There is no two ways about it, my comparison between the Derwent Chromaflow and the Derwent ColourSoft was okay, but the real comparison everyone wants to see is that of the Derwent Chromaflow, Derwent ColourSoft and Prismacolor. In this review that is exactly what I have done, but I have also added two cheaper colored pencils that I think are quite soft cored from that particular price bracket.
Let me know in the comments what you think of the test completed, what your own experience of these pencils have been and if you think you know an even softer cored pencil let me know in the comments so I can check them out and compare them.

As always guys, thank you so much for your support I can’t tell you how much it means to me. You can of course support the channel by simply watching my videos to the end, reading the viewing the content on The Art Gear Guide and leaving comments along with likes, all for free, you have nothing at all to give and in return I am constantly giving away amazing art sets, free giveaways open to everyone no matter where you live in the world, I pay for postage.
If you would like to support the channel financially, of which all money goes back into buying art supplies to review and improving the production value etc, you can subscribe to my Patreon Channel. For as little as $2 a month you get access to many tutorials, colored pencils, marker, watercolor, pastel, mixed media etc. You can of course subscribe more than $2 a month, as much as $15 per month, but that is up to each individual and I set it at $2 because I wouldn’t everyone to gain access. Ive not added a tutorial in the past few months but I am working on a fantastic Absolute Beginners Guide to colored pencil artists and this has been so widely requested.
Finally, if you would like to follow my day to day personal life and get to know me and my family a bit better, you can click the links below and follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, I also have a Threads and TikTok which if you are on those platforms I’d love to see you over there. I am always adding work in progress images of the art projects I’m working on, photos and video clips of my Siberian Husky Koda and occasionally my family.

I have weak wrists but i still want dry methods because i find OMS messy and upping my paper requirements.
I recklessly went and ordered Chromaflow because i could hardly find them in local stores and this was the last pack in stock even though they were pricey for my budget. No option to try them out first either. But should've saved for prisma then?

I am a bit different than a lot of other people about prismas versus chromoflows. I love the results I get with prismacolor. However I feel that the chromoflows provide as beautiful a result with less frequent sharpening and breakages. Both types of pencils have beautiful color palettes. Since I do have both sets, I can grab a color from one that better fits what I am creating. I am using the chromoflows more now. This has been a great review. Thanks for all that you do for the art community.

I would very much have liked to have seen the castle arts soft touch in this test and possibly their gold line. Because although they keep a nice point the soft touch feel incredibly creamy and soft as you apply them to the paper. I also think that we need to conduct really extensive light fast testing on them because the quality of those pencils is more than I believe they are giving credit for. I live in Phoenix Arizona where we get 350 days of pure sunlight per year and I'm definitely going to run life fast testing on the castle arts lines that I have all those sadly I do not have the harmonious are there watercolor or woodless watercolor pencils. I wish I knew some way to get them to send me at least the harmonious and the watercolor pencil test as a professional photo realistic pencil artist. Thank you so much for doing this test as well as all the other reviews and tests that you do for us. You are my go-to for information concerning pencils because other people have too much personal opinion involved in what they do in my opinion. Set of color soft that I have is rather small I don't know how many pencils are available and they are incredibly ancient. They were a gift from a friend of mine when she got a new full set and I personally am not a great fan of them

Lots of people conduct their own lightfast test, some from as you say, Arizona and some from the UK or Europe where we get a lot less exposure to the sun, and there in lays the problem.
When the ASTM and Blue Wool standards conduct their lightfast testing of a product, it is done so under very strict condition, the same exposure to light, the light intensity, etc, it is all very scientific but strictly monitored so as to perform the exact same test on every set of colored pencils. It insures that for example, a set of Luminance is not being subjected to a more intense level of light than say a set of Derwent Lightfast. That would not be a fair comparison and at the end of the day would result in different outcomes, perhaps jeopardising the lightfast ratings.
When artists do their own tests, they tend to either leave a swatch on their windowsill or even stuck on the window, from the inside looking. In the case of Arizona, this testing in such a manner would result in pigments being subjected to sun light, in the summer months, from 05:00 hrs to 21:00. Not only that, but the gas would act as an intensifier for the light increasing the intensity of light. In this particular case, the results over the period of a a month in say July, would not yield promising results.
However, if an artist conducted the exact same test here in the North East of England, one of the bleakest areas on Earth lol, over the exact same period of time, in July for the full month on a windowsill, the results would be very different.
If both artists were asked to provide their results, I would hazard a guess that the artist living in Arizona would submit that the pencils not be very lightfast at all, whereas the English artist would argue much better results of the exact same pencils.
This is why so many companies pay huge amounts of Money to have their colored pencils tested under the ASTM or Blue Wool systems. Derwent had traditionally tested every single set of pencils under the Blue Wool system, and whilst expensive to receive that testing, it could be done in the UK. However, when they came out with the Derwent Lightfast colored pencils, they wanted to compete directly against the Caran d'Ache Luminance, which was the reason they wanted the pencils to break the traditional Blue Wool testing and go with the ASTM. This would make it much easier for artists to compare the pencils like for like.
However, this also meant that Derwent were going to have to use the ASTM centre in Arizona and this was going to cost a lot more money. It is this reason that the Derwent Lightfast and Caran d'Ache Luminance are expensive pencils, in fact any pencil tested in the ASTM standard especially, will be very expensive, the companies have to make their money back for the testing process somehow.
For you personally, when you create your art, do you sell the original pieces? or do you create prints and sell them? I am only asking because it is important to note that if you don't sell your original piece, using lightfast pencils is not essential. There are no hard and fast rules, if you want to use lightfast pencils there is absolutely nothing in the world wrong with that, I use them and I don't sell my original art.
I think what I am trying to say is, just because a pencil is lightfast tested, doesn't make it a better performing pencil than a non lightfast pencil. In the 10 years I have been testing, reviewing and demonstrating art supplies, I have tested some wonderful products that were both very inexpensive and non lightfast. When used on a Bristol Velum or Fabriano Artistico HP 100% Cotton paper, they produce work at the same level as the Derwent Lightfast pencils. The only difference is, the Derwent Lightfast work could be sold or hung in direct sunlight and not fade for many years whereas the work created with the cheaper pencils could not.
I know this is long, which I am very sorry for, but I don't know what level you are at with the colored pencil medium and I just don't want you to spend a lot of money unnecessarily on pencils you may not really need. I hope this makes sense and thank you so very much for your support I can't tell you how much it means to me, thank you.

Hi, I want just add a clarification about the Lyra pencils: the company that owns them is FILA, an Italian company that is well-known for its original pencils, which are Giotto ones. FILA has acquired several companies over the years, some of them very famous such as Canson, Arches, Strathmore, Princeton, Dixon, Daler Rowney and Lyra. Lyra was originally a German brand, and their pencils are still manifactured in Germany.

Excellent shout, I completely forgot all about them and I have a full tin of them within eye shot of testing pencils, I am an idiot. I would put the Derwent Drawing at a 9 in terms of softness. Whereas the Coloursoft feel dry and dusty yet very soft to me, the Derwent Drawing feel glossy and soft.
My head is empty at the minute and I am getting so many things mixed up, or wrong, or upside down. The Derwent Drawing absolutely should have been in the list.

Thank you so much for this comparison. I've tried Chromaflow, Black Edition and Coloursoft and sadly, I didn't find a replacement for Prismacolor. Prismacolor is very expensive in Europe, better to buy Luminance or Polychromos for this price. So I bought a set of 72 Chromaflow pencils, but I'm not satisfied with them, I would use them as they last, but not re-buy. I'm still in search of a perfect replacement. Very curious if Artxx pencils can be similar to the Prismacolor.

I have the polys and love them. I still wanted to try a softer pencil. I find the Prismas (like you) far too expensive here in Europe. 300 Euro for 150 pieces. Insane. (They're not that well made either, to be honest)
I was thinking of buying the Chromaflow so am curious why you didn't like them? Maybe you can give me some feedback. 🙂

Prismacolor could be a great pencil, but the production quality is just dreadful. I mean when I pay a ton of money for pencils I want to see pristine barrels, nice paint job, well aligned prints, centered cores... I want them to look beautiful when I first lay my eyes on them. I clearly remember when I opened my 150 Prisma set. I almost started crying when I saw the mess inside. I still regret buying them because there are other brands that could do the same, they are much more neat and waaaaay less expensive.

Hullo Harry, excellent review and explanation. I am surprised at my choice of the Derwent Colorsoft sphere as the “best” one of this bunch! It so happens that I don’t own any of them! I have always admired color pencil Artists! Amie Howard Art is an amazing artist who has a wonderful array of pencil art! The patience needed for pencil art is far out there! I have completed only a few artworks in pencil only. I have painted in watercolor then used color pencils for finishing touches. I switch between harder cores and watercolor pencils and Prismacolors. I believe that it just depends on what the subject of the picture has incorporated will determine the pencil used in multi media artworks.
