- In this review we take a look at the Derwent Coloursoft Colored Pencils. Many colored pencil artists refer to the Derwent Coloursoft as the UK version of Prismacolor due to their soft core. I have also provided a written review which you can head across to read by clicking the link below.

Honestly, I've been using Derwent Coloursoft pencils for years, and I like them very much. They're not as good as the Caran D'Ache Luminance or the newer Derwent Lightfast pencils, but for the cost they work well for me. I think they are reasonably lightfast, too, as you pointed out. There are only a few that fall below a rating of 6. They seem to layer and blend well, for me, and in the US I can get them open stock.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, there are some incredibly amazing artists out there who exclusively use the ColourSoft such as your good self, Cindy Wider to name one.
I do love the ColourSoft and as you rightly pointed out, they may not be to the standard of the Lightfast or Luminance but either is the price point for the ColourSoft the same as the Lightfast and Luminance.
I think unfortunately with the popularity of the Lightfast and new Luminance colors, wonderful Pencils such as the ColourSoft get a bit lost, but I am convinced once everything settles down, Pencils like the ColourSoft will find their place again, especially with the prominence from artists such as your good self and Cindy Wider etc. Thank you so very much for your wonderful comment, thank you so much.
@@TheArtGearGuide Thanks for your thoughts. I also use the Tombow Irojiten pencils. They are also really quite nice. They're harder but very pigmented. I also just got the 72 set of Lyra Polycolor oil=based pencils. Very nice and I'm having fun with them. Keep up the good review videos!
I love my coloursoft pencils....my drawings are done without solvent and layer upon layer of light layers, though I find you can't get real fine detail. In Australia they are $200 plus, but totally worth it. You can replace each individual pencil when needed
So I heard that these pencils are supposed to be like Prismacolor, my unfulfilled dream, and since Prismacolors are kinda hard to get in Germany (only through Amazon dealers that mostly treat the pencils horribly and through two little online stores where they are often sold out) and they have those famous breakage issues, I decided to give these Derwents a try. I got them today actually, lol, not even a full set, just a couple of pencils to try out. So far I just tried some blending and mixing and drew a little character - I am impressed. I like these pencils very much and I am planning on buying a set. Unfortunetaly, I am still dreaming of Prismacolor, lol. Seriously, I have watched so many videos here on youtube celebrating Prismacolor, I have come to think of them as some magical unicorn pencil that draws, blends and mixes all on it's own, even though the lead sometimes slides out of the core in the process, lol. I already know that one of these days I will have to shell out the money to buy at least a small set of Prismacolors just so I can be at peace, regardless of how wonderful these Derwent pencils may be. But yes, these Derwents are very nice, I am very glad that I decided to try them and I know that they will be a wonderful addition to my other colored pencils.
The Derwent ColourSoft are gorgeous pencils and I am glad you got a set of pencils you like. As for the Prismacolor, one of our U.K. Coloured Pencil Society Members runs her own online store selling all sorts of pencils and she sells all of the Prismacolor pencils and when she ships them to you they are incredibly well protected. Emma runs the Coloured Pencil Shop bit.ly/ColPenShop and the Prismacolor pencils are £1.80 per pencil. She doesn’t sell sets of the Prisma, only open stock. You should check out the link and take a look at the stock and Emma posts all over the world.
I use them and I like them. I use them with other brands because they cover nice. I find that they work better in lighter layers. Too much pressure and they clog the paper
That grey-green is SO pretty!!
I know Michele, you are so right, Derwent have some beautiful colours in their line, I think they go out of their war to create unique colours to them, even if it is only shade. Thanks so much for stopping by my channel and commenting, I really appreciate it.
+Coloured Pencil Reviews I love your reviews.....and I trust Marty so you must be an upstanding guy 😉😉. Thanks for doing these reviews....I think you do an awesome job!
Michele Johnson-Utter thank you so much for your kind words. Marty is awesome, we have quite a bit in common and I think that's why he took to me, we've developed quite a friendship and I couldn't think of a nicer friend than Marty to have.
Thank you Harry for all your written ("Color" magazine) and you tube evaluations. Very helpful!
You are more than welcome Ruth and thank you so much for your lovely comment
I use Derwent coloursoft for adult colouring books and I love it!!! I am not professional artist but I enjoy colouring and these pencils are soft as butter to colour.....! :)
Hi Ruta, I don't know about saying your not an artist, I've seen some of the work on those adult colouring books and they are amazing, I'd definitely say people adult colouring are artists. Any way, I've heard a lot of people say they like to use the Derwent Coloursoft when using the adult colouring books, I think they must be a popular choice within the community. Thanks for stopping by my channel and I hope you check in regularly for more reviews.
Thank you for the great video!!! I love it!!! :) And best wishes from adult colouring world! ;) ;) ;)
The Art Gear Guide reading this makes me happy because people make fun of me when I colour
I'm so glad I found this video! Prismacolor was my first colored pencil love, and I have been looking for something comparable with better quality control. I have been wanting to try these for a while and now I am definitely going to have to give it a go!!
Shana Rowe Jackson wait Shana, don't rush out yet and get the coloursoft. I have been so lucky that Derwent sent me the full 72 set of their brand new ProColour to review and I can say this at least so far, I think the ProColour are going to please so many people. I'll pm you on Facebook and let you know a bit more.
Okay, sounds good!!
I do adult coloring and have accumulated several sets of pencils. My least favorite are Tombow and Arteza. My most favorite are Polychromous and Prismacolor.
I just got a set of 24 of these and havent really started using. you did a good job with this review.
Following Harry´s advice I bought a few pencils and my first impression was that i hated them. But slowly, slowly i doodled with them and they started to grow on me...and grow, and GROW, and now i love them and bought the all set. I think they are very soft but in a dry way, almost like pastels. I like to mix them with other pencils, pastel pencils , derwent drawing or graphitint, prismacolor, polychromos , polycolor, panpastel, you name it. Derwent pencils are thick and very good to hold in ones hand. The leads are thick also and allow lots of freedom when drawing. I WISH ALL THE PENCILS WERE BUILT LIKE DERWENT PENCILS. I don´t do realism nor botanical drawing...more of an impressionist style....no, I dont have a style, I wish I had, nor technic, but like most of us, I love to draw and Derwent makes me happy. And the art gear guide too!!! There...I sad it!!!!( forgive misspelled words) - Paula From Lisbon.
I enjoyed your review very much of these Colorsoft pencils. I swatched them and then set them aside. I was not that impressed due to I had the 150 Prismacolor set. I absolutely love Prismacolor, and I have no problem with breakage. I did in the beginning a few years ago, but I bought a different, manual sharpener with a handle crank on the side, which I feel is great for Prismacolor. An instructor who uses Prismacolor a lot recommended the Dahl 133 sharpwner. I also handle Prismacolor pencils as if they cost me $400, i.e., no dropping or being rough with them.
In your review, you mentioned a few colors you have not seen in colored pencils. So I feel I will bounce back and forth between Derwent Colorsoft and Prismacolor. Thank you once again. I always enjoy and take your suggestions. You are the one person I trust most.
What’s the difference between the coloursoft the procolour and the artist pencils from derwent
Hi Amber thank you so much for your question. So in real simple terms, the Coloursoft have a really soft core, the Derwent Artists are the complete opposite with a hard core and not as pigmented as the Coloursoft and then the ProColour is smack bang in the middle of both pencils.
I actually completed a really detailed comparison of the three pencils you mention but I included the Derwent Lightfast in the comparison as well. This is the written review bit.ly/2PntUzP and this is the video comparison link bit.ly/2O8VVXw.
I actually completed artwork with all four pencils, the same piece and compare the four different art works at the end.
If you have any more questions after watching or reading the comparison, please don't hesitate to contact me and as whatever you like. I am always more than happy to help out and if there is something I am unable to answer I will contact the company for you and get it answered.
Thank you so much for your question.
The Art Gear Guide. What is the best sharpener to use the with the coloursofts and the procolours please?
I found the best way to wet blend these is with alcohol based blender marker u can then go over them much better and blend with the polys or more layers hope that helps
Man Harry! You know I shared with you that I got my 120 set of Poloychromos just last week. What I didn't share is that I was toying with getting the Derwent line In Coloursoft before I settled on the Faver-Castell. I might add that I am somewhat disappointed in their performance. I have finally come to the conclusion that my favorite pencil is those with a soft core such as this Derwent line. Oh well, huh? Well, thanks again for all you do and we're thinking about ya from across the big pond!
Another excellent review Harry! Thanks so much!
Thanks a million Helen for your kind comment I really appreciate all you support.
Great review Harry. They are softer, but I like that about them. What a great set as well. Have a great weekend Harry. ~Marty
Cheers Marty, thanks for your comment, in fact Marty, if you look through your messages from me, you'll find before I got to know you, I asked you a few questions about these pencils and got them on your feedback from that message I sent you. All the very best my friend and have a fantastic weekend.
Coloured Pencil Reviews Hi Harry - Have you tried the Derwent XL Graphite blocks? Just wondering because I haven't reviewed them and I hear other Artist's talking about them from time to time. - Marty
I have had one of these pencils break, one of the reds. About a quarter of an inch fell out so I glued it back in with glossy accents and its sharpening fine again. I think the wood they are made from isn’t the best, well, my set anyway but I do love them for my colouring. They are very soft and plenty of pigment. I haven’t tried gamsol or zest it with them but plan to. I think for the price they could use better quality trays, I really dislike thin plastic trays that bend and distort when you try to pick them up.
I have to say that I saw the video of the Lisa Lachry Fine Art review for this Derwent Soft pencils, and I was thinking of buying these Derwent soft pencils, because I wanted to know which one was better, between the Prisma and these pencils. I was in between these two brands, but when she reviewed, that she said it didn't blended well, and they wasn't lightfast, I didn't buy them. I took her opinion into consideration , and bought the Prismancolors Premier, and I'm not sure if they are lightfast, like the Derwent Soft. So thank you for this video! I know those colored pencils aren't that bad.
love your videos very well done.i bought a 24 set of coloursoft pencils and love them then i tried a 72 set of prismcolour premier. they kept breaking when i sharpen.so i seen the derwent colour soft pencils in a 72 set tin on amazon for $ 98 regular price $170 so i got them.i had paid $ 65 for my prismocolour 72 dont wast your money on them
hi, harry, do u think u could do a review of the polycolor Koh-i-noor and the polycolor from lyra? which one is better and why
Hi Julio thanks so much for stopping by the channel. It is really funny you request these pencils, only yesterday I ordered a set of Polycolor from Lyra as I've wanted to try them for ages. So in answer to your question I'd love to review both these set for you and will be very soon. Thanks so much for the request and I look forward to reviewing these pencils for you. I have heard really good things about the Lyra so can't wait to try them myself.
Hi Julio I'm so sorry for the delay in getting this review done for you, I've ordered and received both brands of pencils and will be recording and editing then uploading my review in the next few days. Like I say I apologise for the delay but I've not been feeling too good with my spine and had loads of other family related things to do. I just wanted you to know that I had not forgot and will be adding the review soon.
Great review by the way! Thank you!!
Thank you for your wonderful reviews ! I have one set of 72 and very please with them. At some point, I like the purples and pinks colors much but the greens like green, mid green and pea green make me feel they are too artificial. beside that lime and yellow green are really great.
Hope to see more review videos from you in future !
Hi Hân mate, thank you so much for stopping by my channel a and commenting. I know what you mean about those particular colours you've mentioned, I think you always get one or two colours that look a bit artificial. Having said that I think in the Colorsoft and 120 set of Derwent Artists set, there are some really beautiful unique colours, earthy and excellent skin tones, ranging through all the wonderful skin colours that makes our world so amazing. All the best my friend and thank you so much for your support I really appreciate it.
+Coloured Pencil Reviews : I use the colorsoft combine with the drawing, everything turn to smooth.
I hope they will expand the colorsoft range more to 120 like the artist range.
Great review Harry, they seem quite lovely. I found their skin tone blister set of 6 while looking at some other art supplies on Amazon and felt it was a great set to try out...I mean can't go wrong with skin tones heh XD And after watching your review (also interesting you used the Faber Castell pencil eraser because that too is on my to-buy list haha) I'm pretty much convinced on getting that set. Thanks for this!!
Hello, i got a question... are they chalky? But I buy a set of 36, but I dont like it, because they are very chalky, hard and doesn't have vibrant colors. I saw some reviews, but nobody said they're chalky. Maybe they will be old?
Hi Leo. The set I reviewed was not chalky, not in comparison to the Stabilo Carbothelo. Roughly about the time I reviewed the Derwent Pastel Pencils, Derwent changed the ingredients of their pastels, but I am not sure obviously as to which set you have. Have you recently purchased the pencils? You may just have a set containing the older ingredients. However I have to say that I personally have not compared the pencils, I have only used the new pencils and not the old, so I can’t say for sure that the older ingredients made the pencils chalky or not. I will however try to find this out for you and will get back to you with a more concise answer. I am sorry I have not been more help, thank you so much for your question and watching the video
@@TheArtGearGuide i love your reviews, thank you for answer me. I bought it 6 years ago, the package is purple with the fruits draw. I bought the artist version last year, but it's feels hard too. The lead is hard like the colorsoft and the has no vivid colors too. I bought both in amazon. I want to try the procolors, but I am disappointed. Maybe the amazon stock is old, beacuse the derwent blenders are so hard and chalky too.
awesome video ....should i buy darwent coloursoft for realistic portrait drawing
I have quite a few derwent pencils including the coloursoft. I noticed that chunks of core comes out of the pencil. Not as if I had sharpened it and then it breaks. Brand new pencil, never even took it out of the box and a good cm falls out for no reason whatsoever. Does anyone else have this problem? Thank goodness their customer services is pretty good, I just send them an email with photos and they replace it in less than a week.
Hi Andrea, I've got to say this has not happened to me with Coloursoft, however, my set is fairly new, Christmas 2015. But as you mentioned, the Derwent Customer service in my experience has been first class and although I've never needed a product replaced, I know they are excellent with this type of problem. When this happened to my Prismacolor Premier pencils, I lost entire pencils without ever using them to the core breaking and falling out, I even tried the oven trick, but to no avail lol. I contacted Prismacolors customer service and whilst they were very nice, they told me that they couldn't help customers outside America, as they didn't sell Prismacolor themselves outside America. Which I suppose is legitimate, but when you've spent £59 on 72 coloured pencils and 18 of them need sharpened below half way before you can even begin using them, it is a bit frustrating. Thank so much for stopping by the channel and commenting, I really appreciate it.
I know the pains of prismacolours! The cores keep breaking on me! But I love using them so have no idea what to do. I think I'll buy a small set of these first to see how I get on with them. Thanks for the video :)
I have these and i Love drawing with them!
I have an older set if coloursoft. What are the differences between vintage 1988 set. I love Derwent. I have lots of Derwent line, older ones. Just wondering what I am missing.
I love your channel so much. Hugs from Canada 🇨🇦.
Great video Harry!! 😆👍 You definitely make a good point about each person using each tool differently. This is all a part of one's artistic journey. I think Lisa does a wonderful job on product reviews and as you mentioned does say whether or not it works for her style. I have a few derwent products (not these), but I have to admit it is a bit frustrating with how many below 6s they have in their other sets. This one appears to have more pencils with higher lightfastness than others and that's good. I have seen in Marty Owens' review where he mentions that Derwent tends to rate higher on their lightfastness then they actually are. It was the graphitints video if your interested. Just something to watch out for. At some point I will do all of my own lightfastness tests so I know how each color performs. I plan on adding a UV spray section to the test so there are no questions on performance. 😉
Hi Valarie, yeah I seen Marty's review and so I wasn't sure what was right or wrong in terms of lightfast rating, so that was why I checked on their web site and they produced this chart. I don't know what sort of testing they do for lightfast, but I hope they wouldn't publish something on their site if it wasn't correct. Lightfast ratings is always a tricky thing and I'd love to know exactly what the process is for testing by all the coloured pencil companies. As always Valarie, thank you so much for stopping by my channel I really appreciate your comments and support, thank you so much.
+Coloured Pencil Reviews I agree, I wish I knew how they did their testing as well. I figured the Arizona sun and 7000ft elevation with a thinner atmosphere (where I live) will definitely tell me how all the products perform...lol😉 From what I heard from several different artist videos, tests seem to run 3 months, 6 months, and then 9 to 12 months in direct sunlight. I just want to see if they will fade or not, so I can choose which colors not to use and to be able to give a very clear suggestion to my clients/collectors, though I am sure most know not to hang in direct sun...I hope! 😆
+Coloured Pencil Reviews P.S I am always glad to see you have posted a new video. You are doing great! 😆👏
Excellent review, Harry, as always.
Do you prefer these to Polychromos?
Hi Harry, going through your videos, trying to decide what company to go with on my next set. my first good set was the prismacolor 150 and I've become quite frustrated with them, cores breaking horrible wood casings. I'm loving your reviews, but can I ask a favor, I know your in the UK but when u quote the price could u give the amounts in US dollars also? I know a lot of us live in the US also. thanks! keep up the great reviews/work!!
Hi Harry! First of all I apologize for my really bad english skills... I still try to improve them ^^ I think that if you really like the creamy feel of your Prismas and their colour vibrancy, you really have to buy a full set of Holbein coloured pencils! They have the pros of Prismas and Polychromos without the cons! A magnificent range of vibrant colours with those 50 pastels you can’t find anywhere else (Maybe the Felissimo ?), no breakage, less wax bloom and better blending abilities than Prismas (I promise)!! I’m not a sponsor but if you love your Prismas, you’re going to adore the Holbein 😊👍🏼. Thank you for all your reviews... you’re a boss 😂‼️ Hugs from Belgium 👋🏼
Thank you so much Véronique for your kind comment and your English is perfect 👍. I have a 36 set of Holbein and did a review on them a while ago, it will be on my channel and on my web site, you are absolutely correct about them, they are gorgeous to use and I absolutely love them. I just worry about the lack of open stock availability, I would buy the 160 in a heart beat if I thought I could get them easily open stock. Thank you so much for your lovely comment
Hi, have a 72 set, I got in US I think about $65 free shipping on Amazon. There ok, I'm not even close to being an artist, honestly, it depends on my mood, if I use and enjoy or not, and use accordingly, I personally think they were a good deal. Happy creating and again, loving your reviews!
You mean it depends on your mood if you like the pencils or not? Why?
As of December 2019, US pice for these: $99 for a set of 72, $49 for a set of 36, $33 for a set of 24
So expensive, in my country, a colored pencils twin price is more than 100 dollars with price money
I love them and prefer them over Prismacolors. One thing I find them too expensive for the value. I’ve been waiting for a price reduction on Amazon, never happened. So recently 2 eBay marketplace sellers were selling 55 and 57 pencils. I bought them both. Of course, I have doubles and triples, but I only had to order 5 online to finish a complete set and saved £60 on the Amazon price. Over 80% had never been used.
These have gone up in price quite a lot since this review. Do you still consider them a good investment? The tin of 72 is now selling for £111 on Amazon.
Hi Harry, I finally got a small set of these to try out! THEY ARE AWESOME! I'm tooootally in love with them 😍 They feel so vibrant, smooth, soft and creamy...such a pleasure to use. I bought the 6 colour skintone set to try out..and now I feel like buying the biggest set ASAP haha. Just a bit confused if I should get the 36 set or the 72 lol. But I guess I'll figure something out. Thought I'd follow up on my previous comment, thanks for a great review again : )
Great review, sorry I am late to ask but I have the derwent drawing and a small tin of Coloursoft, like them both, I am wondering, in the tin of Derwent drawing they have a lovely wheat colour, is there anything near to this in the full set of Coloursoft? It's a colour that I use a lot and it seems to be a colour that most sets don't put in. Thanks
Hi Sandra, do you have a Facebook or Twitter account. I have layed down the four colours in the Derwent Coloursoft 72 set that are closest to the Wheat in the Derwent Drawing. None of them are the same, the wheat colour is just amazing and quite unique I think. The colours that are simulate are, Peach; Pale Peach, Cream and Light Sand. Hope this helps you, I just think the Derwent drawing set is totally unique and why so many artists love them so much.
+Coloured Pencil Reviews hya guess what, Amazon had them on their Prime Time deal last week, full set for £35 of course, I couldn't resist them, I used them today and am as pleased with them as I am with all the other brands I have, thanks for replying, will check you out on FB. Keep up the good work :)
Can someone explain me what does the "light fast written" mean?
When artists use coloured pencils, or any medium for that matter, under sun light, the colour will fade. However, the higher quality of the pigment and materials, the longer the colour in the art will remain true and not fade, this is what a lightfast rating refers to. There are different ratings, some are from 1-8 others are 1-3 stars, but they all mean the same thing. When you are doing a work of art for someone, the last thing you want is for your work to fade in a year or so, high lightfast rating with prevent this from happening. I hope this helps
Thank you very much! It really helped me!
By the way, I really like your reviews, keep it up!
I have a lot of different pencil sets. (Including Prismacolor.) My top three preferences are (1) Coloursoft, (2) Luminance, and (3) Prismacolor. Older pencil people I know say that Prismacolor was once an awesome pencil, but quality has greatly declined. I didn't have them when they were all that good.
Hi Elizabeth, that is an excellent top three pencil range you have there. Thank you so much for stopping by the channel and commenting.
My colour soft pencils broke almost as much as my prismacolors and sharpening them gave me blisters
Are these pastel pencils?
Hi there, no the Derwent Coloursoft are just a really soft cored Colored Pencil. Derwent do sell Pastel Pencils which I have reviewed bit.ly/2nPSisY this video mind is a bit old so the quality isn’t very good. I am trying to redo a lot of my older videos just to enhance the quality of the video and audio. Thank you so much and if you need any help please to hesitate to ask me and I will always do my best to help.
Good review. I have been following Lisa from Lachri for several years. I did see and did view again the test that Lisa did. I just received a 36 set of the Color soft for Father's day and felt bad because the gift giver did not know. I feel that these can be used for other techniques than that was used by Lisa. Thanks again for your review.
+Michael Parry Hi Michael, hope you had a fantastic Fathers Day and with a gift like that I'm sure you did. I still think you will enjoy using the Coloursoft, they are not ideal for the techniques Lisa uses and although that is a fantastic way to use coloured pencils I have so far managed to produce some nice work with my daughters Coloursoft which must tell you something as I'm not very good at all, but getting better all the time. All the best mate and would love to get your thoughts on them once you've had a chance to use them.
Coloured Pencil Reviews, after viewing your review and some other demos using the Color Soft, I am sure these will be fun. I do think that these will work great on a black or toned paper because of the ease of color transfer. Pencil work on black paper is very dramatic when done correct. Yes, I have a small set of the Inktense blocks and pencils. I haven't done much, but they are impressive. Have a great day.
Why would you take anything Lisa says as law for goodness sake? That is her opinion, everyone has one. There are many who think she thinks far too highly of herself and gives herself more credit than she deserves. There were many fine artists and masters who used cheap materials or whatever they could use, it didn't stop them from becoming Masters. Form your own opinions. Use what you are comfortable with. Most paint for pleasure, not thinking they are creating masterpieces to withstand the tests of time. Have fun. It's art. You're taking it way too seriously, don't take the fun out of it.
+Kathy Brenneman Hi Kathy, I totally agree with you regarding awesome artists that use whatever they can get their hands on and still create masterpieces. There is a guy on UA-cam who creates awesome art with ballpoint pens. With regards to Lisa, no matter what you think of her as a person, she is incredibly talented and a lot of experience. I obviously don't take what she says as law as in this video I love the Coloursoft and give them an excellent review whereas Lisa thinks very differently on them. I am sure there are some people who follow everything Lisa says, but even she says in her videos that she is only expressing her opinion and that people need to try the supplies for themselves to get a true account of them. Thanks for stopping by Kathy and I look forward to hearing from you again.
Kathy Brenneman I do appreciate what you say about the tools. A little before my time, not much, I do remember taught that sticks of burnt wood was used to draw on the wall of caves in France. I do and have followed Lisa for almost three years now. She is a very accomplished artist who has mastered the techniques to produce excellent work in color pencils. She does say her reviews are her opinion. Much of what she will say in a video is a great place to start. I agree with you that painting and drawing should be fun and not a serious chore. I appreciate your comments and views. You are so true when you say that great creations have come from simple and sometimes cheep materials. These Derwent products work great.
So far I find this very chalky and the tip breaks too easy. I guess it’s the way I color. These don’t get along will with me. Paper really makes a difference with these pencils.
I was annoyed with Derwent when I found out their Limited Edition Coloursofts (12 in a tin if memory serves) could not be replaced. I still have them all over a year later but I would love to be able to replace them but they are not part of the 72 set so that's that. I do have some others bought individually and recently I bought the Derwent Pencil Extenders to prolong their life for a bit longer. The Sea Green is probably one of my favourites. I also invested in an M+R brass sharpener bought from Cult Pens (along with spare blades) and this has been a revelation so far as the sharpening goes. The basic Derwent sharpener is useless and I nearly ruined a few of my pencils with it. The sharpener also does a brilliant job of sharpening my Faber Castell Polychromos pencils as well, plus there is an extra pencil extender that I can use for them, so that's handy. I'm 'only' a colourist but I love buying the Derwent brand as the factory isn't a million miles away and I love to support home-based manufacturing whenever possible. Great review by the way!✏️👍
Hi Jane. That isn't good, if they produced a limited Edition tin or box, I can understand that, but to produce a limited edition on the actual pigment and then stop them after a very short period is crazy. Have you spoke to anyone at Derwent? I find their customer service excellent, however I'm not sure what they could do to help. When you mentioned your favourite colour that got me thinking, is this colour in your limited set or another set? The reason I ask is because in the 72 set there is a sea green and a grey green, both are amazing colours. It's worth also making sure that the names on your limited edition colours have not been change and so a colour in your set may be called one thing but in the normal sets called another, but ultimately they are the same pigment. I'll have to look into that wee sharpener you are referring too, I'm always looking for good sharpeners.
The Sea Green was bought individually from the 72 range (and the Grey Green too) from the Pullingers website. I lose track I have that many lol. As for the sharpener, it really is excellent and the fact Cult Pens sell 10 extra blades as well makes it even better value in my opinion. Because it's brass it feels very 'weighty' in the hand and I can honestly say that not one of my pencils (Derwent or Faber Castell) have broken at the ends whilst using it, unlike the godawful Derwent version..and the Staedtler come to think of it! I did contact Derwent about the Limited Edition Coloursoft Pencils and they told me via email that they don't sell them individually because they aren't part of the original 72 set. Once they have worn down that's it, I won't be able to replace them..and, honestly, they are gorgeous pencils, the colours are so unusual. I notice they are about to discontinue the metallic ones (not Coloursofts) but I can get hold of those individually in Blackpool (an art shop called Granthams) for now. If I had known about the Limited Edition set-up I would've bought another set!
+Jane Metcalfe +Jane Metcalfe I'll definitely have to take a wee look at Cult Of Pens, they are a fantastic company and buy this sharpener. I think that is just mad about the limited edition colours, why would anyone in their right mind think that was a good marketing strategy to make a set of beautiful colours and the. Discontinue them. Also thanks for the heads up on the Metallic colours, I personally don't like or use them but my eldest daughter, who is an art student, loves them on black Winsor and Newton paper, so we will have to stick up on them, good job there is only 12 in that set lol. Thanks a million Jane for stopping by my channel and leaving excellent comments and information, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support, opinion, knowledge and views.
You're very welcome. By the way it was Owings Art (small world, eh?) who showed me the way regards the M+R pencil sharpener. He reviewed quite a few at once and his M+R was the barrel-shaped version with two holes in it (one for the jumbo pencils that I didn't have) which is why I bought the more conventional version from Cult Pens. I got really excited when it arrived because my pencils were being ruined by other sharpeners, to the point where my hubby started shaking his head and rolling his eyes. He gets the same treatment whenever he bangs on about the telly lol.
I wanted to get prismacolor but they are not available in my country i think i should get these instead derwent are easily available
Yeah the Derwent ColourSoft are quite close to Prismacolor, the ColourSoft pencil is soft but not quite as soft as Prismacolor and I find the ColourSoft core to be slightly drier than Prismacolor. I know people like to say Prismacolor is a wax based pencil and it has a lot of wax in it, but in my opinion there is also a significant amount of oil in them. If you buy an oil pastel and lay down a thick layer and do the same with Prismacolor, you will see and feel and similar result.
@@TheArtGearGuide hey thanks a lot for replying your channel is great for beginner artists. I just discovered your channel a week ago. You make great content.
Do derwent coloursoft have any sharpening issue i checked out some reviews on amazon and some people were complaining about lead break. Have you experienced any issue with them.
@@zoenaz12 hi Zoee, I have experienced this from time to time with ColouSoft but here’s the thing. The people that make reviews and actually complain about the pencils breaking during sharpening, are the ones who are always searching for the softest core pencil. But the softer the core the more issues you will have with core breakage during sharpening, it is just a fact of having a soft core pencils.
It’s not a coincidence that Prismacolor, Derwent ColourSoft and other soft cores pencils all have the same sharpening problems. The only advice I can give is this. Make sure if you are using a hand held sharpener that you are changing the blade on a regular basis. The oils and wax in Colored pencils eventually go a long way to helping blunt the blades. When you buy a pack of 10 new blades for an M&R brass sharpener and you place that new blade in, when you sharpen, it slices like butter. If the blade is blunt it cause snags and hacking of the core causing it to put pressure on the core internally right the way through the barrel, causing like a push pull effect, creating a weakness in the core.
A hand crank sharpener is also really helpful, they hold the pencil completely still and the blade inside rotates around the barrel and core.
If the core of the pencil is not Centred and this can happen from time to time, it doesn’t matter what sharpener you use, there will be issues so in this cause, use a craft knife, carefully, if you are not comfortable using a craft knife, ask a friend or relative who can. Always have a wee bit of sand paper in your kit so that you can refine the point. Using this method actually prevents waste. When you use a hand held sharper, so much of the core and barrel fall away. With a craft knife a lot less is wasted and when you use the pencil and the point becomes blunt, don’t sharpen it again, just use the sand paper and gently rub the core along the sandpaper whilst twisting it to ensure and even point.
Sorry my reply is so long but I hope it helps.
@@TheArtGearGuide thanks you give amazing tips i will make sure to keep new sharpeners to change when needed.
Sorry for the spoiler but he doesn't actually scribble with any of the colours; everything has been prepped before the video. Tries a bit of white, that's it
This was a very old video, I include full pieces of artwork using the products I’m reviewing in all my reviews as well as testing the pencil of different papers, Bristol smooth, velum, black, hot pressed 100% cotton etc, as well as layer test, blending test and OMS test
Is there a 120 set please
No Karen, unfortunately the only 120 set Derwent do are the Artist pencils, the Lightfast pencils are 100, all the others like the Coloursoft, Studio, Inktense, Watercolour are 72 sets and then the Drawing and Graphitint are only 24 sets but those two sets are just gorgeous in terms of colours.
Not a fan of Coloursoft at all. I had the 36 set plus about 20 individual colours i bought seperately and just did not like them. I tried them with a couple of different artists papers ie stonehenge, strathmore vellum 400 and Fabriano Artistico HP and they were ok on the vellum but the other two papers they were crap. Also the pinks and earthy colours just kept breaking as i was trying to sharpen them. I eventually gave them all away to my Oldest daughter. I'll stick to my polys :)
sniperwipers sorry you had that experience but I've heard a few artists say they don't like them. I guess it all depends on what type of effect you are trying to get. You see I didn't think they worked that well on Velum and they were excellent on Stratmore Colored pencil paper and Fabriano. But that is what makes art so amazing, everything is so subjective and for the most part everyone is happy with that. Thank you so much for stopping by my channel and I look forward to chatting with you again. All the best my friend and take care
Great review. I've had trouble with sharpening most soft pencils in the past, but hallelujah ! Someone advised trying a sharpener by KUM and IT WORKS. I find that the advice given for holding your pencil in your left hand and turning the sharpener works as well, goodness knows why, BUT IT WORKS. try it the sharpener only cost me £1.30 on line.
Same here! I was in tears when my prismas kept breaking but I bought a KUM online for cheap and almost two months later with heavy use I have had ZERO breakage or an unsuccessful sharpening.... its made me stick around with prismas when I thought I never wanted to see them again ;)
You are going to make me buy a small tin of Prisma Colour pencils now aren't you. I've avoided them so far but I am intrigued. And now you say these are similar, yet I thought Prisma would be much softer. I don't really like the ColourSoft that much. But that hasn't stopped me buying nearly all of them in open stock over time! I find them a bit gritty and hard to get the colour down. I'm mostly using adult colouring books though so perhaps the paper is wrong. I will get a pad of proper paper for drawing and try them on that. Some colours are more gritty than others.
Personally, and in the colouring books, I've not found them to layer well or to blend that well (blending pencil to pencil rather than with a medium of any kind). For me the FC Polys are the best at that.
Can't fault how they look though can you? And they are quite chunky. They only just fit in to my sharpener.
I'm not sure on the colouring books, but I do know that when using coloured pencil paper is very important, especially if your technique is lots of layering, the better quality the paper, i.e. Tooth and weight, the Prismas are softer than the Coloursoft but not by much, but this comes with its own problems as in my experience the Prismas have terrible quality control issues always breaking when sharpened, which can be very frustrating. I definitely think you should try a toothy paper with your Coloursoft and you will see a big difference. Thanks for stopping by my channel I really appreciate it.
The Art Gear Guide so they are a bit harder than Prismas? With “soft” in the name, I thought they would be super-soft, like the Derwent Drawing Pencils. I know Lisa loved the Drawing Pencils for fast background coverage. But these are harder? They look so similar.
Thats helpful i just got these after my refund from prisma
Again, Lisa from lachry doesn't know what she's talking about.
Hi Alfio, first of all thank you for stopping by my channel I really appreciate it. I wouldn't say Lisa doesn't know what she talking about, it's just my view of these pencils is different from hers and in fairness, Lisa always says on her videos that her opinion is only hers and that many others will have different opinions. I don't think anyone can deny that Lisa is an outstanding artist especially CP artist. After reading some of the comments on here and on many of her videos, she would appear to rub some people up the wrong way, but that I feel is more just personality clashes as opposed to professional criticism. But equally I respect your opinion.
I know what you mean, but I'm telling that It's not the first time I read something absolutely crazy from lachri.
I use Derwent pencils such a long time: if someone try to use coloursoft on techniques not compatible with the nature of pencil (such layering or OMS blending) It's not a pencil's problem but someone else.
Kiss my ass. :)
This paper seems wrong
M.E. Cornelis what seems wrong about it? Do you mean because it is Watercolor paper and I am using colored pencils?
W.O.W.
엥 젏은이...ㅋㅋ
I've played with the coloursoft WAY before Lisa put out that review. I honestly liked using them and had no problems and was surprised she didn't like them (and I've seen beautiful works done with these pencils). I can't say when it comes to the use of turpentine/odorless mineral spirit since I don't use solvents. The only annoying thing I've found with these pencils is that they have a lot of colors that are not up to par with the lightfastness. Therefore, it's another pencil line used for the sketchbook.
awesome video ....should i buy darwent coloursoft for realistic portrait drawing
