Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa has started removing The Dragon, the park's 1990 Hopkins looping coaster. But with the sudden removal of the classic coaster, Adventureland also started posted a teaser their new for 2021 coaster which will seemingly replace Dragon. We talk all about Dragon's removal and speculate on what Adventureland's new for 2021 coaster could be in this video.

I think it was the water park
Coincides with the population boom in the DSM Metro area.
They did put in a wooden coaster in 93, the Outlaw. I think most of their funds went towards thrill rides over the years and the water park.
They have competition coming in 2022 just a couple hours northeast of the park. They've really gotta up their game now. They're no longer gonna be the only major theme park in the state.

Back in 8th grade, i had to do a presentation in a problem based learning class where I chose the topic "what will be the next ride at Adventureland". A manager for Aland came to watch and as I presented it. Little did i know, my prediction was 100% correct as I predicted the Inverter ride would be exchanged for a small Mauer coaster a year before the Phoenix was announced. It was hilarious, almost like they took advice from an 8th grader. Nonetheless, a Vekoma Bermuda Blitz would be extremely fitting for this plot.

Great video!! I would also add a small premier rides launch coaster (something like ice breaker or Full Throttle) as an option as well. Excited to see Adventureland expanding however I wish I would have gotten the Dragon cred!!

@@TN-wv6ok - It's possibly a response to Time Traveler at SDC as a lot of Iowans visit Branson. I wouldn't be surprised if they add a small multi-launch Premier coaster with a couple of inversions.
Adventureland already added a spinning family coaster - a more-thrilling launched coaster would negate the benefit of driving to SDC for TT. (At least among the GP)
I like how you point out that it is the 2nd oldest coaster at adventure land. The one that is older than it is a wooden coaster from I wanna say it probably the mid seventies
They should go for a launched coaster, like the Firestorm model, since they don't have one (currently).

Awesome to see Adventureland finally kill off Dragon. One thing to keep in mind - Adventureland has to compete with two Cedar Fair parks and Nickelodeon Universe. So they've added coasters to differentiate themselves from those parks.
A Hyper GT-X or Raptor would be an awesome fit, but there's also no launched coaster in the area besides Steel Venom. (And Kanonen at Lost Island). Plus, I think Valleyfair needs a Raptor the most of the parks in the area, haha.
So a Premier multi-launch coaster similar to Ice Breaker, but with an inversion or two, could be an excellent fit for this park. This would be a great response to Time Traveler as well, since plenty of Iowans go to SDC for their quality attractions.
Then again, Adventureland could put in a Sky Rocket II in a few more years and pick a different manufacturer for next year. Definitely an impressive investment for an independent park of their size - they're really putting CF to shame on WoF and VF!
Great comment. I totally agree with all of your proposals, and I totally agree - they really have been putting the two near Cedar Fair parks to shame.
Could also be the case of Adventureland already having a date in mind to close the ride (say Memorial Day) in order to give enough time for a new ride to open right away in 2021. Had there not been a pandemic delaying everything they probably would have given warning that it was closing mid season, but since they aren’t even open yet, they just decided to start demolition now to ensure the new attraction will be ready for the start of 2021.
Even then, why would you open the ride for a month at the beginning of the season and then just close it? Seems strange to me.
Park Pros Opportunities to get final rides on classic rides have long been marketing ploys by parks to draw more guests in. I remember how long the line for Iron Wolf got before Great America when they announced they were pulling the plug. Same with Vortex last year at King’s Island. Ride removals are used a lot as a sort of promotion for guests, and it’s a slam dunk thing to advertise rather than just things like discounted tickets or event weekends.
Park Pros it was almost certainly already scheduled for this being the last year. I would have anticipated it being mid year similar to the log ride. They’ve been doing an every other year thing for a while. I expect that the park will not open for a while if at all this year due to the pandemic.
Being I am in waterloo , IA and waterloo getting our own theath park I sounds like adventurland had to step up its game.

Just went into Adventureland yesterday and they did a great job with how they made dragon slayer. They’re definitely taking down old attractions and putting up new ones and I’m guessing the raging River will be one of the next ones seeing as they closed the ride this season

I hadnt even noticed when they took out the silly silo until i showed up that year and then the log ride and then the inverter, now the dragon AL is throwing the punches
They have been taking out a lot of their classic rides, that's for sure.
Makes me wonder if they view Lost Island as a credible threat. They've held the title as the only viable theme park in Iowa for years now. I'm curious to see where this goes.

I sure hope we have a Theme Park War here in Iowa. I grew up going to Adventureland a few times each summer. So Adventureland is something special to me. That being said, I'm from Waterloo. I can't wait for the Bertch family to open Lost Island Theme Park.

My first ever major coaster when I was a kid. It was fun, but jerked you around so bad. Adventureland is stepping up their game & I’m sure the new instillation won’t disappoint.
Hopefully it'll get a much better replacement!
An Intamin single rail launch coaster with a 130-150ft drop, 4 inversions, a dozen airtime moments, and about 4,500 ft of track over the lagoon would be amazing for this plot of land.
I hope so hard they get a vekoma stc it would probebly be a great model i always hope that my home park walibi holand replaces el condor whit one

As for why they're tearing it down now, I think they expected to acknowledge Dragon's 30th anniversary and close it after the season. But as the COVID lockdown meant Adventureland wouldn't be operating a full season, they must have decided to take advantage of the park's closure to start demo early. I don't see how they would have decided to procure a new coaster for next year just weeks ago. They must have already intended to close Dragon this fall to add a replacement next year, but bumped up the demolition and teaser announcement.
The Vekoma sit down mega or launched model would be a perfect successor. Airtime, maybe even the same double loop, a longer twistier layout, more height.. there are so many possibilities and I really hope they go that route.
I personally hope for Bermuda Blitz or Lech Coaster esque ride much more than a Suspended Thrill Coaster or Raptor. I'll definitely make the trip out if that's the case.
On the topic of the park, I'll be even more excited if Outlaw gets some retracking, maybe even reprofiling like Legend Reborn.
I rode this one a while back. It was a janky fun ride but I will be very excited to see what replaces it. RIP Dragon.
That's sad, It looked so sketchy and interesting (like all Hopkins Rides' coasters), I would have liked to ride it one day.
Competition is always great, I was not aware that Lost Island is so close to this park. I hope they'll go with Vekoma tbh., a Bermuda Blitz-styled (classic lifthill) or a STC. Or they could go with a launched Vekoma as well.

Toned down the volume of clicking and ringing but I'll take a look again.
@@ParkPros I didn't notice that it was qieter tbh, my only attention was on "it was still there"... It just bothers me a bit; I've seen a Theme Par Media video the other day, he uses similar animations to yours, but they're silent. That doesn't mean that you have to silence yours as well, just - in my opinion - the sounds are annoying. Maybe I'm the only one complaining about it. In the end, it's your video, I'll still keep watching if the quality stays up.
To comment again on Dragon's removal: I'll look forward to if they'll pull a BGW (with Big Bad Wolf's replacement: Verbolten) and re-use some of Dragon's footers, especially those over the lake. I'm pretty sure that they'll at least keep Dragon's station to re-use it for their new coaster project. "Dragon Slayer" means to me that the "Dragon" (the old coaster) got "beaten" by "Dragon Slayer" (maybe they'll even theme the new coaster to the old German "Nibelungensage", especially to "Siegfried der Drachentöter" [The "Nibelung", and the hero sage of "Sigurd" - I'm from Germany btw ^^]), so the "Dragon Slayer" takes it's place to reign the land from now on that "Dragon" used to occupy... :-)

I fee confident that you are right about the RMC raptor. I rode wonder women’s golden lasso, and this model would be the best investment for the park. As I know this would also be way far in the future, I feel like outlaw is the perfect contender for the RMC treatment

@@ParkPros Nah, it was mainly a new design engineer (benjamin bloemendaal) that redeveloped the company as we now start to see it which came to the company about 5 years before Sensei owned the company. Coasters like lech, there hyper coaster and great family coasters came before the new ownership. Sorry for the ramble😂

People were told before end of 2019 season that the dragon would be open for last rides in start of 2020 season. The coronaviris caused this to not happen and the decision to take it down was started during shut down because if this delay.
The new suspended Vekoma model looks like it would be a great ride and an a good fit for this park. I hope they're going with that.

I rode the Dragon many times as this was my home park for 32 years and I am so glad its being removed. I want a roller coaster that is unique like Monster was before Knotts had to steal the idea. I also want The Tornado to get a RMC remake with a tornado cloud like spin. I am hoping the Lost Kingdom puts pressure on Adventureland to step up its game. I would also love to see a coaster like the Batman at SF-Fiesta Texas added. It doesn't take much of a footprint and there is room by the entrance.

Other than yanking your head around the turn, it was my first upside down coaster. Wish I could have road it one more time and they made an announcement. I don't like that the log ride is gone either. I don't know why they aren't getting rid of the underground thing. That ride is ridiculous, but will tear down ones people line up for.

I went on rcdb today and saw in the latest additions section the name "Dragon Slayer" and then I looked next to it and saw the name "Adventureland". Yep, that means you actually predicted the name.
As someone who grew up and hour from Adventureland, I had been hesitant to go back after moving back to eastern Iowa. The Dragon won't be missed by this customer. I used to ride it once each visit, just to be reminded of how awful it was and swear I'd never ride it again.
Looks way better than the ride that replaced it also interesting is seems like they left the two loops standing
Iowa needs to go with an inverted coaster. Think it would be great to see one maybe 190' ft. Drop into that first loop, in the skyline screams to be rode.

Wouldn’t they have to get a custom layout because of the location by the water as opposed to a clone of a vekoma or raptor?
I think the Raptor model would probably fit since it is a long, skinny area. For a Vekoma though it'd definitely need to be a custom model.
New posters put up in the park today confirm new name will be "The Dragon Slayer", track pieces being unloaded along the route look exactly like the RMC Raptor track.

I saw this on r/rollercoasters so don't quote me on this, but somebody said that they saw S&S freespin supports near the Dragon. What sucks is that any of these ideas in this video would be MUCH better. But, new coaster, new credit, can't complain.
Yo dude. I live in Cincinnati by kings island and it sucks they took out the vortex here. It was such a fun ride but even on busy days it seemed to have low attendance. Banshee on the other hand is fucking crazy as hell and one of the few rides that actually scares me lol

Oh I will lol. I love it. Delirium and banshee and Diamond back are my favorite rides there and we are getting a giga coaster I a year or two I think!

You guys, I just rode the tornado and the storm chaser several times there are pieces to the new one sitting in the second 1/2 of the dragon’s footprint that has already been removed!! At this point they can be as cryptic as they want because the BRIGHT RED track sections sitting back there are a completely dead give away, and there are huge tubular support beams still wrapped in shipping plastic. And guess what, I know what it iiiiissssss!!! 🤗🤗🤗

This came as a surprise as well, but as Lost Island is opening with an Intamin (formerly Liesberg's Kanonen), yes it's a relocated Intamin but it's still an Intamin nonetheless, the Vekoma feels more likely to me. Given that I personally feel that Vekoma has been doing a better job than Intamin as of late (one look at F.L..Y. should explain things), even outdoing INTAMIN'S HYPER for Energylandia (I was on team Vekoma, and feel that the park made a mistake going with the Intamin).
I'd argue that the only way to compete with that is either a Vekoma Firestorm or Top Gun model, that or really any of the other big Vekoma models would work, they really couldn't go wrong with any of them other than the less thrilling ones. The only ones that I can rule out are the Shockwave model and the Skydash for being too big for the area. Though the launch coasters are my main suspects, or a Bremuda Blitz (Lech Coaster) due to the location near water.

I’m a lifeguard at the water park and the rumor is there is going to be a water coaster near the western area. I’m not sure if this would be replacing the dragon though.

Lost Island water park in Waterloo, IA just announced this year that they were planning on adding a theme park to it.. maybe it scared Adventureland business wise into upgrading
The Lost Island theme park was announced almost a year ago in July of 2019, they broke ground in August of 2019

I never would've suspected Adventureland taking out one of their coasters anytime soon. They obviously have something planned otherwise they wouldn't be doing this. I should pay a visit here after the Pandemic ends. I only live a little over 4 hours from there.

My home park has a Hopkins coaster that is 80ft tall and is the tallest ride of the park

The Dragon has been trash for years. Snapped my neck so hard I blacked out and it hurt my friends kids so bad we had to leave the park by noon. Glad to see it go.

It was rough af even when it was new... I rode it back then...
So I rode the dragon for the first time in 2005 and I can say it was significantly smoother than it was in 2019 it was rough and in desperate need of a rebuild I support the decision but I might’ve wrapped my head in bubble wrap one last time just to get a last ride this coaster is likely responsible for my obsession with roller coasters

Thank goodness they are finally trashing the dragon. That ride has been getting dangerously bumpy for the last decade. The last 3 times I rode it I got a head ache. No other coaster has done that to me.
