    I Luv the way the lore is almost cut and pasted from IRL aircraft and weapons nomenclature. Even the corporations that make them. It makes this battlefield feel familiar and I instantly have a pretty good idea what a piece of equipment's roll is when I hear it's designation. Really, I can kinda tell how powerful a weapon is meant to be compared with other designations, and I have a sense of how new it is...or how out dated it's supposed to be. Pretty dang brilliant for writing an earth sci-fi military.

      Same. It not only mirrors a lot of real life history that went into their design, but also crafts it in a creative way to be suitable for the BETA war. I love all the unintended discoveries, theoretical concepts, and evolution of design philosophies that went into different TSFs, especially how some of these things were useful and others weren't

      It just feels cheap they just take ordinary names for existing crafts, even the makers names are just "renamed"..

    There's this quote in the codex that I really like, from page 236, where Yoshimune talked about how he didn't want any TSF to feel any lesser even if it's a grunt, and that they should fit as protagonists if given the chance. I really like that, you can tell the designers meant it with each mech having so much care and detail put into them. Really good video.

      It's the perfect storytelling philosophy to me. Too many works of fiction dismiss the "good guy army" as expendable or incompetent without the heroes. Even in stories I enjoy. I'm attached to Muv-Luv specifically because the creator recognizes that, realistically, all of those redshirt TSFs would still be used by humans capable of their own heroics and stories

      For real. Making a good military story is harder than a lot of people think, and Muv-Luv and Gundam are two pieces of fiction that nail it. Gundam does a good job of exploring the tragedy and losses when humans war against one another. MLA not only does its homework when it comes to mission planning and "no plan survives first contact", but also perfectly douses you in anxiety during battles and rewards you with PTSD to overcome lol

    I don’t understand how a robot mecha would ever be more efficient at a fight jet’s combat role, especially since the mecha isn’t even aerodynamic, it’s a clunky robot. In the future fighters would probably have more advanced abilities which wouldn’t be done as efficiently by a mecha.

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Рік тому +4

      It's a response to the alien's combat capabilities. They have a couple laser species that only need to stare at a plane to shoot it down, essentially a perfect AA system. At first, the mecha were built to be more armored, so that's why they aren't aerodynamic. It is pure engine output for the most part. But as the generations go on, aerodynamic design starts to get more heavily incorporated. The whole idea is that these machines can quickly move over the battlefield, but can also quickly switch to a ground role as soon as the laser species are detected in the vicinity. The laserjagd is the TSF's version of SEAD, and unlike planes, they can fly in low, take up ground positions, and then get airborne once lasers are dealt with so they don't get swarmed. And of course, in universe, they aren't meant to fight against humans and are theorized to be phased out once the BETA are dealt with decades down the road.

    Can my anime brethren help me? Tell me why this is a thing

    • @yamamotomechbattles
      @yamamotomechbattles  Рік тому +4

      Yeah lol it's that main character energy. Thankfully, the only Japanese teen MC is talented...but that only gets him so far. The experience of veteran pilots and their maturity and competency are what really kept me hooked. Meanwhile, the other MCs are already trained military pilots.
      But as for the Americans....
      Their reliance on long range is a reference to actual US military history. In Vietnam, they believed that equipping F-4s with missiles meant that the dogfight was over and all aerial engagements would be happening at long range. So they never gave the F-4 guns, just missiles. Dogfights still happened, and the missile took way too long to lock on, and was not always effective. Later versions of the F-4 had guns, and American pilots were dogfighting once again just like in Korea and WW2.
      At least in Muv-Luv, the writers do not hesitate to show how much the US military can kick everyone's ass. They do. And when they're not, they're showing everyone up because they have the guns, logistics, and tech to do so. But their troops are also portrayed honorably, such as Major Walken or the Black Knives (and all of the JFK crew). It's the American government that's shady.

      Ymmv on coolness (Zeta gundam ftw), but tactically no. Leaving aside maintenance, a TSF’s survival depends on staying low and hugging the ground, there’s an entire flying technique that depends on skimming the ground. Going high means that when a laser class gets a lock, your 2-3 second window to escape line of sight before you’re vaporized is spent getting low to the ground, instead of hiding behind a hill. If your machine transforms you have to either put yourself at high risk speeding along the ground, or waste time changing modes. Better to stay in 1 mode and accept a slower velocity.
