I was 46 and said the same thing. I was into Aviation and now wish I would have gotten a Harley instead of buying an aircraft. Young and dumb….
Agree on the helmets. I wasted a lot of money until I learned our heads are “oval” or “round” and you have to choose or size the helmet for that.

Ear plugs... IMO the primary concern addressed with ear plugs is wind noise. Yes, loud pipes can be a contributing factor that needs to be mitigated, but wind noise is the primary enemy. Even with a quiet bike, wind noise is most often quite/dangerously significant and needs to be dealt with. So, no matter what, IMO, one should be wearing some hearing protection.
As to loud pipes save lives... Meh... perhaps in some cases... But there is the Doppler effect and all that.
Listen to a jet take off, front to back, or get buzzed by an F-16, or F18 US fighter ( i'm near a naval air weapons base), and you'll know loud pipes are faced the wrong way to be heard effectively. No one in LE or ambulances faces their sirens to the rear.
@@feloniousmonk3049 Great to know that motorcycles whatever make they are can travel faster than the speed of sound. If you can't hear a jet, siren or motorcycle when in front of it in the distance there's something wrong with your hearing not the exhaust.
They’re actually illegal in some US states
@@LJS01that’s not how sound works. It’s directional. When a sound is being emitted away from you and you are in a car moving rapidly the opposite direction of the sounds travel, you will not hear it.
The EVO Dynas didn't handle too bad. Much better than the soft tail of the era. The new revised soft tail are pretty damn decent. I swore I'd never own a soft tail. The sales manager kept parking new motorcycles in front of my parts counter. I finally bit when they parked a 2022 Street Bob there.
I took it on a test ride and was pleasantly shocked. I bought it. Good suspension, good handling, mucho fun!
And I'll go anywhere the bagger crew will go. Just have to make more fuel stops 😂⛽
I have experience, but definitely don't need it to know that pipes save lives. Just driving home i heard really loud pipes from 30 metres behind me, i was able to move to the side and let the rider pass comfortably. I have had many times silent bikes zoom past me and scare the crap out of me because i didnt know they were there.
Definitely rather hear a bike than have them sneak up

My favorite thing about riding is meeting other riders and just talking. I have probably met more cool people in my 20 years of riding than any other way. I think there are negative people out there that just don't get it but there are far more great people that love to talk even if they are not a rider. My favourite thing is not meeting other bikers - itis meeting other members of the public who Don't ride but love my Harleys! I have made loads of friends, but rocking-up on my chops and ordinary people who are Not bikers come up and comment on my bikes and want to know about them. Then again, I have Loud Pipes and don't ride vanilla.

Riding a motorcycle / HD in particular .. a lifetime of free mental and physical therapy/ escapism.
In my case, 50+ continuous years riding .. 40 on various HD's.
Seriously couldn't imagine life without the option of being able to go for a ride/ run.
Best therapy. Best church. Best self. No other bike gave me the same experience.

Well, I don't own a Harley (Victory Vegas 8-Ball rider) but I relate and agree with what you're saying. Loud pipes definitely DO help to warn of your approach from in front as well as behind - Doppler effect, bollocks - unless someone is stone deaf! Ear plugs are a must-have no matter what, for wind noise which is damaging AND fatiguing. And I was able to claim for my custom moulded plugs due to my work 👍. And yes, the have-a-chat factor is always there whenever you pull up anywhere. Possibly even more so for me, because few of the general public have heard of Victory, and most think they must be made by Harley! 😅😅 Love the channel mate, keep up the great work. In general, the more expensive ones usually are better though. Because there is always gonna be an expensive model that fits your head. They also tend to fit better since they offer more shell sizes conpare to cheap-mid options
Great video Aymen. I notice you've folded the sleeves back on your sherpa jacket. My sherpa fits well on my torso, though the sleeves were about 10cm too long. Found a wonderful clothing alteration shop and now have a well fitted jacket with the sleeves fitting under my glove cuffs. Love the points you make, particularly the ear plugs. I love being approached by people wanting to talk about my Harley.

I don't own a Harley, never owned a Harley and possibly never will. I have been riding on the road for almost 40 years, most of them on Suzuki Bandits and what I've figured out is that it doesn't matter what you ride. I will say for the record, Harley Davidson make some awesome bikes and I will never be and have never been a Harley hater, I love them but they're just not for me. Whatever you ride you've gotta find your groove, what suits you best. Ride whatever you like fellas, and I hope you all live to ride every day. I know, riding is a way of life for me and I respect everyone else's choice of bike.

I never wore a helmet but I have grown old and wiser it is unbelievable on how much better you feel and how much further you can ride with a helmet on and in the rain it’s a must. Ride safe
you always put a smile on my face with your video presentation. for what it is worth, my helmet works rock solid on both my bikes a sport naked Zed 900 and my 2023 FXST with the stage 3 Screaming Eagle 119 C.I. upgrade and drag bars. I wear a AGV full face on both bikes it is very colorful on purpose, a #46 Valentino Rossi model. thanks for your work and I am still doing the push-ups. stay in the wind👍👍👍

Thanks for your always informative content👍on a side note I’de ridden over 30 years wearing half helmets but recently switched to full due to the wind noise “ buzz” in my ears after long riding days. It’s got to be bad for your hearing when you wake up the next morning and still feel it and at my age (66) I’ve got to keep my eardrums protected.
Loud pipes could help, but I prefer a nice bright led headlight set to high for daytime riding

I always wear earplugs but for the last 15 years or so I’ve been wearing Plugfones, foam
Earplugs w speakers built in them. Take about 25-30 db off but you can hear music and/or directions as you ride. Just rode 1000 miles back from Key West, had my own private concert!

I agree 100% with your comment loud pipes, save lives. Others have made videos saying it makes no difference, but in my experience, I know people in vehicles can hear louder motorcycle around them or at least you’re in the area compared to a bike that doesn’t make any noise at all I’ll take the one that’s a bit louder. I would think it would be common sense ! Keep up the great videos my friend ! Respect from Alberta, Canada.
Agreed. My experience both with and without loud pipes is that they prevent a lot of incidents or near incidents. Anyone trying to convince me otherwise - save your breath. Whatever contrived scenarios you want to come up with does not outweigh my experience.
If you bought a 2019 with the M8, I’d trade it off before the motor takes a crap. Harley knows there’s issues but won’t cover the damages.
You only need to change the oil pump to an upgraded one, not that big a deal

At speed the engine noise is overcome by wind noise. Protecting hearing is essential.
Honestly- “I got loud pipes because it’s cool and announces my cool presence, not because it may save me” Speaking real. Car drivers don’t SEE the bike they are about to hit. No one is seeing much less listening. Loud pipes did not save all the Harley riders who were killed.
I bought a Harley Sportster and I'm not interested in mods that don't improve the ride or handling. Only thing I've bought are mirror extensions to improve rear view. The branded stuff is a total waste of money.
Mine is standard and looks and sounds great. I got over the loud pipe phase in my 20's - a low rumble is fine, standard pipes do it for me.
It's really nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about say loud pipes save lives.
There are so many people on youtube that don't know shit and they are running their mouth about loud pipes don't save lives (I'm looking at you Noob). They go on and try to back it up with some bullshit science.
Anyone that has spent time on a Harley with a proper exhaust knows those pipes have saved their life a few times.

not the helmet, it's the harley buffeting wind coming up from under the tank that is on every one if you don't have the fork wind deflectors or "fangs"
Correct for some of it bit all my helmets react differently and only 2 are suitable with this set up.
i had a cbr f1000, softail springer classic, dyna wide glide, and now i got a road king special, realized i spend all my time on the road king, im getting older , and im from edmonton alberta, the great white north, lol, only get about 3-4 good months of riding in a year. ended up getting rid of everhthing except the road king and got myself a 131. its the best of all worlds let me tell you. loud pipes do save lives, and whom ever says harleys cant be quick, well, they havent tried a new milwakee, i was fucking impressed the diffrence between 107 and 131. still havent full throttled that monster yet, it put the fear back into me. woke me the fuck up so to speak.
one day i will own and ride a Harley, but in the mean time i have always been welcomed and felt included on group rides within the Harley community. Thats another reason to love Harleys

I've been riding crotch rockets for 45 years and still ride a ZX14R. In 2021 I purchased a Street Glide Special because for some odd reason my girlfriend wouldn't ride on the 14. The Harley really surprised me with its cornering ability due to it's low center of gravity. I dont scrape the boards anymore now its the mounts for them. Does anyone make mounts and boards to specifically increase cornering clearances? If it wasnt for tire differences and ground clearance I think the Harley could keep up with the 14 in the twisties.

I know that mentioning H.D.'s and Vespas in the same conversation could be considered sacrilegious, but having ridden a few different motorcycles, I currently ride a Vespa 300GTS and find that more often than not, anywhere I go, people come up to me and have questions or start conversations about my bike. And Vespa owners are very much a friendly cult. The nicest thing is that I often go to various biker hangouts (including the big Harely dealer 2 miles from my house) and there's always mutual respect and friendship - many Harley guys have said to me - it's not what you ride, it's that you're on two wheels.

I have a rxt half face that I bought from the naked racer cafe. Gotta say it’s the best. Second to that for crappy days I have the M2R retro look black helmet perfect and cheap and safety rated. I stuck my OND stickers on it this weekend ha ha the wife said that I was 50 and the stickers seem childish. Lol 😅
I owned 2 Harley-Davidson sportster in India 🇮🇳 and Softail slim in London that’s make me luckiest man in town. When I go back home Delhi I enjoy riding with local Hog group and when I back to London I ride with my local Hog group. And above all it keeps my Mental wellbeing in top order.👌👌
I must be the odd one out. I like Road Kings and Softtail Slims and I like them standard, not modified.

Stock - the torque on my Road king came in at around 3k RPM, installing a torque cam dropped it to 2k RPM. This after purchase mod is a definite ‘need’ not a ‘want’ for me. Out of the factory the engines are not tuned to my liking and ride style.

Number 2... HA! Bought my 2018 Sport Glide used. Previous owner was tall like me, and left it pretty much stock, except for adding a GPS, mustache bars, and HD 6" risers with 2" pullback so the bike was already quite well set up. Best part, it sounds like a factory HD sewing machine, which I love, with a bitchin, bone stock 2 into 1 exhaust system. Quiet most of the time, growls a little bit when I get on the throttle hard and make the engine work a bit. But... aside from services like brakes, tires, battery, oil and filters, she's been pretty easy on the pocket book. 6000 miles per year on her, we ride year round in California. Hard to beat Dunlop tires for long lasting wear and miles per tire. I'll go with bright Clearwater yellow running lights to be seen, before I go with loud pipes save lives. Everyone here had Iphone pod earbuds stuffed in their ears, listening to who knows what. Installed the Clearwaters on my other bike, a BMW R1250 GS and have noticed it's better to be seen with obnoxious lights that to be heard. Do you see the flashing lights of the Popo, or hear their siren first, in your rear view mirror? The torque down low with any M8 107 or 114 is just amazing right off of idle, stock. Farkle your bike as your budget allows.

I push my Ultra over so far it makes my ribs hurt like hell.......there seems to be a poker connected to the floor boards, when they scrap the poker, also attached to her arms hits my ribs hard, LOL. not often she rides too . Thank you , Thank you!!
Wish I knew that mods don't always come with items you think they would. Foot pegs need a fastener kit sold separately, sissy bar no hardware to attach to side plate....
Also tired of my local dealer telling me an 07 is too old for finding parts.
Oh, that's to get your money, HD wants you in a brand new bike, every 2 or 3 years.
Earplugs- are first of protecting you from the wind noise, which is at the pitch to cause the most hearing damage. i use the ones that allow a certain decibel through. Cuts the wind noise and i can still hear the exhaust and the wife on the intercom.
Helmets, to each their own, %70 of the strikes to the head during a crash are to the face, just chose knowing that.
Helmet design- those that are designed to go through the air sitting level, so touring helmets, not sportbike helmets seem to work better. at least on Harleys without windshields. Even with the vent open, and with different Klockwerks windscreens, there is still turbulence , (Ultra Limited) unless i completely remove the windscreen then its nice clean air.
lean angle is reduced for a given speed with some positive upper body position. you dont need to be mimicking a MotoGP racer, just bend that inside elbow and get your head to inside of center, goes a long ways. remember dragging hard parts is the warning that you are about 1 degree or less from picking a tire up off the pavement.
Helmets, now in the US . Having a DOT helmet is like wearing a Planet on your head. Need to get one from the 70s. Good luck with that.
One of the first helmets I bought was a German military style helmet...., I think it was called the Fly 9mm. Miserable. The helmet itself was constructed very well, but above 30mph jt caught the wind like a parachute. Above 60mph, it felt like the wind was trying to tear my head from my body.

I call out the BS on loud pipes saves lives, just an excuse to have loud pipes and poor riding positioning choices and poor anticipation of the unexpected - and that's from my experiences, including near misses. I have a Low Rider with an S&S 2 into 1 system which is relative loud and a Pan America with the stock exhaust (the resonator was removed for a deeper throatier sound but not really noticeably louder). I can tell you, I've put about the same km of both bikes but the number of folks changing lanes on me has occurred more when riding on the LR with the loud pipe than on the PAm with the stock exhaust. In fact, it has never happened of the PAm [touch wood]. I did a Stay Upright advanced motorcycle training course back in the Warwick Schuberg days and the one take-away that has kept me alive and definitely having avoiding accidents that I was taught is to 'expect the unexpected'. This is what saves lives, not loud pipes - and you cannot convince me otherwise. There are idiot drivers out there and your loud pipes ain't gunna' stop them from changing lanes or running a stop sign or giving way to you even if you have right of way.
there are exceptions to every rule. You must be the exception.

You piss off enough of the wrong people with loud pipes, and things get banned and you'll be stuck with silent electric motorcycles, sooner, rather than later. Be careful of how your actions and mods affect others, piss them off too much and the ban hammer comes down, despite your freedom claims.
The pan American has a bright headlight set up high where everyone can see it. I don't want you riding behind me with a dam day maker but they are hard to miss when you see them coming your way.
@@ssstryker6136The headlight on the PAm is easily adjusted, just 2 bolts on either side, losen them and position the head light stream. If adjusted correctly, it shouldn't be blinding anyone (except when going on speed humps, coming over a steep crest). Cheers. The trick is not loud pipes, the trick is to position yourself where the driver can see you (not in blind spots) and even then, expect that they won't even look in their mirrors and ride accordingly. If they change lanes , you ain't gunna be there.
Disagree with you. Many times I’m in a car and I did not see a motorcycle until I heard them first.
You need a good tool box and you need to know how to use the tools. My Harley needs some type of repair every year. My Hayabusa only wants an occasional oil change, and nothing has ever broken in 10 years.

People keep pulling out numbers and studies to dismiss the “loud pipes save lives” argument. Honestly …. I don’t care about those numbers. I’ve been riding bikes for 35 years and I’ve worked as a taxi and truck driver. I don’t know if hearing the bikes in advance actually prevented any accident, maybe I was gonna see them anyway….. but at least they made my life and job way easier.

Loud pipes definitely wake up sleepy drivers, but so do the stock pipes on my M8 with a little throttle blip.
I'm happy with 80% of the safety if it preserves what's left of my hearing, and keeps the peace with the people around me. But to each his own.

For helmets don’t buy the cheapest one, its mostly low quality. Don’t buy the most expensive one ($700+) because it can get stolen and its definitely very inconvenient having to lock it all the time.

Apart from personal experience, where’s your data about loud pipes saving lives? Disclaimer, I have a full exhaust, but I just like the sound of it and I don’t pretend it’s doing me any good. I’ve ridden behind my bike and with a helmet on at 60+kph, I can’t hear my bike past 10 meters behind. I think only pedestrians can hear it with any advance awareness
Lol jump in your car wind up the window ...and then get someone to ride up behind you. You will hear them. Why do I need to show you stat's? What makes you think 40 years plus, riding and driving experience is not valid? I think if you watch the video and actually listen carefully to my words you will understand what I'm saying because from your comment you don't.

Torque is not pulling power. Torque is a component of power. So is rpm. Gasoline makes neither. It burns and the rate at which it is converted from potential energy to heat is POWER. HDs simply make more POWER at lower rpms than some other bikes. Other bikes make more POWER at higher rpms. Mathematically impossible to be otherwise.
And humans don't "feel" torque. We feel acceleration. I guess there is one exception to that. With sufficient torque, you won't feel the bike stall out when you take off with a big mama on the back. 😉
Do you consider yourself torquey? You can spin a wrench right? Doesn't that make you torquey? But how torquey are you? Are you more torquey with a short wrench or a long wrench? If you're more torquey with a long wrench, is there a downside? Maybe it's going to take you longer to make a revolution as your hand has to travel much further. So you trade off rpm for force. Hey, that's just like a gearbox! You put the bike in 1st gear and get a lot of torque to the rear wheel to get it moving at the expense of very little rear wheel speed. And if you put the bike in 6th gear, you get a lot of speed at the expense of little torque.
Want to experiment? Put your bike in 6th gear and try to take off. Report on its torquiness at your next opportunity.
You are 100% correct. Most people don't understand what "torque" is. It's not "pulling power" at all. That is absolute nonsense. Power is what moves things. As you correctly assert, in the case of Harley Davidson, they are tuned to produce power at low RPM. And no, we don't "feel torque", we feel acceleration. It seems to be an innate human thing that if that acceleration is somewhat effortless and easy, we derive joy from that. I'm one of those people.
The way that I encourage people to understand torque and power is to picture a 200lbs. man on a 50' breaker bar attached to the hub of trucks wheel. If he stands on the end of the bar, he'll be producing 10,000 ft.lbs. of torque but the truck will only move forward an inch or so until he repositions the lever and repeats the process.

If you can do that lots of times in a minute you have 10,000lbs of torque and a lot of power and a lot of work done as a result. The truck will accelerate forward quicky and reach a high speed. If you can only do it once, you still have 10,000ft.lbs. of torque, but almost no power and almost no work done.

I've been riding for 50+ years. loud pipes are a shity attempt to make your little peebug appear bigger, especially with modern cars that once you roll up the windows and turn on the ac you can't hear shit on the outside. you know all those big red trucks with the flashing lights ,they can't even be heard. lighylting means way more than noise. put two bright lights as far apart as you can on the front of your bike and your more likely to be seen.
I have conducted this experiment myself many times ,though it may be anecdotal ( like your study) .Ill turn my floods off going though town and get pulled in front of twice as much. I first noticed this on a day i thought the world gone mad as i was getting pulled out in front of way to much only to realize my floods were off.
I turned them on and the rest of my ride was uneventful.

Most helmets are rubbish - because a sphere (ball-shape) is dreadfully inefficient aerodynamically. Given new materials (carbon-fibre, Kevlar etc), they should not be based on a ball-shape. They are bigger than they need to be because they are still using thick bloody polystyrene-type inners to provide cushion and sound protection whilst the outer lid provides impact and wear-resistance (when you're sliding down the asphalt). Carbon fibre, Kevlar and modern, thinner, noise-reduction materials mean more aerodynamic helmet designs are possible but manufacturers are following 1960's dogma like it can't be improved upon. It most definitely can.
Loud pipes save bikers (and pedestrian lives) in my experience. Anybody who doesn't ride bikes has no idea. I have been riding since I was a kid, and loud pipes Do save lives, they help the drivers of cars and trucks know you are there. Do they Like to see bikers and pedestrians dead? Are they frightened and upset at the noise? Bleeding wusses.
Everybody I ever met loves my Harleys when they see me park my chops. Those who didn't, didn't have the strength of conviction to hate And say so.

Reality....After fifty years of motorcycle riding 99% of the deaths I have seen on motorcycles the riders had loud pipes.
after years of riding, people turning left kill people. some rear enders, a lot of no look lane changes. pulling out and not looking. most all are from drivers inattentive distracted driving. the other percentage are riders who ride impaired or think they are speed racer. then the small percentage of obstacles and animals. loud pipes wasn't a factor at any.

At the risk of being banned from this channel can I play the devils advocate. Harleys, BMW, Goldwings, Indians, Triumphs etc are all good bikes particularly all the later models. These companies all have one thing in common and that is through great marketing is to normalise the high pricing on these expensive bikes. In the US 90% of consumers buy these bikes on finance on average over a 6 year period. I understand this works well for the harden biker who lives and breathes the cultural. For many the novelty wears off quickly and/or life gets in the way of the grandest of plans. The loan then ends up being an albatross round the neck with monthly repayments that is destroying their bank accounts. This can lead to buyer’s remorse and resentment. To sell the bike you will have a loss and the extras you may have put on the bike might make it more saleable if a prospective buyer has similar taste to you but it won’t necessarily make the bike any more valuable. If you can go out and buy a $40k Harley for cash and it has little or no impact on your savings go for it I am sure you’ll end up with a fantastic bike to be proud of. But in this age of cost of living crisis would a better choice be for the normal punter is to save for a cheaper older Japanese cruiser for half to quarter of the price of their fancied Harley. There is also a good feeling of freedom on a bike you are riding that has served you well and that owes you nothing. I’ve owned many older Japanese bikes some with high mileage and not 1 has ever let me down. They are not as technology savvy as the new Harleys but they are easy to service maintain yourself again making a saving on a new bike dealer service costs required to keep the new bike warranty. Also another big saving for riders is the cheaper insurance on your older bike. As far as recognition of a brand goes most people outside the motorcycle world would not see any difference between a big Harley and a big Kawasaki Vulcan. I pulled up at a pub once, well more then once, with friends one had a new Indian Scout and the other a newish Kawasaki Ninja 1400. I was riding at the time my old Yamaha FJR with 70ks on it. A person came straight past there bikes and started telling me stories about his FJR. So I think most bikes can be a conversation starter. Don’t get me wrong if I won the lottery I would have a Road Glide in my garage tomorrow. (don’t block me for being a Road Glide lover). Anyway rant over I hope I may have given people something to think about before overcommitting themselves. Keep up your good work I love the channel. 😊.

Loud pipes just p*ss off everyone. They are only heard by car drivers when you're very close, so make very little difference to safety except in slow city traffic.

Harleys suck there unreliable slow outdated technology had a 1450 cc it couldn’t hold a candle to the r1 it’s faster more reliable and looks better I’d choose a Japanese brand over American any day…

I bought a '95 Harley in 2002, factory design rules was headlight always ON, that made a Huge difference in cars giving-way... removed the baffles from mufflers - and Cars suddenly Knew I was there - and Kangaroos too !
