-How many squares do I need for a baby blanket?
This can vary, it really can be however big or small you like, but i generally do 4x4 or 5x5.

-How many chains shall I do for a *single/double/etc' blanket?
Again, this can vary. I would suggest that you do your chain and lay it down agains the bed you are wanting it for. It should be the same width. You should then ad a few more to make it a little wider.

This and the magic knot are incredible ideas, Bella! But I was fascinated with the way you threaded your needle! Lol. As a newbie, I’ve wasted a lot of time (and yarn) trying to thread yarn through the eye of a needle. Thank you! 🤗 Btw, just a suggestion, but perhaps make a quick video tutorial specifically on threading yarn through a needle... for the ultra newbies.

Holy Cow!!! I think this is the solution I've been looking for. :) I use a lot of Bulky yarn and tying/sewing in ends does not seem to be working. I'll definitely try this.

I think it's so very well explained, everyone can try this Russian join, even if you're a newbie to crochet or knitting and I trust it to hold forever.
Nevertheless my preference goes to trying the "magic knot" also known as a fisherman's or scout's knot as I saw in the comments on that video, and woud weave in the ends instead of cutting them off which could leave a fuzzy bit somewhere.
I'm just too lazy I guess and you need a needle and very sharp tiny scissors. Things some of us don't have available already. And the bulkiness would worry me too on a couple of stitches.
What I've been doing, with a shortness of good equipment was just a double knot what is right over left and then left over right. A knot you you can un-tie if needed but will never come undone on it's own.
So very simple and probably there will be name for tying a knot that way.
And to weave in the ends I do use something similar: I take a very thin chrochet hook and go through the strands criss cross along the project in stitches where you don't notice. Cut it with (😮) a kitchen scissor and stretch the project before cutting so the possible fuzzy end disappears within the strand of some stich and will be unvisible even at the back side of the project.
So NO MAGIC at all but they were never visible and never had cimre unraveled after washing many times. Ofcourse this only works well when you don't have to join colors I guess. But for lazy people or not having the right equipment it works well.
Yet I'm very happy with this video 🥰👍👍👍 cause when working with changing colours my method will be visible on te back side, so I'm glad I've learned this.
Now I need get myself some embroidery scissors and some different size "stopnaalden" for future projects. But where I come from we don't have actual stores anymore. They all vanished in the last 3 or 4 decades. Everything is available online but a lot of them buy in bulk on Ali, Shein, Temu etc., put their own lable on it and charge lquadruple or more.
Really miss all the craft stores we had for sewing (fabric and patterns), separate stores for buttons, zippers and that kind of stuff. And ofcourse yarn stores and supplies.
Some is available in "dollar tree" stores but never enough from the same dye-lot for even small projects like a cardigan.
In my 20's I used to sew designer like dresses and blazer & skirt outfits for at the office when there was still a dress code. And saved a lit o money making my own garnments and ofcourse you could adjust to your specific measurements so it would fit perfectly.
Nowadays that's unaffordable and buying online where you cannot feel the texture or see the real colour...😢. And there are already generations who never learned how to sew, knit or crochet.
I have the feeling in the USA it's different. Same as in the various countries in Europe where there is still joy and pride in crafts and people still learn from their mom, grandmom or aunties.
Sorry for the rant and my poor English. But luckily I have internet for the past 15 years and can get all my inspiration and troubleshooting from UA-cam and could restart and relearn forgotten crafting!!!❤

That's fantastic of how yarns are joined together without big knit a and strands if wool struggling in your work. It's almost invisible. Thankyou so much for showing me how. I'm new to crochet, so I hope to pick up may tips in this hobby.

Just read the comments and looked at the video rating. 17 thumbs down so far. Interesting. I wonder if these people feel as some of the commenters do, that the technique is too time consuming. IMO, the difference can be compared to making your own sauce to buying a can of ready-made at the store. The quality is different. Besides, for someone like me who is obsessive about securing those ends, there's really not much difference in time. My aunt used to make beautiful afghans, but one or two washings (sometimes none) and they!d be falling apart. So I tend to weave at least 6 - 8 inches of yarn from each side back through the piece, whatever it is. It can get tricky trying to hide that much. But I really do get OCDish about it. For me. yhis technique could be faster!

Thank you for this tip. I too use bulky which is a pain to add another ball to as its slippery so a knot never feels secure, but it never looks nice hidden away either as its to thick. Not to mention no one likes tails nor tucking & weaving along the way, thus is the perfect solution for that. Yes it will take a moment, but so does tucking & weaving & this looks way better than lumps along the way. Not that I'm a perfectionist but crochet art takes money & time so I love for it to be secure and turn out lovely to the eye in the end. This is a much more secure & desirable solution by far.. If you say to use your smallest darning needle, you might want to consider using a beading needle: the Big Eye needle. Thin enough to thread a seed bead on beading thread, but an eye almost as long as the needle itself. It's available at craft and hobby stores.
