations are from experts within their respected fields.
As far as I understand it my feelings about abrupt climate change are both logical and data driven. Perhaps it’s not the rational response (?) but Catastrophizing (at least to me) does seem reasonable.
“The amount of heat we have put in the world’s oceans in the past 25 years equals to about five Hiroshima bombs of heat, every second, day and night, 365 days a year.”
That’s a very important analogy because it helps us visualize the level of destruction happening to our Earth’s system. Abrupt climate change is warming our oceans and is the primary cause of “ocean acidification.”
“Scientists estimate that 50-80% of the oxygen production on Earth comes from the ocean. One study for example, found that water in some parts of the tropics had experienced a 40 to 50 percent reduction in oxygen.”
And so it’s logical to conclude that we are destroying the very earth systems that keep us alive. . .
“Billions of tons of carbon are locked away in environments that are currently being destroyed.”
The pace at which climate change is occurring verses the speed at which human activity is required to stop it seems rather unrealistic at this point.
Mark Twain once said. . .
“History may not repeat itself but it sure does rhyme.”
I think that was his savvy way of saying history basically repeats itself. Remember the cognitive inertia thing?
Alright enough negativity for now. I hope at least we can buy ourselves some time. Keep doing what you’re doing it’s important. 😊
Thank you. Now I am catastrophizing! I really do appreciate your comments because it may create more awareness, creative solutions and hopefully positive change.
for me, it is always questioning the unknown
Yes. We will always have to work on accepting the unknown.
sometimes it's too messed up you don't get answers! it's ok to distract yourself and build some routine and then ask, why it was doing or is starting to doing again but slowly
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏
Do you deal with catastrophysing in hemiplegic stroke survivors?
I’m sorry that happened to you. That must be very challenging.
Here is a video that may help further.

Thank you very much Paige for that very helpful video. I have a mild form of bipolar, I worry constantly about so many things and this usually starts me catastrophising.
Its also very interesting to hear that this can happen because of our brain wiring and that I have to change this wiring to stop this happening.
I do have a very close knit family who will always tell me when I am catastrophising, sometimes not helpful when I`m really anxious about something, but they will always try to talk me out of it :-)
Now I need to work on doing it!
I am really gonna try to use your methods to help with this, its not helpful for me or my family.
I`m really looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Thank you for your comment, Mary. I hope the videos are helpful.
Your great 😊
I'm experiencing it.. should i consult psychiatrist? I
I would suggest a mental health therapist or self help versus a psychiatrist. ❤️
