You mentioned the Great Emu War but neglected to mention that the emus actually won the first battle?
The emus did I beleive
Rachel T That's what he said.
pihsrats "Won." More like didn't die immediately.
I know mispronunciation is John's thing, but I find his pronunciation of Emu funny.
99thTuesday Is that not how you pronounce emu? (e-moo, right?)
I feel like I'm the only gamer on earth who's never played World of Warcraft. And I'm okay with that.
Jake Pillsbury your not missing much :) I tried to get into it because my GF at the time loved it, and I do like RPG's, & loot collection games (like Diablo) But WoW never grabbed me.
I've never played it either. I'm quite proud of that.
Jake Pillsbury you didn't miss much so its all good
Jake Pillsbury I feel ya' feels good to not waste time on a game like wow
Jake Pillsbury I've never played it either. Too expensive, plus I'm not the RPG type.Well, not the third-person, massive-armor, everything-is-magic type RPG.
I'll play the Elder Scrolls, but you won't catch me dead playing anything like WoW, Runescape, Torchlight, etc.
Hank: "2/3rds of the people on earth have never seen snow"
Me: "Lucky Bastards..."
Everytime I see that its John I seriously get so happy :)
I only touch my mustache 759 times a day, thank you very much
Hang on... A puppy ate half the manuscript of Of Mice And Men?
That explains a lot. Namely the dead puppy.
Just to be clear, NASCAR doesn't require a state issued driver's license but they do require a NASCAR license which has to be renewed regularly.
Caitlin W well you just have to do a convincing hillbilly accent and you've got it.
Ze Rubenator oh, I'm sure it's not this simple, you also have to know which one is the left side
Ze Rubenator 666Tomato666 Actually you have to be able to avoid the wall but nice tries. Being rude to an entire sport is really cool.
Caitlin W "You have to be able to avoid the wall." Are you trying to defend the sport or make fun of it? Cause if that's all you have to know then you're qualified once you've learned to "turn left".
Caitlin W and you avoid the wall by turning... right?
As a swede the last one felt like pure pain
Jim Eriksson Samma här!
Jim Eriksson Because you're one of those weird Swedes that doesn't like the snow and cold? :p (I have a friend like that.) Or because you're astonished that so many people have never seen snow? (I had only seen snow twice by the time I was 22, when I moved to the northern U.S.)
Kala Reshana
For me its both. And acctually Swedish people dont like snow that much. Sure its pretty in the beginning, but after a while you are tired of it. And it is heavy to shovel away. But I was also suprised by how many have never seen snow. Its wierd for me. I just watched a video of adult australians seeing snow for the fisrt time and they start to act like kids and play around in it.
Not hard to believe I've only seen snow twice in my life the second time was this year
Jim Eriksson Same, I live in the Northern USA.
You can't just tell us there was a war against emus and not elaborate on that...
Figgy5119 Just some bored Australian WWI veterans turned farmers that saw a nuisance.
Figgy5119 #NeverForgetTheEmuWar
Figgy5119 The best part is, the operation failed to reduce nuisance populations of emus. The Australians effectively lost the Great Emu War.
Figgy5119 but you can google it
Figgy5119 Hilarious military screw ups.
You left out the interesting part of the dreaming in black-and-white fact: that number is steadily going down, because whether people dream in black-and-white or colour seems to be influenced by whether they had black-and-white or colour television as children.
Em Cameron I think I dream in black and white
141 eggs in 8 minutes? Someone call Cool Hand Luke.
Arent liquids like the water starch mixture called non-Newtonian fluids?
Ionlymadethistoleavecoments Yes, it is a classification that defines the viscosity of the liquid.
Ionlymadethistoleavecoments Specifically it is a shear thickening fluid because it gets more viscous when you apply pressure. There are also shear thinning fluids which have the opposite properties.
Lemme guess. Meredith was sitting in the weekly staff meeting one day and mentioned in passing to no one in particular, "Over the years, I've collected over a hundred facts that can't be categorized into a list." John walked in about then (always late to the staff meeting) and responded, "Hey,lets just slap them in a Mental Floss video." The rest, as they say, is history.
I was expecting bugs bunny to wake up saying "what's up, doc?"
I have to say that was one of the most informative videos I have ever watched. Fantastic job guys
Fascinating. The Cat wasn't in the script, and 95% of the Oceans are unexplored. I learn something every episode, great job Mental Floss Team!
So basically, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was wrong when it said you could survive in the total vacuum of space unprotected for about 30 seconds, because in fact you can live 1-2 minutes. Thanks Mental Floss!
It's amazing how many of these were in the Mental Floss magazines. Just read those people! Also, Mental Floss, I keep catching you reusing facts in the magazines as well. Sometimes once or twice a month!
I love Mental Floss fact videos WAYYY more than matthew santoros...
dont know why everyone loves that guy so much
Fact number 101,
Snow way!!!
I played this at 75% speed so I could fully understand it, now I know what John Green would sound like with a beer buzz.
Can I get a source on that Jessica thing? Cause I'm having an existential crisis now
Jessica Bagdovitz en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_(given_name)
Jessica Bagdovitz Yup. Same here. Paused the video to google "Shakespeare Jessica"
Jessica Bagdovitz No worries! Shakespeare's Jessica was pretty cool. I mean, she kinda caused her dad to freak out, but he was just as concerned about the money she stole as he was about the fact that she stole it to run away and get married. (The play is The Merchant of Venice, btw.)
Jessica Bagdovitz merchant of venice, much hijinks happened in that play
Jessica Bagdovitz It's just an English reworking of the Hebrew name Yiskah, which is fitting since Shakespeare used it for a Jewish character.
I need to watch this twice !
Great facts
I have a feeling most people will forget 99% of the content of this video a few hours after watching it. SO FAST.
+J-Star-Roar It's been five minutes and I forgot almost all of it already.
+J-Star-Roar All the more reason to rewatch it.
Yay! A video with John Green!
One of my favorite episodes ever
1:37 Says the guy with a net worth of $5 million
Yo, french major and Canadian here.
You say dinner comes from a french word that means breakfast, this is mostly wrong.
The word "dine" in english comes from the Old French verb "disner" which means to dine, I'm unaware whether it was used to refer to breakfast as well, but arguably Old French is not really french. The word "dîner" does exist in french, but it doesn't mean breakfast. In Canada is means lunch, and in France it means supper. I can't be sure about other french speaking areas, but I imagine it's generally one of the two.
If you're curious, here are the french words for meals! :D
Meal: un repas
To Eat: Manger/Bouffer
Food: la nourriture/la bouffe
Breakfast: le petit déjeuner (F), le déjeuner (C)
Lunch: le déjeuner (F), le dîner (C)
Supper: le dîner (F), le souper (C)
Snack: une collation/une casse-croûte
I came here to make this point! Thanks for saying this in a much clearer and more informative way than I would have. :)
Well a Harry Potter musical/parody was created anyways and I think we can all agree that the world became a better place because of it
Alyssa Miller Much better than what Michael Jackson would have done.
Michael Jackson revolutionized the music industry. Many of the most notable artists pride themselves on him being a massive inspiration. Also it's no secret that JK Rowling is an absolute twat.
lol i was touching my mustache when the fact about touching mustaches came on :P
This was amazing.
I had to stop and rewind a lot but I got through it and enjoyed it. Thanks!
Quite interesting you should mention being watched in China , John : actually I am currently in the country for business and just tried watching your show using a bit of trickery, works like a charm... when the connection is good enough! Long live Mental Floss, also in the Empire of the Middle!
OCD question, how do you keep all the stuff on the wall so clean? Or is it a festering pile of dust and you only clean the toy you zoom in on?
Yay John is back
Greatest episode ever!
They should do a countdown of Interesting Facts about Victorian England.
I love facts!
My sociology professor just told the fact about bananas being the number one seller for Wal-Mart in class today. I wonder if he watches Mental Floss.
So Guardians of the Galaxy loses a plot hole
likenem They still shouldn't have frost forming on their bodies or have all those burst capillaries disappear as soon as they're on board. But it's far from the worst depiction of space exposure in Sci-Fi - the most accurately I've seen it handled was in Farscape.
They were alien and half alien we don't know about their physiology..
skysthe limitvideos True, true.
Star-Lord survived that purple thingy so . . . screw logic.
gwkowe
I said loses "a" not all of them
dont know how much of this is true but it made my day! cheers from Sweden!
WRONG!! "Dinner" actually comes from the french word "dinner" which means... dinner.
(The word for breakfast is "petit déjeuner")
Grégoire Lapoire It could have been older french, Quebec French uses different words for the meals of the day than France French; so maybe it came from the word meaning breakfast and then moved to meaning 'the least meal of the day' when it became common in english. I don't speak french, so I could be COMPLETELY wrong, but maybe thats what happened
He may mean dinner comes from déjuneur but thats lunch anyway!
Actually, the word jeuner translates "to fast" or to go without eating for a time. Déjeuner literally translates to breakfast. So, petit déjeuner = little breakfast and is usually the first meal of the day and déjeuner = breakfast which actually comes around mid day.
Grégoire Lapoire check your stuff before shouting that it's wrong mate
***** And in Quebec, we use the word "diner" to mean "to have lunch" and "souper" as "to have dinner/supper"
I was absolutely touching my mustache when that fact came up.
No one is going to believe me on this but about 4 years ago I peeled off boardwalk on a McDonalds french fry and thought that there was no way that this was the winning piece. My mom threw it away without me knowing 3 days before I got park place as well. 5 hours of tearing through the trash later, nothing. It was gone forever. I plan to share this story with reddit one day but haven't gotten around to it
Lucky 2/3s, we have snow today here in western New York. Though it's nothing new, 8 months out of 12 so far. Great list this week thanks!
I have no idea how I missed that Norway knighted a penguin. I was born here, and didn't even know that our royals had the power to knight someone...
Disneyworld employees can have beards, but they can't be in the process of growing one when they're at work.
Wow, so interesting!
2:58 the stoners hahaha
I have never seen falling snow!
I've never seen snow, but we also have to deal with 50°C in summer, so we're quite even.
the fact that german's recognised beer as a food until 2013 is something i did not know but it also does not surprise me.
I can't believe you left out that the corn starch suspension that you can walk on is actually and literally called "Oobleck".
Holy shit what an endless stream of knowledge! I'm glad I only had to go back in 2 moments lol.
this was VERY entertaining. Love random info and while watching shared a few with my family. loved to see their reactions. thanx
I've seen snow!!! 😜
Nifty facts!
"Nigga it's snow! Nigga I've never seen snow! Oh my god Nigga! Snow my Nigga! It's f***in snow Nigga!"
The reaction I got when I brought snow down from my house in the mountains. To the central valley in California.
Maybe it's because I'm Canadian, but that last one blew my mind. I actually feel slightly traumatised. How have that many people never seen snow???
Pleasant and interesting, laughed out loud at 5:17.
I love how he says E-moo
that last fact... I thought it said "2/3 of the world has not seen this SHOW." Thank you, John Green, for saying SNOW and correcting my brain :D
I love that fact about my name! I don't know if he actually invented it but it was certainly the first written use of it :)
I have never seen snow at first I thought i was alone
Some other countries classify beer as food too. They do it for television advertisement. You can advertise food, but not alcohol. ;)
I am part of the 2/3rds of people who have yet to see snow.
Extra-savory, tasty facts!
...I've never see snow. And those I know that have either love it or hate it.
As an ex-Comcast costumer service worker I can confirm Boulder, Colorado has one of the chillest and most understanding populations, that's no surprise, legalize.
Yes hes back!
He's a spooky ghost.
I've seen snow on the ground, but I've never seen snow fall from the sky.
tangled, worth every penny.
At first I thought it said two thirds of the world's population has never seen this show!
At the end of the video; I feel you guys should have mentioned Matthew Santoro's, "50 AMAZING Facts to Blow Your Mind!" series. The same way you did when you recommended Numberphile's, "Why do UA-cam views freeze at 301?" video at the end of your "Why is 301 used in UA-cam for view count? - Big Questions - (Ep. 28)".
6:03 Aye, 'tis too true. The suburb I live in just north of Denver has four cannabis dispensaries, and just this year got its first Starbucks. Weed is better than coffee.
After this past winter I wish I had never seen snow before.
THE GREAT EMU WAR!!!
#NeverForgetTheEmuWar
I have a coworker in Puerto Rico who has never seen snow... his last name is Nieves, the Spanish word for snow.
Colorado listens to the mellowest music and has the largest number of dispensaries... Blind coincidence is amazing
That number represents the number of permutations of a deck of cards...but are those really the odds that a combination has happened before? Considering, for instance, most decks will have at some point been shuffled from being in order, and many decks will have been shuffled badly...
Also, the odds that you're shuffle has resulted in a permutation that has happened before HAS to be increasing because the number of permutations that have previously happened is constantly increasing. I feel like it would be more accurate to say those are the odds of any two decks being shuffled the same way.
Wow!
can you make more of these videos with a ton of facts? they are enjoyable to watch in my opinion.
Ok my forensics speech this year was about the great emu war and I nearly died laughing when I saw this video! So this is one of the quotes from my speech which was said by the General in change of the operation "if we had a military division with the bullet carrying capacity of these birds they could face any army in the world. They can face machine guns with the invulnerability of tank". And the emus totally won!
I Love the Mr Yuck Sticker!!
3:54...heck yeah! Love Shakespeare! Thank you for my moniker, sir!
Lucky 2/3 of people! I wish i never saw snow!
A Very Potter Musical...the only musical harry potter will ever need :)
you could think of a good Geico commercial :+)
omfg I live 10 minutes away from Boulder my town almost got mentioned on mental floss!
"The song 'Every Breath You Take' by The Police is about stalking". Well DUH. I first encountered this song in a guitar class (What can I say, I don't get out much) and my immediete reaction was, "My god those lyrics are horrifying". I'm not quite sure how you can listen to that song and imagine that it's about anything but stalking.
"Dîner" in French means lunch or dinner depending on your region. "Déjeuner" or ”petit déjeuner” (differing regionally as well) would mean breakfast.
Rabbit Show Jumping? Adorable.
Fawn Show Jumping? Adeerable.
Picasso's name = CLITO RUIZ... say it out loud... bwahahaha
I just finished reading your book The Fault In Our Stars and it was beautiful!
ps I also love your list vids :)
i love the larry donnell story
Who the hell thought "Every Breath You Take" was a romantic song??? If you just stopped and listened for a second, you can easily tell those lyrics aren't exactly "romantic".
Oblique!!!
Conway wow, 5 years ago but with only one like. Which is me.
Im from Colorado. Im baffled its the calmest music listeners
I'm kinda shocked 2/3 of people haven't seen snow
