My brother is mentally challenged, he took a lot of bullying and abuse growing up. We were teenagers when this song debuted, I remember he took it as his own testament. Thankfully now, in the autumn of his years, my brother has found peace and meaning, a Church home where he is loved for who he is. Incredible, the confidence he quietly displays. I'm told by members that my brother doesn't say much but when he does it's best to listen. But whenever I hear this song, I think of our younger days , his hardships and loneliness and thank God that it no longer applies to him.

One of my all time favourites . I used to play it over and over back in the day. I’m now 62, widowed when 40, and still listen to 70’s songs. Best era for music in my opinion ❤
The best era for music is always the current one. You have people pushing music to new places as always, but you also have people obsessed with every preceding era of music making their own new and improved takes on it. Trouble is the older you are the more difficult it is to find these niche modern artists.
@@Pavideus Such a trend with many just stuck on music from their own teenage years - 20s. I hope to always be open for new music because the old the new all can be so good with some of the raw creative music talent out there.

It's crazy how a good song can take you back to a moment that happened decades ago and it's like you are there in that moment again and can recall everything about it. There are songs that do this to me too. I am sorry you have lost family and friends, I am going through that now, very few people are still here with me. Thankfully music never dies. Gilbert this song is a masterpiece. It truly is. The lack of recognition you get in Ireland is baffling to me. Although you are gone from here for a long time, you're an Irish boy at heart and always will be. You should be hailed as a national mucial icon for what you have achieved. When you consider some of the clowns that get the acclaim here, its outrageous. I am 42 years old and the name Gilbert O Sullivan should be a household name here. I've heard and loved a lot of your songs over the years and to my eternal shame, wasnt aware of just how many of those old great hits were written by yourself. Given the fact you are STILL creating new music and touring, RTE should be ashamed of themselves for not having begged you to be on it mulitple times. But when it comes to RTE, nothing surprises us anymore. I wish you all the best and from 1 proud Irish fan, thank you.
Gilbert O Sullivan, I am 66years old now, this song and and all your songs are still making me feel exactly the same as when I was teenager, your voice and every song made me smile back then and to this day....lovely memories of lad I loved at school and still do really. Happy memories. I still smile when I hear your voice. 🙂 Thanks for the memories ❤ x
This song tem os a very sad and unusual story. It tells the story of a young man who wants to jump tô the top of a tower when nos fiancee abandous him at the altar. Te also remember the death of his father and the sadness of his mother when she was widowed. Later, he is let alone and abandoned after his mother's death. It is sad, because he ends up questioning God, who let him so alone, again.
My deep condolences to you. I know how sad you feel. I lost my younger sister to Covid 3 yrs.ago. I miss her everyday. Bless you. He will always be with you.🙏🏽⭐️
This is the only song that I can’t listen to only once it has to be at least 3 times . It affects me on a way that no other song does.truly one of the most profound songs ever composed.
I am 14 years old, lost my beloved grandpa some months ago, he was 74, the day my parents told me about it, I couldn't think in any other thing, i just cried and cried all day, and that week too, this songs renembers me of those moments, I heard it to renember my grandad, and to think about all things. I still miss him so much, I sometimes cry for him, this song is just pure art.
Absolutely beautiful. I lost my lovely Dad in 1979. He was just 48. I've never truly got over it and he's been in my thoughts every day since. My windowed Mum is now 90 and we don't really talk about him too much as doing so is tricky. My wife says I should have had therapy years ago, and she's right.
Some things are hard to explain, but If I recommend something for you, I would be read about the death: Many lives, Many masters by Brian Weiss or Dying to be me by Anita Moorjani. I hope they are comforting for you.
When you're a kid you really don't realize how good someone like Gilbert is. When you get older you realise how absolutely brilliant he is. His lyrics are unbelievably brilliant
I remember my grandparents and family .Think of them often. Then you lose your parents and family. Heartbroken with every loss. So blessed to have had them in my life, but the sadness remains.
I remember listening to this song back in the summer of '72 and hearing this made that time seem like yesterday. I was 19 then and the song made me realize that some day there will be sadness (for you or for someone who loves / cares about you).

I guess misery does love company.
I first heard this song at 13 years old when my grandfather (widowed) played it, I’m 19 now and recently moved away from home for university and listen to this almost daily just to feel closer to home, this song is one that plucks at my heart strings
I remember when i first heard this song it really hit home since i was left at a specialized hospital when i was 7 i was lucky to see my parents once a week so i spent 6 days out of the week alone and every time i saw them leave i was alone again naturaly i was there for a year

Some people are just great at getting their point across. Tell a life story in 3 minutes. Amazingly, this song was not a personal experience. I watched a short with him talking about writing this song. He knew he needed a word after the sentence "alone again..." He tried many words but none sounded right. "Naturally" just came to him one day.
Though this song is truly heartbreaking. I cant help but have a mix of fond and somber feelings memories of my eldest daughter as a little girl and us watching and loving the movie " Ice age ( the meltdown) singing this song together though things wasnt going very well for us then we got through it and this song kindah helped bring us together. Shes 18 now and in my 39 years of living now i remember these ups and downs and reflect on my past ( me at 18) and what her future will be at 39.❤❤❤.
I was 18 in August '72. Trying out for a small time college football team. Would listen to this beautiful song evenings after practice. For whatever reason, this song would inspire me to go all out in practice. I made the 1st team and got a scholarship. Thank u for bringing this song to the forefront and the memories it created.

Muchas gracias Gilbert.
My grandpa passed away 32 years ago before my mom got married, my grandma became a widower for 30 years until she finally died in April 2022 to a terrible stroke when I was doing an exam in 6th grade. I remember my grandma tearing up while being not able to speak when my mom showed her a picture of my grandpa. My mom still misses them everyday, and she would play their favourite songs often.
After hearing his quirky masterpiece "Nothing Rhymed," a song I thought should have easily made the top 10 here in the US, I eagerly awaitied his follow-up. I was rewarded in spades when this song was released and became the biggest hit of 1972. He pulls off the formidable feat of making a song about outright despair sound so full of hope and even cheer as if to say that there's light at the end of even the darkest tunnel. Because of this, I will always have a place in my heart for Gilbert O'Sullivan.
That song makes me remember my childhood at 8 yrs. Don't understand the (sad) lyrics at that age, but since then thought what a marvelous music. At that age I had my father that passed away, just who bought the tape...
Hey, I know going through these tough times feels like hell, but if you've made it this far, you've surely gone through a lot of crap along the way to get here. Don't lose hope; there are definitely people who love you, and you yourself have to find the moment and the time to love and take care of yourself. If you ever want to talk or anything, we can be friends. Sending you a hug.

In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top
Will throw myself off
In an effort to
Make it clear to whoever
Wants to know what it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Were people saying, My God, that's tough
She stood him up
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about, God in His mercy
Oh, if he really does exist
Why did he desert me
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do
What do we do
Alone again, naturally
Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
tragically beautiful

Actually, I would say the lyrics, tune, and chords are all more complex than those of your average 70s pop song.
the saddest song of all time
You know you're going through a tough time when you're listing to Gilbert.
you are right but that's the beauty
no its a celebration of love ...remember
I didn't know he was Irish. Thought he was English.
You must listen Ardhito Pramono - Waking up together with you. He was inspired by this song. He is a fan of it.
It’s 8:52 am, the song has been on loop since I woke up. It’s just that kind of day. The sun even is left alone behind the clouds, the day’s grey.
How about today? Sun shining, I hope.
This song 🎶 came out in 1972- the same year that my Mom died suddenly. I was 13 but this song 🎵 really meant a lot to me!! 😢💕

❤Beautiful song!

😢
Such prolific lyrics. This song still touches my heart, after all these decades.
me too.
"Prolific" lyrics or "profound" lyrics did you mean? Probably the latter and if so, yeah I agree.
You must listen Ardhito Pramono - Waking up together with you. He was inspired by this song. He is a fan of it.
My beloved brother passed away 16/06/2024

@@SuperJess54321 My condolences to you and your family.
This is the only song that I can’t listen to only once it has to be at least 3 times . It affects me on a way that no other song does.truly one of the most profound songs ever composed.
Beautiful I can hear my brother singing this in the heavens for me
I am 14 years old, lost my beloved grandpa some months ago, he was 74, the day my parents told me about it, I couldn't think in any other thing, i just cried and cried all day, and that week too, this songs renembers me of those moments, I heard it to renember my grandad, and to think about all things. I still miss him so much, I sometimes cry for him, this song is just pure art.
Very sorry to hear about your grandfather. Time is a great healer and I’m sure he will be very proud of you. I too agree this is a beautiful song.
Number one for six weeks in the summer of 1972-A certifiable classic!
I remember it. A sad summer. Parents just got divorced, I felt this song.
Yep. I was a freshman, at a new school in a new town (Air Force brat), and I still feel this song....deeply.
You must listen Ardhito Pramono - Waking up together with you. He was inspired by this song. He is a fan of it.
Sold over TWO million in the States when people actually had to go out and buy a single.
I'm 60 now, and listen to my 70 and 80 music 🎵. Love that era. Such good times ❤🎉
Listening to this song for the first time brought tears to my eyes. The lyrics are amazing, and the vocals are too.
My dog loved this song. He died today. Anyone here in 2024?
So very sorry. I have lost so many dogs and cats over the years. Heaven is a place where all the pets you have ever loved come out to greet you.
Mi más sentido pésame, un abrazo.
So sorry for your loss. I dread the day that I lose my boi.
Sorry for your loss!
😢my sincere CONDOLENCES pets are GOD'S extended family 😢❤🐕🌈
It's about time this song was uploaded officially ❤️
Affascinante? Questo pezzo fresco? Con ari di gioventù? Delizioso? ✋💥👑🐕👻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When you're a kid you really don't realize how good someone like Gilbert is. When you get older you realise how absolutely brilliant he is. His lyrics are unbelievably brilliant
I remembered this song after years, and now that I'm the only one left in my family home this song hit me harder than ever.
I wish you peace

The universality of grief, pain & disappointment. The price we pay for love.

I remember my grandparents and family .Think of them often. Then you lose your parents and family. Heartbroken with every loss. So blessed to have had them in my life, but the sadness remains.
A life lesson in this brilliant song,Gilbert O'Sullivan is an understated writing genius.
I remember listening to this song back in the summer of '72 and hearing this made that time seem like yesterday. I was 19 then and the song made me realize that some day there will be sadness (for you or for someone who loves / cares about you).
wonderful lyrics.........wonderful tune...........I bought this on 7" vinyl when it came out. I knew every word then and still do 52 years later. Was also covered by Shirley Bassey - says everything.
Alone again, truly a blessing.
One of my first single records that they bought me at my request, I was 8 years old in 1972 🥰
lol me too
I was about 11 years old by that time. I already loved his music, my parents got a record-player and i got my first album from them: Back to Front. Still listen to it almost every day. The collection grew and i’ve got a lot of records and cd’s…..
Me encanta ❤
@@jennykonijnenburg3031, I was 11, I remember crying about this song in the early 70's when it came out and my hearing wasn't the greatest then and I thought the lyrics said (...at 65 years old, my mother died,God rest her soul.) and in 2001 at age 65 my mother was killed in the OR by a Dr that had killed before. They listed it as natural causes on death cert which is total BULLSHIT! She worked fulltime still and had worked an 8 hour the day before her death. Seen the song title in a FB post a short while ago written wrong and here I am...Alone again, naturally
I miss my mom 😢
I miss my dad
I miss my brother..12-23-22
It's going to be ok..... life is weird sometimes
I wish that I missed mine.
I miss my parents. 😢
Thank you very much Gilbert O'Sullivan for accompanying us through our adolescence, today indelible memories thanks to your music and songs.
MUSIC is LIFE! 💜✨
Definitely in the conversation for greatest song ever written ❤
Grandma used to listent this song, She past away one month ago... I really miss her.

My daddy died from a sudden heart attack, leaving my mom widowed at 55. Thirty years later, my mom reunited with my dad. Somehow, back when this song came out, I felt so connected to it. So here I sit, all alone, naturally. 😔💔

I'm 67 and this song was one of my favorits when I was a teen ager.😢 It always Brings to me beautiful memories.
what a coincidence this song is posted now, I've had this in my head for weeks now! such a wonderfully sad song heart 💗
The melancholy itself is like a warm hug, if that makes sense.
Story of my life........heard it as a little boy in the early 70's, and little did I know I would some 5 decades later be living it.....thanks for giving voice and music to a feeling that is so hard to describe to others......doesn't take away the feelings of emptiness, but,...... it helps. I guess misery does love company.
This song affected me as a young boy. at 8 years old I’m nearly 60 now sang it at karaoke and people were affected. A true masterpiece!
Not exactly the place for it, but what advice would you give to the young?
I first heard this song at 13 years old when my grandfather (widowed) played it, I’m 19 now and recently moved away from home for university and listen to this almost daily just to feel closer to home, this song is one that plucks at my heart strings
One of the best songs ever recorded 🎶
I remember when i first heard this song it really hit home since i was left at a specialized hospital when i was 7 i was lucky to see my parents once a week so i spent 6 days out of the week alone and every time i saw them leave i was alone again naturaly i was there for a year
Thank you Gilbert my name is Julien (I'm from France) and your song is the first one that I try to sing and play on guitar because I love it so much then thank you to share with us this very good song 🤍

Ask Not what God can do for you; But what you can do for God
Life on Mars comes to mind straight away ❤ love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Some people are just great at getting their point across. Tell a life story in 3 minutes. Amazingly, this song was not a personal experience. I watched a short with him talking about writing this song. He knew he needed a word after the sentence "alone again..." He tried many words but none sounded right. "Naturally" just came to him one day.
I still remember this in 1973 very quite and clear i love very much this song❤❤❤
Quiet***
Gloomy sunday, mad world and this song are the 3 most saddest song ever created, but at the same time are 3 beauty songs...
Eternal masterpiece.
The first time I heard this song was in "Ice Age 3.: Dawn of the Dinosaurs." (2009).
That nostalgic. 😢
same
For me it was in Megamind
Same to me too..
If you listen closely to the lyrics in ice age they slight changed it to go with the squirrel. 😂

I was 18 in August '72. Trying out for a small time college football team. Would listen to this beautiful song evenings after practice. For whatever reason, this song would inspire me to go all out in practice. I made the 1st team and got a scholarship. Thank u for bringing this song to the forefront and the memories it created.
G.O.S. this song brings me back to my childhood days growing up in Waterford city. The city has changed a lot but this song brings me back to the old days. 🇨🇮❤️🇨🇮

Muchas gracias Gilbert.
Increíble como describes ese momento, un saludo.

I was 14 years old then, the best times.
I haven't ever heard this before. This is amazing! I am not understanding how I have never heard this before. Adding it to all my playlists.
TOUCH THE HEART SO HARD💔💔
Reminds me of my childhood!🥲
Oldies but goodies 💯💯
Thanks for the kdrama named " MOVING " i found this masterpiece. it's healing my soul due to loneliness
This song explains how im... mostly... feeling... this moment...
