Hey mate... I once tried three different cheap fish soaked in Guiness beer for 12 hrs and then frihed in flour mixed with a little bit citrous salt and cayenne pepper. .. crazy good.... Please try it out. Highly recommend it...
So true. I used to work as a mate on the partyboats in Freeport NY and folks would beat the shit out of the dogfish. I definitely lost some tips from chewing people out about it..
I watched another UA-camr prep a spiny dogfish. He killed it, eviscerated it, and skinned it immediately. Said that stops the ammonia flavour from getting into the meat. Then he braised it with a bunch of veggies. Said the meat was textured a bit like crabmeat.

Called Huss or Rock Salmon in UK 'fish and chip' shops. Cod or Haddock are the usual choices for most though. I like Huss personally but not too much as it's very rich in flavour.
Spurdog is sometimes used as the fish in fish and chips, it is a bit coarse and you can always tell spurdog because of the heavy grey patches on its sides and strong taste, the best flavoured fish used is Bull Huss..These little ground sharks are usually sold as “Rock Salmon”in the south of England.
Our Fish and chips are normally Cod or Haddock.Very few people eat those fish, what we call Spurdog...We don,t get them from shallow beaches.Normally they are caught from really deep cold water in the Western Scottish sea lochs. Most of them have been wiped out now though.
I could not eat them…..growing up commercial fishing we caught so many dogs, we called them “green eyes” they have weird bright green eyes at night. They do stink after they die. Your a brave man. Pacific Northwest
Don't give up on the Bonito. I think I caught mine around May 20th last year. I know it's been warming up a little faster this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are found nearshore over the next week or two.
Elias, may I be permitted to correct you please. What you call a dogfish, we herein England call a Smoothound and it is not served up as fish and chips. The most common fish in the chip shop is the Atlantic Cod, followed by Haddock and then Plaice. 30 yrs ago something called rock and chips was served up which was also known as Rock Salmon but it known by us as dogfish. This is a completely different species to the Smoothound. The Lesser Spotted Dogfish is vey common on our shores and strangley, is treated as badly as your dogfish by most anglers.
Spiny dog fish are actually endangered in the UK so they aren't sold in fish and chips over here. Well they shouldn't be by law. The most common fish in fish and chip shops is haddock or cod, but hake and ling are really making a rise. Hake and Megrim are my personal favourite fish to eat from UK waters.
Me and my grandpa went for stripers late last year and the spiny boys were the only thing that kept us from getting skunked, I found a bit of respect for them that day haha
Hey EliasV. It's amazing anyone can catch Whiting, because it's rare if we catch it here in New York because of commercial fishing for that fish. Anyway, take care.
Are you fishing out of WB Elias? if so the Spanish and Bonito have showed up really good along with some small kings from about 2-5miles. Flounder are still about 10 miles but should be closer soon
@@EliasVFishing they were busting all over 2 mile Tuesday while I was searching to see if the flounder moved oil yet and we started casting jigs to them, biggest we caught was 6lbs. then had some good Spanish with blue mixed in Wednesday pulling yozuri DD's
Best thing with sharks is to trunk them within 1 minute of killing them - remove the head plus cut the fins off and gut them. For prep, don't soak in anything as they go mushy then beer batter is A+
As a Cornish lad living next to arguably one of the fishing hubs of England rock salmon/dogfish are eaten yes but it's like....6th or 7th on the list. It's almost always going to be cod, haddock or pollock. Halibut and plaice are not unusual either but dogfish is mainly eaten and i'm not trying to be ageist by my father's generation growing up in ww2.
Whiting don't mind the weather, and they don't mind PBR either. Glad you've tried "Fishbites". The only varitey that hasn't worked in the surf for us is the Squid ... Sandflea shines at the beach, and Shrimp is universal. In choppy and/or stained water, Clam does the trick. A sweeper jig w/ half a Crab, versus a jig with Fishbites Crab "fast dissolve", would be an interesting comparison.
@@EliasVFishing They've worked on Pompano at both ends of the Panhandle for decades, mostly in white or Pink, on two dropper rigs like you were using, but with somewhat larger float & bead before the hooks. Normal practice is 1/0 or 2/0 circle hooks, but sometimes I'll go several sizes smaller. The one-ounce lead is about max without a top-shot, but 2 - 3 oz. are usually what's needed to get far enough out. ( Found out the hard way that braid can't take casting strain for long.) Early AM and high water are prime time for Pompano, with shrimp flavor on upper, and Sandflea on the lower hook. Usually I cut pieces from the strips, but the precut are fine as well. The "chunks" are larger & thicker, made for bottom fishing. They make regular, and quick release versions, but I use "quick" all the time. The various baits, and the paddle-tail & fluke cousins, can be ordered from the factory website. The price isn't bad, even with shipping. When not in use, wrap them in a plastic ziplock stashed in the refrigerator. They can last a long time that way. Beware store-bought baits that aren't flexible through the bag. Old, dried-out, ones are stiff and off-color.
One more thing: the beach you were on appears to be featureless and straight, with a very gradual slope. That's a lot like some areas of the Eastern Panhandle. The spots most likely to have fish are subtle ... the wash-outs are very small, and scouting the shore at low tide can make reading the water easier later on. Look along the shore for accumulations of small shells. They can indicate bait-stuffs in the sands offshore. If you don't get hit in 15 - 20 minutes, move. Either coming in, or going out, you want high water that's At or Over 68 degrees.
Sharks put urea into their flesh for buoyancy. It is not just released when caught. Soaking in milk does help. Good video, they make great nuggets baked!
The Brits have used it for F&C for years. When I was in the business I'd use it in fish stews & the like. It breaks up into fine pieces. I always found it to soft for a whole lot more.
