"Couldn't give a flying f- I couldn't care less". Nice save there Baz
"The atrocity that was the Spice Girls". I knew there was a reason why I like you, young sir.
Kate Bush is a genius agreed. Deserved, if only for the exposure it might afford her career, which is greatly under exposed and not recognized enough particularly amongst the current female club of artists. ( At least publicly.). Good work as usual Classic Album review!
In my mind it isn't a "Rock and Roll" hall of fame, it's an "American Popular Music" hall of fame. Under that label, a lot of these nominees suddenly make a lot more sense. I mean, look, you already have the likes of Miles Davis, Bob Marley, and BB King inducted as performers and others like Hank Williams, Louis Armstrong, and Woody Guthrie in the "early influences" category. Those are all absolute musical legends, but not exactly what you'd call "rock stars." In an all-encompassing popular music canon, though? No doubt about it. And also emphasis on the "American" part of it, because it's clearly about music that made a dent on this side of the pond. I mean bands like Slade and Joy Division definitely deserve a chance to be nominated and debated at some point, at the very least, but they made so little impression on the American market that I'd put their odds of ever getting in at just barely above nil.
The New York Dolls did more than 2 albums. They started a second live in 2006 with David Johansen and Syl Sylvain on the helm and very astonishingly they managed to get the vibe of the original band back alive. The first two studio albums after the comeback actually stand up to the 70s classics. After that, they got stuck in a routine, at least in my opinion. One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This (2006) and 'Cause I Sez So (2009) are definitely worth checking out.
Their 3 comeback albums are excellent, “One day it will please us” is a classic, with “dancing backwards” being not quite as good, still I would definitely recommend them to anyone who loves the classic rock and punk sound of the original Dolls. Sadly only David remains.
How can Pat Benatar not be in the Rock Hall? She created the groundwork for many of the female rock stars of the 80's and 90's and beyond. And INXS? A hugely influential band. And Duran Duran? One of the biggest bands of the 80's.
Consider how long they dissed her pattern, Linda Ronstadt. They are to busy putting females like Madonna or Janet Jackson in.
I think Devo should get in for their influence on popular culture and especially their huge, huge influence on Post-Punk.
Influence on culture? Then you can go with Spice girls or MAdonna. We are talking rock music, not 'culture'
Brilliant breakdown, as usual! I fully agree, but would urge you to listen to Devo again with fresh ears. They were uniquely creative musicians, and crafted clever and witty lyrics (Beautiful World is the funniest, seemingly upbeat song actually dripping with an acerbic dismissal of human hypocrisy and blind fashion followers). They also put on an amazing live show which I was born away by when I was fortunate to see them at their height in 1983 at the old classic Palladium in NYC.
I will
Devo are amazing, definitely not for everyone, but still extremely influential, talent musicians.
DEVO was introduced to me by way of Uncontrollable Urge. What a quirky, simple, catchy, outside the box song it was. Keep in mind I had already been exposed to Kiss, Zep, Sabbath, Rush, Yes, Young, Eagles, Tull, UFO... I don't think they will appeal to everyone no matter how many listens you give them but I love their music and feel they deserve a spot along side bands like the Talking Heads, The Cure, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Midnight Oil... Having said all this, the R&R Hall of Fame is an absolute classic example of elite music snobs who refuse to acknowledge popular bands that they, for whatever reason, can't relate to.
@@markkaeppel4990 Agree! My taste is very much of a kind with the aesthetic Barry has clearly enjoyed cultivating and explores beautifully here and to which we of like taste gravitate. Devo may not have an obvious place in our implicit, shared discography And yet, and yet...
Joe Jackson, PJ Harvey, Graham Parker...get 'em in there!
Yeah... Joe Jackson. I'd put him in just based on "I'm The Man". Seriously, he is the man and deserves to be in.
I feel like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would perhaps benefit from simply being called the "Popular Music Hall of Fame." It's less catchy of a title, but perhaps more in the spirit of the direction the institution has taken.
*Modern Popular Music Hall of Fame
just a few more years until Billie Eilish and Cardi B are in the RnRHoF.
It is always bewildering to me (well, bewildering is a strong word seeing I really don't give a good goddamn about Jann Wenner tribute to his own fatuous vanity and personal uselessness that is the RRHoF, or the "piss stain"as it shall forever henceforth ever be known) that a guy who has had more hits that the Beatles and The Rolling Stones and is perhaps, historically, the single most seminal figure in British Rock and Roll, plus his backing band who had 30 odd hits by themselves and shaped the sound of the electric guitar to this day have never even been nominated. Even you didn't put them on your quick list of neglected and overlooked artists :-)
But, Cliff Richard and the Shadows were eligible for entry on the first ever ballot and should have been elected. But no. So there goes any hope of credibility they could have had, on day one.
Well, at least the finally got around to putting T Rex in.
Somehow the terms "Cliff Richard"and "seminal" just don't seem to go together 😉
Kate bush should have her own hall of fame.
Iron maiden will get into the rock n roll hall of fame. 😀👍🤘🎸
They deserve to be.
@@classicalbum that's right. 😀👍🤘🎸
Let's hope...
@@j.j.4150 me too. 😀👍🤘🎸
Love the review. Give Devo a listen. They are very strange but very good and they are not just about Whip It. The last album they did Something For Everybody is amazing. I have been a spud fan for about 40 years and they definitely deserve to be in there.
I will do
Absolutely... see my response to another Devo comment.
Can't understand why they haven't inducted or even nominated Jethro Tull.
I'd feel better about many of these nominees if the Hall just changed its name to the _Modern Popular Music_ Hall of Fame.
I have said for years why not Richard and Karen Carpenter???? I am serious here....they and Bread created a whole new genre called Soft Rock...I have been told they are not rock....hmmm....what genre is Whitney Houston or Janet Jackson??? Many rockstars themselves worship and chunter on about Karen's influence... Hmmmm..Goodbye to Love is rock and maybe the first power ballad...
Hmmmm...it is hypocritical isn't it???? I gave up on the R&R Hall many years ago. I love your channel!!!
Induct The Go-Go's.Tony
I’m bemused, as always, by their choices. While many of these artists deserve our respect, they’re just not Rock and Roll. Great video. Cheers
I am glad to see Iron Maiden and Devo on the list this year. I am going to vote for them and the Go Go's. They need to nominate Styx, Duran Duran, Dio and Jethro Tull to start with. Its about time for these bands.
Is it FAME or TALENT? ....Music Hall of talent gets my vote
The whole HOF could work but it needs a serious makeover. Only problem is The Modern Music Hall of Fame just doesn’t sound as cool. If you could swing something like this name you could then have various wings within the hallowed halls R&B wing, Metal Wing, Jazz Wing, and of course The Rock n Roll Wing along with a few others. Just a thought.
Nick Drake . Got cheated out of the twenty seven club . Now this . To bad the R&R H'O'F don't matter ...
Judas Priest in an R&B HOF. mic drop. Greatness!
The Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame is the arbiter of good taste and musical quality. If ever I am interested in familiarising myself with a new band, I first check whether they are inductees and if they are not, I ignore them.
Yeah...
You didn't quote from your notes! Something terrible must have happened!
Warren Zevon - where is he?
Thanks for mentioning Tull. Not surprised really. The US rock literati have always given the shortest shrift to Prog acts. Anti-intellectualism runs deep in America. “Keep the music simple! Polyrhythms and chord changes hurt my head!”
The Smiths, Thin Lizzy and the B'52s !
I agree with almost everything you said. Anyway, I can only hope Iron Maiden; Kate Bush, Foo Fighters and Tina Turner will get into the HALL.
Thin Lizzy
Brian Eno, Pat Benatar, The Smiths? Jethro Tull? Nuff said.
yes
Pat Benetar didn't get in last year, Jethro Tull should have been in a long time ago, Humble Pie, and Steppenwolf should be in, and Ted Nugent is not in. because of his political views? Based on talent, Ted should be in. But I quit caring a long time ago. I just wanted to listen to what your opinion was, and I am in agreement.
Kraftwerk WAS nominated. I remember voting for them a few years ago. I think they were on the same ballot as Yes.
They need to be in
I’m glad you gave The Smiths a mention even though it’s a long shot
If the Rock Hall wanted a few Box Tickers should of nominated The Special's ✌
Four names are nobrainers: Kate Bush, Mary J Blige, NY Dolls and Todd Rundgren
Blue Öyster Cult, Van Der Graaf Generator. Some of the best bands will never be inducted.
Rock pretty much covered all of popular music after Elvis, anyone who had a guitar type of thing. What was folk became folk rock and so forth, that's why they boo'd Dylan when he went electric. The whole thing is for money and egos, so I guess that's rock in a nutshell.
Flying F...Couldn’t care less, nice save
When does Bieber get in?
They should replace Ricky Warwick for Dionne Warwick.
isn't the r&r hall of fame
a bowling alley?
If Maiden gets in I wonder if DiAnno will be invited or even Dennis Wharton. Why in Gods name is Phil Lynott or Lizzy not in this.
Its really just a publicity stunt to drum up business for the Hall, who need to sell tickets. I really can't imagine anyone rerouting their summer holiday road trip by 6 hours just to see the LL Cool Jay exhibit.
Which would comprise, in it's entirety, a Kangol Hat and a Lasonic TRC-931 Ghetto Blaster, no doubt.
Kraftwerk should be in for sure - if they are not recognised as paying their dues by now, they never will be. I do often ask myself though, do people outside the US really care that much about the RRHF? I do feel there is a prevalent American bias when it comes to the nominees... and if acts haven't made an impact in the US market in particular they really don't stand a cat in hell's chance. Perhaps they should stop pretending to be an international hall of fame and amend the name to the American Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. A British heavy rock band like Iron Maiden that fulfils all of the requisites in the face of competition from a rock god like LL Cool J? Good luck boys.
Ah but then again, would one call Kraftwerk 'rock n' roll'? It does get tedious deciding what does and doesn't qualify if we're being strict about that term.
Poor conflicted RRHOF. It needs to stay relevant in order to maintain interest (and funding). YET things which are "uncool" are more deserving of entry. ...Punching itself in the face then collecting pennies off the floor.
the antithesis of Rock and Roll is any 'hall of fame'
The R & R Hall of Fame has no credibility with me. The problems with the R & R HOF are not new. I no longer care who gets in and who doesn't. Eventually, everyone who ever set foot inside a recording studio will be a member.
Hall of Fames biggest mistake was the name from the beginning. It should have been called "Music Hall of Fame" or something like it. If you look at who has won over the years there are plenty people who have very little with Rock and Roll to do. Seriously look at the winners from each year... I would say almost half of anyone in there isn't rock and roll at all. For every Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry or Led Zeppelin there is The Four Tops, James Brown and Louis Armstrong. LIke you with Dionne Warwick I don't mind them at all as musicians or legends but are they rock and roll? Are others like Ray Charles, Fats Domino or The Drifters?
I like the ceremony of Rock And Roll Hall of Fame and it's nice for some smaller or more "forgotten acts" to shine an extra time but the business about who is going in and why is very dogdy to me. Jay-Z from this year is one of the biggest names in hiphop. Probably outsold many of those already in.. But Rock and Roll? Does even he consider himself in there?
Why is Metal which probably is the biggest active genre in rock since many years not liked in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Well its the ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame not the hip hop hall of fame, let the rapers have their own and if they already do (not being a fan of that genre i dont know) let them use it.
I have loved music all of my life. The so called hall of fame is a mere joke. Let's face it Motorhead aren't in it so by default its a nothing more than an enterprising pile of uneducated twits looking at their bank accounts each year.Actually it makes our Brit awards almost plausible? Mick Fleetwood has left the room BTW.
blah blah blah sums it up. they are lucky rush showed up. i suppose milli vanilli will be picked.madonna in no tina turner. yeah.
Maiden are NOT in???? Wtf!!!! Ok I lost interest already then...😲😲😲😲😡
They have been nominated... I hope they get in
Enjoying your vids, but to F**k with the R&R HOF, F**k them.
Sorry, disagree about Foo Fighters. Nothing original about them and the songs are not worthy of the hall of fame. Of course better than Journey and Bon Jovi who should never have been included
