    I love these games and they’re probably my favorites. Great storyline and one of the best region imo. One of the things I found what was missing was the fact we don’t get to see/fight your rival May at her strongest. As we do in other games.. She never had her Pokémon fully evolved.

    Are you considering on making a video on the Stadium series, Colosseum, XD and PBR?

    • @MerryBytes
      @MerryBytes  3 роки тому +1

      I do want to cover the Stadium games, but a big part of the appeal for me is the connectivity with Gen 1 and 2, which doesn't work out very well with emulators. I remember there was a plugin for Project64 if I'm not wrong, but that was with a really old version of it.
      I won't make any promises, but Colosseum and XD will probably come one day since the singleplayer by itself is interesting. PBR is kind of in the same boat as Stadium, only nowhere as interesting since it doesn't have much besides strictly battling.

    • @M3rtyville
      @M3rtyville 3 роки тому +1

      @@MerryBytes Oh, man. I haven't used Project64 for a decade, but I remember using a plugin to get access to my Pokemon Crystal savefile in Stadium 2.
      And I just looked it up and will link it to my comment below this one, because youtube doesn't notify comments with links for some reason
      What bothered me with the emulator and the stadium games is that you have to make sure you alter you remember using the analog stick and it pained me since I always used the D-Pad settings wondering what I did wrong. So you have to do the settings for both in order to move.
      I personally dislike PBR because without your own game, the game is pretty much pointless because you are restricted by 6 rental passes which in all honestly are worthless postgame.
      While Stadium has terrible moveset with Pokemon, the wider range of Pokemon makes it easier to prepare a team for any challenge, even against Silver's broken legendary team.
      And other challenges don't require your own Pokemon, but demand you to use rental ones.

    • @MerryBytes
      @MerryBytes  3 роки тому +1

      Project64 is still around and got a rebirth a couple of years ago, although it has been somewhat overshadowed by others like Mupen64Plus and ParaLLEl. Nintendo 64 emulation is still a bit of a mess, but thankfully not as bad as the old days where you had to fiddle with multiple plugins for everything.
      And yeah, PBR is just entirely bleh. It's basically a paper weight if you don't connect it to the Gen 4 games, whereas Stadium's full rental roster at least gave you something substantial to play with, even if the movesets were gimped. Plus, there's all the other stuff they had like the minigames and the box managing functionality.

    I found RS rather boring games. They removed some really enjoyable things and the lack of backwacks compatibility. Tho Emerald safed Gen 3 for me because it had actual good content and the evil teams are both active. Also you can get all legendaries that RS restricted you from forcing you to buy both.
    Also that generation is the gen where Fire Types you get a pretty awful since you are very long in Water sections full of Water Type Pokemon that resist also fighting type moves, meaning that even the best fire type Blaziken is heavily restricted. Your other options are a late game Vulpix, Slugma the worst fire type, Numbel who has a double weakness to water and Torkoal... freaking Torkoal.
    You are likely going to pick Mudkip just to have a easier time simply because it has the moves to get past most gyms and can actually deal with most Water Types.
    Treeko is the worst starter because its weak stab before reaching lv29, lack of secondary typing and the water types that are common have high special defense combined with a secondary typing so you lack type advantage.
    Still better than Gen 4 where your non-Fire Starter is basicly worthless because of game design despite not having a terrible moveset.
    The only thing I like about ORAS's delta episode is that we can finally catch Deoxys without some stupid guy just handing it over to you. I have never had the chance to experience the Deoxys event in FRLG or Emerald. So that was a nice touch. Would have been nice to be able to travel to faraway island to catch mew.
    Or go to Navel Rock to get both Ho-oh and Lugia instead of making them Ruby or Saphire exclusive putting them in a Hoopa Ring. The Hoopa Ring thing really pisses me off. Unless you watch a stupid Pokemon movie, it never gets explained why legendary Pokemon are coming out from those rings and why you fight in some boring bland background.

    Ah Generation 3. This is where The Decline started. Y'know, since my personal subjective opinion on the franchise is a universal truth and all. That's how things work on the internet, right? Anyway, I've found the increased focus on story, and the forced inclusion of legendary pokemon in the story, of pokemon games starting in gen 3, to be a real turn off. Part of it is because, frankly, the pokemon games are really poorly written. They try to improve things in the remakes, but honestly ORAS still just utterly fails on a narrative level for me. But a bigger part of it is that, the more the games try to focus on the story, the less they're focused on the core appeal of the game: Going on a journey across the land, searching far and wide, having an adventure as a kid and catching these amazing creatures. The more you raise the stakes, the more you shove legendary pokemon in my face instead of letting them be things I stumble across through exploration of my own volition, the more you try to make your *KIDS GAME* INCLUDE A *MISANTHROPE NEARLY SUCCEEDING AT COMMITTING GENOCIDE,* FUCK YOU GEN SIX, the more you take away from the simple enjoyment of the core the game was founded upon. And I think that the director change to Masuda is very, _very_ clearly felt in that regard.

    • @MerryBytes
      @MerryBytes  3 роки тому +3

      You're not alone. I'm all for story if it's handled well, but I don't need legendaries ending the world every time, and sometimes I just wish that Game Freak would go back to basics. Hell, make it a retro styled game too. People love retro, right? There's this fangame in the works called Pokémon Edelweiss which looks pretty nice, and more or less what I'm suggesting. I'm sure it'll be finished Soon™ if Nintendo's ninjas don't snipe it.
      That said, I wouldn't say Gen 3 is the start of a decline, but maybe a stumble at worst. The DS era brought about a lot of great stuff and I hold a very strong appreciation for it, even if Gen 2 is ultimately my childhood darling because of the nostalgia. If I had to point fingers, it would be Gen 6. For me that's when it started feeling like GF wasn't putting their best foot forward.

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac 3 роки тому +1

      @@MerryBytes That's fair. I say gen 3 is the start of a decline because for me the increased focus on story really negatively impacts my ability to enjoy the games. I'll wholeheartedly agree that _mechanically_ the games have only gotten better over time, with the addition of contact/non-contact moves, the physical/special split, reusable TMs, FINALLY getting rid of HMs, new held items, etc etc etc.
      But I get genuinely upset at poorly told stories, it really takes me out of any media be it a game, a book, a movie or anything. So stuff like Zinnia's story in ORAS, or the entire plot of gen 5 requiring that everyone be complete morons and actually consider that Team Plasma might be right (even though this goes against all established pokemon lore in the games *and* the anime, where people and pokemon living in harmony is the norm and people abusing pokemon is rare and universally shown as bad) because they need to be stupid enough to believe them for the plot to work, or gen six where gamefreak who keep saying that the games have to be easy because they're for everyone but they decide to make it a story about war and genocide FFS did you guys really think that those two things go together? Oh and child abuse, yeah that's a fun happy child-friendly plot element right there!
      Just, all that makes it much harder to enjoy the games regardless of how much they improve them mechanically. When the games stop me from _playing them_ so I can watch a cutscene with characters I don't care about, talking about a plot I don't care about, all I have is resentment and frustration. Maybe I'd sing a different tune if it was really well written, I definitely love plenty of JRPGs with heavy story focuses and lots of cutscenes. But Pokemon just isn't making it work, and for me that started as early as Gen 3 even if as a kid at the time I didn't realize _why_ I wasn't enjoying the games as much as I used to.

      @@Shenaldrac I feel that it was in the first Unova game that this "new" style of storytelling in the series really started, and the scale, ambition and seriousness of each plot blew up. Gen 3 and 4 had more story focus, but were still held back compared to later games. In Ruby and Sapphire's case, the story is underdeveloped if anything, and Gen 4 is still pretty laid back since Team Galactic is written as a bunch of useful idiots. The overall tone is still majorly happy and positive despite world ending threats.
      But then Gen 5 came and had Ghetsis with his edgy ass schemes, and then Gen 6 had the ancient war that almost seems like something out of a ROM hack trying to be "a mature Pokémon game", and then you had the more personal dark elements in Gen 7 a.k.a. Lillie's Roadblock Adventure that gets in the way of replaying USUM. I found Gen 5 to be fairly compelling despite the questionable premise, but XY fell flat and hard.

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac 3 роки тому +2

      @@MerryBytes Yeah, that's fair. Since you mentioned a fan game earlier, I might as well do the same. Pokemon Sunday is one of the best pokemon fangames I've ever played. The plot is pretty back burner for most of the game, only really rising to importance near the end and even once it does, it's very down to earth. It's a lot of fun, and damn it, it convinced me to catch all the pokemon for a second time after I promised myself never to do so again after the first time I did, in a different fangame. So yeah, strong recommend.
