- Our Rivers: Yesterday and Today has been designed in response to area educators' requests for additional classroom resources after having participated with their students in the Pittsburgh Gateway Clipper Rivers of Steel Tour.
Our Rivers: Yesterday and Today - The story of the Monongahela River is one of our nation's history, our industrial revolutions and one of the men and women whose labors, previously and presently, earned the Monongahela River the title of "Ruhr" -- The River of Sweat. This complex industry is composed of a wide range of technical, trade and labor positions necessary to maintain a healthy inland port system. The focus of this portion of the project is on the workforce needed to maintain, man and repair the barges, tugs, locks, dams, terminals and rescue services enabling the diversity of river transport. The curriculum offered here, along with a video program of the present waterway industries and services, provide a look at the rich past, present life and future hopes of this vital economic underpinning of Pittsburgh's intricate network of living waterways.

As a kid I worked on the Mon moving around sand and gravel barges for unloading. Always had to tie off the barges real good when I saw the Humphries coming !!
Great video !!! I worked on the Mon River for years.I was one of the deck hands on the barges, and and this video took me back to my old job.
Wish i could show my grandpa this. He was born and raised in rices landing. I live in Crucible now 💖
