My thought pattern: Opponent is tapped out with no fliers to block my fliers. Skip to Attack phase, attack with all for lethal to win the match. Opponent's thought pattern: I'mma gonna mutate a creature, just so I can see all those pretty scry 1 on the stack... this is gonna be fun!
Thats not the play pattern of someone who has a quest or is at all mindful of other people's time for that matter.

At the end of Match 3 28:20~ I appreciate you actually going in and telling us why someone may have surrendered. It makes magic more accessible imo.
It seems the key issue here is the fact that the Rat Colony is a glass cannon. Artifacts that provide lifelink or trample probably would have been helpful in getting past token creature blockers and keeping you alive, especially for the card draw enchantments that cost health. Just a thought.

After endless months of watching LVD, I finally watched him conceding a game
The rare LVD concede. Opponent was basically just playing solitaire at that point

Piper of the swarm would be a great inclusion in this deck. It gives all your rats menace as well as letting you gain control of creatures like their commander

Yes! But.. they might also be a content creator, and showing the deck go off (much like how LVD does sometimes).
Imagine it is the FIRST time their deck wins and they just want to enjoy it.

One time i thought i had a clean win but it ended up being a blunder that lost me the game

cool deck! I played against a Marrow-gnawer + Rat Colony deck yesterday and it was quite an experience. I love the Wickerwing Effigy, not only is it really good in this deck, but thematically it turns the rats into bats :D

This deck is quite strong when it get's going (and it get's going very consistently) and it also seems extremely budget friendly for paper commander deck. I wonder if there are some worthy inclusions (that are not covered by MTGArena) for a Commander deck. Seems like a great addition to my Commander Deck's collection. :)

The Rat Colony is 5-6 on TCGPlayer.
I also looked up Rat Colony prices out of curiosity and they're not as cheap as I would like. Makes me consider opening Dominaria packs just to get them!

Strange feeling on one hand i got in to Legenda video on the other with a random netdeck pile. Wish it was with my pet Nahiri dumpsterfire that i started all the way back when it was 60 card brawl.
There are some fun things to work with in MtGA. I'm pretty sure rat colony is one of these ♥️
this is an awesome deck. this is the rare moment I went and crafted it. its also pretty budget with the common pack rats. sweet and busted tribe, they're always annoying lol. XD

Solid guide and video. Very well explained and informative for new players. I feel like theres a few rat cards that are a must run in rat decks though. Nashi & Okiba Gang are insanely strong. If you have excess mana, discarding 2 of their cards is massive, as well as playing something of yours/theirs with Nashi. Drainpipe and burglar rat to make then discard a card is very strong also. Blightbelly rat for 1 more toxic & prolif is always worth it imo too. These 5 rats all have the 'rat' tag anyways, plus you still have 35 Rat Colony which is ample. 🐀
Changeling outcast is insane for 1 mana and is a common. He also cant be blocked. Would highly recommend that guy too. Pillar of Origins is solid, as is Adaptive Automaton in case you overlooked or forgot about those.
Thanks! Looked at all of those but still decided against them. The Ninjutsu rats are not always the easiest to enable and without it they aren't impactful enough. Having 1-drops for curve can be nice, but with my plan of aggressively mulling into ramp or a cost reducer it's less of a concern. Don't really care about the Toxic from Karumonix so prefer another Colony over Blightbelly. Pillar is a bit too limiting since it doesn't ramp into some of the more expensive cards and that can be a huge drawback. The one card I retroactively added was Shadowspear for some Trample and Lifegain, suits our 40 Colony plan quite well.

Appreciate the explanation on each of them, now I understand I was wrong with my thought process and goal with the deck, and the Colony Rats are just better. I figured it was going for toxic, so thanks for also stating its more about damage, and that Karumonix is essentially the rat card draw mechanism. Really stoked to be playing rats in general. I'm about clone your deck and play a few hours with it! 🐀 Look forward to more guides and unique stuff like this in the future!

I found the expensive non-rat cards to be a bit too much. I didnt feel a need to lower the rat spell cost since it is a real low cost anyways. I also put in a lot more removal spells. Breezing through the games, great for farming wins.
Always enjoy seeing relentless decks in action. Did you consider Mirror Box for the Rat Colony toughness boost?

Interested in building this deck irl for home games but need decent replacements for key to the archive, faceless agent, and wickerwing effigy. Any ideas or things that worked well in place of them?
Once you’re no longer limited to cards on Arena there’s way more cards to choose from. I suggest looking for inspiration on EDHRec or doing research on Scryfall using the advanced search function.
These rats provide lotta value.

Is it worth cutting one rat to include the shadow spear to make one big colony trample and offset the life loss from card draw engines?

Could you do an updated Astor list with all the new equipment and such from the past few sets?

The Bladehold war whip and the creature bladegraft aspirant are amazing includes. In fact, all the For Mirrodin equipment in the colors are really good since you can easily end up with equip 0 so you buff up your main attacker and still have an extra creature to pivot to as a blocker.
Also get Quietus Spike. It gives deathtouch and whenever the equipped creature deals damage to a player that player looses half their life.
So add in a source of trample (team pendant is a good one) and a source of doublestrike (Bladehold war whip) and you can cause copious amounts of pain that is nearly unblockable.

While testing the deck someone played a Curse but they made the mistake if naming Karumonix.

Do i need to craft 40 rat colony or just having a playset will enable me to add aditional copies to the deck? I'm really low on commons wildcards cause i use them to progress vault and don't know how mtg arena handles this.
Once you get 4 copies the game will show an infinite sign and you will be able to use as many as you want

I regularly play rats in actual edh. Honestly, I think Relentless Rats is still a better choice than Rat Colony.
That single point of toughness comes up more often that you might expect.
I think the 50 (or 100%) mana cost increase (once a discount is in effect) is probably not worth it.
However the real limiting factor is that Relentless Rats isn't legal in Brawl (I don't think it exists on MTG:A at all)
Actually you did say for EDH, and yeah I'd agree, having a board of X/1's makes you even easier to wipe in a wipe-heavy format

I think the difference is isnt really a rules interaction, it's just doing exactly what it should. Pack Rat's original Power/Toughness is */*, but with Effigy is becomes base 1/1, so the * text (Power and Toughness are each equal to the number of Rats you control) - even thought it's still there - it doesnt take effect since Pack Rat is now 1/1, not a */*. Rat Colony, on the other hand, is a 2/1 with the +1/+0 text, so if it becomes a 1/1 thanks to Effigy, it'll always grow.
Emphasis on "I think"!
I feel like its ability sets it as an */*, then the other ability applies afterwards to override it to a 1/1. It's a matter of ordering
Basically, * /* isn't really a statline, it's just telling you to refer to the card text, and that card text is still being applied, but in such a way that it's immediately overwritten

No Icon of Ancestry?
It was close to making the cut and had it in previous builds, but Rat King provides most of the card draw we need and Icon is quite expensive to activate. The bar for every non-Rat card is just very high.

Voyage and nykthos?
Had Voyage in the deck but ended up cutting it since we don't always get to the 7 mana required. The discount artifacts are great for casting rats but not for other expensive cards. Nykthos could be decent, it's a tradeoff with Stronghold.
@@LegenVD tbf I made the comment after watching the deck tech and when your playing a rat every turn you certainly dont have time to be fortelling and later casting voyage. Nykthos though pays for itself with just the commander while stronghold barely broke even in any of the games you showed. Great video though, thanks!
@@lukesdewhurst Potential issue with Nykthos is early game when you have a cost reducer out it doesn't make black mana to cast a Rat. At least with Stronghold you can filter some black mana even if it doesn't make extra with four Swamps out. There will certainly be moments where Nykthos can be great so it's worth a shot.

Just 4, once you hit 4 copies it lets you put as many as you want in your decks
I used to play ranked historic with a monoblack deck that had 15 swamps and 45 rat colony xD

@@josephmeltzer2726 can't remember, but definitely ran into ixalan's biding, runed halo or any other card that gave them protection against rats and the game was over xD

The polite thing to do is pass back and allow win, and the polite thing to do is just win. Not pull the rug out and prevent people from playing their deserved win out, and also not wasting the other player’s time. Those are two extremes of the spectrum, hence why both are inappropriate.
You are free to resign in this non-competitive format. It is nothing like flipping a table smdh entitled zoomers
