It’s a great song with powerful lyrics and as great as these singers are they lack the utter desperation and hopelessness that Gilbert O Sullivan gave the song when he performed it. These guys sang it too beautifully almost like a love song and it isn’t. It’s a song which wrestles with the sheer desperation and unfairness of life.
I love Diana Krall and Michael Buble and enjoy following them. However, I agree that O'Sullivan's version just grabbed the listener with a sense of hopelessness that we can all relate to at times.
Since listening to this I’ve checked out a few more versions on Spotify, but I’m afraid none of them can touch Gilbert’s original. You’re right, @deanharding740, desperation and hopelessness are exactly the emotions Gilbert is describing. It’s honest and heartfelt, and really, really sad. So, beautiful as this version is, and talented as this duo undoubtedly are, it doesn’t touch my heart like the original.
@@rosanamelin56 OMG, I was out and about yesterday, and this song came up on my IPOD and nearly brought me to tears! NOT this version, but the original by O'Sullivan!! I lost my Dad first and then my Mom shortly thereafter and this song just stirs up wonderful memories of them. Sorry D&M but no one will ever duplicate the feelings and emotions that Gilbert's version does! I have some of Bublé's stuff and his does sing a soft tune!
When Diana started the first verse, Karen Carpenter popped into my head. I am a long-time fan of both their voices. This is a terrific duet for Diana and Michael. It's a timeless song and they've brought it back to relevance. Congratulations, and thank you!
Canada produces the most beautiful singers. Must be something in the water. fabulous! I’ve been a huge kdlang fan forever. And how about Anne Murray and John Denver and Shania Twain the list goes on and on.🎶❤️🎶
Beautiful rendition of this song. Gilbert's recording came out the year after my father suddenly died at age 47, when I was 14. I would cry during the last verse, thinking of my poor mom.
Oh my what a young age to lose your father. I'm so sorry. I used to cry to this song too but for altogether different reasons, namely a boy I had a crush on at age 10 who looked like Gilbert O'Sullivan a little. But when I heard this song again in the 90s, after my father had died in 1992, I thought of my mother. Because she was 65 years old when my father died and he was the only one she ever loved.
One of the epic heartbreaking songs from the 70’s , up there with All by Myself, and Without you by Harry Neilson . These were the songs you took refuge in when you had a breakup. Sad songs are the greatest!
Without You isn't a song written by Nielson it's a cover of a song by Badfinger. Now that is a sad story. Two members of the band committed suicide as a result of the band being ripped off by their management. The original has far more emotion than Nielsons and don't even get me started on the Maria Carey version..
@@jhanbury1968 Thank you for recommending me "Clair", a song I didn't know. I have listened to it right now: another brilliant song. O'Sullivan was such a great melodist...
What a wonderful cover of a wonderful song. As an Englishman who has lived in Canada for the last 34 years I can’t help but feel a certain amount of pride.
Absolutely Beautiful Duet.... This is such a heartbreaking song, then and now. Peace and Blessings! Always remember that we are never alone as GOD is always with us; that's if we want Him and ask Him into our heart.
This song is truly a study of the intensity of sadness. Regardless of the circumstances, everyone can relate to its sorrow at some point in their lives. Gilbert’s version is exquisite ❤
Had Gilbert Osullivans LPs. Always loved this song. A beautiful rendition. Beautiful lyrics. A reminder when one is older and things happen that's heartbreaking.😢
I didn't know Diana Krall and Michael Bublé had recorded this song together. It's one of my fave songs! I love it covered by Donny Osmond, but this duet is also great! Thanks for sharing it.
It's a really unusual and beautiful song about feelings that don't often appear in popular music. Gilbert sang it with restrained passion. Jack Jones did a lovely cover. As one person commented, it's a solo song about pain even though their harmony is beautiful.
Oh how lovely. I remember the original and still love it and this is a great version too. Fab Gilbert O'Sullivan composition. If you don't know his other work look him up. His lyrics are something else ❤
Very nice understated arrangement behind them. Tasteful. An art lost in today's overblown stuff with the singers feeling the need to put a dozen notes on each syllable. It seems a lot of todays music can't find a balance. It's either clumsy and not very well done, or way too many notes. The balance here is refreshing. But then, every generation probably thinks their music is the best, so there's that. After all, music is the bookmarks of our lives.
Wow, just in awe of this rendition. Both my wife and I, although relatively young, remember the original, but, as has previously been said, did not appreciate the sentiment. So so powerful and has paid tribute to Gilbert's fantastic talent.
Sad, nearly suicidal depression in words, to beautiful music, and beautiful no drama performance. The lyrics printed in the video made me aware of them for the first time since the song was released in 1971. The lyrics and origin of the singer-songwriter now can only remind of an old joke from his country: two Irishmen left a bar
First time I hear this version. I thought it was good but It doesn’t capture the deep sadness that O’Sullivan’s version does. It’s one of my favorite songs of my youth but it brings back sad memories when I hear it.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Wishing you all the luck o' the Irish this St. Patrick's Day! ☘
May you find lots of gold at the end of your rainbow. 🌈
This is my gold & rainbow ❤ - Thank you
Thank you! It does remind me of my heartbreak but I am fine again being alone..
God save Ireland
And God save the Irish
There is no such day as "St. Patty's Day ' and no such figure - either historical or mythical' - as "St. Patty"!
Agree

I prefer the original. This rendition lacks what the song is about.

Correct!!
Wow…that was a beautiful understanding of the song and it’s delivery. Thank you for sharing
I love the original version 😂😂😂😂
Much better!
Gilbert O'Sullivan
Nothing better than the original Gilbert O’Sullivan
What a brilliant artist he was
Wish they still made songs like this
Gilbert's version is the best ever

I agree. Gilbert O Sullivan's voice made me cry. I am sorry for your loss. I have lost both parents and recently found GOS. Made me 😭

Nice version of this great song by2 of my favorite singers ❤🤩‼️However, the best version is the original by Gilbert ❤❤❤
agree 100%
Two Canadian singers. Singing s great song. What a nice pairing
True acers' talents from Northland ❤❤❤❤❤❤

That had to be tough since you were only 14. Very sorry to hear this. Hugging you real tight. ❤️

They just don't make songs like this, with such beautiful lyrics, anymore. Those were the days ❤
Gilbert is one of the most underrated songwriters of a generation. His lyrics / rhyming are second to none.
Must agree his music is feel, feel, feel.
Saddest song with a pretty melody I’ve ever heard
Such a beautiful but sad song. I love the original but these two did a wonderful rendition!!
Hi Maris💐💐
Gilbert is a genius poet and he talks about reality (for some people). His music is a story! Great rendition also.
The lyrics really are very sad but it’s a beautiful song.
I loved this song by Gilbert and this version is superb. These two sound great together

Such an incredibly heartbreaking song and yet beautiful.
A real pleasure to hear them sing together.

I've heard this song a million times in my life but never before really listened to the words. What a heart breaker

What an incredible composition... One of my favourite songs EVER.

🤗. Please enjoy.

Gilbert is Irish in case you think he is British.
This is epic. And when the harmonies come in it is simply beautiful
A heart-breaking song (but done very well by these two fine vocalists), it is filled with pain. No one knows the suffering you've endured.
Beautiful song and always has been
Wow! Two marvelous artists from Canada ❤
Love Gilbert ❤️ version but also great duet by these two
That was fantastic. My mother, God rest her soul, passed away 11 years ago this week leaving dad alone until his death 5 years ago.
Absolutely Beautiful Duet.... This is such a heartbreaking song, then and now. Peace and Blessings! Always remember that we are never alone as GOD is always with us; that's if we want Him and ask Him into our heart.
I never thought I would like any other version of this great song ! But you’ve proven me wrong. Well done, Ray 🇬🇧
Fabulous song a tribute to Gilbert a great songwriter!…..thankyou❤

The lyrics in his songs are just magical.🧙
I appreciate both great singers: DIANA and MICHAEL.
Never paid much attention to this song back in the day. But this version really made me appreciate it anew. What a great team on this special song.
Exactly what I was thinking. Thank you.
Always loved this song♥️
Lovely song sung by 2 great artists…
This will always be Gilbert O’Sullivan’s song, but this arrangement with Diana and Michael is gorgeous!

The surprising touch of talent make this music so special. Keep make people hapy Diana Krall
Although I like Diana Krall and Michael Bublé I find the rendition by Gilbert O'Sullivan more touching, natural and heartbreaking.
