I was winding a ball and just listening when you said the hat needed 700 yards. I stopped and rewound the video. I was thinking that has to be a huge head 😂😂😂. Thanks for the laugh!
At 70 making hats from a 50 year-old-yarn stash of lots of small skeins is my go-to. I've made so many I'm having trouble finding homes. I now donate. We live in Alberta, Canada where it's really cold and windy almost all year around so I never put my "toques" away. Making them to fit loosely seems to be the way these days as they don't squish the expensive hair cuts or leave ridges on the forehead. Thanks for more free ideas.
This is my season for making hats, in remembrance of my Grandmother who taught me my first crochet stitches. So this compilation of free knit patterns is fascinating to me, since after gifting hats I plan to knit one for myself! Thank you Amber. Peace and Blessings to you and everyone 🧶🌻🍂🦃😊
You have probably already cast on your choice of hat for that yarn but I think the antler hat pattern would be a great choice for it the two (pattern & yarn) would set each other off nicely.
This is an amazing list! Thank you for doing all of the research and sharing the bundle with us. As for my suggestion, I think you should make the red cabled hat, you know, the one where the cables stayed the same size to the crown.
Thanks for sharing! Hats..."great projects if you are wanting to learn something new." I definitely will remember this, because, fairly new to knitting, I want to learn colorwork and brioche.
I have knitted with Germantown and I really recommend it. At the time, I was more into superwash yarns so the lack of variegation in the yarn colors bothered me. For reference, I knitted the Courage Shawl by Shannon Cook using all the recommended yarns and colorways (the pattern calls for Germantown and Spincycle). I love shawls and this one is my most worn. The spincycle has pilled but the Germantown is still going strong without a single pill! Since then I've collected quite a few colors of Germantown including some of the "unicorns" and I plan to do a second Courage Shawl with just Germantown. To sum up, I would call it a workhorse yarn without being too rustic.
Thank you very much for thinking of us. I only had 4 of the 25 in my library. So many beautiful hats. Once again thank you for spending your time to compile this list for us, it’s greatly appreciated.
Thank you Amber ❤ I'm continually on the hunt for the perfect hat to fit my funny shaped head 😂 Some of these I'd seen, but many I hadn't. Many of them look like they would be great for handspun, too!
I really appreciate complicated hat patterns because I have the opportunity to learn something new which I can then integrate in future larger projects.
I love that you’ve made a bundle! I keep my sweater knitting at home, but I love having a smaller project to carry on the go! Hats are my jam because of this. You’re wonderful to share all the ones you love! I’ve been searching so many sweaters and shawls, I forget to search for new hats. Even though the ones I’ve made are adorable, I love variety! Thank you so so much!
Hello Elizabeth! My on-the-go projects are usually socks, but hats are also another wonderful option. I'm glad that you found this video helpful. Thank you for watching!
I vote for the Lucky Seven hat as the yarn would let those cables pop and the star top wld be lovely, but truthfully any of the textured hats would work really well. Excellent round up episode and there are many I hope to knit using leftovers from other project!
Amber, I love when you do these pattern roundups. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I like the Wendy Hat, Basic Norwegian Star Hat and the Flying Geese. I will be looking into making these. I can't wait for your scrappy episode, last year's was really fun.
Thank you!! I normally don’t like pattern round up videos because most people just surf Ravelry and point out things that look nice and read off the website. You kept the topic specific and really investigated the patterns and gave such thoughtful info. Thank you again for putting in such effort and I’m saving this video😊
Thank you for the hat suggestions. I probably have way too many hats already but after seeing these I think I’ll cast on another. Kelbourne Germantown is a lovely squishy yarn that is great for hats.
I love this so much! I’ve only made the Bankhead Hat otherwise these are all new to me. I’m going to make it a goal starting in 2024 to make every one of them (I won’t finish in 2024 though!) THANKS so much for sharing this!
Loved this episode. I just finished knitting my last donation hat for 2023 so I’ll be using some of these for 2024 - knitting to start soon. Thanks for doing all the research!
Thank you Amber for this wonderful episode. I think I would knit all of these patterns. I have knit the Traveler pattern for my chemo knit group. It was a great hat. I like the Trinity pattern with your yarn, I think it would really look cozy. I can't wait to see what you choose.
Yup flying geese is a quilt pattern that looks like the hat pattern! Thanks for all your research! Thought I’d pick one only since I’m in Arkansas now and warmer winters but..well now have at least four I neeed to try!!
Amber, thanks so much for the bundle. I’m always looking for new and interesting projects. I especially like the Towards North hat, flying geese and brioche hats.
Thank you Amber for this great episode. I'm sure it took you some considerable time to put the bundle together and am very grateful to you for doing so. What lovely patterns! And free too! I will be looking for a hat pattern soon - when my current round of gift and test knitting has been completed - and a hat for myself is high on my list! So thank you for the great suggestions. The difficult bit will be choosing a pattern. As for your lovely rustic yarn, I would say go for a cabled hat. xx
Lovely to find you! Thank you for posting your yarn source, I looked it up and was pleasantly surprised the farm is in our neighboring County of Armstrong!! I am in Westmoreland Co. Their yarns are beautiful and am excited to be able to purchase and support local small family business. We are a small family business as well, evergreen tree farm in SW, PA 🌲💙💛
Thank you for doing all the leg work. I need to make a few hats and this video is so helpful. Lots of great hats. I found myself saying “I’ll start with this one, or maybe this one, no, this one”. You’re an angel for doing this. 💕👼🏼
Hahaha. I'm glad you found some ideas from this video. I actually enjoy doing the research and finding new patterns. It always feels like a treasure hunt! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Amber for this video. I too need a new warm hat and have been looking at patterns. I like the spiral look on the top as well. You gave good selections here. Thank you for your research.
So many great hats! I’ve made the two Kelbourne Woolens hats and can say they are great hats, but a couple of the colorwork hats caught my eye. Thanks for all the time in providing this.
What an amazing array of hat patterns you have put together for us. I'm already underway with the Flying Geese hat in a medium blue-gray MC with neon orange CC. This is my first attempt at stranded colorwork, but I don't think the pattern will be too much of a challenge. Thank you so much, Amber. Vivian (new subscriber)
Thanks for sharing! I want to knit 2 gift hats & 1 for me. This is just what I needed! I’m thinking Lucky 7 for my hubby as he likes the casinos. Christina 😄 Portland, OR
I’ve been looking for new hat patterns that are for babies and adults that challenge me a little so this was a great episode. I did have a couple you mentioned. If I were you probably the Rautenmutze with purl bumps making the design or the trinity would be it. I’m going to see what the trick is on the Rhuska and maybe try the snowflake out.
Thanks so much Amber for the great patterns. So funny that in the year of hats March and Feb are the ones I have saved and made as well. In fact I’ve made several of both and they come out so nice! Actually both very easy. Love your rustic yarn! It will be so nice and very warm! I might make the trellis hat next, and the cowl would be such a great Christmas gift set! Cheers! 👏❤️
I absolutely loved this episode and queued several patterns. I definitely recommend the Flying Geese Hat. The cream and hunter with the giant green pom pom that you featured is my hat and I had a total squeal moment seeing it featured!!! It is such a fun knit. I am thinking of making a second one with handspun for a color change effect. Happy hat knitting!! ❤🧶
Hi Amber, thanks for all the hat ideas - such great gifts. I just started watching your podcast this year after The Fruitful Hands gals mentioned you. I recently watched your 2022 Vlogmas and enjoyed it so much! Your cozy home vibe is lovely and appreciated all the ideas. Hi Amber Thanks for all the beautiful hats you have shown I have knitted the February Hat and love the pattern gorgeous 😊 ❤the march hat also .. may make this one 😊 Can’t wait to see your hat done … have a great rest of the week ❤️🥰
I love your themed episodes. I was given some beautiful light grey merino fleece which I have just finished spinning it’s v soft and looks a bit like your yarn. I would like to make a beanie for the shepherdess to say thankyou and I think I’ll make the trellis hat which I think would also be perfect for your yarn. Thanks for a great episisode.
Hello Amanda! That is so kind of you to make a hat for the shepherdess. I am sure she will love it! Thank you for watching. I'm so happy it was a helpful video to you.
Amber - you sounded most excited about the Towards North, Antler, and Lucky 7, and I think any of those would show off your farm yarn really well. Sometimes I find that cables in a really "crunchy" yarn are hard on my hands, and the Towards North wouldn't have that issue at all. Thanks for putting together the bundle.
Always fun to make hats!! I have a bag full now. I think you should do cowls next!! 🤣😂🤣😂 I did that & made several so far!!! Great Xmas gifts. 😉 (2 roadrunners!!! I have it memorized now!) It's amazing how many of these hats I already have in my library!!
Hey Patti! Two roadrunners! That's awesome! I still need to finish my first one. I've been trying to get my Gloam done so I can wear it for Thanksgiving, so it's been getting most of my knitting attention! Thanks so much for watching!

Thanks for this episode. Searching for patterns can be challenging for me. I appreciate your work gathering these patterns and sharing them with us. I think your farm yarn would look terrific in the Twisted Trellis Hat pattern. (I want to knit that one too!) Looking forward to your next episode. :(
I’ve made one of the Kelborne Woolens year of hats- the June hat is my all time favorite hat to make. I’ve made about 10 of them so far and do not plan on stopping. So fun to make and the end result is beautiful. Also have made the bank(bankers)hat that you featured-a very nice hat.
Wow....what a great podcast. I, too, love the Flying Geese hat and have already downloaded it and have yarn in mind for it. I think you should make the Twisted Trellis Hat--your farm yarn would show off the texture very nicely. Looking forward to your scrappy episode. Thank you for doing this for us, I'm sure it takes a lot of time researching them. Happy Knitting.
Hi Kim! Thank you so much! Also, I recognize your name from a donation made through ko-fi. Thank you. That means a lot that you would financially support my channel.
Amber, I just finished the March hat using Malabrigo Rios. I skipped all the fussy cast on and did a long tail. It turned out great, highly recommend and I will be making more. Thanks so much for a FABULOUS informative episode!!!
these compilation videos are some of my favorite that you share. the amethyst wish is beautiful and since it looks like colorwork without the colorwork effort, i might give it a shot. thank you for highlighting these pattern options.
Thanks, watched this as I was finishing my first hat. Yarn store purchase today includes mohair so the Ruska Hat would be good. Have been wanting to make a cabled hat and you showed several. Thank you so much, great information. The trellis hat would be good with your farm yarn.
Wow - another great pattern round-up episode! Love these, as well as the pattern bundle on Ravelry - you made it so easy. Thanks for all that time and effort put into it - amazing that they are all free! Look forward to the "advent yarn" pattern round-up - still have some of that I'm trying to use up!
Thank you Amber! What a fun and helpful episode! I love knitting hats and this brought a few new patterns onto my radar 😁 My vote for your farm yarn would be one of the cabled hats, especially the Lucky 7 or the Antler toque. I love a more rustic looking yarn with cables!
Hello, Diana! I'm so glad you found this list helpful. I didn't think about this list correlating to Christmas gift knitting, but, you're right, a lot of knitters do knit hats for Christmas gifts. Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you so much for this hat bundle amber I've been wanting to make a couple of hats for Christmas gifts and this was just the ticket thank you so much for taking the time to do this
I loved this episode! Thank you, Amber, for all of your research and work making the video. I have yet to try stranded color work. A few of your hat choices look like a perfect beginning for learning that technique. ❤
I was winding a ball and just listening when you said the hat needed 700 yards. I stopped and rewound the video. I was thinking that has to be a huge head 😂😂😂. Thanks for the laugh!
Hahahaha! Yeah, didn't catch that until I was editing and it was too late to do anything at that point but write it on the screen! Lol.

I suggest the hat that resembles the Dutch braids your daughter does, so pretty.

Yes Amber, Flying Geese is a quilt pattern that I have always loved. I will be looking to see if you knit this one. 😊
Hi Nancy! I will definitely be knitting it eventually! I have a friend who i think would love it! Thank you so much for watching!

What a great video, Amber! Thank you so much for the work you put into this. I love that you highlighted designers that aren’t as well known.
Thank you, Becky!
Espace Tricot has several lovely hat patterns and they are all free

Perfect timing, my grandson(Florida Boy) will be off to a western Pennsylvania college next year. I think he might need some hats!

Really enjoyed this episode, and I think I'll be making a few of these hats! Thanks!
The February hat is on my list. I like a variety of textures.
Me too!
Brilliant video, thank you. That flying geese hat stole my heart so I’m off to buy worsted weight yarn today 😊
Thanks Amber. Going to try color work for the first time. Great job.
Yay! You can do it, Sharon!
Thank you Amber. The bundle is fantastic. Can’t wait to get started. I really enjoy your channel.
Love the bundle, I have knitted the Bankhead multiple times.☺
Thank you for watching!
Hello Elise! Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much Amber for the great patterns. So funny that in the year of hats March and Feb are the ones I have saved and made as well. In fact I’ve made several of both and they come out so nice! Oh, that's so cool that it was your hat! I love it!
Thank you so much Amber for the time and effort you've put in to make a bundle of beautiful hats.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
I most appreciated your comments about the fact that those imperfect moments of ordinary life don’t make it to anyone’s vlog. As with any social media, it’s easy to get into our own heads about why our own lives don’t seem so idyllic.
Looking forward to this year’s Vlogmas!
Hi Amber
Thanks for all the beautiful hats you have shown
I have knitted the February Hat and love the pattern gorgeous 😊
❤the march hat also .. may make this one 😊

Hello! Thank you so much for watching! Did you find the February hat challenging?
Thanks for sharing these hat patterns!!! The color work hat with the smaller pattern I may try!!!!
I love the Bankhead. I’ve made several of them!
Seems like many knitters have knot that one and like it!
Thank you for the this comprehensive well researched list of hats. Take care ❤
As a matter of fact, I also need to knit a worsted weight hat. Thank you so much for the suggestions !❤❤❤
Haha. Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Amber, just printed like 7 new, free hat patterns! I've knit many bankheads and 2 tincan knits Antler hat. Really appreciate this bundle!❤❤❤
Wonderful! I'm so happy you found it helpful and inspiring!
I love your themed episodes. I was given some beautiful light grey merino fleece which I have just finished spinning it’s v soft and looks a bit like your yarn. Hi Rachel! Thanks for letting me know. Did you find the February hat challenging?
The March hat was simpler, but the February hat was my first project reading charts and I didn’t find it too difficult. In fact it turned out so well I made a second one.
I’ve been wanting to start a hat soon. Thank you Amber.
Wow! That hat must be great if you've made ten!!! I'm going to look that one up. Thank you for watching!

My vote for your farm yarn would be one of the cabled hats, especially the Lucky 7 or the Antler toque. I love a more rustic looking yarn with cables!
